I agree with the majority that the original theatrical cut was too long, but entertaining nonetheless. However, the movie wasn't a huge splash at the box office (despite its $218 million gross in the U.S.), so I don't know why Universal is trying to follow New Line's success with an EE of "King Kong."
Unless the set includes a music-only 5.1 audio track of James Newton Howard's score (or some other extras that I'm interested in), I'm sticking with my single-disc edition (which already looks and sounds excellent).

I passed on the original version because I knew this would be coming. I too am not a fan of an extended version, but really want a commentary and some nice features, which I know will be included.
Ah, the dilemma.
Ah, the dilemma.
I for one am looking forward to this. Loved the film, and own the 2-disc SE. Will pick this one up for sure just for the commentary tracks. With LOTR, the original DVD release of the theatrical versions did not contain a commentary track, rather, PJ waited until the EE's, just as he's done with Kong. If anyone has ever listened to PJ's commentary tracks, you'll find that they are quite entertaining, and chock full of interesting tidbits. As well, I am hopeful that some extended scenes may help flesh out some of the weaknesses in the theatrical version. Kong, while not perfect, is an entertaining romp, and I can't wait to see what Jackson et al have come up with.
Actually King Kong was a big success. It costed $207 million and managed to make $544 million worldwide.
As for the number of discs, this will very much mean the first two thirds of the film will be on Disc 1, with the remaining third on Disc 2 and the extras carry on from there.

The only thing that will get me to double dip on this is if there is a commentary track and further "making of" that I do not have. Jackson does great commentaries, so that alone would make this worth a double dip. But I hope the movie isn't extended as it has been noted already and I have publicly cried for some time, this movie was already way too long. Please atleast give us the option of not seeing the extended scenes if they are added
And that is sad to say for me that I don't want extended or added back deleted scenes. Normally I'm a junky for that. But this film already pushed my patience, I don't need another 20 or 30 minutes to make me dislike it even more. And it isn't like I hated the film, I just never could figure out the point of taking a classic film and remaking it double the length of the original. I know it is THE film which made him want to become a film maker, yet it seems we were all made to witness his fanboy-gasm to the extreme.

Definately getting this! Kong was one of the best of 2005.
I'll get the 3 disc set just to see what was cut. I liked King Kong, it was too long though; The extended might be excruciating to sit through but I know I'll get suckered into buying it anyway. Curiosity killed the cat, and his wallet I guess.
I remember there being a shot of some kind of sea monster in the original preview, along with the Ann Darrow screaming on the boat bit. Not to mention quite a few monsters in toy form that didn't seem to make the movie. I'd agree that the theatrical cut was overlong, but DVD is different, there's a pause button and personal toilet.
If it's a half-way decent price, I'll get it. I'm a sucker for special features :p
There are alot of good shots cut out, about 40 mins. worth, including
-the famous Swamp scene,
-more Kong and Ann devolpment (including a crucial piece of Kong realizing he is a monster and Ann could never love him).
-The Venture crews' first encounter with a Skull Island creature (a gigantic flightless bird that Lumpy shoots)
-Kong vs. the Venatosaurus
-Extended Log Chasm and the fight with Kong and the Vastatosaurus is longer
Most of it is character development or dinosaur footage. I for one think this movie can never be too long.

I could watch a solid 4 hours of Dinosaur footage myself...
Haven`t got the first release yet, was well known that this was coming out. Glad I waited: love the movie and will be getting it :D

Why is it that so many people seem utterly convinced he started making movies around 1999?
About 1/2 of his movies have been double dipped...not exatly the "ENTIRE FILMOGRAPHY" really...
Though lord knows I'd like a SINGLE R1 issuing of Meet the Feebles.
I enjoyed this one in the theatres but could never bring myself to go as far as purchasing. Hm.

This is my favorite movie of all time. However, I don't know if I will buy this since I already own the 2-disc and the movie was long enough for me
I'll probably get this. But I'd love to know what the artwork looks like. I got the regular Special Edition back in March, I had no idea I'd have to buy it again. It depends on how much longer it is.
The dumbest Kong movie ever. Ann could never fall for Kong scene? Oh the humanity, she could not love a 50 ft ape and have mind blowing beastiality with him. Pure garbage..Im wondering if the people who liked this trash are born after 1980 & havent seen the real deal King from 1933. Or havent seen a real monster movie.
This film to me was another insult to Kong, I felt the actors were all miscast, nobody to root for, nobody to feel anything for, bad acting. Jack Black is NOT Carl Denham, and was a p**s poor choice and that blonde person potraying Ann, I wish Fay Wray would rise from the grave and stike her down & call her an idiot for wanting to love a 50 ft ape...and the ice skating too..oh lord what a dud.
Id rather watch the 1976 Kong, Jessica Lange screaming male chauvanist ape at the top of her lungs...
Peter Jackson may have a vision and respect for the 1933 Kong, but this revision was a total mockery of what the real Kong was from 1933. Even Kong in KK vs Godzilla was better !!
Some classics should just be left alone to be admired for what the true greatness of a movie is, not to be re-made by Jack-Off Nacho Libre Black & a nobody as Ann Darow and all the other nobodies in roles that shouldnt have been in...
To Peter Jacksons credit, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was great filmmaking if not overdone, but stay away from Kong please !

