Warner has sent over artwork for the original 1933 RKO classic King Kong which stars Robert Armstrong. Newly restored from rare nitrate film elements and digitally mastered in glorious black and white, King Kong will be available to own from the 22nd November this year in two seperate editions. The first will be a standard two-disc special edition, whilst the second 'collector's edition' will arrive in a collectible keepsake tin with a 20-page reproduction of the original souvenir program, some original one-sheet reproduction postcards and a mail-in offer for a reproduction of a vintage theatrical poster. Extras on both include an audio commentary by Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston, with Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack, Ruth Rose, Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong, an I’m Kong: The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper 2005 documentary, a Merian C. Cooper Movies Trailer Gallery, an eight part documentary on the making of Kong (The Origins of "King Kong", Willis O’Brien and "Creation", Cameras Roll on Kong, The Eighth Wonder, A Milestone in Visual Effects, Passion, Sound and Fury, The Mystery of the Lost Spider Pit Sequence, King Kong’s Legacy) and some creation test footage with Commentary by Ray Harryhausen.
Available from the same day will be a King Kong Collection, which includes the two-disc edition of King Kong, along with two more new-to-DVD titles - The Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. The Son of Kong disc will include the theatrical trailer only, whereas Mighty Joe Young will include a commentary by Ray Harryhausen, Ken Ralston and Terry Moore, a Ray Harryhausen and The Chioda Brothers featurette, a Ray Harryhausen and Mighty Joe Young featurette, and the trailer. Retail for this one should be around $39.92, or you can own the two additional titles seperately for around $19.97 a piece. Art is attached:

I don't think the original Kong has EVER been released on DVD before. I think you must have a pirated version.
Universal has been at work restoring this print for YEARS so it's probably quite remarkable. I'm still undecided which version I'll get.

That was just a rumour, the DVD just has the original '33 theatrical cut.

Have you seen the restored version of citizen kane released a few years back? same technique is being used I think.
It should look like a different film. Not to mention a few snippets of footage that has been lost over the years has been found and re-integrated back into the movie

If all there is from the spider sequence is a "recreation", I see little reason to upgrade to this from the Universal DVD, available since 2003, with "'Twas beauty killed the beast" included...

The tin for me!!! Actually EzyDVD here in Aus has a whole heap of tins for quite an assortment of movies at the moment...

Too bad the collector's tin version isn't included in the boxed set... but the boxed set is the same price as buying the 2 separate "Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" so you might as well get the boxed set and the Tin because it will be the same price as buying the tin and the 2 titles separately. Plus, the week it comes out you know it will be on sale at Circuit City...

I saw King Kong once and the remake of Mighty Joe Young.
I'll definitely be getting the collector's tin version. I haven't seen this movie in a long time so it will be good to see it again.

I want my Kong!
I want all three films as well. The only problem here is you have to choose between the collector's edition that is housed in a tin that contains the souvenir program and one-sheet postcards or that very nice box for the King Kong Collection. I guess I'll have to go with the collector's edition and then buy "Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" separately. I can't wait to get my hands on these three gems!
I gotta add this... Whoever at Warner is responsible for dropping the snapper cases and utilizing classic poster art for your beautifully remastered catalog titles... damn you for making me poor!
