Matrix Collection (US - DVD R1)
We now have even more details along with some early artwork
Title: Matrix Collection
Starring: Keanu Reaves
Released: 7th December 2004
SRP: $79.92
Further details have begun to emerge on the new Matrix Collection which will be arriving in shops from the 7th December. It will be available in two editions. The first of these will be a standard (if you can call ten discs standard!) edition including the three films along with The Animatrix and six-discs of bonus material. This will retail at around $79.92. The second will be a collector's giftset containing the ten-disc edition along with a Neo minibust and an 80-page book with never-before-seen artwork and storyboards. The retail price for this one will be around $129.92. Now onto the discs themselves. Firstly, contrary to earlier reports, no extended cuts will be included. The Wachowski brothers are perfectly happy with the films as they are. There will be two new audio commentaries for each film - one from philosophers Ken Wilber and Cornel West (who analyze the meanings behind the films) and one from three professional critics who hated all three films! Also included will be all the scenes created for the Enter the Matrix video game, a new digital transfer for The Matrix and plenty more besides. Further specs can be found below:

Plus, I would hardly call THE MATRIX films an 'alternative form of cinema'...what a joke of a statement that is.

damn
damn i am 15 and i shouldnt of baught an ipod with my graduation money i hope my sister picks this up for me
Wow if you're a major fan of the movies then this must be something to drool over.
I'm not so I won't be getting it since I like the first and second but couldn't care less right now about the third. The animatrix is a lot of fun though.
Anyways cool set... wish they did something like this for Poltergiest... eh yeah right, but I can always dream.

I have the trilogy plus Animatrix, and I think I'll be sticking with that. No amount of extras in the world could make me shell out 80 bucks for films I already have, especially if they aren't new cuts.
Quote: I think it was more because most people couldn't be bothered to put the effort in to think about them...
I would if the W. Bros put some basic thought into the movie. The speech of the East-Indian program calling Dharma, Karma. That just shows the W. Bros were scraping for ideas.
"We put all our ideas into this film"(the first matrix).
-one of the Bros. W(of course paraphrased)

Hopefully they'll change the clear Collectors case.
hmmm....
It's weird. This is the first time that the collectors box that's more expensive, looks so bad. I think the Gift set is really stupid. The statue looks stupid. And that box? It looks like it's gonna break the first minute u open it. I like the other box that's like "The Godfather Collection." Much cooler. Good thing the better box is cheeper. Tottally buying it.
love all 3 of them, and now im gonna be spendin the money with a quickness to get it, but will pass on the retarded set withthe cheap case and neo big head bust, so if all of you complain and such and dont wanna get it, good, it means i can take my time getting it and no worries of it selling out!

Yeah, it's just you. And about 95% of the world's population. Still doesn't mean you're right though.
I found the first one very average and I hated the rest. The first is really overrated. It's just basically a pop-corn action movie.

Hmmm the artwork is very weak indeed. It feels so.. basic? but who cares.
Maybe it will have the 3-D effect like the teaser posters.

i agree shane. no statue set for me neither
Neo
The Neo model looks rubbish! I'll go for the regular box set. Strange that it doesn't even say something like 'The Matrix Colection' on the box cover.
so...
so thats the cover. Just the matrix code? I guess it's cool, but, I dont know. I wish it had said like "the Matrix Collection" or something. Oh well....i still LOVE it.
hell yeah!!!!!
im definetley gonna pick this up, it is one of the best dvds ever made
matrix
the morei think about it, they really should release the new matrix transfer as a 2 disk DVD andmaybe have some stores pull a kill bill and give away a box to put all 3 movies in.
just my two cents
just my two cents
Actually WB does include DTS on many of their DVD's such as their Lethal Weapon 1-3 DVD's, and Twister. All WB DVD's...
For the last time it's WB. There isn't going to be DTS.
December 7th. Nice. Birthday is the 12th so this would make a nice B-Day present.

somehow I dont think so
Unless they have DTS sound..I will not get it..if you can buy the remastered matrix seperately.I would consider it..but hey..living in oz problably won't get it..
So, is that clear case definetely the final for the collectors edition?
Yeah $60 was too good to be true. $80 MSRP sounds more like it. Still, take 25% off of that and you still get $60. So expect on-line retailers selling this set for about $59.xx.
It's worth it. Like Michael Contini said, figure $14 per movie equals $42, plus Animatrix for $10, makes $52. Then you get 6 discs of extras. Hell yeah, $60 is well worth the price for all that.

