Fox/MGM Home Entertainment has sent over artwork for a new collector's edition
Title: Silence of the Lambs (IMDb)
Starring: Anthony Hopkins
Released: 30th January 2007
SRP: $26.98
Further Details:
Fox/MGM Home Entertainment has announced a two-disc collector's edition of Silence of the Lambs which stars Anthony Hopkins, and Jodie Foster. The set will be available to own from the 30th January, and should be priced at around $26.98. Extra material will include an Inside the Labyrinth making of documentary, a two part 'Page to Screen' documentary, a Jonathan Demme and Jodie Foster three-part documentary (The Beginning, Making The Silence of the Lambs, and Breaking the Silence), a Scoring the Silence featurette, and an original 1991 making-of featurette. Completing the package will be twenty-two deleted scenes, outtakes, TV spots, an Anthony Hopkins phone message, and trailers. On top of all that, the set will carry a four-page booklet and a number of exclusive Hannibal Lecter recipe cards.
Also available from the 30th January will be the Hannibal Lector Collection Giftset - a three-disc package that includes Silence of the Lambs, along with Michael Mann's Manhunter and the Ridley Scott directed Hannibal. This will retail at around $29.98. As this is a three-disc collection, we can only assume that only disc one of the Silence of the Lambs collector's edition will be included. I bought this and I really enjoy this movie
Its packed with special features which is a plus :D
Meh.
Red Dragon was ok, nothing great. It was never really tense or scary. Some of the scenes between Norton and Hopkins were cool, but, in spite of all its star power, the movie as a whole never found its momentum. I think the main problem was Feinnes. He's a fine actor, but he was just never creepy or scary. By stark contrast, Tom Noonan's Francis Dollarhyde scared the living daylights out of you.
agreed. amazing artwork indeed.
I enjoyed Red Dragon more than any of the other ones (and it's also the only book I've read thus far). I have the Hopkin's Lector Trilogy, so I dont think I'll invest on this. I do want to find Manhunter though. I saw it once, and didn't like it much, but it'll be good to have.
I never cared for Manhunter, but have it, it just seemed like a movie of the week type thing, and does not play well up against the others. I mainly own it due to the curse of being a completionist. Naturaly I have the other three as well. I think the extras are cute, but not worth my double-dipping budjet.
Can't see the "Rack of Baby Human" recipe....
Any word if the credits and pixelation issues have been fixed from the R2 versions? -
* Note about the transfer: There is a one pixelation error in the transfer, in the beginning of chapter 8 at the timecode 0:30:20.
* There are also some missing opening credits. First credits what are shown are:
-Brooke Smith/Diane Baker/Kasi Lemmons.
These credits are missing:
-A Strong Heart/Demme Productions/Jodie Foster/Anthony Hopkins/Scott Glenn/"The Silence Of The Lambs"/Ted Levine/Anthony Heald.
This only affects the UE versions, not any SE version.

Love the invitation idea, as well as the recepies. Very original.
Clerks 2 was made by MGM and they are on HD, so this might come on on HDDVD too....Blu Ray is horribly expensive and fragile- it is totally the "Beta" of this format war- long live HDDVD!!!
I think I'm probably going to get this. I also kinda wish they would re-relase the Two-Disc Special Edition of "Hannibal" with matching cover art.
Wow, those recipe cards are a nifty touch to the set, but a little bit unsettling. Particularly the "Dr. Hannibal Lector requests the pleasure of your company for dinner" bit.
Still, the set is a must-own for me. Love the packaging and the extras look good -- but I'm curious if Fox is just repressing the full-screen issues of "Hannibal" and "Manhunter" for the Hannibal Lector set. (I'm guessing they won't, but you never can tell.)

More pack shots added...
Why isn't red Dragon part of the package?
edit: nevermind, just noticed its answered (i only saw page 1 when I asked)

I like Mann's work quite a bit. There's probably no one out there at the moment that do a crime story as well as he.
Anyway, I think Manhunter is the best of the series; the only one that comes close is Silence.

Lost interest in the box set -- one disc Hannibal? One disc Manhunter? What is this garbage? What would be even worse is if the sequels were on a flipper (two-disc Silence, flipper-disc sequels) or some other flipper combination.
I just thought of that, Red Dragon is Universal property but still if you want to make the REAL Hannibal Lecter DVD collection, it makes more sense to use all the DVD's of the series even if their different movie studios, I'm sure MGM would of agreed with Universal on something. MGM would had to pay more at Universal though.
[/quote]For those who don't know, "Hannibal Rising" is the new prequel coming out Feb 9th, 2007.
Based on Thomas Harris' upcoming new book of the same name, this prequel shows a young Hannibal Lecter in three different phases of his life from childhood in Lithuania to his ten years in England up to his time in Russia before his capture by FBI agent Will Graham in Manhunter.

I don't Red Dragon is that bad, I enjoyed it for what it was. But I agree with BubbaGummer: enough with the multiple special-ultra-super-collector's-anniversery-director's cut-director's aunt cut-editions! a movie should come out on 2 DVDs when it is released: with extras, and without. (with the rare exceptions like LOTR) Maybe the day will come when additional extras could be downloaded. What do you think?
Red Dragan is an awful, awful, awful, awful movie. Manhunter is a very good, but very dated movie.

Fox, not Sony, has distribution rights for MGM.