Naomi Watts isn't a nobody.
I didn't think this was too long. I actually love long movies and am glad it's extended.

King Kong EE has just been removed from Universals press website - so it doesn't look like we'll be getting any further details today afterall. Sorry about that! I'll keep you all posted though.
some people are really bitter. Although not my favorite of his, LOTR and Heavenly Creatures are amazing, it's worth it for commentary and just overall extendedness. I don't know about some people who have ADD but the logner a movie is the better. If anything Peter improved upon King Kong because he turned something stupid and shallow and tried to make a more indepth tale.
Peter turned King Kong into something stupid and shallow, which is par for the course for any Kong movie after 1933. Peter did not improve anything about Kong, he just did things the way he wanted to, his vision...and I didnt like it.
If you think Kong 1933 is stupid and shallow, you my friend are the one that's stupid.
As for Naomi Watts, well shes a half-watt no name,no talent nobody who insulted the character of Ann Darrow as far as I am concerned. I wish Fay Wray would have come from the grave to watch this nobody play her character. What a laugh riot. King Kong 2005 vs Godzilla Final Wars -- audience loses. Two bad films that deserve the MST3K treatment...
Thank God for 1933 King Kong, Godzilla 1954, Beast of 20000 Fathoms,Ray Harryhausen movies, and low budget B monster movies like Them,Tarantula,Deadly Mantis,Caltiki, King Ghidorah. I wish all those monsters would rip KK 2005 to a million little ape peices

Unless this comes inside King Kong's freakin head I probably won't get it....oh who am I kidding yes I will!
If you don't want to get the EE shut your hole and quit b***hing . What a bunch of whiney brats. I'm sorry, but there has NEVER been a Godzila movie that evens comes close to KK. I can't to hear ya b***h when son of king kong and king kong 3 come out. There are fun action movies, that's it. Don't take em too seriously. Enjoy them for what they are.
I'll watch the EE even though I thought the last hour of KK theatrical cut was too long.
Damn, someone doesnt like Kong 05'...and whats wrong with Final Wars? sure its not much of a traditional Godzilla movie, but where else (other then Destroy all Monsters) are you going to see all those Toho greats in one film?
Hey JackJack Off Off - EE THIS !
Godzilla movies, any of them , even the low budget ones from the 70s blow away KK 05 by light years..Id rather watch Godzillas Revenge with all the stock footage than watch KK 05
"Fun action movies" my ass. I cant imagine what kind of garbage Peter Jacksons vision of Son of Kong and Kong 3 will be.
Id rather watch KONGA LOL, or the Mighty Peking Man or even A*P*E (well thats a stretch)
What you call b***hing I call The REAL TRUTH about KK 05..piece of poo, just as bad as Final Wars with 30 second camoes of most of the monsters, Godzilla coming out 1 hour after the movie has started, more unlikable characters, the out of place music of Emerson, just more c**ppy monster movies in the 21st century. The only G film I didnt like- Final Wars. Angilas was cool, but otherwise just a bad G film..
I feel like this discussion board is full of people who are born after 1980 and have no clue about all the great classics that exist and are 100% better than anything out there today. New films for the New Generation..take em..

youppppiiii!!! I was waiting for this and here it is.well I am sad since my country is being destroyed right now but I hope that in November everything will be back to normal.I loved this movie and wouldn't be bothered or bored to sit and watch the extended cut.
P.S. please pray for my contry so that peace could be restored once more

Some of you people are really stuck in their classics. A lot of young people will get interested in the old version by this film. And while the old King Kong was a technical achievement, it's story was rushed. It think Peter's version is better fleshed out. And extended is even better ( with the above scenes ).
I found the original too long and boring - there had better be something special on this for me to consider it...
Manny Kiro wrote: Like the original wasn't long and drawn-out enough!

I'm dying for the SE of Heavenly Creatures
