Spiderman 3 review
I bought the Target Exclusive 3 disc set on release day. Didn't get to the theater to see it so this was my first viewing. Read several of the negative reviews so I went in wondering if it could be "that bad." Well, after watching it, I'm STILL wondering why people thought it was "so bad." I enjoyed it THOROUGHLY!! Tons of action, tons of emotion, and tons of enjoyment! I like the sappy love scenes as much as the battle scenes. I'm not going to just "accept" that Mary Jane and Peter get together without knowing HOW! Backstory is VERY important to me...without it, you'd have nothing but "Hi, I'm Spiderman...let's fight." BORING! Then again, it was all the "extra, backstory" that many critics slammed the Star Wars prequels on and I thought didn't delve into DEEPER!
SPIDER-MAN - The best superhero film ever made. I love "Spider-Man." Great action. Gave us a great surprise to the Spider-Man series.
SPIDER-MAN 2 - The best superhero sequel, although, not as good as the first film. But very close.
SPIDER-MAN 3 - OK. Decent. Didn't follow-up to the comics.

According to this news in the link below there won't be any special features on the Spider-Man 1 & 2 Blu-Ray discs at all. Will this be the same for every region?

Do you have a Circuit City store near you? If you do get the 2-Disc, you might get it for $22.99, if that's worth it for you. Or get the single-disc widescreen DVD. Maybe, it might be $13.99 or maybe even $16.99.

The standard definition trilogy is c**p. And why is c**p censored on here? I've been using the word since I was like 5.
Harry Potter wrote: Why do they call it a trilogy if Sony is gonna make 4 more of 'em?
for two reasons...
1) simply to sell it, sounds "cooler" this way
2) all the actors and producers always said this 3rd movie wrapped things up, was sort of an ending. so in a sense it is a trilogy.
but its mostly reason #1 lol
the word trilogy has been reduced to being used when any movie series has 3 parts...but trilogy isnt simply having 3 parts, a trilogy is when those 3 parts tell one ongoing story with movie 1 being the beginning, movie 2 the middle and movie 3 the end.
and going by that proper definition, there havent been many.

Was expecting the standard trilogy artwork to be with 1 picture of Spider-Man like the blu-ray trilogy, but artwork still looks nice.
Spider-Man 3 wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be like the first two movies were, but much better than Batman Forever. The first one is still the best one.

Here is the Spider-Man DVD Trilogy artwork. Not as creative as the Spider-Man Blu-Ray Trilogy artwork. http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51zbIKx7o...
Artwork for the trilogy rocks! Still I'll get the the third one on Blu-ray, I already have the first two on DVD.

Me too. So many people just love the second. WHY? It was so f**king stupid. Not much action. Doc Ock dies in a lame way. This was way better than the the second. I believe that you can never have too much villians un your spidey filcks.
Why do they call it a trilogy if Sony is gonna make 4 more of 'em?

With the PS3 being $499 now I see no reason why a BluRAy player shouldn't be around $300. There is no 60 GB hard drive and no software chip to play old games, nothing but a Bluray player which I want but not at $499. and no $50 controller

I didn't like 3 as well as I did the first two installments of the trilogy. However, I would still have to say that the film still had its moments.
Awesome High Definition Trilogy Artwork, but I don't have a Blu-ray player yet.
Don't understand all the negative ballyhoo about spidey 3. Not as good as 2, but still very entertaining.
The real question is if to get the "regular" dvd or wait till I get a blu-ray.

so does the high def trilogy contain all the special features of the regular DVD 2 disc editions of all those movies?
because i've noticed that it seems a lot of the older movies being released in high def (on either HDDVD or blu ray) seem to be pretty bare as far as special features go. like in some cases the regular DVD is loaded and the high def has nothing at all. i mean its all swell and dandy that high def has much better picture and sound, but its 2007, not 1997...why are they releasing such bare discs?

see, i had no problem with mary jane singing because it was an intresting way to develope her charecter, that is what she loves to do is perform and sing, so it worked. butttttt, i had a serious problem with peter dancing and whatnot, that was just uncalled for, cheesy and was very out of charecter. if they could rework the movie to take out peters dance scenes, it would be so much better.
not typo I just ment times 3,Spidey 3 was better then X-3 man what a letdown that was.
This movie sucked from start to finish. A director's cut can't save it, unless they decide to write a decent script and re-shoot the whole damn movie. Buried the franchise, seriously, Joel Schumacher style.
Instead of wishing for an extended cut because that Spider-Man 2.1 extended cut was so pointless, I hope there's a Spider-Man 3.5 director's cut. Still haven't seen the extended cut for Ghost Rider.

