I lost all respect for Singer a long time ago, for reasons completely separate.
I had absolutely no interest in this either, a friend dragged me into it and it was absolutely atrocious. By far the worst movie I've seen this year, and simply one of the worst I've ever seen. Halfway through it I was actually begging my friend to walk out (which I never do).
I still can't believe it's from the same human being that directed The Usual Suspects. I also lost all respect for Singer, not even looking forward to his new X-Men movie...
And for the record, Nicholas Hoult is an incredibly overrated mediocre actor.

A friend of mine dragged me to this. I have respect for Singer, so I went along.
But after this movie and Superman Returns, that respect is considerably diminished.
It had some seriously bland and cheesy moments, the score was ordinary too. Not a terrible movie, just consistently mediocre.
What a waste of 200 million dollars.

i like Nicholas Hoult (WARM BODIES was awesome!) but the movie didn't look good to me. i'll rent this to make sure. oh and all 3 DVD/BR covers are atrocious. on the 2nd cover, they have Jack looking above the giant and not even looking at his face/eyes. lol.
This movie is a mess. Not necessarily bad, but you definitely get the feeling that somewhere down the line everyone started to realize that things just weren't panning out the way they thought it would. The action scenes carry no tension, the characters without names are predictably disposable and our hero Jack is just bland.
But my biggest gripe against this movie is that it's so delusional on what it thinks would make a Princess character tough and resourceful. First she starts out in the typical trope of the Disney Princess 'wanting more' by sneaking out and experiencing what life is like outside of the kingdom. This lasts all the way until she is captured because after she gets rescued, she immediately jumps back into the Princess role like it was nothing. It's also disappointing that she doesn't really do much of anything throughout the length of the film outside of being the damsel. There's even a laughable moment where Jack tries to reassure her that it was thanks to her being kidnapped that they were able to fight these giants at all..... Yeah. She's not useless to the story, but she is useless as a character.

Not a bad film. It was passively diverting, but nothing else. The giants didn't look convincing at all, and that's hard to swallow considering its bloated $200M budget.
I'm personally glad Bryan Singer is going back to what he does best: X-Men movies.
