One of the greatest anime films of all time. I already got the original Manga release, plus the 2-disc Special Edition. If the picture and sound for this looks and sounds as good as the Blu-ray for Akira, I will gladly pay to have this again on Blu-ray.

Pass. I want The Hangover.
This is the version with all new CG segments replacing the original animation. Examples can be seen here: http://timmaughanbooks.com/2009/01/01/ghost-in-...
Stick to the original GitS.
Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is absolutely horrible. It was done without the director, which may be why the re-done shots often obliterate the director's intention, as well as any meaning those scenes may have had.

If this includes the original version of GitS without the added CGI, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. My GitS2 dvd is getting lonely, but I won't settle for just that CGI version. Blah.
cool cover though

Citation please. As far as I know, this was Oshii's idea in the first place.

What has that got to do with this release?

Was never impressed by either Akira nor GitS
Oshii was not only involved, he directed the reshoots. I'm in two minds about the final result.
First, I think the idea was great to release a version of "Ghost i/t Shell" which better fits with the glorious look of "Innocence". And sometimes the 2.0 succeeds in doing precisely that: the pre-title and title sequence are marvellous eyecandy, if maybe leaning a bit too much towards "ecchi" fan-service (there is much more focus on Kusanagi's bare bodyparts here...).
But the first time Motoko steps into a car you'll notice the drop in framerate (to, like, 10 a second?) and you will wonder why they didn't make that sequence a wee bit more fluid.
This inconsistency keeps popping up throughout the movie, to the point where I wished they had started all over from scratch, just using the designs without reusing any of the previous artwork.
I've heard people say the upgrade is only for a few choice minutes in the movie. This is incorrect: every single scene has been touched. The aspect ratio of the whole film has been changed for starters, and each scene is yellow-orange tinted instead of the original's green-blue palette. Small details have been erased or replaced (like mobile phones the size of bricks), dialogue has been replaced as well to better fit today's figures of speech, and synched accordingly. The whole movie has been re-edited too, adding seconds here, clipping seconds there.
But in the end it's still "Ghost i/t Shell". It's brilliant. Last January I bought the Japanese regionfree Special Edition BluRay, which indeed had the original (1.0 if you so wish...) version with English subs and a CD of the remastered soundtrack. The original was equally breathtaking in HD, so here's hoping for all of you that the rumors about 1.0 being included in this set are true...

What has that got to do with this release?
He is simply stating that he needs to go away and never come back.....
A definate buy for me - my favorite manga. Heres hoping for a 3rd series.....

I'll definitely get this. I loved the films and I loved the series even more. I'm just a little skeptical about the inconsistency of the picture. I'm confused with their decision to recreate only a handful of scenes. Why even bother if you can't even go all the way? It seems more like a GitS 1.5 than a 2.0. Regardless, i'll be picking this up purely because the series is one of my favorite anime.
Highres artwork added...
I will only buy it if it includes the original version as well. One of the best anime films made IMO. Didn't care that much for the sequel though...

The main reason why Innocence wasn't as good was the absence of the Major (except for a small cameo). Batou is cool and badass, but let's be real here, Major Kusanagi is the heart and soul (and fanservice sex appeal) of the whole franchise.....

I like both "Innocence" and "Ghost it Shell", but having said that I have to agree that the sequel only bowled me over visually while the original hit me on ALL fronts.
This just in: the UK Bluray will indeed contain the original version (1.0 so to speak) as an extra on the disc, but allegedly the transfer is a 1080i upscale of their old DVD, not a true BD like the one that was included in the 4-disc Japanese Limited Edition, released in January...

Oh. Where the hell did I read that Oshii wasn't involved? Anyway, whatever. I still largely prefer the original, but I can see where you're coming from.
