Not sure about that artwork. It's not bad at all but the color scheme is tonally different from the movie itself. Regardless, I will definately pick this one up. The original DVD was one of the first DVDs I ever received, way back in 1998.
I wonder how good the commentary is - if it is genuine or simply snippets from interviews sewn together
It wouldn't surprise me if it was an assembly of clipped interviews. But hey, interview snippets or not, that is one hell of a commentary track lineup.
Funny though, all of those people and Hanson STILL won't contribute to a commentary track.

Wow! That sounds like a great commentary track considering it incluides all the major players in the movie. I wonder if it's a real commentary or an assembly of clipped interviews.

Another worthy double dip..look forward to getting this
I love how they focus on Kim Basinger's 'assets' in the new SE cover. The way the cover's designed, it makes it seem that Basinger is the main character and not the detectives.

We first mentioned that this title was coming way back in April, and we've known it was in the works for some time. But Warner Home Video has finally officially unveiled the details: The studio will release an L.A. Confidential: Two-Disc Special Edition on both DVD (SRP $20.97) and Blu-ray Disc ($28.99) on 9/23. Extras on both will include audio commentary by film critic Andrew Sarris, an isolated music-only track, 14 deleted scenes, the 2000 L.A. Confidential TV pilot, the Whatever You Desire: Making L.A. Confidential documentary, 7 featurettes (Sunlight and Shadow: The Visual Style of L.A. Confidential, A True Ensemble: The Cast of L.A. Confidential, L.A. Confidential: From Book to Screen, Off the Record, Photo Pitch, The L.A. of L.A. Confidential and Hollywood Center Motel), trailers and TV spots, and the film's soundtrack promo. Additional details and specs are TBA."
I don't see deleted scenes listed in the press release. Alot was cut out and I'd hate to think Curtis doesn't want it shown... I'll still be buying though.
I'm gonna take a stab and say that these are the deleted scenes on the 2nd disc of the release:
•Formosa Café
•Sid Hudgen's Office
•Victory Motel
•Bidwell's Office
•Nick's Liquor
•Lynn Bracken's House
•Frolic's Room
•Pierce Patchett's House
•Movie Premiere Pot Bust
•Mrs. Leffert's House
•Nite Owl Café
•Navarette's Hole-up
•Fitch House
•City Hall
Should be pretty sweet, can't wait.

Horrible cover but a fantastic noir. The cover could have been so much more gritty.
Fantastic! Does this mean the Blu-Ray edition won't be a special edition?
The special edition snap-case looks pretty terrible by today's standards, so I'll have to go Blu.
The artwork could be better though.

bummer there is no "in movie experience" on the Blu. Could have been fun to watch that while watching the movie
That is an incredible cover! Kim's reflection is a cool touch! This was a fantastic film and one of my Mom's all time favorites! I know what she's getting for her birthday this year!

Great film. Lousy cover. Why couldn't they use the poster artwork?
thats a hell of a cover! really nice! ill be Blu-ing it for sure.
For those who think Kim's too big on this new cover, you DO remember the original...don't you?

Anyway, I like both. And it's a great film.

This is a film for grown ups sonny and anyone brought up on a diet of 50s film noir so if you don't like it piss off, I'm sure theres a forum for a Michael Bay film around here somewhere for ya.

A true case of a WORTHY double-dip if I ever saw one. Great artwork too, but I would have had Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe's pictures be separate. Love how Kim Basinger looks - it really emphasizes her beauty, and not just her 1950's noir sexiness. Hooray, good DVD cover for an even better DVD!
Great artwork, awesome set of extras, just a shame the film bored me rigid! Still for fans of the film, this a gem!
Figures...the one time I was actually content with the original art - and expecting it to be used for the special edition - and they change it up....still, I can't argue. It looks great. And I dig the reflection in the glass table, nice touch...all-around great concept.
Excellent Cover - I'm all over this Blu-Ray Release!
I think that's a very nice, classy cover. The film-noir style and Kim Basinger's sex appeal sold me on this movie.
Why doesn't Curtis Hanson do commentary tracks? I would rather hear from him, a writer or producer than some film critic/scholar who thinks they know everything about this movie.

time to retire the old disc....got it's 15 bucks worth and more, that's for sure
also the couch makes her ass look huge
also the couch makes her ass look huge
I think the cover's friggin' terrible...but almost looks like it was designed to work with the ugly blue bars of Blu-Ray (which I think often decimate the visual impact of cover art by offsetting colour balance)
It's a very film noir cover with the femme fatale on the front. Nothing misleading at all, i like it.
I'll be snapping up quite a few Blu-Ray discs come september and i've just read that the Indiana Jones Blu-Ray box set is set for a possible xmas release.

HOLY S**T!! Kim Basinger should look stunning in blu-ray. The rest of the film is pretty good too
yeah, she's hot. but they could have done something a little more creative. but sex appeal always sells the product. if that's what they at Warner are going for in the ad department, than this cover works. to people who haven't seen it, they could be mislead into thinking this is a softcore adult movie.
still, criticism's aside, I dig the cover.

So Kim Basinger is in this, huh? LOL. On her beauty, it's a nice cover, but a little overkill.
I prefer the Japan 2-disc artwork over this, even the snapper artwork on the 1st US release.

I love this movie and I can't wait for it on Blu!
Makes you wonder why toshiba bothered with HD-DVD then if they can transform a standard DVD into full HD. Sounds like a desperate attempt to compete with sony after losing the HD disc war if you ask me.
In answer to M@tt's post - the New Toshiba player is meant to "super up-convert" Standard DVDs to "high definition" Blu Ray quality. You can read more by going to the Variety Hi Definition webpage.
i enjoyed the film alot, don't know if i will buy this yet, is there a hdmi converter out there for people who have hd televisions that don't have a hdmi outlit on them
One of my all-time favorites! Let's hope they don't screw up the packaging...finally a double-dip that is warranted.
Finally. Warner let it slip this was coming nearly 3 years ago I think. I'll definitely be picking up the Blu Ray.
SO deserving of a special edition. I want to get rid of the c**ppy snap-case, too.
Alright! About time this was announced! I will definitely be getting this.
At Last!!!! My favorite movie ^^
From what I recall when it was first announced, the pilot was a prequel to the movie. Can't wait to get this disc and check it out!

Excellent Film!! I remember seeing this one three times in the theater.
september is gonna be a hell of a month for blu-ray, 3-4 titles must-buy that month alone.
Looking forward to the TV pilot, which had Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Vincennes... don't ask me how that fits in with the continuity of the film, 'cause I don't get it, either.
This is a double dip we need! One of the best new noir films.Up there with Chinatown.

You can't upgrade standard DVD picture to high def but you can upgrade to Hi-Def so why not? Anyway i don't know why Tosh doesn't just make a decent Blu-Ray player and be done with. Hope the Blu-ray version gets a decent remastering job.

It's great the interesting TV pilot is included. If the show was made to series, I wonder how it would have affected 24. So CBS not picking up the show meant that Sutherland could do 24 the following year.
Brilliant movie. Looking forward to seeing that TV pilot.

The SD DVD (which I picked at Wal-mart for $5) is a great DVD, that would put to shame many newly released DVDs...EVEN blu-ray discs...
