I know what you are all thinking. Why in heck would they separate Grindhouse. A 2-disc edition releasing September 18th which is Death Proof and October 16th which is Planet Terror. The reason is to make more money. Think of it this way. If 2 whole films are playing in 1 why would you release them together on just two separate discs. That would be a stupid idea because that's like putting The mist and 1408 together. I bet you next year in April 2008 they'll make a box set of Grindhouse 2007 and sell it around for $39.99.
Can someone pleeeeaaaasse give me some hope!
I'm an Aussie, and rumour is that the "Death Proof" is the only DVD being released.
This fully sucks because we didn't even get the theatrical release!
I'm cut as a banana-less monkey.

i think that it is vry stupid that they come out sepratly, and i think planet terror has better art work than death proof.
too bad there isn't a 4-disc box set of both films...
I'm looking forward to Tarantino making regular movies again. Something he hasn't done since Jackie Brown.

Will it be worth it? Do we know exactly what's been cut from the Japanese Volume 1 DVD release as part of the whole bloody affair? Do we know if they will just slap the Japanese version of Volume 1 together with volume 2? Or will we see a completely re-edited movie making them feel like one film?
btw does anyone know if the R1 "Grindhouse" DVDs will have DTS?
i hear its a seamless re-editing of both volumes. i also hear that it restores all the missing shots that were included in the japanese cut. i have the japanese cut, and the only differences that i can remember are that the HOBL scene is in color with a couple of extra shots, and that sophie gets her other arm cut off while in the trunk (which was actually more shocking than the rest of the "88" guys who got their appendages sliced off).

According to the original screenplays as written by Rodriguez and Tarantino, the missing reel was always a part of "Planet Terror" and adds quite a bit of humor to the proceedings - you know, couple's making out, and then, all of a sudden, BIG FLAMING RESTAURANT!
But with "Death Proof", there really was never any missing reel written in. You're supposed to see the lapdance and everything that comes after. It was just supposed to be a straightforward telling of a story, but yeah - the missing reel in Tarantino's feels a little forced. Of course, understanding Tarantino's nod to the missing reel helps, but all the same - I think he should have kept it in. Definitely good to keep the running time down by leaving things to your imagination, though...

I'm glad they're being released seperately as proper movies, instead of stitched together as some poncey attempt at re-creating a Z-Movie double bill. The whole idea of scenes missing on purpose might have been hilarious to the two directors,(both in need of a good slap), but made me cringe. Maybe the fact these bombed in the States might bring them back down to earth with a thud!

Not really. He was shown in the second trailer (I'll sell my soul to get a T-shirt of him as Mutated Muldoon :D )
Even though I won't purchase both films on DVD (I WANT THE WHOLE GRINDHOUSE EXPERIENCE WITH THE TRAILERS, DAMNIT!!!), I hope they do well on DVD. "Grindhouse" is one of the best films this year.

I won`t be getting these. I like the covers but I wanna see the whole grindhouse project as it was supposed to be released. Now that they haven`t done that in cinema over here and won`t be doing it on dvd it`s a pass for me untill they release a decent version that includes the faux trailers
cool covers, i love "death proof", hate how bruce willis is on the cover, how much of a joke is that lol
I LOVE these movies...like DEATH PROOF much more than PLANET TERROR though, both are good movies. A shame that both are now separated. Oh well, still buying them.
I thought Bruce Willis's part was supposed to be a big secret/cool uncredited cameo and now he's on the cover?
The steel box art is awesome.

Why does planet terror have to have a stupid quote on the cover and death proof doesnt? How about some uniformity. Im buying the steelbooks anyways... just a matter of time before they start putting quotes on those as well.
I don't mind the Planet Terror artwork. Maybe this thought has already been addressed and I missed it, but how are these films going to be shown on tv? Will they be seperated, or will they be presented the way they were in the theater?
I actually like the final Planet Terror art better than the one they presented at Comic-Con.
Now, if the two films have DTS, I'll be set.

Good cover for Planet Terror! I might get the steelbook edition that Best Buy is supposed to have, that cover art is better, kind of.
The Planet Terror art is lacking.
The only way I'll purchase it is if I manage to snag a copy of the Best Buy Steel book!

