anyone buying these should wait for the extended edition
S**tty artwork & no extended editions. PASS!!
Pass as well.
Pass...pass...super pass...hey New Line...guess you didnt think you made enough money off of these films already...Or maybe its Peter Jackson needing a new gold plated swimming pool so he and George Lucas can swim around and think of new ways to tweak their movies and in the process tweak our wallets....give us the definiative or at least branching version or NOTHING cause thats what you'll get from me at this point... oh and it better have the Goloum at the MTV Movie awards easter egg too....:-P
No extended......No buy!!!
reading this made me realize that as much as i like the series, i've only watched my extended collection once when it first came out...damn. lol
but yeah the only way i'm going blu for these movies is for the extended editions and even then, i dont wanna rebuy a whole collection. they should just release movie only versions as well. they did that to Jackson's King Kong and it was a great idea.

Really couldn't care less, until the Extended Editions find their way to Blu-ray, as they're the only versions I'll watch; to me, watching the theatrical versions is like reading an abridged version of a book.
Granted, I think the theatrical editions deserve to get the hi-def upgrade, too, seeing as how they ARE the versions that came out in theaters and are therefore historically significant films in their own right.

Why oh why do they not use seamless branching and have both versions in ONE set. Special features in standard dvd? Why? Then just give me the 3 movies on blu ray and no special features. A 3 Blu ray disc set.
I have the special features on DVD that I already payed BIG money for with the extended DVD set. Just Up convert the special features and put them on Blu ray. What's the point of Blu ray set if your gonna put half of it on DVD.
Maybe if this get's to under $50 I'll pic it up.

An instant classic!!! All about the Extended Editions though.
The extended editions are worse versions of the films, there's no way those versions could be Oscar nominated, they lack flow and the pace varies wildly. Obviously people want to see the extra scenes, but they were cut for a reason in the first place.

Yeah.
I don't understand I ppl don't care for the theatrical versions. Everyone love them even before the Extended version appeared and and now nobody wants them. Well, as usual for me I always like to have the theatrical version of a film, besides the other versions that may follow: DC, Extended cut, Unrated, Uncut, etc.

Indeed.
The Extras on dvd?! LOL What's up with Warner? Lately they are having some bad decisiond related to blu-ray/dvd releases.

Save for "The Two Towers," the EEs kill the pacing and tension present in the original theatrical cuts (especially in the third film). TTT is the only LOTR film that hugely benefits from additions like Eowyn singing at her brother's funeral, Faramir's flashbacks with his older brother and father, et al.
Releasing the original theatrical cuts FIRST is a good move on Warner Brothers' part in my opinion. I don't get why they elected to not upconvert or master the bonus material (like the trailers and the trilogy supertrailer) into HD.

Pass on this.
I happen to have just the extended editions on DVD. Are the extras on this disc the same as the ones on the theatrical DVDs, or are they the ones on the 2-disc releases that had both versions and some new Costa Boates stuff?
If these are new extras, then that would be the 4th set of extras for these movies. Not that I'm complaining, but taking into account rumors that Peter Jackson wants to have new special features in the extended edition Blu-ray releases, I think the only extras left for them to release the next time would be to release all the dailies of all the movies.

I'm not sure yet what I'm gonna do. I mean, I have the extended cuts on dvd already. Ya know, the limited edition ones with both the theatrical and extended. These are beautifully done films, but, do I really need them on blu. My blu ray player upconverts them just fine already. Maybe I'll pass.

I wouldn't call them historically significant films exactly but i wouldn't mind seeing how they look on blu.

pass. will wait. perhaps if we boycot these the message will hit home. extended cuts only!!
Add me to the Extended Edition bandwagon.... They're the only versions I care about now....

They were cut because the studio made Jackson cut them since they were too long. Jackson filmed all the scenes with the intent of having them shown as is, the EEs were Jackson's idea so that the films can be viewed without studio tampering....has nothing to do with what you just said.

It's good that the trilogy is coming to blu, but I'm passing on this in favor of the Extended Editions. My guess is they'll be out around the same time as the Hobbit to 'tie-in' marketing wise, etc.
What ?

The artwork isn't s**tty. The only bad thing about this release is that it doesn't have any commentaries. Maybe if they rerelease this, they'll do seamless branching and we'll get both the theatrical and inferior versions along with the commentaries.

Wrong. Jacson has stated that eh Theatrical versions are his DC and he left out all those scenes because of the pacing. Since dvd is another story, he decided to add them has an alternative vision but that they wouldn't work has theatrical versions in cinema theaters.

Super PASS! art work is so poor, this kind of editions deserve a special skin cover and a better art work...pass,pass,PASS!!!
There is nothing wrong with the artwork. Sure, it's not the poster/dvd artwork, but it's still pretty cool....
Definitely grabbing this day 1! It seems I'm in the minority , but I prefer the theatrical editions to the EE's (yes I did watch the EE's!)I couldn't imagine sitting there for 4 hours every time I wanted to watch these great movies! Anyway I totally agree with Jackson, the pacing is quite off!
