I guess the idea of war being sick and the on-going slaughter of innocent people in the world ended at the opening titles for you?Well no offence but I did not see this film as a documentary of sorts. If you want to analyse this movie, it is wrong on so many levels. War itself is wrong, quite simply,
Well...wars may not be welcome. But it's hard to say all are wrong.
I can't see anything wrong in fighting the mass murdering genocidal scumbags in Burma.
These events are not fictional. The genocide in Burma is well documented.
I for one am glad we sent the putrid Spanish/Catholic invasion of Britain to the bottom of the sea or The Pope would be an even bigger unwelcome pain in the arse than he already is.
And the day fighting Hitler is now deemed wrong is the day I build a rocket ship and leave this putrid planet for good.
Wars are never welcome...but they are not always wrong. Actually Dave you have corrected me - I spose I was referring to the innocents that suffer and not the reasons behind a particular conflict. You have hit the nail on the head there.
I still stand behind the fact that I saw this as a popcorn movie though and nothing more - all we need is Rambo to go in and fix it!
Sorry about the delay in responding - I have been on holidays!

It's funny, Stallone said that one of the reasons Rambo 3 failed commercially was 'the poster artwork'. Hmmm.
So to ensure no such repeats, they'v gone with the 'ow me arm' artwork for Part 4. Or is he just scratching his shoulder?
I half expected at the end (trying not to spoil anything) that the door would open, his Dad would open it and it would be Connery.
"Junior! I thought I'd lost you boy".
But then I remembered Connery has retired.
Or has he?
I still think he'll turn up unannounced in Indy 4.

Bad features? Are you crazy most of the digital copies aren't compatible for Itunes. This one is. And the artwork is decent for both the single disc and two disc digital copy edition. On top of that it has audio commentary with Stallone MOST FAMOUS ACTOR AND STAR! Plus deleted scenes that were probably cut out because they were too graphic. And 6 featurettes. Now tell me that's bad!

Die Hard 4 was realesed and marketed as a summer block buster and was PG-13...
Die Hard 4 was a really fun film, and a lot more people enjoyed it thant Rambo - witness their respective box-office results.

Worth every red cent I paid to see it just for that alone.
I thought the movie was great, not to mention extremely brutal. Definitely getting this upon release. I just wish I could have the same fun watching it at home as I did that night in the theater.

They did that in your theatre too? First time I've ever chanted durring a movie. This is the film Live Free or Die Hard tried to be, but just missed.

Regardless it still wouldn't be a tough film like Rambo 4, which was point, which you knew before posting.
There was no need to be insulting though.

So I guess no extras for one disc? Bummer. So we only get the same amount of extras we would get for a one disc? Bummer. Do you finally get a digital copy that allows Itunes! Awesome. Well the extras for Rambo sound good but it's a little upsetting those features could have been used for a one disc. But it's pretty sweet we get a digital copy that works on Itunes.
Stallone talked about a Rocky Balboa Director's Cut on the commentary for that DVD but he's since said the version released is the one that should be seen so I wouldn't hold out hope for a Rambo one.
be nice to get all 4 in a tin on blu like the regular dvd.
Commentary? Won't that be unintelligible?
I was expecting a director's cut. Probably later down the road no doubt

I'll buy the the to disk one, even though I am not digging the tagline of "The Fight Continues"... sounds cheesy one an otherwise great film. I just need to find a way to squeeze it ino my metal Rambo trilogy case now.

Ah I see what you mean. The only one of the four that I dislike would be T3, which is pretty major since T2 is favorite film.
I don't accept that the character would have been catching snakes/fish and hammering on an anvil for 20 years with only an all out blow out of gun fire stopping him going back the U.S. to see what Ma or Pa Rambo is up to. The end of Rambo 3 (weak entry or not) seemed to end on a note of hope for the character as he frives off with Trautman. For us to catch up with hime 20 years down the line in a perma bad mood is just lazy writing and character development.
And, I don't think the inclusion of the radio conversations from 3 film back counts with regard to what I was saying.
Having said that Dave I respect your opinions on the subject but still hold fast with mine.

