Predator: Ultimate Edition (UK - BD RB)
If it bleeds, we can kill it. Fox will be re- releasing the Arnie film on Blu-ray Disc
Title: Predator: Ultimate Edition (IMDb)
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger
Released: 5th July 2010
SRP: £22.99
Further Details:
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Predator: Ultimate Edition for the 5th of July, priced at around £22.99. We don't yet have details of bonus material, but we do know that the film has supposedly been digitally restored for this release. Unfortunately early reports indicate that the 'restoration' constitutes grain-scrubbing and contrast boosting. Here' the artwork.

Well that's pretty close to the worst Predator cover art I've ever seen.

can we have the whole team on there! Jesse..Bill..Sonny...I hope its a good remaster
Cover worst than the US version ?
Wow, it's looks like a cheap monster movie...
As this is Fox, presumably it will also have a slip-cover with the blue swoosh across the top?
IMO this cover is better then US cover...
Early reports indicate that the German release of this title has been filtered to within an inch of its life. I suspect that it will look the same everywhere, so it looks like they really did just DNR the c**p out of it to remove the grain rather than take the time to go back to the original elements and clean up the dirt and scratches etc. Grain wasn't the problem with the original release, it was the state of the master it was derived from.
This cover has the Predator's menacing face + Arnie in the middle below with the proper blue color for BD and a good placement of title. It's perfect. What more to ask?
Do you really want the entire team to stand below the cover like some soccer pose before a match? Give it a break will ya.

Some semblance of respect for the movie itself would be a good start.

We thought that they would just DNR the f**k out of it and we were right. We hate being right so often...

Exactly! Oh dear :-(. So many early 80s films on BD are ruined by DNR.

Seriously I trust what you guys and Chris say 100% therefore my play.com preorder is cancelled,, why can't they just do a faithful and respectful remaster for christ's sake?
Here's hoping they don't do the same to Aliens.................

Well I haven't actually seen it yet. As I said above, I'm just relaying what I've heard about the German release. It could still be that this is different, even if it is highly unlikely. In short, I'll reserve final judgement until I see it, although I'm not sure if Fox will supply screeners.
Are there any links/screens for the German release?

If that sh*t happens then it is another nail in the coffin of Fox. They have been doing some lot of bad decisions in the last decade at least.

Well I've read reviews on two German BD sites (albeit translated through Google) and they don't seem to be too disparaging. I know its hard to get a full grasp of whats being said when its translated but thats the impression I got. When FOX promise a Digital Restoration it raises peoples expectations, but like Chris said I will wait until I see a comprehensive review on an English site before I decide whether to upgrade from my Dvd.
On a more trivial matter, I think this cover is better than the US one. With his mask on the Predator looks like one of the aliens from Independence Day.

There is SO much grain on Aliens that it would do serious damage to the image if they try and DNR it out. Hopefully they'll realise that it can't be done credibly and just leave it in.
We live in hope, anyway...

Fox generally don't DNR the hell out of their catalogue releases (they leave that to Universal), but this could be the anomaly. The German stuff I read made it sound like Carl Weather looked like a waxwork. Here's a review, with bits in English that talk of heavy DNR.
To be honest I probably won't upgrade anyway, not unless the image has been significantly enhanced (which doesn't appear to be the case). As I said in my original review the video on the first release was pretty good apart from all the print damage/film artefacts, and the audio was also engaging. My big gripe with that releases was the total lack of extras. For an early BD title that cost an arm and a leg it was taking the Michael.

im done with buying bare bones blu`s. six/twelve months later and a special edition pops up! ordered this for 13.99 on play in May, its now 15.99..cheeky play!
Bit more than six months. More like two and a half years for this one. If it's as badly filtered as has been suggested then the older release is the one to go for regardless of the extras.
time does fly! I sold the old version hopeing this would be better! poop

I'm sorry man (or girl?). I guess I'm just got furious that time. By that I mean toward the person who posted that the entire Arnie's special ops team members should be on the cover. Can you imagine that?

Found these captures that pretty much confirm my early suspicions. Massive failure on Fox's part...

oh yes. warners seem to care more about their back catalogue.
I wouldn't say that. Fox are actually pretty good most of the time, but Sony are the only company that routinely impresses me with their catalogue titles.

Wow. That DNR scrubbed the hair clean off Predator's balls. From this day forth DNR shall be known as DBHR. Digital Ball Hair Remover.
A bit like Immac.
I never get tired of buying Predator. My first purchase was late 80's when I spent about £60 on a VHS tape. 4x3 Nicam Stereo. This was before 'sell through' tapes and it was a brand new rental tape. Yes, £60. It's fair to say I liked Predator quite a bit back when I was 17-18. It was so precious at the time I had to 'do a back up' copy (I even had a macrovision 'bug blaster' box) it so I didn't wear the tape out or get it mangled in the video recorder. My VHS deck at the time had an annoying habit of randomly scratching tapes. I couldn't wait for laserdisc back then.
2nd purchase, a Region 1 DVD late 90's. DD5.1. Saw it 1.85 for the first time again in nearly a decade since its release.
Then bought the R2 Spec Ed, DTS on its release, when was that? Early naughties?
And now on BD. As it turns out I now can't decide whether to get this new scruubed version or as Chris suggests, the older MPEG2 release. The agony of choice. I suppose, if history is anything to go by, I should buy both. Why start being all coy with my hard earned now?

Stuff like Tango n Cash are no different to the dvd. I am hoping The Last Boy Scout/Last Man Standing are better than the dvd.
I had the vhs tape, Laserdisc, dvd, spec edition dvd...Fox owe me! I paid £40 for Predator 2 on LD in Tower Records back in the day! The most expensive was The Rock box set on LD, £90!

I would dispute that. Maybe not much better, but no better? There are only a tiny handful of titles that don't exhibit at least some improvement.