Yeah, after getting Death Proof art perfect, they sure f**ked up the Planet Terror cover.
The artwork for Death Proof is wonderful, just excellent...now the other one, a litlte bit more commercial...
I hated Deathproof; half an hour of nothing but pointless girls talking, then a 2 minute death scene, then another half an hour of different girls talking, then a pretty cool 10 minute chase scene, then its over. Plant Terror was effing awesome though, I'm definately going to pick that up.
I don't know if this has been posted yet, but, either way, here it goes. Seems to me that the "Grindhouse Presents:" part at the top, that almost makes it seem like more movies of this style are going to be released under the Grindhouse name.
Artwork now added for Planet Terror
Keep in mind: Death Proof was recut and extended for the Canne's Film Festival, so it no longer fit in with the Grindhouse runtime anyways.

Uh...silly. You're so wrong.
1) Harvey and Bob Weinstein left Miramax to form their own company, since their relationship with Disney went sour over certain films they wanted to release (the NC-17 version of "Kill Bill", Kevin Smith's "Dogma", Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 451"
.
2) "Clerks 2" cost $5 mil to make. It made $26 million.
Now, go away, lthink and maybe you'll be taken seriously. :D

I never considered the (mostly tedious, empty and boringly pretentious) "Vanishing Point" a Grindhouse flick.
It's too polished, slow and tame. Far more a Drive-in flick to me.
It's too polished, slow and tame. Far more a Drive-in flick to me.
This is a huge kick in the nuts.
I could care less about the extended versions of both these flicks; they should have released GRINDHOUSE first. In my opinion, spliting up the films on the initial release will bring in less profit for the Wienstiens. Not many average movie goers went to see Grindhouse in the theatres, and that was 2 films for the price of one. Do they actually think the average movie- going public is going to fork over 27 bucks for "half" a film that they never bothered to see at the cinema to begin with? No they won't, and that's a bad marketing move. If they released GRINDHOUSE first, fans would be all on that as would others remembering it from TV/POSTER/internet add. If the extended DEATH PROOF and Planet TERROR were released later as a double dip, the fans would inevitably be on that again( a la SIN CITY). But that route was not taking, and by releasing DEATH PROOF and PLANET TERROR initially separated, many fans will be angered and will hold off for the double dip, and others less fimiliar with the material won't know what the hell a DEATH PROOF or a PLANET TERROR is. Stupid move indeed.
That said, I'll be one of the suckers ponying up the $ for the separate releases. I just love the "two" films to much to hold off for a release that nobody has any idea on when it will arrive!
Also, my money's on an around Christmas release of the theatrical cut(just like SIN CITY).

No, I know for a FACT that GRINDHOUSE (the theatrical cut) was supposed to be the first release on DVD (I have a contact at Weinstein Company). When the film tanked at the boxoffce, the DVD release plan changed. Now, the separate extended releases would come out first. The separate releases were always planned, but they were originally planned to come AFTER the GH release. You can believe whatever Tarantino was blathering about at the time as what was to be released first, but the actual company and business of The Weinstein Company was planning a GRINDHOUSE DVD as the initial release. It was exactly because the film bombed that we are seeing this current release plan.

It seems like most people are missing the point that the best news here about the extras on these initial releases is that the fake trailers ARE NOT included. Why? Because that pretty much proves that Weinstein is holding the trailers back for the eventual proper release of "Grindhouse" on DVD. If the trailers were on these initial split releases, it would take away a LOT of the sales potential for the eventual release of "GRINDHOUSE". There would be no reason for Weinstein to not include the trailers now unless they were holding them back for a future release. The fake trailers were more well-received than either of the two films so they will definitely show up in the eventual proper GRINDHOUSE dvd release. Hopefully sooner than later.

I actually liked Once Upon a Time in Mexico, though mostly I just liked Johnny Depp in it. I thought his performance was hilarious and made the whole film, and it gets better every time I watch it.
That said, I like Planet Terror a lot more that Death Proof, it was just more fun and made much better use of it's missing reel. It actually added to the story, whereas the missing reel in Death Proof just made a bunch of guys pissed off that they couldn't see the lap dance. I'll buy Planet Terror and wait for a double feature release to get Death Proof...I liked the end but the whole first half was incredibly boring. Did love the soundtrack though.

