To me, Inland Empire is the story of the exploitation of women, the repetition of the meat grinder they are put through and how that vicious cycle wreaks havoc on Laura Dern. Her character is victim and eventually assailant and back. That's just me though.

Just because you have conclusions that contradict another's doesnt mean that either of you are right (or wrong).
Inland Empire doesnt give answers, its gives you a series of images (or scenes) and leaves you to think. You may not like the film, but im pretty sure you thought about it afterwards. It doesnt matter weather you are right or wrong, or if you made any sense of it. In fact, you DID make sense of it.
As lynch said, its all about intuition. You use your intuition to understand the film. Its intuition and instinct that helps us survive in the real world, whereas at the movies, we are spoonfed all the answers (a standard set by hollywood). Lynch decided that he DIDNT want to follow hollywood standards, which he is known for doing in most of his previous films.
If you, or anyone else, has a different theory, or understanding, as to what the f**k was really going on in the film (or in any of lynch's other films), go ahead and explain. But coming on here, saying that you can contradict OUR own understandings really makes you look like an arrogant prick.
If you were displeased with the film because you were expecting something else, its no one's fault but your own. When you walk into a Lynch film, expect the unexpected, even if you didnt expect a peice s**t.
This is probably as close as he'll ever get to eraserhead (which, as he has stated, is his most personal film).
and i agree, this was a terrific film.

so which disc is better now? the R1 or R2UK? it seems each has different unique extras..
Mulholland Dr. was an actual movie. Lost Highway should just be considered fantasy, instead of realistic drama. But I didn't like Lost Highway that much either.
I did get Mulholland Dr., but it took multiple viewings to do so, and a few discussions with friends.
Yeah, it's called Experimental Film. You see people doing it all the time (most, if not all usually don't go theatrical though.) IE is an experimental film. It is a personal film, like other experimental films, and it can have many interpretations, a rorschach test film if you will. That's what this movie was.
Sigh, no, I haven't missed the news recently, I know what you meant. I meant, why bring it up here? Although in hindsight, I guess there's no problem, just you can say that about any religion out there.
Like I said before, or implied, I'm not trying to change your opinion. You don't like it, that's fine.

Nope, we can add "lost Highway" and "Mul Dr" to the list as well.
Anyone can make a film that makes no sense at the end (and if you say you 'got' those films I could show you views that are contradict you by people who also say they got it).
Give me some money and a camera and I'll make a film that makes no sense at the end (hell, I'll even change lead actotrs and characters half way through just to be extra clever and revered) and then when everyone goes "Er, what did all that mean Dave" I'll use the stock Lynch reply he always gives;
"It means....what...you...want it.....to mean".
Genius!
Since when did a movie (no matter how bizarre, original, extreme, weird or out there that movie may be) making sense at the end become a sin? And since when did taking the easy, laughable, full of yourself way of simply refusing to have your movie actually make any sense become so damn holy!?
Oh right...since Lynch started to love it so much.
And the Islam thing (perhaps you've missed the news recently) is actually a damn fine comparison of blind faith that will not tolerate criticism.
And to say "Hey, you know what I was enjoying "Mul Dr" and "Losy highway" until they needlessly vanished up their own arses and never came back again - "Inland Empire" started up its own arse - means, from what i have seen, you get nearly as much abuse and scorn as certain poor Danish cartoonists!

I agree that this is not his best effort, however, having not yet seen two of his movies, I cannot really judge best and worst yet. However, I don't quite see how you can say this was terrible because it was weird for weirdness' sake, when "Fire Walk With Me" was exactly that, in addition to being completely redundant.

You get that Islamic type hate to anything bad said about Muhammed if you dare to blaspheme against 'The Lynch'.
Well i for one don't have any time for any fanatical cults be it Islam or Lyncham.
By saying all that, you're just as bad as the "Lynchamics" who would blast you for blasting the movie. And really man, the Islam thing? What was that about?
Yes, I like Lynch, a lot. Yes, I liked the movie, a lot. You didn't like the movie, that's fine. I did. Life goes on. You didn't offend "a Lynchamic" nor did you hit a nerve.

Yes, he did actually!
He held the gun of 'once being a damn fine film maker of damn fine films' to my head to get me to see the masturbatory dross he's been spurting out recently.
I guess I'm stupid enough to think the Lynch who made "Wild at Heart", "Blue Velvet", "Twin Peaks", "Fire walk with Me" and "The Elephant Man" still exists in there somewhere.
Call me a romantic!
All I get though is a pretentious old man playing with himself and being weird for weirdness sake while people who should know better scream out "VISIONARY" with as much orgasmic delight as Lynch must burst out with when he ejaculates his latest pretentious creation of self-indulgence into the public arena.

