It's a very rewatchable movie in my opinion.
Will buy.
Will buy.
I love this director, and the film was pretty great right up until the end. Not the directors fault, or acting. But the story. I hated the final act. And people in the theater I saw it in were actually laughing. Still, it's worth a rental. Very stylish. And Dustin Hoffman is just amazing in it.
Love the film, have the thai DVD. I've seen it like ten times about now, still just as great as it was the first time i saw it. That cover art has to be revised. That's just awful! Use the original poster art over the whole thing for God's sake!
The score for this movie was very impressive and fitting -- the fact that Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek mostly composed electronic scores before just makes it more impressive. With three composers working on the film, the score is just beautiful. Haven't seen the film yet, but the score is definitely something to look forward to.
f**k paramount! this is one of the best 3 movies of last year.not only paramount f**ked up the release of this film to theares but now the dvd too.
do you call this an artwork?! plus,no SE?!
so far we have these releases:
1-R1=rubbish=boycott
2-R2 French (it includes 4 audio commentaries but it's not english friendly)=boycott
3-R2 German (it includes 4 audio commentaries but it's not english friendly)=boycott
4-R3 Korean (2 Disc+OST CD & Novel Premium LE,sounds like a good release but the novel is apparently in korean and you never know what they will do with the nudity)=pending
5-R2 UK (no online reviews yet but it has no commentaries but it's a 2-disc special edition full of extras and it's the best english friendly release so far) plus, the artwork is OK and i think it comes in a digi pack.= wait till it drops in price.
R4=where are you?
i also would like to add that i would wait for R1 SE but i wouldn't hold my breath cos it doesn't have Will Ferrell or Zombies.

A truly intoxicating movie from a long considered unadaptable book.
The ending is, well...see it and you'll know what everyone is referring to.
Ack...don't care for the cover art...wish they had just used the poster art but what can you do in this day and age of "cram as much stuff into the cover as possible"?

Anyway, I really want to see this movie.
Because movie studios fell can only sell their products if their celebrities faces are marked on the cover, because believe it or not, some people will watch movies only because it has a certian actor, so they feel this film will sell more with hoffman's face on it and if it wasnt....am I making sence with this?

I must be odd man out - I thought this was utter c**p.....
Some bloke going around all the time sniffing..... I missed the point all together..... (while I was awake that is).....
My advice - give it a rent before buying. I think it's an acquired taste.....

One of my favorite films this year- and a must buy.
But these floating heads definately need to go. The original poster art was the best since The Black Dahlia so why mess with it???

I hope the R1 has audio commentaries. I do want to see the film.
i really want to see this one. But they need to get rid of those damn heads and just keep the bottom half for the artwork.
Seems like you either hate it or love it. Will give it a rental to see what side I'll fall on.
BRAD PITT - you may want to add to your list the Thai version which supposedly has the nudity blurred out.

Definitely the best film of 2006 and one of my favourites ever! One week after buying the R2 version, I've seen it 5 times! It just never gets boring. I loved it so much that I showed it to as many people as I could, and everyone thought it was excellent. Not a single complain about the ending, whether they had read the book or not.

This is one of the most laughable films of 2006. It would be my contender for the worst had I not seen Tideland.

Yann Le Leyour, can you elaborate more on the quality of the R2 disc? thanks!

I can confirm that the thai version sadly is censored by blurring out the nudity, which is a shame. I can't really explain it but it somehow feels fitting, it's done in such a subtle way. I wouldn't mind some nudity though, so i'll have to get myself another version.
Wow, people seem to really like it. Can't wait to see it.

I own the Thai DVD as well. I find the "blurring of the nudity" extremely annoying. It´s NOT what the filmmaker intended. Why are the Thai censorship so sensitive in this matter? I´ve never seen this before.

Too bad for you mate - did you hate the whole movie or just the ending? I'm curious... ;-)

Sure, it's a 2-disc edition, with an hour-long making of documentary (very good, specially when it's about shooting the controversial ending and how the crowd prepared for it - it's crazy!)
There are also 4 less interesting featurettes on bringing smells to the screen, location scouting, cinematography, and sound mixing, plus the trailer and a photo gallery. No DTS I'm afraid, just DD 5.1.... No digipack, it's a keep case.
PS: The post above was by Yann, I just changed my username to Grenouille - as I'm French, it seemed appropriate LOL!

I never read the book, but really enjoyed the movie, although the last part was kind of a letdown...

It's an amaray case, they do this one more and more often over here - I guess they're cheaper. But yes, there is a slipcase.

Floating heads... they should be considered a crime against humanity.
The coverart designer should be hanged and so do the people who approved it. For heaven's sake this is an artistic film and not "I know what You did last summer".
GRRRR...The least they could've done is used the original coverart. Why do they have to be so creative when they have absolutely no brains.
I'm going for R2, for once I dont mind BBFC stickers....And yeah how can I forget that incredible R2 "Volver" dvd!!

Great film up until the final quarter... Everything goes waaaaay downhill after that. Everything felt so rushed and convuluted it reminded me of the European "closed ending" of the Twin Peaks pilot, for the lack of better comparison.
i never saw a single advertisement for this movie. i heard about it from my uncle and wanted to see it, but naturally it wasn't playing within 100 miles. i'll give it a rent.

I had the same problem with another Thai film I own ("Invisible Waves".) I found that if one uses the angle mode on one's remote it usually allows the nudity. Try this, and let me know if this works.