It was so much fun to watch these two films in the theater together with the fake trailers...I'd much rather have that on DVD.
In defense...

Hardly the same.
Neither of those films was specifically made TO BE a double bill together. Whereas this is the only reason either of these two films exist and were made.
They are not just random films that just happened to be released together by accident.
They were part of a whole package that was specifically designed to do something.
There is no comparison.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico was really bad but Desperado, El Mariachi, Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn are fun.
I used to really like Robert Rodriguez films before he did spy kids and while I thought Sin City was OK. I think doing a bunch of kids films has really taken away his edge. Looking back recently on From dusk till Dawn although it's directed by Rodriguez it really feels more like Tarantino movie. To me Tarantino's writing and on set advice definitely comes through with more of a Tarantino flavour.
Edit: I have to agree that once Upon a Time in Mexico was absolutely awful. In fact I enjoyed the DVD extras more than the movie in particular the 10 minute cooking segment.
Anyway if the DVD release was made in the spirit of grindhouse then surely the DVDs would be really cheap bare bone DVD releases, with c**ppy sound and picture?
Quote: Neither director is a sign of sure quality, especially Tarantino who seems to be putting his name on more and more rubbish.
Tarantino may be placing his name on more and more rubbish as a producer but so far his name as a director is proven quality. Personally if I see Tarantino's name associated with a film if it isn't as a director or writer I don't think of it as his film and it reduces my interest in the project.

Yeah - as an avid Edgar/Simon/Nick DVD collector, this really cheeses me off that "Don't" isn't included. Personally, I thought that the concept and execution of Edgar's trailer was astounding; it brought back fond memories of watching these kinds of trailers at my film geek friend's house in high school. We tried to make a trailer along those lines in our high school film club, but it wound up sucking, so we chucked it.

Two, on the Region 1 disc, Edgar stuck a shot of me asking a question of Nick in there on the "Fuzzball Rally" extra. How fun - you brothers and I are on the same DVD! Now I've asked all my friends and family to buy a copy to up the sales...

they're probably not going add the fake trailers plus i love quentin but death proof was not grindhouse movie at all.
First off, let me say I am in favor or getting these in one release. But, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't this getting up into the length where it would have to be over two discs anyway? It was over three hours, I'm sure, so if getting the whole experience on one disc means it's going to look like ass on my HDTV, I think I'll pass. That said, I like that these are each 2-disc sets, but they should have had Machete (and Hobo With A Shotgun??) on at the beginning of the Planet Terror disc and the other three on the Death Proof disc (I think that's how they went, wasn't it?) I'll buy them used and wait for the real set to come out.

They have to have something to get us to buy it again and Robert Rodriguez already said that he is making Machete into a feature and will shoot it before he starts Sin City 2, and apparently an hour of footage has already been shot for Machete to begin with.
"Machete" (along with possibly a "Babysitter Twins" film) was confirmed at Comic-Con as having been officially greenlit recently, so it'll happen. As for "Sin City II", it's on the backburner until Frank Miller is finished with his film upcoming "The Spirit" and Rodriguez does both "Barbarella" and "Machete". I wouldn't expect "Sin City II" to arrive until the summer or fall of 2009. Rumor has it though, that when the time comes Rodriguez plans on shooting both "Sin City II" and "Sin City III" back to back.

As much as I'd like to have the theatrical version of Grindhouse (which I'm sure is going to be released about this time next year, wait and see), I think I'm going to be a sheep and buy the seperate releases anyway. Hopefully, the extended version of that boring-as-hell Death Proof will include more scenes with Kurt Russell, since he was the only decent part of it.
I concur. I wish both films were released together or at least on the same day.