darn
darn it (not sure if i can say damn, i dont' want to get banned here XD, oops )
i knew that $60 price tag was too good to be true.
I mean, $20 for both sequels and even as low as $10 for the original only add up to $50, and that would have ment all that extra crap for only 10 bucks....
therefore i saw this price bump coming.
i still htink it's overly worth it
figure the movies, plus multiply the price of the oriignal revisited disk by 3 and you get $95, hell, this is well worht the money.
*sorry for the math lesson*

December 7th, the date that shall live in infamy...$20 is some bump. I'm not so sure this is worth it anymore for that kinda money. That will probably go for nearly $100 in Canada. Definately not worth it for a set that seems full of mainly recycled material. Maybe I'll put it on Santa's list and make him pay for it instead.
The release date has been set for the 7th December, and prices have been bumped up a bit. The standard set will retail at $79.92, whereas the giftset will set you back around $129.92
OMG
OMFG. Will you freakin stop posting every 5 min. I swear. Once Someone opens there mouth, you are already on them with like a 20 page essay on why they are wrong. Give it a break already.

Yeah, I mean, the first movie was significantly more accessible than the second and third chapters. The first movie (for those who weren't familiar with Japanese animation, science fiction, and wildlife documentaries that displayed the beginnings of bullet-time) was an extraordinary display of conceptuals and story in a premise that wasn't too difficult to grasp. It was obvious. The second and third films are not obvious. The Wachowskis needed a hit. They made The Matrix, which only skimmed the surface of the depth they would later go into once they'd ben established as directors that could make bucks for their studio lifelines. Then, with a fan-base, and a plethora financial support, the Wachowskis set out to make the most indepenent, alternative big-budget movie, like, ever. And, of course, 'alternative' has that name for a reason.

You "knew the hidden meaning of stuff"? Okay, great, but that's not what makes this story exceptional. Besides, just from your register (and from past experience of other self-proclaimed 'enlightened' viewers who believe they know everything about the trilogy), I'm willing to bet that you don't know quite as much as you claim to.

"Just eye candy"? Yeah, they were beautifully presented with some spectacular action sequences, but most of the time in the movies was spent on 'those' monologues and presenting some very interesting discussion and building a captivating universe that puts depth and spirit into the world outlined in the first film. Also, your idea of a "good plot" and "good story" for the first film actually culminates to an admittedly hurried interjection of 'plot' upon capturing Morpheus and suddenly introducing a rather poorly constructed excuse for tension in terms of the 'access codes' to Zion's mainframe. Despite people's headless cries, the story to the first film had nothing at all complicated about it. Furthermore, the "original" first film was really just an adaptation of Gibson's Neuraomancer and a concept that was not alien in the world of science fiction and Japanese animation. What the sequels actually do is turn The Matrix from merely an offshoot of an existing medium into the Wachowskis own mythos. The sequels are, ultimately, more original than the original, as Keanu put it, "giving flesh to a cartoon, soul to a machine".
The simplistic 'good vs. bad' premise of the first film has been shaded in. And, unfortunately, shades of grey are not a popular medium for the usual Hollywood tripe we're used to.

Sorry, I just don't buy into that. When I listen to a commentary track I want first and foremost a writer/director commentary... I want to know what was going on in the filmmaker's heads when making the film. Having other types of commentary for the SFX work or whatever is nice and all but doesn't get to meat of the filmmaking process. The critics' commentary on this is different and sounds a bit interesting I'll grant you that, it would have been a nice aside to actual writer/director commentary. Instead it is all we are left with as far as the commentary tracks go.
There are several occasions where I have double dipped specifically for writer/director commentary and I would have again on this release. As it is I will stick with what I have already sitting on my wall.
I'm sorry that you "don't buy into that". Have you heard the recent thirty minute discussion between Larry Wachowski and Ken Wilber (one of the dudes who will be on the commentary tracks)? Their intention is quite clear, and it's unfortunate that you don't want to accept alternative forms of cinema. It's cool though - it's all about individual taste.

Well, didn't the R1 release of A.I. have DTS?
But anyway, I don't understand people who post here and whine about hhow bad the movies are. I mean, seriously - do you walk into the store, pick up a dvd and tell the clerk that "this movie sucks, I'm not gonna buy this", put it back to the shelf and leave? I admit, I haven't seen the sequels, but I think their quality depends solely on how high expectations you put on them.
Either way, whether I'll buy this or not depends solely on whether they include that darn Japanese audio track for Animatrix in the R2 release...

