I like how they stick all of these cast member names on the front as if we actually know who any of these people are. I know they're trying to emulate the original film's layout, but Noah Wyle, Patrick Swayze, & Drew Barrymore these people ain't.

Atleast the box art is decent.
Dont forget DOMINO
I scratch my head wondering-How many possible favors could a not yet into Hollywood kid have at 26 to call in? But he made the whole movie with them-and volunteer actors ive heard
I had heard that everyone read the script and with pleading , agreed-because they thought a good film (or tax shelter)
He got primo actors, the DP called in some hi-Q film stock and everyone on down gave. The film looks expensive-the CGI is pretty good. The original version I did not like for lots of little reasons-editorial, foley and enhancement;
The biggest boffo in that cut was when the soul stream or what ever turns around and motions with a finger to follow. He got a better editor or advisor
The additions raise more questions than they answer-very symbolic or oblique references to historical metaphysical stuff; The good bye in Dr Thurmonds office was confusing to a first timer. We will assume Kelly is Catholic, and that she was a school associated counselor-other wise she was going beyond professional code of conduct.. The 'corrected' time reversal was a mess-both too obvious-and a jumble at the same time-it was not made clear that Donnie still felt alienated-which is why he looked forward to dying; Frank s words in the theater-as he nods at Gretchen-"Im sorry" was missed. I loved the sound of the deep thunder before the logos even started; What amazes me is that he remastered, cleaned up and recut this in just 9 days-and even moe that a guy 25-26 could have written and directed such a film!
This might have been his one gift to the film world-everything else after has to pass the test of DD
And how did Grandma death know 50 years prior to write a book of the coming event-and why she went to her mailbox each day-looking for Donnies coming letter...
And what is Donnie smiling at as he opens his parents closet and looks straight ahead- as he gets the gun?

i'm honestly surprised to see so many people defending "southland tales." i only saw it the once, but goddamn i thought it was awful. maybe i'll see it again sometime, but as of now i have no desire to sit through it again.
Pass...
I'll totally give S. Darko a shot, but I'm not sure why, because I thought Donnie Darko was one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. Call me stupid, but I don't want to have to go get a physics degree in order to understand a movie.
Street date changed from the 28th April to the 12th May. Final specs and artwork also added
but it looks more like a cash in than a seperate film....
Kelly didn't "write" 'Knowing'. He was one of seven writers hired to save what looks like one of those terrible M Night Shyamalan so-called thrillers.
liono86 you "hate" 'Donnie Darko' because you wouldn't know a brillant film if it fell out of a plane and crashed through your bedroom.

He also wrote an script for Holes, didn't mean he was responsible for the final film.
The Box's release date has just been set for thanksgiving weekend and I doubt if it was s**te it would be released at such a peak time. I hope it does well for him considering he has never had a cinematic hit before. He's very young and very talented.
Have any of you guys seen the alternative cut of Southland? It was show on Sky in the UK and across Europe. It has less visual effects, the election storyline is all but dropped, the narration actually does what it is supposed to and the story is explained much better with the few minute extras scenes added.
Seems to me that if people had a little more faith in the guy and released his cuts without tampering with them like they did with both films, we'd all be better off. The Sundance cut of Darko was far superior to the original and the Directors Cut.

Cult classics should stay cult classics (i.e. 28 Days Later). I don't know if I'll refuse to watch this, but I can't see why this was made.
I HATED DONNIE DARKO!!! Let the bashing on me begin. I guess I just wasn't "smart enough" or "sophisticated" enough to understand such a "complex" movie.
S Darko was announced as straight-to-DVD ages ago, then changed to cinema, then returned to s-t-DVD.
Donnie Darko was low budget too and only looked more expensive because Kelly was able to call in a lot of favours. Kelly also hasn't done much else that I;ve been wild about so it's not like this film will be The Birds II!
I'll give S Darko a shot. It doesn't deserve derision when no one's seen it.
I wish people would lose their snobbery about straight to DVD in the West. Then again, I wish studios would use it as a testing/training ground for up-and-comers, rather than just a cheap sequel conveyor belt for second-raters!

Agreed regarding Southland Tales, it was amazing and undoubtly a very misunderstood masterpiece. Donnie Darko was excellent, as for this one, I'll pass judgement when I've actually seen it. Not sure how ANYONE on this board can pass an informed judgement on S. Darko when it's not even out until the end of April!

I think he was even supposed to direct it from the beginning. Might be wrong there...
You are wrong, Proyas got the first draft of Knowing years ago, anyone who has read his interviews about the film knows this, also the first draft he recieved has been considerably re-written to exclude the paranormal and include a more scientific approach.
Hope this clears up the Knowing confusion.

Yeah Kelly wrote "Knowing", not directed.
I`ll keep open mind and watch it.
I loved Southland Tales. This one looks TERRIBLE though..

Knowing is from director Alex Proyas, the director fo The Crow and I, Robot.Don't forget DARK CITY, his masterpiece (and one of the best Sci-Fi films of all time for that matter).
And Garage Days, which I enjoyed. I really hope this doesn't suck. This and Butterfly Effect are 2 decent movies I just don't think ever needed sequels, they just work better on their own. Not EVERY single movie needs a sequel...

You should check your references before bashing. And Southland Tales was amazing.

I'm usually okay with needless sequels, but not this time. I'm betting this'll be as bad as American Psycho II, worse even.

Southland Tales was a messy masterpiece.
Knowing has nothing to do with him. The Box is his next film.
He has fought tooth and nail since this project was announced to get it stopped.
So really you've just made yourself look like a complete cock by trying to be smart when you so obviously aren't!
As for the film it is obviously c**p as it was filmed as a cinema flick and it is going directly to dvd. I will rent it out of interest, nothing will taint the original for me.

This will never live up to the original...My only hope is that it is decent enough that it doesn't tarnish the original cult classic.

maybe I will watch it, I know I will hate it.
Never saw the original but since the direct to dvd sequel is upon us, it makes me fear a lot... After all, what else can they tell that will be considered new? Three words: Butterfly Effect 2!
cover art is fantastic
i love the cover...and not just because daveigh's grown into a hot little thing.
but yeah, i'll give it a rent and see but i dont hold out hope. i mean aside from her, whats the connection? does frank somehow show up to help her save the world too? the description just makes it sound like some weird things happen, and it just happens to involve someone from the first movie.
just realized though, the first took place in 1988. so assuming daveigh is playing her true age, then this one should be in 1998-ish...wonder if they'll use late 90s alt rock for the soundtrack.

I might rent this, just to see it. Not expecting much since Richard Kelly didn't even approve it. The first one's still a great movie, even after all the Hot Topic-emo kid hype pretty much killed it for most people.
the trailer is bad for this one (this is coming from someone who liked the first film (Donnie Darko) until the ending ruined it for me entirely, but I did love Southland Tales)
hated the original, won't be watching the sequel.
Umm...what? Good original flicks have been tainted by useless direct-to-DVD films, but I thought perhaps Donnie Darko would've been spared from that.
I will give them credit, though, for using the same actress to play his little sister. Maybe this could be good after all? Has anyone heard anything?