well i must say i am very dissapointed in the release of two seperate discs, i knew it would happen but my question is when do you think they would annouce a boxset of both with trailers?? teo damm years ago they did this with sin city it came out i bought it to find out a couple days later that a extended cut would come out in dec. i would have waited, they should tell us when the box set will be out so we the consumer can decide. i have no problem buying the seperate releases if it is coming out in years but i want to make my own decision i never double dip if i buy them now i want buy the box set which would be bad for me but my respect in weinsteins and their c**ppy company i would think twice to ever see a movie from their company again ever
I enjoyed both films...both a zombie fan and a fan of the old grindhouse classics 'Vanishing Point' & 'Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry'...but, without the faux trailers (esp. 'Don't!' & 'Thanksgiving'
I, sadly, will have to pass on principal.
what's this "experience" everyone keeps going on about? it was just two intentionally "b" movies shown back to back. with fake trailers.
This money-grab really undermines the whole spirit of Grindhouse. This was an experience more than a movie, and to remove the double-feature quality and especially to leave out those awesome trailers... it's just watching two sorta mediocre movies. Well, I really liked Planet Terror and managed to find Death Proof entertaining, but I walked out of the theater really jazzed because I'd just experiences a bygone era.
This is a bummer, even with the two-disc treatments, and it'll be the trailers I miss most (anyone else notice that the trailers upheld the skin-tradition better than either of the films?).
If anything good can come of this, I hope it'll be a message to QT. I'm guessing Planet Terror will sell noticably better than Death Proof, and I hope that reminds him that dialogue for the sake of dialogue needs to be really good/interesting, even by his standards, if he's going to completely abandon story/narrative for forty minutes at a time.

This was a real disappointment to learn that they would be split up. I didn't get to see the films because they came and went so fast. Now we will never know how they were really supposed to be seen. That is a damn shame.

The problem is that 90% of those of you that complain about stuff like this will still buy both movies. That's why studios and producers get away with this. It's the same thing when a great movie comes out with a DVD of just the movie and then 4 months later comes out with the 2 disc special edition. They know tons of people who can't just get it from Blockbuster and wait for the special edition will buy both. We can end this if all of you that are guilty of this will stop doing that and just wait for the edition of the DVD you really want, the special edition. Otherwise, the studios are just going to keep doing this. I guarantee you it will be released in it's original Grindhouse form with the other trailers that were on during the intermission in about 6 months, maybe a little more. I think you guys can wait, and spread the word to all of your friends to do the same. Then maybe we can have an effect on how studios rape us financially.
I am so upset that the fake trailers won't be included. What a load of S**T. Just because they did not make enough money at the box office they have to take it out on us. Us the people that really enjoyed these movies in the original presentation same as the movies. So much B.S. Thanks Weistein I could see why Disney fired you.

I was a kid when they stopped double bills in the UK and have only vague memories, and was in the wrong country (and too young any way) to experience an exploitaion/grindhouse night out.
As such this was a fun idea.
Take away the idea though and it's simply not that big a deal anymore because it's just two (overblown, given the stupidly big budgets) pretend exploitation flicks that i can take or leave with little thought.
there are enough real grindhouse films out there to watch come to that. Many on the kind of fun double bill set-up (with trailers, like some of the SWV DVD's) that these have given up on.
Wouldn't it have been cool to release these video versions in giant VHS boxes, with Wizard Video titles and new trailers cropped to 1.33:1?

Leave it to the Weinstein company to f*ck up this release! I plan on getting them both because I loved both of them, but I'm very disappointed that they're not releasing them the way they should be, including the fake trailers!
I can't believe this c**p. Going to see Grindhouse was probably the best time I ever had in a movie theater and now they aren't releasing it all in one set. Splitting up these movies is just a means of making money and I Don't like it. What made Grindhouse so special was the fact that it was two movies back to back. And whats going to happen to all the awesome trailers and the intermissions they had? They just going to throw them out the window? Personally I would rather pay $40 for a single Grindhouse movie rather than have it split up. I hope Dimension realizes its mistake and releases a all in one DVD.
This is bulls*i*!
I can't believe they split these films in two!
It's not "Grindhouse", it's hosehouse!
This, I felt, was one of the best film going experiences of '07 & it just can't translate to the home video market?
I'll wait for the inevitable "Special Financial Consumer Enhanced Gang-Bang 7 Disc Edition". At least, then I know I'll truly be financially facked.

I bet they will release the trailers separately, after all most people right now are complaining about the trailers being excluded, therefore the studio will take advantage of that.

