Very true, it's the only post-Opera Argento movie we can honestly say we enjoyed.

I may be shot down in flames for this by fans but I watched Suspiria for the first time last night and I have to say, I found it quite over-rated and not a patch on Stendhal. But hey tha's just my opinion... I know to many it's a classic. I've got Inferno on it's way in preparaion for watching Mother of Tears and completing the trilogy.
As for the Blue Underground, all their releases are Region 0 (NTSC) and have played fine on my R2 only coded players. In regard to Argento films, I've got Deep Red, Opera, Stendhal, Suspiria on the BU label and they all play fine. Plus, Tenebrae on the 2-disc R2 through Anchor Bay, which is essentially what the BU releases are, although in some respects they've cleaned up the transfers. I've also got Fulci's Zombie (uncut) and House by the Cemetary (uncut) on the BU labels. You can get them really cheap. Plus, the recent BU release of Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue is well worth picking up (also uncut and R0).
Oh and finally, I've picked up Alan Jones's Profondo Argento in paperback. Heard REALLY good things about it, so thought I'd hunt it out.

I liked one of his modern films - Non ho Sonno. I found it just as good as his old Giallo.
There is going to be a US box-set of Argento movies coming out in two or three month's time - presumably to coincide with the US release of The Mother Of Tears.
The set includes Tenebre (newly remastered), Phenomena (newly remastered), Trauma, The Card Player & Do You Like Hitchcock? Amazon.com are listing it at $45.

Are they Region 0? Nice.
Yes, the way old version are around is a problem (esp in 2nd hand shops) in the UK.

Hi Dave,
The problem I found was that there are various (cut) versions of his films still floating around. Originally I hired Stendhal and Bird from my local BLockbuste for a £1 each but returned them both unwatched when I realised the were cut - Stendhal had almost 10mins missing!!! Therefore, I started importing - plus from the reviews i've read of the R2 editions (even the more recent uncut versions, the transfers aren't great. However, the Blue Underground special editions are definately worth importing because they are all Region O and therefore, can be played on our UK players. I'd highly recommend them. :O)

Actually I don't think any Argento is cut in the UK anymore.
"Bird" may be, but that was down to the print offered to the BBFC, they would pass that no problem now.
even "Standhal" has since been pat uncut.
Plus they are all nice prints bar a 2nd full screen release of "Phantom" ('Tartan' has it widescreen) and "Bird" again.
True the R1 special editions tend to be much better, but if you can't play them then the R2 releases are now actually very good substitutes.

I've recently been buying Argento's back catalogue on unrated R1's through Blue Underground - mainly because the majority of his films on R2 are so shockingly poor (and cut!). Anyway, I've yet to watch Suspiria or Inferno but I did sit and watch The Stendhal Syndrome the other day and thought it was very good. I was very surprised by the various representations of gender/sexuality in the film, plus the scene with te mouth/razor blade was just nasty... I for one am looking forward to adding Mother of Tears to my collection!
Oh and it should be noted, the info above is slightly incorrect - there is a bonus material - just a trailer!!

NW) We really want to enjoy this one, but you can't help but think that modern Argento dictates that it will be heading south - the rather good Non Ho Sono aside.
KW) Indeed. It looks as though the 25+ year wait for the conclusion of the Three Mothers trilogy has been a bit of a let-down.

The huge mistake here was leaving behind all the colour styling, editing and music that made the 'Three Mothers' films what they were.
And after such a long wait it was a chance for many of us to see a "Suspiria" styled film on a big screen.
I was lucky to catch a screening a few years back of "Inferno", but for a whole generation it would have been a great chance to see full on Argento at the cinema.
Instead we had muted colours, dark and drab design, no real style and a boring 3rd rate "Omen" based score.

I had great hopes for mother of tears but it fell flat on its overacting over directed face. not as disgustingly awful as phantom of the opera but Argento is still handicapped by not being a native english speaker and therefore the dialog is comedy material as usual( his co scripter Jace Anderson has half the blame ). the movie is amateurish and uneven. Udo is totally wasted and the ending is just plain anticlimactic and pure 80s "crazy italian" cheese.
If Mother of tears was directed by Uwe Boll everyone would make fun of it and we would see some honest review, instead we get the "the master of horror is back , it has to be good" kind of reviews.
But I don't know what we can really expect from the master almost 40 years after Crystal Plumage and Deep Red.
heres hoping his next movie titled GIALLO with Ray Liotta , Gallo and Asia Argento is a return to form but I´m not holding my breath.
Mayby if Gallo gets a fellatio from Asia, or Liotta we´l get something instead of his sleep inducing offerings of late.
- Ett tag sen jag läste Fangoria borde kolla in nått nummer och drömma mig tillbaka till lumpar tiden :-)

i was hoping this would have come out at the cinema as its better to see dario argento movies on the big screen
i really liked this movie. (IMO) it's the most coherent storyline of the trilogy. it's very gory, crazy and fun, too! Asia Argento does a great job in the lead role. i'd definately buy this and i'd recommend it to horror movie fans.
definitely looks like a film for Gabe to review (wait, he probably will sooner or later).
Looks like Darth Sidious' mum to me...
I'm so buying this! Haven't seen it as it hasn't played in Sweden and it probably won't, but i've read about it in Fangoria and it sounds really creepy; lots of strange scenes.
Probably won't live up to Suspiria and Inferno, but still; it's Argento and it's the third mother film!!
Love the cover and the font! Do they really have to have the "From the director of Suspiria" line that big and at the top though?
