Can't wait to see it
I am sorry to say I've never watched the show or caught the movie - in spite of being a huge Joss Whedon fan (Buffy is one of my all time favorite shows) so I'll be checking this out, along with the series!

Excellent, excellent movie. It's a shame it underperformed at the box office, it's a real gem of a flick. Hopefully if the DVD gets strong sales and rental receipts, Universal will greenlight a sequel...

I hope we get a screener copy so I can write an honest review. It seems every non-glowing review on the web gets the Browncoats all riled up. You ain't no one on the web untill the Browncoats are cursing your name.
That said I love the series and film, but felt the film wasn't really much of a stand alone peice. (Braces for backlash)I honestly liked Revenge of the Sith better, for various reasons.

I thought the film worked well enough as a standalone. Obviously you're going to get more out of it if you're a Firefly fan, but it did a nice enough job of establishing its main characters (Mal and River), its villain (The Operative), and a pretty standalone plot that doesn't rely too heavily on established canon.

I agree that the plot worked fine standalone, I just feel that if I hadn't invested myself in several episodes with these characters, their plight in the film wouldn't have affected me nearly as much
Spoiler Wash's death made me choke up, but I don't think I would've cared nearly as much if I hadn't seen the series

Really liked Serenity but two things still bug me about the movie:
1) Spoiler here folks...Spoiler Why is it that Joss Whedon's main weapon in trying to create some drama is killing characters either unnecessarily or for shock value, something he did frequently in Buffy and Angel as well? The first major death I was fine with and it actually was integral to the plot, but the second major death in the film had no meaning and was there for shock value and a few tugs of the heart strings alone. 2. Couldn't Whedon have come up with something we hadn't seen before with the Reavers? I had bad flashbacks of seeing John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars and nearly walked out like I did with that movie, then I remembered I was watching a different, good flick and sat back down.
Can't win'em all I guess, but I'll definitely be adding this disc to the big shelf right next to the series when it gets released.

i'm glad its coming out so soon, wish it would been a much bigger hit but as i said months before it came, as long as it was a good movie who cares how much or little money it made...and i loved it so in the end it doesnt matter much....if sequels do come then bring it on but if not, this was a nice way to end things, an actual finale...
i'm glad there's a Joss commentary, i'm not a commentary person at all but one day i decided to listen to Joss's for the first Buffy episode and he was great and funny and so i ended up listening to all the Buffy and Angel ones and eventually listend to all my tv shows on dvds but i've never listened to a movie commentary, so this will be my first one..lol
anyway i sorta wish there were more special features, but maybe if this sells well they will double dip, as evil as that is i'd be more than willing to buy this one twice..lol
can't wait to see what the cover art is, the movie poster or something new?

I love Serenity
I can't wait! I hope it will be a hit, so we'll get the sequels.
To Matt Joseph. SPOILERS Spoiler I'm sure we will see Wash's death consequences in the sequel. So, It's not just a shocking death for me. Wait, It was very shocking, don't ge me wrong :p

OK, so who here thinks Universal was downright retarded for releasing this in October and Land of the Dead in June. If they would've switch the two they might've have a damn chance at the box office, instead, two fine films were detroyed at the box office.
On that note, how many non-film geeks do you know that are even aware that a King Kong remake is coming out in a little over a month. When I'm rich and famous remind me to stay far away from Universal.

Just wait, Gabe...the blitz will begin right after all of the Harry Potter build up winds down with Burger King, Nestle, Kellogg, Volkswagen, Toshiba, and New York City all promoting the film. I'm sure a lot of folks have seen the Volkswagen commercial already, and this weekend I noticed Kong gracing the front of the box of Corn Flakes that I picked up at the grocery.

I've tried several times to get into this series, but I just can't. The western motiff just puts me off in a big way. The thing is that I'm a huge sci-fi fan, but this series and movie just irks me something aweful.
I was hoping this series dies with this movie as it should, IMO. What's interesting is, that the only Joss Whedon work that I like is Alien Resurrection, which is normally and usually panned by most people.

oooo the art is nice....looks sorta video game-ish but i like it..its pretty and really sticks out...at the very least it should grab people's attention at video stores so maybe that'll help sequels

I hate the cover art. I expected the theatrical art to be the DVD cover. This cover makes Summer Glau look like the poor man's version of Milla Jovovich, and while she is a key player in the film - she is NOT the star of the film. Still getting this though.

Aye, nae too keen on the artwork myself. I can't remember River looking like that in the film. Felt the UK poster would've sufficed, which we can hopefully see for the Region 2 release.
I adore this film as I'm a huge fan of the series.

I plan on buying this the day it comes out becuase I already know it's good... but as someone who hasn't seen it, I would definitley skip past this one on a DVD shelf... the artwork is so dull and disappointing, and the colors clash. They should just give up on it and start with a new one like Universal did on "Land of the Dead."

Great!
I went into this film very clueless and came out and ran to buy the series. This is a fantastic sci-fi film and so is the series. Even though it underperformed at the BO it recieved great reviews so it would be in Universal's interest to greenlight another and release it at a time when it will perform better as well. The dvd features sound really good and I really like the coverart. Can't wait for this one!
