I don't read much DC so I don't know the character that well, but the tone felt too light for me. I sort of get the human thought process creating predictable weapons thing, because we'd probably all do that, but even so. They underused the other members of the Corps as well, and it was obvious what was gonna happen with Sinestro even if you didn't read the comics. Not the best I've seen. i sort of put it on the level of the FF movies.
I prefer the DC Universe Animated versions of this beloved character! Somehow I believe that Ryan Reynolds was a poor choice to be the lead in this movie!

Yeah especially the terrible second one. GL seems to be another case of Hollywood not knowing how to sell a pretty goofy concept in a serious way and just hoping the goofiness of the movie adaptation will distract from the guy with a crazy ring. It doesn't work.

I'm not sure Martin Campbell is the reason this failed
I hated, hated, HATED this. Aside from the Superman/Batman franchises and the old Flash TV series, I don't think there has ever been a great DC product on screen. They just don't seem to grasp the celluloid medium the way Marvel do. I'd put this slightly above Steel and that Justice League monstrosity from the 90's, but only just. It just felt so... empty. Literally nothing there for me to enjoy.
The weird thing with this is it seemed to be going well for quite a while. Then the big green bubble appeared around Hal and he got called to the crashed ship and everything just sort of fell apart from there.
Haven't seen the film, only bits and pieces prior to its release, but if it had 'anything' then it was probably Martin Campbell that brought it.
I don't know the DC world and had never heard of the Green Lantern before this film, bit it seems to me that unless a director 'gets it' (the story and character) then ihe end product is always going to be mediocre. The problem is, is that execs casts about looking for the next big comic franchise, pick one and don't really ask whether it will translate to the screen or ask whether people will find the main character/conceit even interesting. Then money get thrown at it, concept drawings are done, people are cast and before long, it's filming and there's no stopping it. The project, good or bad at this point, has to be completed one way or the other.
For a time it looked to me, that GL was going to be something that could be really good. As it turned out, it was 'other'.

Is Reynolds the kiss of death for superhero movies? He was in the rigor-mortis racked Blade Trinity, Wolverine (which pretty much killed the Origins arm of the X-Men franchise), and now this... I predict a funeral dirge for Deadpool as well.
In my world, the only redeeming quality of this film being released is the fact that after it's 3 month window and it's half-arsed crawl onto the DVD Active page, my rant reminded me that I really need to watch that Flash DVD boxset again. Mr. Lantern, you DO serve a purpose after all. Well done you.

I liked it but I went in expecting nothing. But hey I liked Wolverine and Trinity is my favorite of the Blade movies.