He seems to have given up (no matter how weird, bizarre, unlikely and surreal the content) on making actual movies anymore.
He might as well just make art installations for poncy critics in multi-media galleries and leave cinema alone.
If Lynch wants to masturbate let him do it somewhere else other than in my face, on my money.

Honestly, my problem with this film was that it was too long and too repetitive. I understand that that's what he was going for but an additional 75 minutes?! It seems like it really was Lynch's vanity project, a long drawn-out slog that took him years to make and is impressive but VERY self-indulgent. Arguably, a lot of his films are but this one throws out so much at you all at once that I found it perhaps a bit more tediously eccentric than his other films. I like it quite a bit but am really wondering what the extra 75 minutes will add.
Well, considering the film was shot on DV, the cover suits the hazy feel the film had. Anyways, some great news for the R1 release!
The Digital Bits said: In official news this morning, Rhino Entertainment has announced the DVD release of David Lynch's Inland Empire on 8/14 (SRP $29.95). The 2-disc set, overseen by Lynch himself, will include a whopping 75 minutes worth of additional scenes (entitled More Things That Happened), a "making of" featurette (Lynch 2: Behind the Scenes of Inland Empire), interviews with Lynch and the film's star Laura Dern (Stories), a photo gallery, 3 theatrical trailers, plus footage of Lynch at home cooking quinoa (appropriately titled David Lynch Cooks Quinoa).
Woo!

Are you serious? I like the R1 cover way better. Best of all: no cheap quotes on it. God, I hate those
I like the design of the R2 DVD. I dont like quotes either, but the R1 artwork looks like it was done in microsoft paint (but i guess that's whats popular here in the US, considering half the dvd covers that get released here look like they were designed by untalented graphic design students). I wouldnt be surprised if the image of laura dern came pixelated as shown. Looks like the douche that designed it used the "stretch to size" option. come on!

Looks like some of those interviews may be UK exclusives... hopefully we get everything that'll be on the US release otherwise I'll have to buy both (I don't normally double dip but I'll make an exception for this movie)!

90 MINUTES OF DELETED SCENES.
BEHIND THE SCENES.
DAVID LYNCH COOKS QUINOA.
Have also listed the release date being the 24th of July....

I doubt Lynch would allow it's release, Fire Walk with Me still has no deleted footage released, or Mulholland Drive for that matter.
For a Lynch films those extras aren't too bad. I hope they're a decent length though.

Amazing artwork that really misleads the consumer into thinking this is some glossy David Lynch thriller...it's baffling, gritty, incoherent and cheap. One of the most terrifying cinema experiences I've ever had. Laura Dern did give the best performance of 2006, though.

Probably. At least, let's hope it's an error.
I dunno, I like the R1 more than the R2,has a more "un-Earthly" feel to it, like the movie. Plus no quotes, just a tagline.

I seriously doubt it will be 1.33:1, it's an Amazon mistake. I prefer the UK cover art but considering they're being released at roughly the same time I'll get whichever has is better + cheaper.
You should be alright. But this is like Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway taken beyond the point of no return.
Here's the R1 Artwork from Amazon.com, no extras listed, but it's a 2 disc set as well, so they'll probably be identical.

Funny thing though, they list it as being 1.33:1...

I know that David Lynch made this he is the creator of Twin Peaks, Dune, Lost highway, mullholland DR. And i like those movies. So i think i will like this one to. Am i right?

R1 will apparently be 2-disc too, released towards end of August.
It's more of a thriller than horror. But if you don't know anything about this movie or who made it or why it was made, you probably shouldn't watch it.
Is this movie a horror or thriller movie?
Thanks I'll take a look.
the R1 version is already available for pre-order from Amazon.
I wonder if Lynch films would benefit from looking rough, it may add to the surreal feel. I doubt he'll go back now he's in love with digital and the control it allows him.
Where did you hear about the R1? I'll wait to see which is better before picking it up. Any news on the studio releasing it? That will give a good idea what to expect.

Best film of the year by far. Not sure what version I`ll be getting, probably the R1 version :D
Great film! Cant wait for the R1 release. Traveled 3 hours to see it and it was worth it. I wish David Lynch would go back to film tho, the DV was rough looking to me. It will be interesting to see what it looks like on dvd...
The R1 DVD will be released on August 14th and will be a 2-disc set.
Had to travel to Manchester to see this at the cinema! But it was definately worth the trip - can't wait to see it again! Hopefully they'll include the "Rabbits" shorts as extras as they were missing from the "Best of DavidLynch.Com" DVD!
Something tells me the R1 DVD will be a mere shadow of this one....
Any news for R1?
I shall be grabbing this one when it comes out for sure :D
Fantastic. A 2 Disc Set too, double fantastic.
I missed this at the cinema due to it's pathetic release window, grrr. At least I've not had to wait ages for a DVD.