Can't agree with that at all.
"Rambo III" was the pale shadow, the weak link and the weak Rambo.
4 was actually very true to how the Rambo of 1 & 2, especially after so long alone with his head and heart full of all he had gone through. It was an excellent essay of an older, weary Rambo from the earlier films in my view.
We also had a radio scene. In fact it was THE radio scene from "First Blood" during the very nice flashback/nightmare sequence. It was great to hear that again, and to have Trautman back in somehow.
Was the score missed?? I heard a lot of it. I new version of it played over the opening credits wonderfully and appeared at the end at the very least. It was great to open the film with it in fact.
The only real weak thing in 4 is the simpering, annoyingly manipulative turn by Julie Benz.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. When I mentioned 'best sequel to come out of the 80's' I meant this decade which, unless I've missed something, started with T3, Rocky Balboa, then DH4.
I wasn't really including sequels to films like Terminator's 1&2 or Die Hard's 1-3 as they were all made broadly speaking within a few years of each other. I think the new batch of revival sequels are those separated by their last film by at least 10 years or so.
As it goes I thought T3 was a very poor addition to the Terminator series although it did have some (not many) decent action set pieces.
Rocky Balboa? A solid workmanlike afterthought of a conclusion. Some nice moments but not a classic. I don't think it will be remembered 20 years from now in the way that Rocky, Rocky 3 and 4 are. As we all know, Rocky 4 is the best Rocky film
DH4? I thought it was okay on the theatrical viewing but it was marred by the fact that I'd paid good money to watch a cut/watered down version of the film.
Rambo 4 at least had the benefit of being 'uncut' or as uncut as we'll probably ever see it. I'm sure there would have been a cut prior to the release version that had even more graphic violence in it. Bottom line with me, people being blown up even with the benifit of CGI to make it more 'realistic' (rather than the static 'dummies' used in the 80's) doesn't really do it for me anymore. I'm not in my teens anymore. Having said that, I can still enjoy First Blood, Rambo 2 and 3 but Rambo 4, while being continuation of the character, doesn't feel part of what had gone before. In its own comic book, 2 dimensional terms the Rambo of parts 2&3 the character rings true. The John Rambo of Rambo 4 is not only inconsistant with 2&3 but also First Blood depite Stallone's efforts to tack on a last minute 'homecoming coda' to proceedings.
And Jerry Goldsmith's music is sorely missed. The spirit if the original films is gone.
Yes I'll probaly buy the 1-4 boxset when it comes out and yes, I'll watch Rambo 4 when it does. But not much and not often.

Well they are both revivals of action films from the 80's, fourth entrys aswell, so I guess people naturally compare them.
Don't get me wrong IP, I did enjoy DH4.0, and more so with the Uncut version, it was interesting watching the fan edit of it too (thanks to Cervantes). I just think Rambo is truer to its roots if you like.

This film was missing some humour, (not belly laughs) and two way radio action. All the other films have Rambo in conversation with either Trautman (First Blood) or the antagonists, (Pts 2 & 3) all setting up the promise of violence and action to come. I felt Part 4 missed some of that. It just seemed to be random (endless) shooting with no real ebb and flow of a structure. I'm not saying the sequels were masterpieces of cinema, they clearly aren't but they slowed doen now and then, set up plot points and paid them off.
Given how 'straight ahead' the story telling is, why did we need to see the sequence where Rambo burns a boat (trying to avoid spoilers). I know why he did it in the film but the sequence just feels stuck in there to provide an explosion and the 'boots on blood' shot. I'm sure the sequence only ran for about 2 minutes but where it was placed in the film, I was 'clock watching'.

I only just saw this last week so it's still relatively fresh but I think weighing Rambo 4 against Die Hard 4 (as some seem intent on doing) I think DH 4 (the uncut version) still beats it.

Sad, 'defending' a film! Well some of us can write a bit more about films because unlike some others our hands aren't sc**ping along the ground as we wait for our thumbs to evolve.

