Quote: The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the Goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever...Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities...A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Enough of this UltraViolet c**p. Give me a real digital copy already! And while your at it, the bluray slipcover is god awful. Martin Freeman looks like his holding back a bad fart.
I remember many people saying the same about the LOTR movies to be too long and then later praise them all and even be eager to see the Extended cuts. So it is just history repeating itself.
If only del Toro had stayed to direct this....
My God, this movie went on forever...
Gimme the extended edition. Not as good as FOTR, but not a horrible film by any means. Some of the acton scenes I felt were too long though. Like PJ was trying to burn through film. Get back to the plot man.
Can't wait for Barrels Out Of Bond and SMAUG!!!

The movie was a little long and I still wondering if this stretching it into three movies is a good idea (less alone two movies). I probably buy it and also get the extended cut on blu-ray
Yet again, Gandalf fails to call on his giant eagle buddies to safely and conveniently transport them to their destination.
Well, technically, his failure to do so in the first Hobbit movie isn't "yet again." But Bilbo fails to tell his nephew to remind Gandalf about the Giant Eagle buddies.

I didnt enjoy this at all, but I also wasn't expecting much from it. I was bored stiff. I admit i am not a huge LOTR fan but those films were fun, intense in scenes and all about the journey. This was just plodding and more of the same.
I noticed Blu-ray.com has back covers for the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D combo pack. The audio listed on both is DTS-HD MA 7.1 (along with French and Spanish DD5.1 audio)... is there a Dolby Digital EX 5.1 track on the DVD?
I enjoyed the movie, but I agree-- far too long. Peter Jackson really needs to get aggressive in the editing room -- two of the songs should've hit the cutting room floor. At least 20-30 minutes could've been shaved off the movie without impacting the overall story flow.
But what's worse is that I read that Peter Jackson will add another 15-20 minutes on the Extended Cut. [insert huge sigh here]

I agree with Gabe. The theatrical cut, presuming it is not the director's intended cut, already felt bloated; Jackson did not omit anything from what I can recall so far. Instead, he's included events etc., that did not occur in the novel. Therefore, how can an extended cut exist and what would be added-in to extend this film?
Did anyone actually like this movie? Seriously, the biggest disappointment of 2012... what a letdown.
If only there was a reason to further extend this story, which should have been completed in a single movie.
i'm doing exactly what i did for LOTR, wait for the extended trilogy collection. so that means i should own this somewhere in 2015

I agree on waiting for the extended.. i am looking forward to it. i didnt feel the theatrical was long enough. I was surprised when i read reviews that thought it was. but to each their own.
although certainly wont buy this quick release version anyway

True, but I would at least like to experience the thing as intended by the creative forces behind the film, rather than the end result as dictated by the bean-counters at the studio.

Extended? Wasn't the entire film already extended far beyond necessity?
I certainly won't be buying the theatrical cut on Blu. I'll wait for the extended version that will be out in time for the release of The Desolation of Smaug.

Like many, I'm waiting for the boxed set. Not paying full price for a third of a story. Didn't mind so much with Lord of the Rings as there you had more or less the full story as intended in one film. £25-£30 max for the lot thanks.
With extensive reshoots by Jack Black and Mos Def.
Now that I got the profession part out of the way I can express my hope that the rumored extended cut is actually a shorter, 90 minute version.
