It's a bit pricy but, this is the kind of thing that, if you were going to buy it, you'd pay what they tell you to pay. I don't think kids today care about popeye. Sad as that may be. I did really enojy the farce they did on Family Guy though.
ughhh, I realize this is aimed at collectors, but seriously - Popeye isn't exactly the creme of the crop when it comes to demand. I would have thought $35 tops.
Yeah, I thought the cartoon was pretty amusing back when I was younger, but it still couldn't compete with the sheer genius of the Looney Tunes cartoons.
This set is worth three times that, easily.
Uncut Fleischer Studios episodes in chroniological order? I'll pay Tuesday for the DVD today
That is a ton of money for Popeye...my god.
This will sit on the shelf and NO ONE will buy this, they have out priced themselevs on this one, it will probably sell for $49.99
Way too much money.
Way too much money.
I might pick this one up, my nephews seemed to like the episodes they watched on TV and I really like that cover art.
If you look at the RRP of ANY DVD it's usually far more than it normally sells for.
It's worth reminding people that except for a few (very few) Fleischer cartoons in the public domain, none of these cartoons have ever been released for home viewing before. Not on DVD, not on VHS, not on laserdisc. These should not be compared with Bugs Bunny or Tom & Jerry cartoons, but with a Criterion collection. Like the Harold Lloyd boxed set (which sold for more than $90 when it first came out), this collection is going to be pricey but cheap for what you're getting: a previously unavailable but key part of our cinematic heritage. Or as Popeye would say, "Arf! Arf! Arf!"

Actually, disc-by-disc, they'll be pretty cheap. The cheapest the latest Looney Tunes 4-disc set goes for is $44, which is 15 cartoons for $11 (plus commentaries, isolated music tracks, featurettes, and documentaries). Popeye will be the same. In comparison, MGM's single-disc compilations of Pink Panther cartoons have 15-17 cartoons each for $9 to $11 with no extras at all. According to specs, there's about nine hours of Popeye cartoons total, plus five hours of supplements.

Agreed there. But Popeye would say "Ack ack ack ack!"
Say what you want about the price, I think it's a bit too early to criticize. We should wait until we know how MUCH we are going to get for our hard-earned dollars.

As I recall, he says "Arf! Arf! Arf!" in the comic strips. Just like Sandy.
I recommend for those of you wondering about this... go check out cartoon brew and the comments there. You'll see why those of us who love animation consider this release the Holy Grail of cartoons.

You could always wait a few months after the release and you will find it heaps cheaper then...
this is sooo awesome. I don't think the idiots who are saying this is overpriced realize how amazing this box set is going to be.
These are the beautiful, original "Popeye" cartoons that have languished in public domain for far too long.
Sometimes they'd show them on "Toonheads" or something, but usually not 100% uncut.
With this and the "Droopy" announcement, I am EXTREMELY happy w/ WB.

Quit b***hin. Jeeeez
That's not the point. For example, when I say I wish the SRP were lower, I say that so that I can actually buy the DVD at even lower then that.

Mark Evanier, one of the contributors to the Popeye set, discusses the price: http://www.newsfromme.com/archives/2007_04_03.h...
(By the way, I'm glad to hear that he doesn't get paid for contributing to DVDs... I thought I was the only one getting stiffed! *L* )

It'll maybe half price at Christmas... the only time I'll be able to afford it and most other four-disc sets that I want.
I think I'm reading comments from a lot of people too young or too short sided to know the significance of this collection. I have been waiting for more than ten years for king features and turner to pull their heads out and get this important work out.
Most of us Fleischer Studios enthusiasts know that their cartoons, especially Betty Boop, Superman and Popeye were some of the finest cartoons ever created, rivaling and sometimes surpassing Disney.
If you folks are thinking of Popeye as the character you might remember in color cartoons that were produced in the 50s, you don’t know the real Popeye.
The movement, the soundtracks, the storylines from there first cartoons were the best. There will be 59 Popeye cartoons in chronological order, (8 hours worth) and other special stuff. Yes, they will be asking 50.00 to 60.00 dollars, but as for me, I’ll be the first in line for my copy.
