Umm...what? Good original flicks have been tainted by useless direct-to-DVD films, but I thought perhaps Donnie Darko would've been spared from that.
I will give them credit, though, for using the same actress to play his little sister. Maybe this could be good after all? Has anyone heard anything?

hated the original, won't be watching the sequel.
the trailer is bad for this one (this is coming from someone who liked the first film (Donnie Darko) until the ending ruined it for me entirely, but I did love Southland Tales)
I might rent this, just to see it. Not expecting much since Richard Kelly didn't even approve it. The first one's still a great movie, even after all the Hot Topic-emo kid hype pretty much killed it for most people.
i love the cover...and not just because daveigh's grown into a hot little thing.

just realized though, the first took place in 1988. so assuming daveigh is playing her true age, then this one should be in 1998-ish...wonder if they'll use late 90s alt rock for the soundtrack.

Never saw the original but since the direct to dvd sequel is upon us, it makes me fear a lot... After all, what else can they tell that will be considered new? Three words: Butterfly Effect 2!

Richard Kelly is trying to prove that "Donnie Darko" was a fluke. "Southland Tales" has to be one of the worst movies of the last ten years, and "Knowing" with Nicholas Cage doesn't look much better. Now he's whoring out his one success.

This will never live up to the original...My only hope is that it is decent enough that it doesn't tarnish the original cult classic.

He has fought tooth and nail since this project was announced to get it stopped.

I'm usually okay with needless sequels, but not this time. I'm betting this'll be as bad as American Psycho II, worse even.

You are wrong, Proyas got the first draft of Knowing years ago, anyone who has read his interviews about the film knows this, also the first draft he recieved has been considerably re-written to exclude the paranormal and include a more scientific approach.
Hope this clears up the Knowing confusion.

Agreed regarding Southland Tales, it was amazing and undoubtly a very misunderstood masterpiece. Donnie Darko was excellent, as for this one, I'll pass judgement when I've actually seen it. Not sure how ANYONE on this board can pass an informed judgement on S. Darko when it's not even out until the end of April!
S Darko was announced as straight-to-DVD ages ago, then changed to cinema, then returned to s-t-DVD.
Donnie Darko was low budget too and only looked more expensive because Kelly was able to call in a lot of favours. Kelly also hasn't done much else that I;ve been wild about so it's not like this film will be The Birds II!
I'll give S Darko a shot. It doesn't deserve derision when no one's seen it.
I wish people would lose their snobbery about straight to DVD in the West. Then again, I wish studios would use it as a testing/training ground for up-and-comers, rather than just a cheap sequel conveyor belt for second-raters!

I HATED DONNIE DARKO!!! Let the bashing on me begin. I guess I just wasn't "smart enough" or "sophisticated" enough to understand such a "complex" movie.
Cult classics should stay cult classics (i.e. 28 Days Later). I don't know if I'll refuse to watch this, but I can't see why this was made.
He also wrote an script for Holes, didn't mean he was responsible for the final film.
The Box's release date has just been set for thanksgiving weekend and I doubt if it was s**te it would be released at such a peak time. I hope it does well for him considering he has never had a cinematic hit before. He's very young and very talented.
Have any of you guys seen the alternative cut of Southland? It was show on Sky in the UK and across Europe. It has less visual effects, the election storyline is all but dropped, the narration actually does what it is supposed to and the story is explained much better with the few minute extras scenes added.
Seems to me that if people had a little more faith in the guy and released his cuts without tampering with them like they did with both films, we'd all be better off. The Sundance cut of Darko was far superior to the original and the Directors Cut.

Kelly didn't "write" 'Knowing'. He was one of seven writers hired to save what looks like one of those terrible M Night Shyamalan so-called thrillers.
