New statement from Clive Barker’s Office:
The Nightbreed Director's Cut is an entirely different film than the one which was released in theaters. Its 20 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, but it contains over 40 minutes of new and altered footage. Clive oversaw the reconstruction and edit himself, personally ensuring that, at long last, he was able to tell the story he always wanted to tell, but until now, had never been given the chance. Once the scenes were reordered, and the original film footage restored, the entire film received a brand new sound mix and color pass. It is, in every way, a different movie. It contains more story, more monsters, and there's even a musical umber. Ultimately, what we've delivered is a love story 25 years in the making.Final details on the two retail sets are as follows:

All the original information follows:
At San Diego Comic Con this year Shout Factory imprint Scream Factory announced they might have the extended cut of Clive Barker's
Night Breed
coming out sometime next year. Now they have an official press release to verify the claim, which I have included below.Quote: Shout! Factory and Morgan Creek Productions officially announced today a strategic distribution alliance to bring Clive Barker’s classic horror film
Nightbreed
extended director’s cut to the home entertainment marketplace in the U.S and Canada and on digital entertainment platforms next year. The announcement was made by Shout! Factory’s founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos along with David Robinson, President of Morgan Creek Productions. The news initially broke at Comic-Con 2013, however the agreement formally reached by both parties occurred today. For years rumors swirled about substantial missing footage from the film. A fan-driven movement was created (www.OccupyMidian.com) to see the full version of the film restored and re-released, which was not only a more faithful adaptation of Clive Barker’s book 'Cabal,' but is what originally he intended
Nightbreed
to be.Clive Barker said, 'I had a dream about the tribes of the moon. They would live in a city called Midian and, though they were monsters of every shape and size, they would be the heroes of a movie called
Nightbreed
. However, when I made the movie, the studio was not comfortable with this inversion of the classic structure. They wanted the monsters to be simple-minded scare machines, while I wanted them to be the dark side of all of us, mysterious and misunderstood. Finally, with this new version ofNightbreed
, which contains over forty five minutes of previously unseen material, my original vision has been realized. Come with me to Midian, the city of monsters. The tribes of the moon await us.''We are excited by this opportunity with Morgan Creek and are huge fans of Clive Barker. His cinematic works and brilliant storytelling continue to captivate fans worldwide,' stated Shout! Factory’s founders in a joint statement. 'We look forward to working closely with Clive to bring his original vision to life.'
Shout!’s Scream Factory plans an aggressive rollout of
Nightbreed
extended director’s cut through physical home entertainment releases and a variety of digital entertainment distribution platforms sometimes next year.'We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the fans,' noted Robinson. 'Without their hard work and persistence, this would have never become a reality. Clive Barker is one of the greats, and we are tremendously proud and excited to be working with him and Shout! Factory on this release.'
Update
: The fine folks at Shock Till You Drop noticed a Fangoria interview in which Clive Barker and Seraphim Films' Mark Miller state that the Scream Factory release willnot
be the Cabal Cut, but a newly assembled director's cut.Quote: The Cabal Cut was created by us in-house from the footage we found in the storage rooms. This 160-minute beast has every bit of
Nightbreed
footage we had access to incorporated into the cut. We put everything we found back in a) just to be able to say we'd seen that version and b) because we needed as much of the proverbial scultpor's rock to chip away from for what would become the finished masterwork: The Director's Cut. More importantly, the VHS footage will be put through a high-definition digitization process to make certain that this is the best version of Nightbreed possible.Hopefully there will be an official announcement from Scream Factory on this matter, though there is still no release date set for their release.
Update Number 2
: There will be two versions of the film released on Blu-ray on October 28th of this year. The Limited Edition collection (only 5,000 sets produced) will include:

- Collector’s Book with an essay and rare photos
- Slipcase includes newly designed artwork approved by Clive Barker
- $79.97 SRP
The Special Edition collection will include:

Pity the compression will probably be sub par...

they weren't able to find all the original footage so some is the VHS quality stuff from the Cabal Cut. i imagine they threw in some of that in the deleted scenes just to have it be complete as possible since they couldn't put it in the final movie in that state.

I'm a bit confused. What was updated today (9/3/14) that caused this to be moved to the top of the "All the latest North American Blu-ray highlights" list?
Update Number 2 would seem to be the reason, but I was under the impression that the only way to get the Theatrical Cut was by getting the Limited Edition 3 disc version. I've seem nothing that says it's included in the Special Edition 2 disc version.
Nevermind. Found that "Further Details:" is what's new on a different site.

I remember seeing this in the theater back in 1990, of course we were only treated to the theatrical version but even that version was dull and lifeless.. don't get me wrong, it's a good movie (from) a technical aspect, the makeup is wonderful, very inventive, very very Clive Barker, the sets are good too and there are 2 great performances in this movie, one from Charles Haid as the local Police, great performance (against type for him) since I was only used to seeing him in 'Hill Street Blues', the other comes from David Cronenberg who plays (quite deliciously too) a depraved serial killer (he should've acted in more movies) His performance is quite chilling, so normal.. IMO Craig Sheffer was totally miscast in this, such a one dimensional performance, no screen presence either. I fully welcome the chance to rewatch it as Barker intended though.
So f**king relieved that they found and are restoring the original film elements for all the lost footage. $80 is indeed very steep, but I will find the money for it. Besides, it's not a Shout-store exclusive, so it should drop a few dollars for other places like Amazon, etc.

I have seen no mention of say Arrow picking up this title!?
I've preordered my today, from the Shout website.
There are Multi Region Blu Ray players, that Don't fall down when there are updates to them. I have the Panasonic DMP-BDT120 Which is a Hard Ware attachment to the player, so Any software update will Not effect the Multi Region modi faction.
The players cost around £80- £100
There's no need to miss out on ANY Blu Ray disc from around the world!

Morgan Creek majorly screwed with Blatty's version which didn't even contain an exorcism. They forced the inclusion of Mr Patrick who played Father Karras where it was only supposed to be Brad Dourif for the duration. I don't know what else got cut but tonnes of stuff had to go to make way for the tacked on Exorcism.
Blatty has always wanted to make his own version but the word from Morgan Creek has always been that the footage is lost forever.
There's a great fan edit by Spicediver that attempts to give you an idea of what Blatty's version should have been if you are interested in checking that out.

I will have to to get the three disc limited edition
very cool news....people are already complaining about the price point of the limited edition but thats SRP so chances are it'll be much lower when released. and even if not, considering you get the original version and hours of extras, all stuff the regular edition lacks then i can see why its more expensive. not to mention its limited, that always raises prices of items.
so i'm definitely hoping to get the limited but if i can't, least i'll still have the director's cut so its all good.

Damn, I guess this puts to rest the idea of them actually locating the film elements. That sucks hardcore.

As far as I know, what was being shown at festivals was a workprint from a tape source, hence the horrible quality. I'm assuming Shout will be working with the film elements from Morgan Creek's vaults, and that's probably why it will be next year before we see it.

I can't wait to see this version of the film. I have heard about it since last year. Can't wait for the release on Blu-ray next year

I don't hold out much hope for the picture quality. The extra footage cut into Hellraiser 3 looked diabolical.

Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Yes! Yes! Yes!
But enough about my Herbal Essence shampoo. This Nightbreed news is rather neat too.

No theatrical version.
very cool news...sucks that its gonna be next summer apparently so another year to go but least its coming. i am curious if the new footage will look seamless or if it'll be like the Army of Darkness extended cut as i've heard it wasnt in the best of shape to begin with.
and would they include the theatrical cut as well? because i havent seen that in so long it would be fun to watch that first and then do the cabal cut.