Try and have a better day.You seem to be the only one with your panties in a knot about this movie.Sorry about ruining your day with my opinion of this movie.
Heck I'm American and I want to beat up a chav...that was just low.
This film is rubbish.Excuse me for having my own opinion. You make it sound like this film is as deep as a Ridley Scott or even Micheal Bay film, it ain't.Sure it tries to be but utterly fails. The climax kills anything it had going. This film is as ridiculous as all the other sequels.
You actually spent the time to defend this film(of all films).Thats really sad.
What was that? Excuse me for having an opinion? Hmm....
Sad? Sad to take time to discuss a film? Okay. I'm sad. Happy to be sad than an ape who grunts a couple of words of complete nonsense with all the plausibility of a street corner Chav. Got a mirror?
I wonder why you even went to watch the film actually. OH, I know, so you could grunt away on here.
Now that's actually very sad, as my views cost me nothing your need to see a film just to b***h about it cost you quite a wedge of cash.
Sorry if you missed what was damn good about this film. Your loss. Your money.
Sad, 'defending' a film! Well some of us can write a bit more about films because unlike some others our hands aren't sc**ping along the ground as we wait for our thumbs to evolve.
Sad someone takes the time? Shocking statement. It's what we live with now though in today's world.
I don't like this film and you are calling me an ape for it??
I don't want to discuss this film....So you take the time out of your day to insult me for it....Must be having a horrible week.
I do not appear to be up to your film writing standards..so you insult me further.Your ego needs a break, must be getting tired.
Even go so far as to call me a "Chav." Luckily I am quite cultured or I may not know what that is.I am far from being that. You must be really having a bad day to take out all your anger on me.

Anyone can comment on a film they like or don't like. But if you dislike "Rambo" for basically being 'Rambo' and then say you also disliked the other sequels with such a passion as well (especially if you disliked number 2) then I have to wonder why the hell you went anywhere near a 4th film in the series!! Just to moan in public about how you dislike anything 'Rambo' it seems.
More money than sense some people. If you're still going to see the 4th entry in a series you so dislike it's plain out strange. Give the f**king money to charity if it means that little to you.

I was hoping they would use the poster thats on my signature, the bold black and white catches the eye. I loved this film, real old school action movie, it outshines DH4.0 IMO. The dream sequence in it's really good.... YOU CAN'T JUST TURN IT OFF!!!!!!!

I saw an awesome poster for this that I wished they had used for the boxart
I'll easily pass this DVD.
joblo, bloodydisgusting and canmag (never heard of) why even bother with the quotes? Especially on the 2-disc, why don't they realize that if you are buying the 2-Disc you already like the movie? All the quotes are good for is rentals and most places only rent the one disc anyway.
The Seattle Times guy gave it 2 stars out of 4, the full sentence is:
"Rambo isn't as good as its recent companion piece, but it's shockingly entertaining in the no-nonsense degree to which director/co-writer/producer/star Stallone goes for the jugular — and rips off the whole head."

Looks like he's trying to pat himself on the back, but can't for the size of his muscles. That or the tagline should read;
"Well, that's the shoulder broken again" ahahaha

Not as deep as a Michael Bay film? WHAT? It's shot better that's for sure.
Seriously..this movie is fantastic. Those who despise it should either check their heart or their testosterone.

If the only special feature on the 2nd disc is the digital copy, then I would agree that its dumb, so hopefully they have other special features, like the way the 3rd disc is for the Collector's Edition of American Gangster. I've benefited from these "digital copies", watching movies while in class or at work on my ipod, but there are plenty of programs that allow dvd ripping in ipod format, so the digital copy really isn't a selling point to me, but given the choice between the 1 disc or 2 disc version of a dvd, I almost always go for the 2 disc, so any additional extras would be nice.

What about digital copy is dumb? For people who have PMPs that do video, it's a great way to take the flick with you if you want, without the hassle of ripping it, or downloading an "illegal screener". And it really doesn't take up much space on the disc or cost the buyer anything more at all. So now explain, again, exactly why you consider this to be dumb.

Both covers are good, but those quote are horrid! Seriously- bloodydisgusting.com??? This isn't a c-grade horror flick! They should have just used...

That said, I definately prefer the 2-disc.

So Lion Gates give up the curvy artwork on bd now...
I saw this at theatre, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure it wasn't the greatest movie of all time, but was pretty fun. I'll probably pick up the 4-Disc Blu-Ray Box in the future.

blu-ray art sucks!! omg, i'm going to have to make my own. I wanted the black & white one with the red blood.
I actually snoozed through a bit of this in the theater. Total let down. Blood and carnage doesn't make something a good film.

I think Rambo is very much a product of the time. I have fond memories of the corny over the top action flicks of the 80s but theres no need for a 21st century revival, at all.
decent artwork for both

Forget the PG-13 Transformers and Die Hard 4 (the unrated cut would be PG-13 if submitted to, probably) this is the REAL deal!
Bring on the BD with Lossless Audio!

