Quote: A cult classic for fancy lads everywhere, Cabin Boy was met with a frothy blend of confusion and hostility upon first release, but has aged like a fine flagon of wine. From Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick, co-creators of the influential deconstructed sitcom Get a Life, Cabin Boy is one of the most surreal comedies ever released by a major Hollywood studio. After graduating from finishing school as a well-bred “Fancy Lad,” Nathanial Mayweather (Chris Elliott, There’s Something About Mary) prepares for a trip to Hawaii. But his plans are dashed when he mistakenly boards The Filthy Whore, a fishing boat manned by a ragtag crew of salty shipmates, and soon becomes the vessel’s hapless Cabin Boy. On his journey, he woos the feisty but beautiful Trina (Melora Walters, Magnolia) and encounters a host of eye-rubbing curiosities including an amiable shark man, a savage ice monster, a tobacco-chewing cupcake, and a six-armed seductress (Ann Magnuson, Love at Large) who relieves Nathanial of his virginity, much to the displeasure of her 30-foot salesman husband (Mike Starr, Dumb and Dumber). Inspired by classic seafaring yarns like Captains Courageous, Cabin Boy has grown in reputation over the years as a truly offbeat cult comedy-fantasy with Ray Harryhausen-like special effects, a hilariously oddball performance by Elliott, and a treasure chest of eccentric supporting players including Brian Doyle-Murray, Brion James, James Gammon, Andy Richter and Russ Tamblyn, plus a seminal cameo by Elliott and Resnick’s old boss David Letterman as an antagonistic sock-monkey vendor.

Quote: Roger Moore (Live and Let Die, Street People) and Susannah York (The Killing of Sister George) star in this explosive 1974 international conspiracy thriller, set in the South African goldfields and directed by Peter Hunt (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Death Hunt). A ruthless global cabal of financial investors plans to manipulate the price of gold on the world market – by sabotaging one of South Africa’s top gold mines and flooding it with millions of gallons of water. All they need is someone to take the blame. Manager Rod Slater (Moore) seems the perfect choice. He’s brash, rough and impulsive – just the sort of man to make a fatal mistake. As Slater embarks on an affair with Terry (York), the heiress granddaughter of mine owner Hurry Hirschfeld (Ray Milland, Panic in Year Zero!), the conspiracy tightens all around him and thousands of lives hang by a thread... Based on a best-selling novel by Wilbur Smith (Dark of the Sun, Shout at the Devil) and filmed entirely on location in South Africa, Gold is an unforgettable thriller with a breathtaking climax and a fantastic cast which also includes John Gielgud (The Whistle Blower) and Bradford Dillman (Compulsion).

Quote: They weren’t forgotten by history… they were left out on purpose! Screen legend Lee Marvin (Prime Cut, Monte Walsh) is Great Scout, Kay Lenz (The Passage) is Cathouse Thursday and with a little help from their friends (and enemies), including Oliver Reed (The Hunting Party), Robert Culp (Hickey & Boggs), Sylvia Miles (92 in the Shade), Strother Martin (Cool Hand Luke) and Elizabeth Ashley (Golden Needles), they’re out to take over the lusty world of modern Colorado in 1908. In this ribald adventure, Marvin (as a leathery frontier scout) and Reed (as his half-breed partner) try to recover $60,000 stolen by their arch enemy Culp. Instead they end up saddle-bagged with a bevy of Wild West prostitutes all named for the days of the week, one almost-virtuous young lady named Thursday, and an acid-tongued ex-sweetheart (Ashley). The stage is set for some big complications as this colorful group takes on the tycoons, madams and the effects of modern times. Actor turned director Don Taylor (The Island of Dr. Moreau, Damien: Omen II) directed this rip-roaring comedy western.

Quote: Loretta Young (The Stranger) is The Farmer’s Daughter – blonde, brash and so hilariously heartwarming that she won the 1948 Academy Award® for Best Actress in a Leading Role. As Katrin, she romps through one uproarious romantic adventure after another, an independent farm girl who becomes a politician and captures the heart of a Congressman along the way. The outrageous antics begin when Katrin, fresh from the farm, arrives in Capitol City ready to take on the metropolis. She takes the very first job she can find: housemaid in the wealthy home of urbane Congressman Glenn Morley, charmingly played by Joseph Cotten (Portrait of Jennie). But she’s no sooner tied the apron strings around her waist than she’s running for Congress. To complicate matters further, Morley is developing a case of infatuation for Katrin – and it’s looking like love that knows no political bounds. Directed by H. C. Potter (Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House) and co-starring Ethel Barrymore (The Spiral Staircase), Charles Bickford (The Big Country) and Harry Davenport (The Ox-Bow Incident). Quote: Screen icons Burt Lancaster (Elmer Gantry), Tony Curtis (The Vikings) and Gina Lollobrigida (Woman of Straw) form a troubled love triangle in the realistic, suspenseful film shot in the actual Cirque d’Hiver in Paris. Young American acrobat Tino Orsini (Curtis) is an aspiring trapeze artist who comes to Paris in search of Mike Ribble (Lancaster), a former aerialist who has retired after injuring himself attempting a triple somersault. Mike agrees to teach Tino the triple after circus performer Rosa O’Flynn (Katy Jurado, One-Eyed Jacks) convinces him to stop feeling sorry for himself and try to recapture some of the fame that eluded him. But when two men both fall in love with the beautiful Lola (Lollobrigida) – who uses them both to further her own ambitions – the triangle threatens the dreams of them all. Trapeze, directed by the great Carol Reed (The Third Man, The Fallen Idol) is highlighted by great performances and high drama, and all the actors performed most of their own stunts (Lancaster had previously been an acrobat in real life). Two of the film’s best features are the terrific Scope photography by Robert Krasker (El Cid, Brief Encounter) and the hauntingly beautiful score by Malcolm Arnold (The Bridge on the River Kwai). The wonderful Thomas Gomez (Key Largo) co-stars in this classic romantic drama.
