The first three games and that Wii re-imagining were excellent, so it's kinda sad to see that the movies took the, "mindless fun," route. That is, the first one was pretty decent for what it was, but these movies really coulda been a lot more than they were. Which is the case with most video game adaptations, I guess.

My copy came in on Saturday. While I haven't had time to check everything out I did get through the first disc.

Picture is outstanding.  There are no imperfections and film grain looks natural and pleasing.

Sound is extraordinary.  Crystal clear and extremely creepy in the dark.

The commentary by Christophe Gans is fantastic.  He is brutally honest about the film.  It sounds like he does think the film is a failure but at least it is an intersting one.  He also offers an excellent analysis of the horror and fantasy genre and where Silent Hill fits in.  As well as that he makes a passionate argument for video games as art.  One of favourite parts was his explanation for the long running length.  He said he made it overlong so the studio would complain and he would be justified in removing the Sean Bean subplot.  It backfired when the studio loved the film and decided to release it as is.

The commentary by producer Andrew Mason and editor Sebastion Pragnere is very good too.  It mostly talks about production details but both participants are good humoured.  Mason, in particular, spends most of the time pointing out flaws and failings and mocking them in comical fashion.

A PiP of the film without effects is a lot better than it sounds.  The film hasn't been colour-timed either so for anybody interested in cinematography, production design and effects production - this is well worth your time.

There is another PiP of the behind the scenes footage.   Again, this is a lot better than it seems as it is very detailed and scene specific.  I recommend watching this one with the second commentary as that commentary is very scene specific too.

And that's it so far.  If the second disc is anything like the first I'm in for a treat.  If you're a fan of the film or just the imagery in general, it is well worth seeking out.

Didn't the first film receive something around 29% on RT?

Haven't seen Revelations but from what I heard it is like a turd concealed in some jaw-droppingly beautiful packaging.  Kind of like my feelings regarding the Max Payne movie.  I usually watch it with the sound off.

P.S. Thanks Disciple.  I never realised Gans did release a SE of Silent Hill (I knew he often promised it but I gave up after never seeing it mentioned anywhere).  Have ordered the bluray and will be receiving on Monday.

lee, you obviously DO care enough to have quoted horrorfan and then said what you said. personsally i don't care about or ever go to RottenTomatoes or it's ratings on movies but yes, 29% is very low. bottom line.

Horrorfan i hope you like this movie. i kindasorta-ish did. IMO it's not anywhere near as good as the first movie but it's still entertaining.

Are you kidding? You do realize that means only 29% of the critics liked it, so 71% DIDN'T. That's quite a ratio if you ask me. I mean, if you're comparing it to most modern horror films, yeah, it doesn't seem too bad. But s**t, compared to the rest of the pack, that is a lousy score.

I remember REALLY enjoying the first but my movie taste at the time was pretty bad. With its ridiculously low rating on RT, I might wanna re-watch it just to see if my opinion still reflects on how I viewed it years back. That being said, despite the abysmal reviews, this actually looked half-decent. I'll give this a rent but that's about it.

I'm a huge enough fan of the first film to own the French collector's edition BD, so I'll definitely get this when it's released. Heard the 3D in this is great so I'll go with the 3D release.

So-so sequel.  I can agree it isn't in the same caliber as the first film.    It had some good visuals and a few good scenes.  Too bad the script wasn't half as good as the first film

i LOVE (very much) the first movie and this sequel was ok. not amazing but decent.  it's a shame there's no bonus stuff on either. i never liked this cover/poster. the marketing for this was wrong right from the get go.
