you hit it on the screws my friend, they surrendered the NC-17 rating, hence making the unrated version the theatrical NC-17 cut, and the dvd version is the edited R rated version, they recently recieved an R rating for an edited version the week after surrendering the NC-17. So in short for those confused, The unrated directors cut on bluray is the theatrical NC-17 cut, the regular cut on DVD is an edited R rated cut, censored in order to get an R rating. Hope that helps. Fantastic movie btw

See this bugs me with the multiple cuts. Basically like others mentioned in this case it just leads to confusion and to those who simply want to rent the movie I wonder what version netflix and redbox will carry. I hate doing a blind buy but I may have to. I wanted to see this bad but it never made it where I live. I imagine the NC-17 rating had to do with that

I imagine its a different cut altogether. I wasn't aware that Friedkin had to make any cuts. Maybe he didn't. He has been a bit of a revisionist lately, with 2 wildy different director-approved French Connection blu-ray transfers out there.
So... is the "Unrated Director's Cut" the NC-17 version, or is this a different cut of the movie altogether?
I saw this in theaters and really enjoyed it. It was NC-17, though, so how much could have been cut to justify an unrated director's cut release?
Unrated version only on Blu-Ray?? That's incredibly stupid...
