Great movie, packed with great performances by everyone.
Yeh this was a solid movie. I could see how there might not be enough action for some but I thought it was well acted and well paced and held my interest. I do wish Gary Oldman had more to do in it tho

Why?
He still does reviews on TV on the Reelz Channel.

That's a long way from being Ebert's second banana.
I liked a lot Hillcoat's previous offerings, THE PROPOSITION and THE ROAD, but LAWLESS played too generic and uninteresting to me, and everything felt like a retread of many other stories we already know.
Also, all characters were too stereotypical, and the movie presented them in a very false and manichaean way, asking you to side with the "good guys", painted as noble crooks in contrast with the sadist "bad guy", when they were just as bad. And the violence was much more restrained and "sanitized" to be more palatable to the masses.
I would guess this was Hillcoat trying to play the Hollywood game, but I have no interest in a neutered Hillcoat.
