just bought on dvd and then found out its being released on blu-ray on the 30th december this year .with even more extras
Liked the movie the first time I saw it (rented it a while back), but now that I'm halfway through Firefly, I'm definitely gonna pick this up. Nice timing with the whole SE re-release. Just too bad it's not being released on Blu-Ray.
I really dig the art and the menus. The original always escaped me, so this is a no brainer, must buy. Funny, I never saw the show until after the movie and now I can truly appreciate the genius of this franchise.
Oh well, I was actually diggin drive as wel, guess Fox has it in for Fillion.

ive got this already, not sure if ill go for it again unless it has much better PQ, although the one i have is pretty good.
So the menus are the same as the last release...
Dang, guess I'll have to pick this up. Firefly/Serenity is my favorite series.

well joss whedon himself says there isnt one, this is the final and only version as far as he's concerned....of course that doesnt mean universal couldnt one day put one together using deleted/removed footage but yeah...oh and whats with the menus? they're exactly like the previous edition, they went through the trouble of making new cover art why not go the extra mile? lol

I was hoping they would give us some new menus. Those look like the ones from the first release. Either way, I'm still buying it.

I'm tempted to upgrade, but I'll wait until it's cheaper. The new extras don't sound so fantastic.
If you have a high end system, then it will be easy to spot the difference between the DTS and DD tracks.
Do Want.
One the best sound demo's for DTS versus DD is Open Range. one of the best if not the best DTS track out there. a nod does go to titanic, saving private ryan, and LOTR: return of the king. That last gun battle is absolutely incredible, if your set up can handle it, but watch out or the cops may show up after its over.
Ray Waterway wrote: DTS, to me at least, is a whole lot more nuanced and spatial. Compare and contrast the DD and DTS tracks on "Chicago" and the extended edition of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King". On "Chicago"'s DTS track, even the opening song sounds less jumbled, with clearer representations of the various instruments. Also, effects and reverbs sound a lot more open and well-placed. The DD track just sounds kinda... there. And if you want to hear differences between night and day, take the scene from the battle of Minas Tirith, where the Witch-King is whirling his mace around. When his weapon hits the ground, the DD track just kinda thumps, and then it's done. The DTS track makes you FEEL the impact of the weapon; it's very punchy and tight.
I've got more favorite DTS tracks, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. More later...
LOTR EE trilogy for sure, those DTS tracks rock! Also here in R2 land we got the Saving Private Ryan D-Day 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition with DTS, which is reference quality. And the Titanic SE DTS track sounds cracking.

better cover art than the one disc, but I'm still a little underwhelmed. The extras have me wanting to have it.
Why does everyone praise the Dolby track on Star Wars ROTS, its not that great. I thought there were missing sound effects, some scenes lacked bass like the ship crash landing and its not my settings as other movies bring the house down, for example the DTS on event horizon.
I can hear a discernable difference a majority of the time between DTS and DD, but i have higher end speakers and that makes a big difference.

In my experience, DTS is louder and more dynamic than DD. I actually don't know if I prefer it, because sometimes it's TOO dynamic, and hurts my ears.
The artwork...I don't like it. I will still be buying it, though.

That's some GREAT cover art! Universal has been getting pretty bad with their DVD artwork, but this is a definite exception to their recent track record. Superb!

Digital Theater Systems. Its digital surround. Far more superior than Dolby. I guess its the trend now to hold off on DTS for the opportunity of a double-dip. Ahh well, i'll be buying this.
superior = louder (in this case)
Also not true. In fact, in most cases Dolby Digital tracks tend to have a higher output volume than DTS (I don't know why). But volume has nothing to do with the sound quality.
What makes the difference is the higher bitrate DTS has, or less compression. Dolby Digital 5.1 is either 384 kb/s or 448 kb/s on most feature film dvd's. DTS is usually 754 kb/s (some titles are 1509 kb/s DTS, but these are rare, as the sound takes up much discspace). So, DTS has a significantly higher bitrate, which means in most cases better fidelity. The lower end of the soundspectrum is better controlled and sounds tighter than DD and you get a more detailed audio presentation in the mids and highs. DTS is a step up the sound ladder in your home cinema experience. And now we have even much less or even no compression at all on the hi-def discs. You'll get a movie soundtrack, just as the sound designers and mixers have intended it. Just Google a bit and you will find interesting articles about this subject matter.

I must say, that cover art is pretty good (the custom artwork some fans devised is still much better) and some of the R1 exclusive extras are mighty tempting.