It really does annoy me when people say this. Reloaded and Revolutions were far more complex than your average Hollywood sequel, and they at least tried something new. I'll be the first to admit that they had faults, and that I was disappointed with the execution in Revolutions, but a lot of this can be forgiven when taking into accout what the Bros. were trying to accomplish. I love the first film, was positively rabid about Reloaded, but found Revolutions disappointing.
You have to remember that they lost one of the pivotal characters - the Oracle - part of the way through filming. If Gloria Foster had lived I think the third film would have been an entirely different beast.

The reason the Brothers don't do a commentary is because they themselves have their own interpretation of their work, and they don't want their interpretations to become 'the law' on interpreting The Matrix because they wanted it to be open to interpretation and received differently by everyone - that's why you have a commentary track telling you one side of the story (the poeple who felt their experience with the trilogy was a worthwhile one) and another that tells you why some people (well, most people) really resented the trilogy. Everyone received it in a different way, and it's fantastic to see directors not only encouraging that (it's about as "£uck Hollywood" as you can get), but actually integrating it into a part of the whole artistic experience that is abstract expression.

Jesus, you just can't win with some people.
If a set includes just one extra disc (Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Godfather) its too little.
If its a massive 10 disc collection, its "presumptious".
Well if the trilogy sucks don't you think its a good idea to fill it up with extras to add a little value to the suck-fest?
Well, I could not be happier!
GOD EXISTS. THANK YOU.

Why couldn't George lucas done something like this and went for a 7-8 DVD set with both versions of each movie? Oh, well. The Matrix Trilogy box set does look cool anyway.
the video game scenes...
in the video game, one of the scenes has monica bellucci kissing jada pinkett smith. and for that alone am i selling my 3 dvds already and buying this set. plus it will look a hell of a lot better on me shelf.
cool

The details above simply state that the scenes will be included, not integrated into the film as originally suggested by Jeol Silver.

I considered picking this up even though I already own the trilogy, but after seeming some of the features this now holds no interest for me.
"and one (Commentary) from three professional critics who hated all three films!"
Yey! Just what every fan of the films wants. How about the W Brothers dropping the whole mysterioso schtick and actually doing a commentary track for the films themselves.
A movie is one big marketting ploy.

think im the only one who hated these movies?
Yeah, it's just you. And about 95% of the world's population. Still doesn't mean you're right though.

Just my two cents fifty.

Ill pass. If it came with the extended cut that was rumored, i would of got it. Il stick with the three i got now
Once again I will state my desires. Give me the best damn video and audio possible for the DVD format and house them in keepcases. That's all I want. Warner seems to be listening because their recent crop of releases have had marvelous transfers and keepcases. I will wait and buy the remastered Matrix when it sees a separate release. For now I will rent if I desire to see them.
Will they release these separately?
Com'on folks....this is such a tired old question every time a new box set comes out packaging already released movies together. How many times have they ever released new "remasters" separately. I can think of just two. The Godfather and the Aliens sets.
The purpose of this Matrix Box Set is to include every possible extra into one box. Each movie is getting its own "Revisited" disc, and then the set comes with three additional bonus discs with general information about all three. Plus it comes with the Animatrix disc. Something that I have been reluctant to buy because of its current package being a snapper.

I certanly won't be buying this. This is just one big marketing ploy, I'm not really interested in the endless discs of featurettes on how they made the films, as it's basically done with computers and wire-work.
I'm not interested in the philosophy of the matrix, I'm not interested in what the critics who hated the films had to say about them.
Also, it's been confirmed that all the extras that are on the discs we have now, arn't going to be in the box set.
It's all a massive con, and very presumptious of the directors to think that their trilogy deserves 10 discs!

Don't treat the artwork as final quite yet, it could well change before the set is officially announced. Stay tuned.
Wait, so for the collector's set, the case is clear? That sucks. Does anyone think they know how much that would cost?
I'll pass. Any news if they release these individually? I might get the first one then.
The clear case looks very cheap.
I don't know about Matrix and Revolutions, but the extended cut for Reloaded is the theatrical cut with the 23 scenes shot for the video game Enter The Matrix inserted into it. This is mentioned in the details above.
Now that I think about it I don't think there ever was an idea to include extended versions of the other films. Was there?

I gotta own the collector's giftset

As much as I think that Reloaded is horrible until the Architect shows up and Revolutions is better than people get it credit for, as a fan of trilogies, I've got to get this thing.
When I heard it was coming out, I sold all three of the previous versions on DVD. I'm completely intrigued by everything this set is offereing.

I'll stick with the three I already own.
Well sod that then. No Wachowski commentaries and only the standard theatrical cuts... Hopefully they'll release the new edition of The Matrix seperately so I can get a decent re-mastered NTSC version to go with the sequels.
Commentary?