I have none of the movies/DVDs, which one y'all suggest me to buy?
I have the Criterion release and double-dipped when MGM released it - the extras on the Criterion are excellent but if I want to watch the actual movie then I use watch the MGM DVD!
But there is nothing here that would make me triple-dip!
Also Manhunter really doesn't belong in the boxset - it should have been Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Red Dragon (don't get me wrong I love Manhunter but it doesn't belong in what should really have been an Anthony Hopkins box set).

interesting that they are including Manhunter instead of Red Dragon in the box set
I'll stick with just "Silence of the Lambs" hands down the best in the series and one of the best films I've seen. Personally, I think they're overdoing it with sequels/remakes. "Red Dragon" was ok, but "Hannibal"...meh. I didn't feel the same suspense and thrill I got from "Silene."

so the Mamhunter DVD in the set will be the full screen version right?(MGM really has not put out a good DVD of it so far).

I mad that my $60 Brazil 3 disc is NOT anamorphic and I now have to buy a single disc of Brazil that just came out to get anamorphic widescreen.
A movies that is NOT anamorphic should never have the Criterion word associated with it.Criterions are going for $100? Wow, that's insane. Anyway, as to the anamorphic situation, Silence of the Lambs, as well as many other features, were released on DVD before there was such a thing as the anamorphic feature you see nowadays, that's why so many titles don't offer it. Remember, Criterion is an old company that used to sell primarily laser discs, though they did offer a few titles on VHS. Criterion literally invented the widescreen presentation, running commentary, and bonus features. Everyone that was into laser discs was enjoying all that stuff years before DVD's came out.

This is coming out a few weeks before the prequel "Hannibal Rising" hits theaters. The book, by Thomas Harris, is already out & I've been hearing it really sucks. A big dissapointment.
Yes! They read my mind, except I find it very curious as to why they didn't put the two disc on the set, otherwise I would have bought it. Guess I'll have to buy em seperately still.
i would pick it up..if it included COMPLETE Lecter Collction..but without "Red Dragon" it's not worth buying..(i think Red DRagon was bether than Hanibal)....shame it's riped of of RD..
Nice Cover!!!

That's sweet! I can't find Hannibal anywhere and don't own Silence or Manhunter. I picked up Red Dragon for $5.50, so this will complete the series for me...
But then I just remembered Young Hannibal is in the making...

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I would only buy this version if I didn't already have the MGM SE. In any case, I would still pick up the Criterion.

Anyone who doesn't have this version is missing out.
I also recommend tracking down Criterion editions of the first three James Bond films. The running commentary is outstanding, so much so that MGM/UA threatened to sue Criterion if they didn't pull them from the shelves. Criterion only did just that and continued to sell only the versions without the commentary. The only drawback is that these were never released on DVD and you'll need a laser disc player, assuming you can even find these editions...Those profiles, while interesting and creepy, still didn't give me the need to own that version. Just on cover art alone this one is better. Put it this way, if you want a more atmospheric experience with the film, search for the Criterion Version. You want more of the behind the scenes info on the making of the movie(like me)you will probably be buying this version.

Don't worry about it. The Criterion edition has a sub-par transfer and worthless special features( besides the commentary), and is definately not worth the high price tag. I bought a copy back in 2005 for $100 CAN- and I sold it on Ebay 2 weeks later.

I USED to own the Criterion Edition, and honestly it sucked! The picture isn't very good and isn't even anamorphic. The only plus is the commentary, but all in all the MGM Special Edition blows it out of the water as far as quality is concerned. And I'm assuming this CE will blow all other R1 editions out of the water as well.

Copies go on eBay all the time, quite cheaply too (for an OOP edition). The Criterion edition is my favourite release (great commentary, original sound mix, DOP-approved) but my Japanese R2 DTS Ultimate Edition is a nice set. I dont double-dip on anything unless the two versions are vastly different, but I'm gonna get the Criterion version of this.

nice artwork. I was waiting for a CE of this.
Tempting. I will make the decision later since I already have the SE one-disc. Maybe if the transfer is an improvement I will pick it up. Too bad it's not an Extended Edition with a bunch of the deleted scene remastered and put back in, that'd make me buy it.
I don't own this movie, so I'm glad I waited. I love the artwork and the extras look great.

I didn't know the majority of people disliked Hannibal(I'm refering to those that liked Silence of the Lambs-trust me,there are a lot of girly men and screeching housewives that say "yuch" to that movie.Meaning It's too gory and they're sissies)in the States and the U.K until now.I mean, around Europe It's very well liked and got good reviews.
I like it a lot(specially the soundtrack)and place it way above Red Dragon(which I liked, mostly because of the cast),but not as high as Manhunter and Silence of The Lambs-those two are classics.
P.S:I also have the criterion edition of SOTL and trust me the SE is way better,in terms of audio and video(anamorphic)and special features(the audio comentary in the criterion is nice but that's it,the extras in the S.E are vastly superior)

Fox distributes MGM's content, and since Fox is Blu-Ray only, this would likely come as BD-only.

Nice! I KNEW I should not have bought it even though it was really cheap. Good thing I waited, because this looks like a sweet edition! Awesome cover art also!
Hannibal Lecter recipe cards?! Seriously, that's scary.
Good thing I didn't cave and get the MGM single FOOLSCREEN version.
Pity the commentary is STILL a Criterion exclusive. I hope they fix the credits mess up from the European DVDs.
It was fine on the SE but the UE has most of the beginning credits missing, it starts just after SOTL should've appeared on screen (I think).
The European UE has 3 hours extras, much more than the SE.
p.s - Great cover art though.

I assume this will be the DTS version other territories have had for a while now.