I agree that DTS is technically superior and often is audibly so, but using the term FAR superior is stretching it a bit. Listen to the ROTS Dolby track and tell me that it isn't extraordinary.

Brilliant! Must buy!
This movie rocks and so did what little of the original series they made. I can't beleive something this good never really caught on. Curse you fickle audience!
Jeez, people whinge about wanting better artwork, get it and STILL whinge about it. I will buy this even though I have the R4 tin,(which I won't be getting rid off), as I want the commentaries and Dts track. Support this movie, and hopefully we'll get a sequel.

I think the art cover could have been a little bit better. But overall the DVD sounds nice.
Can someone please tell me what DTS stands for? Thank you ever so.
that art work ROCKS!!!! I was going to double dip anyway, so this just a bonus. I will also buy the HD-DVD version when I get a universal player, so I guess I will triple dip on this one...making it the first movie I've ever done that on.
It would be bad@$$ if Universal released this in Steelbook a la Dune: Extended Edition!
ooo i like that cover....while i agree it woulda been cool to have the whole cast, it does make sense since river and mal are pretty much the stars of this as far as story and screentime are concerned, especially to people who dont know the show or anything...so it fits
at least Serenity herself isnt a half inch image this time..lol

That cover artwork is not even decent.
Another "floating heads" weak effort that looks like it was done by some intern. That, or studios nowadays are pretty fond of that "bootleg" feel.

Me too.
Me too.
I love that artwork. The only way the package could improve is if the case was a digipack case.
I hope Universal revises that art. It's decent, but not Double-Dip worthy. I prefer the original art.
And like all Universal Collector's editions, this one probably will be limited for a period of time. Does "Jarhead", "Munich" and "United 93" all ring a bell? They are all OOP.
Sort of strange artwork, but I like it.
I agree. Love the new artwork but River is so pretty and that picture of her does not convey that. I know they can find a better picture of her to use. Only complaint there. And yes, the DTS does it for my double dip. They got me this time.
I really really like the coverart. Not what I was expecting, but I am quite impressed with how different it is. The only thing I don't like so much is that picture of River.
At least River actually looks like River this time.
WOW. I LOVE that artwork. I wish it had more of the crew, but the simplicity of it and the subdued color palate is excellent. Cannot wait for this one.
Artwork added...
Could have picked up the 2 disc R4 for about $A6 recently (B&M store JB Hifi had a twin pack with Doom for $12.95).
Gee..... put DTS on a disc these days - and some people go off !!! The R4 2 disc version is enough for me - I've got 'decades' of special features unwatched here already.

The only way i'll double dip is maybe for the HD version. I loved the movie but I am getting real sick of these triple, quadruple, etc dips....

Seems pretty packed, although the lack of the theatrical trailer and the R1-exclusive extra is the cast audio commentary makes me wish we got much more. I hope the DVD art is good.
I imported the region 4 tinned edition and I can't even say that a DTS soundtrack is necessarily going to make me double dip. I think the second audio commentary will add a little value to the set because Joss Whedon's original one is a pretty dull technical commentary.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but only that second commentary , session 416 and sci-fi inside: Serenity are the only new features for those with the region 4 edition.
I think it's a terrible shame they haven't included the terrific 55 minute Joss Whedon Q & A which was by far my favourite extra.

You should be pleased to hear that Joss Whedon is no longer attached as director to wonder woman!

I loved the fact that trailers were often included on the DVDs. You could see and hear snippets of deleted scenes and dialogue, and more often than not, the editing of these trailers is quite good. Somewhere along the way, I think people started getting worried about music clearance rights (a lot of these trailers use pop songs and the like) and eventually, more and more DVDs will not be including trailers. But Universal has been doing away with trailers for a long time now. I really liked the "Serenity" trailers... DAMN!

while i totally agree sometimes you do get screwed...lol i recall a couple of years ago i bought The Crow...then i come home having just bought it and surf online and find out about the 3 movies box set they eventually made containing a 2 disc version of that movie....so yeah sometimes waiting is good..lol..there are a few movies i havent bought and often see for 15$ or less but i'm afraid that if i buy em, i'll find out soon after that a better special edition is coming soon....

but yeah, DVDs are a sneaky business...especially for those like me who live for special editions and extras...lol

There should be a comment box on such surveys to stress that the trailers should be included if there is room on the DVD (which there almost always is).

