Oldboy (US - DVD R1)
Tartan has sent over artwork for the upcoming US DVD release
Title: Oldboy
Starring: Min-sik Choi
Released: 23rd August 2005
SRP: $24.99
Tartan Video has officially announced Oldboy which stars Min-sik Choi, Ji-tae Yu and Hye-jeong Kang. The thriller, from Korean writer-director Park Chanwook, will be available to own from the 23rd August, priced at around $24.99. I'm afraid we don't have the full details on the technical specs for this one yet, although Tartan has confirmed the addition of an English Language track for the first time. The packaging also seems to indicate a Korean DTS track. Extras will include an audio commentary by the director and cinematographer, an interview with Park, deleted scenes and a trailer created by Nikolas Pueringer, a University of Wisconsin-Madison student who beat 132 other entrants in a promotion on iFilm.

If you should come across someone willing to spoil the ending for you, be sure to equip ear plugs and kill them.

Great movie, this is. Pick it up, I will.
That cover art sucks. Why the hell don't they use the cover art from the region 2 DVD? I really look forward to this and when they release it on DVD "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance." Good movie, but a lot more flashy than "Sympathy" and a little less cohesive but still "Old Boy" is tons o fun.

In that case, I think I need to pay a visit to the New Yorker office. Permanently. Wait a minute: normally when someone puts permanently as a stand-alone sentence to add emphasis to the manliness of their previous statement it makes sense. Ah well, who cares? Permanently.

ARGH!
I just realized another reason why that cover art sucks: the Quentin Tarantino seal of approval? The guy's a stuttering mess when it comes to talking about movies, which is eminently displayed by the fact that he couldn't deliver that statement himself. Couldn't they have gotten someone with a smaller ego to quote (in this case even Harry Knowles will do) or the fact that the film won at Cannes? Hell, even a quote from Roger Ebert would do. Or Stephen Holden. Jeezus, not QT. I love his quote for "Chungking Express": "I love to like a movie this much." Whoo-ee, the man can arr-tik-you-layte like nobody else.
That cover is far better than Tartan's awful R2UK coverart. Looks like thus far the R2UK shits all over this release.
Horrible cover art. I have the korean special edition and it's cool looking. They should drop the qoute and put the Cannes award thing on there.
Oldboy
I am not a huge fan of the coverart.
This film, however, is up there with my favorites of all time.

I'm pretty pissed that Tartan didn't release the same 2 disc version they did in the UK.
I ordered the 2-disc region 2 version, and it looks to blow this US version away... typical. The american "wal-mart, let's only buy the full-screen edition, sound format doesn't mattet cause i don't have to rewind tapes anymore crowd" it's sad, i know

Are you kidding? The region 1 cover art is so blatantly photoshopped and cut and pasted that it's laughable. And the quote is one of the worst I've ever seen. At least the region 2 one has some class rather than blaring ineptitude and low class by declaring that this film has the QT seal of approval. Feh.

Whew, you and I have different ideas of "fun" I guess. This may be the best film I've seen in three years, but I'd never discribe it as fun.

Stupid quote aside, I'll take this cover art over the UK one any day of the week. The UK cover looks like a cheap fan-made version of the cover for the Collateral DVD.
I wana see this badly, I'll definitely check it out.
I rather like the cover art, even though I agree the Tarantino quote is unneccecary.
Also, nice signature, Gabriel. I just spotted the 2nd season at the store the other day, with no idea it was out already.

Good thing I have the import which has a cool cover and is most likely not edited.

Definitely want to see Oldboy since an Entertainment Weekly reviewer hated it.

Who cares about extras? The movie rocks. I buy DVDs because of the movie, I could give two craps about extras.

Well, what pray tell would you call it? It was a lot of fun to watch Oh Dae Su go through the motions of finding his tormentor and I stand by that statement. What else could you honestly call it? It's not like the "Deer Hunter" where it's so intense that even you think it's a great movie, you don't enjoy it as a fun film. "Oldboy" is a lot more flashy and a lot more playful than Wook Park's "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," and while it's not the better of the two, it is a lot much more of a popcorn movie than the latter.

I would have to agree that it is fun. Some parts are hard to watch, but overall it was quite enjoyable. The hallway fight scene is an absolute blast to watch and there are some really funny touches (ie. the dotted line when he raises the hammer...i almost laughed out loud).
But yeah, absolutely a fun movie.

I guess I can't think of a better discriptive word, to me "fun" doesn't quite do it. Despite the dotted-line bit, the majority of the film felt to real to be fun. Personally I find reality either frightning or mundane, rarely fun. Again, I honestly think Old Boy was the best film I've seen in years, and I enjoyed watching it, but fun isn't the word I'd choose.
One of the best movies out there, worth taking the time to view it, even though it's subtitled....