I was really disappointed a few months back when I heard the movie would be split up but I got over it. I assumed at least if we bought the two together we could still get the Grindhouse experience. The exclusion of the trailers is ridiculous though. Those were the highlight of the movie. Planet Terror was cheesy fun but not worth buying on its own, while Death Proof was a bore with the exception of about 20 minutes. On their own neither are worth buying without the trailers. I'm one of those people who could care less about about special features. I just want the movie but I'll pass on this until the day Grindhouse is actually released, and I'm never one to pass on a movie that I really liked.
Hey I want to know more about this Best Buy exclusive bonus disc and packaging! Anybody have any concrete info?
NOOOOOOOO! Eff you Weinsteins. No trailers, no deal! Unless a store puts the trailers on a bonus disc, no dice sirs!
These were both great films and worked wonderfully back-to-back. I'm am very happy to see that they are getting the 2-Disc Special Edition treatment, even though they failed, because they deserve it. The artwork is great, the only question is why not release them the same day?...and in a special package?

Yes, I've seen the steelbooks as well. I like the Planet Terror artwork on the regular edition more though. Why in the hell would they not include those trailers? I don't know how many times I laughed at that "Don't" trailer, that was hilarious. What's going to be included on this BB exclusive disc? Hmmm.......
Am I the only one who thought both movies (and the trailers) sucked?
The exclusion of the fake trailers is really upsetting. I guess I wouldn't mind buying the seperate DVDs because they do seem to have pretty cool extras (Rodriguez's are better, but no surprise there). I do hope they release the complete Grinhouse experience as I saw it in the theaters because I think I enjoyed it more then the movies themselves, I wouldn't be terribly upset about having to buy that too if they included some new features on there as well..

Fine I think. It would just make the prints look like the kind of real vintage films that pop up on 'Something Weird Video'.

From what a contact at Comic-Con told me, only Planet Terror will come with Machete.

Weinsteins botched the theatrical release and now they're botching the dvd release. As evidenced by most of the above posts (count me in too), these movies should be offered not only as stand alone dvds (for those who want to pick and choose) but also as a collector's set complete with all the fake trailers. I want to believe there's a better set coming out in 2008 but if that were the case, why would they put out 2-disc special editions of both films now? Help me out here, I'm trying to recall if a 2-disc special edition has ever been double dipped like that.
On a side note, I'm a little concerned that neither film will play as well at home as they did in the theatre. All the scratches and missing reels and the intermission and all that gimmicky stuff was great in the theatre environment. How's it going to play, separated, and in all of it's digital glory on a nice home system?

I predict that this will be double dipped in April of 2008 as the theatrical version on Disc 1 with the faux trailers and no other special features, and a 2nd disc with the Machete film on it with special features for that film, and possibly will include Moviecash to see Sin City 2 which is slated for release in April 08. They have to have something to get us to buy it again and Robert Rodriguez already said that he is making Machete into a feature and will shoot it before he starts Sin City 2, and apparently an hour of footage has already been shot for Machete to begin with.
I'm pathetic and I'll probably still break down and buy these separate releases but, I gotta say, it's a big letdown reading that the fake trailers won't be included in this release. The trailers were a big reason why I enjoyed seeing this so much in the theater. Especially the one with Danny Trejo playing the day-laborer vigilante and the one directed by Eli Roth....
OK, ill take it. I was wondering what they were going to do with "Grindhouse" and it makes sense. im glad that each film is extended and has a special edition. i cant wait to pick them up.
This release is a ripoff to Quentin Tarantino fans.
Also, rumor has it that Best Buy will have these with an exclusive 3rd disc and have steelbook packaging. If that is the case, then it becomes a must buy for me.[/quote]
These exclusives may make me buy, as i am a sucker for the steelbooks, even though the lack of faux trailers in disturbing if not expected. double dip=$$$

I wouldn't be, either. Being the geek that I am, though, I'm probably going to get all editions of this thing...
BTW, guys, the Region 1 DVD of "Hot Fuzz" came out yesterday. AWESOME STUFF.

Well at least now I can see it! There is still no word on any sort of release for either film, or together as they should be, here in Australia! So very very disappointing! I was so looking forward to having the whole grindhouse experience in a cinema but I guess 2 separate DVDs will suffice!
no trailers on either film? bulls**t, i say! i'll wait for the inevitable 5 disc ultimate unrated edition.
I'm not really that bothered about the films (I don't see this as the next proper Tarantino movie) I was more interested in the whole concept of releasing a double bill of pseudo-70's grindhouse flicks with the old style trailers in the middle for those ever welome 'upcoming features'.