If the DTS is full-rate (which I doubt it will be) it will effectively be giving us the same audio experience the HD-DVD has, that has DD Plus but nothing more. Assuming Universal used 1.5Mbps DD Plus for Serenity which I suspect they did.

I watched the outtakes on my 1-disc DVD the other and I was cracking up. I will be buying this double dip.
If the disc is loaded with features, I may have to upgrade from the original release.
I have the original release but it only cost me 10 dollars so I may consider buying this. It is one of my favorite movies ever.

I want the SE. I love this film.
DTS?! You said the magic word!
This will hopefully be besides my Firefly boxset (which by the way, I haven't even opened)...
Reasons why I'm going to buy this:
One: Joss Whedon is the most over-creative, under-appreciated artist in today's entertainment industry. He deserves the kudos of huge home-video sales.
Two(and this one's linked): the more we buy, the more Universal make, and the more chance of a sequel film/ series. (Yes, I'm clinging to a nanometer-wide thread here, but think positive!)
Three: DTS. I'm picky, and I likes me some higher-bitrate sound (the current releases are 386kbps Dolby, and that's good but not great)
Four: Commentray. If the Firefly commentaries are anything to go by, this one will be a hoot.
Five: The Tam Sessions web vids. They make that freaky kid from The Ring seem like a well-adjusted nun-to-be.
Six: Extras. Any new Serenityness draws me like a moth to a flame. A warm, cuddly and oh-so-comforting flame.
I already have the Region 2 Special 2 Disc Edition. "No such thing," you say! "Check for the German release. Yup," I reply with a smug glee:D But this one's a keeper. Hell, I'd be tempted to buy the HD-DVD version just for future, but I reckon an upscaling player moots that one.
Ta-ta.

Ta-ta.
Sa-weet. I'm there.
"Goin' on a year now I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries!"
"Oh, GOD! I can't be hearin that!"
Too funny.

DTS for "Serenity"? Enough said. i NEED this. This will be a triple-dip for me - we've got the R1, the R4 tin (also got it signed by Alan Tudyk when he was on Broadway in March) and now this... And I'll gladly shell out for Joss Whedon-y goodness.
Yes, I'm one of *those* people.

Fantastic film! I just hope the special features are well done and the artwork is good.
This will probably be my first double dip if this edition is good.
I'll pick it up even though I have the original 1 disc version.
Of the UK R2, R4 and R1. The R1 is currently lacking the most, the UK R2 and R1 are about the same but the UK R2 got a wee bit more extras. Some of those R4 extras recording in Australia so personally I suspect they'll stay Aussie exclusive. Just a hunch though.
This re-release looks nice but I'd wait and get the HD-DVD now (European version, it's been tweaked to look even better than the R1).

It will be on the DVD, Joss said it himself.

I will be picking this up.
Consider me sold! Such a tragically under rated (and under performing) movie. It's gonna have to sell a lot of copies though to prompt a sequel from the studio. Despite big DVD sales and a huge cult following, it just didn't cross over to the masses.

Whedon did say that a special edition was coming forthwith on whedonesque, and that the DVD will feature a cast commentary (depending on how many who come), the short film "The Tam Sessions" and brand-new custom DVD artwork. There will be other extras, whether will most of them be ported over from the R2 release has yet to be determined.
I own the HD-DVD Version of this movie....I love it.
I'll pick this up even if they only change the cover art. If it sells well enough, you never know, it might get a sequel. Be it direct to DVD or a made for TV movie. I don't care HOW we get more Serenity/Firefly, just give it to me!!

Great! I'll pick this up just for the DTS track.
What? NO!
Universal, if this is just about double-dipping on your title for no good reason (such as not promoting a sequel), then shame on you!
The 2005 release was excellent -- good transfer and all the extras were good. However, if the DVD art was better and it included more commentaries and such, I might get it when it's cheap.

Wow, DTS. Universal hasn't done a DTS track in awhile, on standard DVD that is. I remember when almost every release either had a DTS track or a seperate version with a DTS track and just less bonus features.
Might finally get this, have seen the film but never got around to buying the DVD.
If it's got enough extra minutes, I'll pick it up. Just a bunch of extra features wouldn't be enough for me. Unless of course there's a documentary on how they're bringing it back to TV.
nice. I really liked this flick but kept myself from getting the DVD, knowing a doubledip would come eventually since other regions were getting special editions and we weren't
Uch... I've already got the R4
Let's hope this jam-packed with extras.