It won't be the only thing on Disc 2 so why can't you just ignore it? For those with Portable Video MP3 Players (such as myself) they're a great idea.
The amount of extra space that it will take up on the 2 Disc DVD will be minimal.
pitdeadite wrote: But why did they name it "Rambo"?
I suspect because the others are so old for the under the 20 cinema going population and therefore they wouldn't know or care older films exist and because of that it could lose sales.
They should've called it Rambo 4 no contest or at least John Rambo (as it was originally known). Rambo is just too confusing.
Why was it rated R too? It's an NC-17 in everything but name. I'd never let a young kid see it. It's way too violent.
Typical MPAA politics no doubt. Stallone has enough say to make sure it gets an R. If someone else directed it who is less well known it would be NC-17 for sure.
The unrated version of Die Hard 4 has over 30 f-words... no it would not be rated PG-13..
And issue two with your post is that Rambo was given an NC-17 rating from the MPAA and Lionsgate appealed the rating and won the appeal -- not because of Stallone as a director, but they argued the power of the "message" would be damaged if they were forced to cut their film.

Rubbish!
It has flaws yes, but it’s not a mindless killing fest, it does have something to say (and so called activist moralists should really consider who the bad guys are here, not just in the film but in the current, real life, situations this film directly and indirectly highlights) and Stallone manages to deliver a movie both dark and bludgeoning, but also thrilling and exciting.
This was a serious return to form after the rather farcical "Rambo III" and a great finale (hopefully) for the series and character, that finally came full circle to what may have happened had it not been for that fateful meeting with a small town sheriff all those years ago.
Haters can hate away on their own.

The 2-disc artwork looks better than the one disc. But I would prefer the black and white artwork.
That 2-disc artwork is horrible! Are they trying to make him look as old as possible or what?
I like the quote "Shockingly Entertaining!". Mark Rahner was SHOCKED that this movie was the least bit entertaining.
Emo rock star Rambo pose? C'mon!
Not bad artwork, the 2-disc is a little odd with him gripping his shoulder.. And what's with the lame tagline "The fight continues" ? What happened to "Heroes don't die, they reload" ?
Artwork added...
I hope the digital copy isn't IP address locked! Meaning it will only work in North America.

Not far enough off to be idiotic really.

Loved this movie. I was like cheering. Probably the funnest time I had at the movies in like a year. Unless it's one of those digital copy-only things, I will be shelling out the extra cash for the 2-disc.
What a great comedy! I haven't laughed so hard in ages!
I'd have punched the audience in the face if they'd started chanting when I was watching it.
This was a hell of a lot of fun to watch in the theater. This was the first time I'd gone to a movie where the audience I sat with broke into a chant during one of the action scenes......."F**k'em up Rambo! F**k'em up!". lol. Worth every red cent I paid to see it just for that alone.
I thought the movie was great, not to mention extremely brutal. Definitely getting this upon release. I just wish I could have the same fun watching it at home as I did that night in the theater.
Not the most brain-busting movie ever, but defintely a solid action flick, in my opinion. Took it self a bit too seriously at times, and could've been better if it was just some younger guy as the main character, not an older Rambo, which made pretty much any scene with him and Julie Benz somewhat disturbing due to the age difference.
In any event, if you like some good and mostly senseless violence on occasion, look no further.

God this flick was SO much fun in the theaters. Might not be quite as much fun at home, but I'll probably jump for the Blu.
I have the Rambo trilogy boxset, I didn't see this but I will blind buy it. Whether I get the 2 disc or not will depend on the helping of special features.
At first, the extreme brutality (most of which, was in undeniably bad taste) turned me off to the film, but soon after I really enjoyed the film for all it's throat-ripping glory. I'll get the 2-disc if the features are solid enough.
Will buy for sure!
superb movie, will definatley purchase this!
Such a brutal film, yet sooo entertaining. I hope they release a definitive collection and not fart around like the Rocky sets.
Loved it!
Got to be the Blu Ray version. DTS HD and 5.1 EX sound will sound AWESOME! Looking forward to this...;-)
This was actually better than Die Hard (4)
blu-ray for the win!

hope there's a complete box set after this one. if the 2nd disc only contains the "digital copy", then ill pass
and the announcement for the "complete saga" box set should hit soon.
Enjoyed the hell out of this one. 2 disc for me.
I loved this! Definately picking up the 2 disc edition.
I'm not a big fan of the Rambo films. I'll pass.