I'll just wait for the boxset with both movies - the way it should be released.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico was really bad but Desperado, El Mariachi, Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn are fun.
Neither director is a sign of sure quality, especially Tarantino who seems to be putting his name on more and more rubbish.
I'll wait for the reviews on the DVDs, just incase the Extended Edition turns out to be an overlong snorefest like Kill Bill.
Yeah he has placed his name on a real RUBBISH film called Hostel and Hostel Part II. Other than that Tarantino is a fantastic director, he never aims to failure.

That looks pretty fantastic. I understand why they broke it up into 2 movies...I don't mind. I have no problem watching them back to back if I want to. Not really a big deal.
YES! i dont have to sit through Robert Rodriguez in Planet Terror. I have never liked any Robert Rodriguez film, from Spy Kids to Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
I'll wait till the boxset comes out the way it was shown theatrically which I really liked. Neither one was good enough to buy on its own. The whole point that made Grindhouse such a fun experience was the two films back to back with the fake trailers. This stinks.
Death Proof was just plain boring, I thought. Every minute without Stuntman Mike was a wasted one. They just wouldn't shut up about "Vanishing Point" and it was so frustrating to hear a bunch of tomboys dish about how cool "Vanishing Point" was and Ohmigosh, you haven't seen "Vanishing Point?" The stunts at the end were fine but I really just was bored throughout, I'd say.
Planet Terror was ok, I thought. Nothing new or special but it got the job done better than a lot of the Rodriguez films I've seen.

It was a cool thing they did presenting a double bill ala GRINDHOUSE...but business is business. How many different versions can we get away with? Before we put out the version everyone wants. I think the movies loose something as stand alones.

you know if we were playing cards right now, this is where I would call Bull S*it ,I REALLY wanted the dvd presented in its theather format!!!
Comparing the Kill Bill release to the Grindhouse release it not exactly fair.
Under miramax they could not possibly release a uncut version of Kill Bill as miramax/Dimension never release NC17/unrated dvds.
Now that the Weinsteins have formed a new company they are allowed to release an uncut Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair.
They showed off the box last week at Comic Con:

At Comic Con, Edgar Wright (who directed the fake trailer 'Dont!" confirmed that the fake trailers will not be included in these two separate Grindhouse releases:

Remember how everyone said in 2004 they are not going to buy the Kill Bill bare bones (no special features) DVDs since Tarantino would release volumes 1 and 2 as one special edition loaded with special features
It is 2007 and that idea has not come into fruition.
If they are releasing Planet Terror and Death Proof as two separate 2 disc special editions that probably means these are going to be the definitive dvds for a while
if they were planning to release both movies in one set I doubt they would release them first as two separate 2 disc special editions and they would have made them bare bones with no special features.
Kill Bill is coming out in November (13th I believe here in the States).
This was in and out of the theater so fast, I never got a chance to see it. On the one hand, I would love to see these extended cuts, I am all over it. But on the other hand, I really would like to see it how it was...fake trailers and all. I'll probably pick these up and then get the original cut when it becomes available.

Well I don't know what special features it will have, but the new version of Kill Bill, comes out on December 25, 2007. Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. You can check it out on Amazon here.

I am so pissed that they're releasing these seperately, but that is one kickass cover art. And at least they're 2-disc special editions.

I just wish that QT would get on with releasing the new version of Kill bill that he has mentioned before...
One question. The article makes no mention of those fake movie trailers that were shown in between the 2 parts. Will they be included on either or both of these sets?
Yes they are releasing them as two separate films without the fake trailers. The combined Grindhouse release with the fake trailers comes out at a later date courtesy of the generous and thoughtful Weinstein Company.

Yes they are 2 seperate films but they were released as a double feature. And yes, Dimension is doing this to make as much money as they can.
If it weren't for the fact that they are both 2 disc sets, I'd be more upset then what I am. I'll be picking both of them up even though I was a bigger fan of Planet Terror.
