It's a special filter we have in place to block people who don't understand audio codecs
Honestly Matt, do yourself a favour and wind you neck in because you're making yourself look foolish. Codecs are completely independent of audio channels and in any case The Little Mermaid was re-released in both DTS and Dolby Digital after its initial run (and SDDS come to that). Additionally, read up on the differences between Dolby Stereo in the home and in the cinema, as the latter is not limited to two channels as you seem to think. Masters are not inherently Dolby or DTS either.
As for The Incredibles, why would you listen to that in Dolby 2.0 when it was presented theatrically in DTS-ES and Dolby Digital EX?

The reason the DTS-HD track has more dynamic range is because it's not compressed. That's what it was mixed to sound like. You've apparently grown accustomed to the sound of the home video version of these films. Once again, the change to the original track is in the 7.1 channel version of the soundtrack. Disney should include original stereo/mono/surround/4-track options with these catalog releases. All Blu-ray and DVD releases should have the option for the original soundtrack whenever possible. But this soundtrack should also be as uncompressed as possible, and thus available in PCM, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD, because digital media cannot reproduce analog sound without digitally processing it.
Gabe Powers wrote: A 'Dolby' Blu-ray mix is compressed. It will not match the theatrical output, even of that era, not only because it is compressed, but because it is DIGITAL instead of analog. The Dolby the movie was 'given in' is an analog process that cannot be reproduced with your DVD or Blu-ray player. A DTS-HD MA, PCM or Dolby TrueHD would be uncompressed and be the better representation of the original mix. The problem is not DTS, the problem is that the 2.0 (or likely 4.0 in this case) soundtrack has been artificially remixed into 7.1 channels. The brand name 'DTS' won't have any adverse effect.
You don't understand audio codecs.
I understand codecs just fine, mr. rude. When I say Dolby mix, I mean Dolby 2.0 surround. The Incredibles had this, which allows me to watch the movie. What I've said, if you'd take your stuck up head out of your backside, is that I want an audio mix that resembles the one the movie had in the theater. Little Mermaid came out before DTS existed. I don't understand why it has DTS on the blu-ray.
Please don't respond any further to me. I don't want to hear it unless you'll quit being a condesending know-it-all.

The Incredibles had a DTS-HD Master Audio track, and DTS-HD has far too much dynamic range. Luckily, it also had a Dolby 2.0 surround track. I would like one for Little Mermaid, as I hate DTS and a 2.0 surround track wouldn't sound so bad.

I know that Disney's modus operandi has been capitalizing of nostalgia, so this release should be absolutely no surprise. For me, I parted ways with "classic" Disney a long time ago. I'm no longer sure if my fondness for these movies comes from my memories, the first time I encountered them as a child, or that each modern Disney film is programmed and researched to be as "successful" a story as possible. In other words, Disney's m.o. of nostalgia trigger just *feels* as inauthentic as it possibly gets. I know that's a ludicrous criticism to make of an industry (that's designed to sell and produce commodities) but these are supposed to be artistic objects, not endless waves of calculated production.
However, I can still belt out "Part of your world" at karaoke without the need of lyrics any day.

I DO know how codecs work. When I say Dolby mix, I meant the soundtrack was Dolby, instead of DTS or other audio. What part of that don't you understand ? If the movie was given in Dolby, then the blu-ray should have a dolby option.
It wasn't 'mixed' in Dolby. That's not how mixing works. It was delivered in Dolby in most theaters at the time because that was the standard. And TrueHD and DTS-HD are both ways of delivering uncompressed sound, they are not means for mixing sound. DTS-HD is just a brand. A 'Dolby Surround' soundtrack would be compressed. You don't know how codecs work.
Gabe Powers wrote: Matt Stilwell wrote: Hopefully, this will be like The Incredible and have a dolby surround track, too. It doesn't make sense for it to have a DTS-HD track. DTS didn't exist when Little Mermaid came out. I HATE DTS.
Spoken like someone that doesn't understand how audio codecs work. Little Mermaid wasn't mixed in 'Dolby' either, it was mixed for stereo surround. Ideally Disney would include an uncompressed 2.0 track, PCM, DTS-HD MA, or Dolby TrueHD.
I do know how codecs work. That's why I don't want it to have just a DTS mix on it. I could handle it having a TrueHD mix, but would much prefer a stereo surround track like it's supposed to, which is what I meant by Dolby surround. I just do not like DTS-HD Master Audio.
Also, I just checked, and when it was originally released, Little Mermaid was mixed in DOLBY....as I said and meant.

Aren't all the Disney features musicals?
a few weren't like Treasure Planet and Atlantis but they were also financial failures which is probably why they went back to musicals lol. a big reason i enjoyed those two was the non singing, plus they have amazing animation and a pretty good cel+cgi combo for their time.

glad to see the dvd extras will be ported over but is this really it for the new stuff? no big documentary or anything? i havent watched the dvd extras since it came out so maybe there's more in depth stuff than i remember but yeah...color me disappointed in that respect if this is it.
and it figures the 3D edition has the better cover.

This is awesome! I hope they use that stunning poster art of Ariel swimming up and not some tacky 5-minute job (which they definitely will do). The Peter Pan cover seems to be the only classy one in the Diamond line.
