Sideways (US - DVD R1)
We have some early details on the recent Paul Giamatti movie
Title: Sideways
Starring: Paul Giamatti
Released: 5th April 2005
SRP: $27.95
Early details have begun to emerge on the region one release of Sideways which stars the likes of Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh and Marylouise Burke. The disc will be available to own from the 5th April this year, and should set you back around $27.95. I'm afraid Fox has yet to reveal the full disc specs for this one, although we can confirm that the film will be available in seperate anamorphic widescreen and full screen editions. Each will carry an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track, an audio commentary with Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, some 'hilarious deleted scenes' and much more. We'll bring you some further details, just as soon as we get them. Stay tuned.

I loved the movie, I'll definately be Buying this.
So are they gonna edit for "Winner Of An Academy Award?"
Looks better than The Aviator, which was still pretty good.
Overrated for 2004 = National Treasure
personally
personally i loved this flick.
the trailers did less than nothing for me. seeing a film about a miserable wine snob wasnt exactly something on the top of my list. but liking giamatti as much as i do i had to see it. its an incredibly well acted and written story with real and believeable characters everyone involved did a hell of a job.
bitching about the oscars seems completely ridiculous unless you have yet to be made aware these awards are nothing more than a 4 hour circle jerk. the notion of "the best film of the year", something completely subjective anyhow, winning is laughable. these are all social cliques handing out statues to their friends and colleagues. lets not make it out to be anything else here.
if films like sideways win oscars this is good for the independant community. while this community has gotten significantly watered down as of late. its pretty much our only hope for worthwhile realistic human stories to get made.
are you aware of the story behind this film? if you cant get behind and cheer this guy on, you're pretty much a sack of shit.

did you honestly think The Passion or F9/11 would win anything? both were very well made entirely too polarizing films. the politics involved wouldnt allow for it.

Why do they feel they have to airbrush it like that? It's creepy. They are not supposed to be in their 20s!
I like the disc art, though I find it ironic Fox is releasing a separate full-screen edition. I saw Alexander Payne a few weeks ago, and he went off on a rant about how terrible full-screen is.

DON'T TRUST THE OPINON OF PEOPLE WHO SEE MOVIES FOR FREE. Movie critics always get excited when an independent film turns out to be relatively mainstream and worth watching. This is the only reason "Sideways" even got noticed. It's an insult that the academy nominated this film for best picture and virtually ignored better directed, better acted, better written, films such as Eternal Sunshine, The Passion and Fahrenheit 911.
Funny -- I've seen Sideways twice and paid for it both times. Does my opinion count?
And neither Passion or Fahrenheit should be considered. One is pure propaganda, and the other is a snuff film.

I quite like the cover. Even though the actors have been airbrushed. Paul Giamatti is especially creepy.
Great film, and I like the lower half of the DVD artwork, but what is with their faces? Paul Giamatti has some creepy Kiriyama from Battle Royale smile going on. He looks like he's about to kill somebody.
Other than that, I really like the lower half, with the bottle and everything. Such a good movie.

Mixed opinion on that artwork.

Exactly. The day after the awards they'll update the artwork like COLD MOUNTAIN did. At least the the award banner is tasteful, the one in CM was just plain ugly.

That's a great box art.

Yes!!!
Truly one of the best films of 2004. Funny and touching. Here's hoping It'll win best picture at the oscars but that's just wishfull thinking. I'm getting my copy.
really overhyped
i think it was an overrated film. its good, but its not awesome. there are some very very funny parts in it, but it kinda moves slow in some parts. Out of 10 I would give it an 8.5 . I will own this one. Oh yea, I'm 17 years old, so that's my opinion.
Very tough year for the Oscars. I think this film will get overshadowed by "The Aviator" and "Million Dollar Baby". But I loved all three equally. Still fuming though Paul Giamatti was overlooked. He was the heart and soul of the movie. Alexander Payne is the best screenwriter in America today. His work just keeps getting better. He should win for writing.

Thats yor opinion. I think the Aviator is the one that should win as for best director and best actor. Cate also did a marvelous job

I'm looking forward to see this movie and it owuld be nice if it came out sooner, closer to the Oscars but what can ya do?
I don't know if it can take over my spot as best film of the year... a movie I loved although it wasn't nominated for an Oscar for best picture.
It wasn't totally shut out though.

you can have all the technical brilliance in the world...

Miles better than Scorsese's bloated Oscar bait. Can't wait to own it. I'll be curious to see if they use the same transfer they used on the Academy screener.
Bloated Oscar bait? Hardly. I don't know how anyone could watch "The Aviator and not appreciate the tremendous film-making achievement it represents... it was an incredibly artful and well-executed production in so many ways. I was entertained by "Sideways," but you must admit the critics love this type of film. They heap tons of praise upon these "little" gems and criticize those who don't appreciate them. It is simply intellectual snobbery at work. It reminds me of the critical hype "My Dinner with Andre" received a number of years ago. My God, that was tedious to watch. Anyone remember that critical darling? I believe "The Aviator" will be remembered long after "Sideways" has disappeared into the discount bin at Walmart.

The Aviator was a great film, but this probably still is my favorite film of the year. I never did like Clint Eastwood, but I still think I should give Million Dollar Baby another chance.
I might check this out next week (But not if Phantom Of The Opera sticks around). Looks alright.
I really hope the Aviator wins best picture and best director and best actor, Dicaprio did a fenomenal job playing the exentric Mr. Hughes. Much better then Jamie Foxx as Ray.
this movie looks great. Missed it in theaters. Cant wait to rent it.

I'll evenutually see it when I buy it for $6.99 at Blockbuster. I originally thought this was the most overrated film of 2004 but now, I'm just going with the flow.
Not too crazy to see it but hope it does well at the Oscars.
You thought it was the most overrated movie without seeing it? That doesn't even make any sense.
This is the best film of 2004 and speaking of Oscars, it angers me to know end that Clint Eastwood nabbed a best actor nod over Giamatti. Typical Academy. Clint Eastwood could have directed "Alone in the Dark" and it would get nominated for 8 awards.
Also nice to be posting under another fellow Doom fan.

Million Dollar Baby is my pick for best movie of the year. Although The Aviator is gonna win.

I won't be picking this one up. I also think that it's very overrated. The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby were much better than this but the critics seem to be in love with Sideways, so we'll see how it does at the Oscars.
The best film of last year

Ecellent film. I had no idea what I was going into when I saw it, but I'm glad I did.
Excellent, I've been checking this site almost every day waiting for this announcement. This was a pleasant suprise last year and turned out to be one of my favorites. Certainly when a film gathers this much critical attention its always going to be called "overrated," much like Lost In Translation. Give it a chance though.