Thanks for your reply Matt.
I was thinking the same thing. If I'm not mistaken a regular dvd could not contain those audio tracks because of space needed.
Regardless I will eventually get my hands on the Blu-Ray discs. I haven't seen this one but I saw Spider-man and Spider-man 2. Though not perfect I thought the were very well done so I'll most likely buy the trilogy. I just hope that the transfers are top notch the first time around.

No deleted scenes, and a too-high MSRP. I'll be holding out for a 3.5 edition and just renting this stupidity.
There'll probably be a 3.1. But I didn't bother with Spider-Man 2's extended edition: that film was long enough, and I found 3 succinct anyway.
What an utter disapointment this thing was. Anyone with half a brain could tell while watching this that all the regulars I.E. Mcguire, Dunst, Franco and Rami are tired of the whole franchise. The only bright spots were Topher Grace and Thomas Hayden Church. Perhaps Sony should put this franchise on the shelf for a few years and then let someone else have the reigns. It worked for Batman.
I'll get the two disc, but I am surprised there are no deleted scenes.
That German cover kicks butt! Why couldn't we get that?!
I really do hope that Best Buy or Target sells an exclusive cover art that blows this one outta the water.
EDIT: Now that I look at the first two films' covers, I like the SM3 art. It keeps virtually the same colors and contains that bright orangy-yellow glow prominent on the previous two.

Damn you sony...37$ dollar for this 2 disc set??!?! that's a RIPOFF!!!
I'm not impressed with that cover art. Then again, I wasn't too impressed with the movie either.
Hopefully Target or BB or CC will have a different cover...and we all are lame, and will be getting the 2 disc regardless...however, I will not double dip with 'an extended cut' that is not called director's cut...oh well...
The movie was entertaining. Had it's ups and downs. The biggest issue, for me still, is Dunst. Really, REALLY want her out of the role of MJ! She is just miscast for the series. Regardless, I will still pick it up being that I already have the previous two movies. As for the price being way too expensive for some of the people on the site, well. That's why you wait for it on release date and pick it up at Best Buy, Circuit City, or Target. Or you can just wait until a couple of years when the big chain stores put everything dirt cheap.

Well, the Blu-ray edition of "Spider-Man 3" will have all the extras (one BD-50, the other BD-25) that the 2-disc standard definition includes and will be a 2-disc set (Sony's first 2-disc Blu-ray release, I believe). But yeah, that price is much too high. Even the POTC Blu-ray releases had a $29.98 SRP, and all three of them are 2-disc editions too.

Bad movie, thanks for wasting Venom.
this film was a huge disappointment for me also... i kept thinking i was dreaming and we were still going to see it the next day
everything just came across as cheesy... when it should have been (and had so much potential) to be dark. venom got knocked out for half of the final battle and mysteriously re-appears when sandman and peter practically hug it out :S
will still buy the region 4 edition to complete the collection and get all the bonuses that come with it

Venom makes a lot more sense than Vulture in representing Peter's battle with his dark side, and Gwen was barely in it anyway: they were just sowing sequel seeds.

Well, the coverart isn't bad, it's actually acceptable. I'm just not crazy about the border on the 2-Disc but it could be worse. I like the poster they chose, although I preffered the one where he was leaning on the building.

Horrible sequel... only the original and 2 succeed the franchise.
Man, I was really hoping for a lenticular cover for the Special Edition... That border's ugly.
That artwork is pretty bad; the picture is fine, but the ugly-ass border, the pointlessly eye-catching 'Widescreen' thing, and the really small, unnecessary tagline (which was from Spider-Man 2 anyway...) just ruin it. Much like many other franchises, why can't they just stick to the same style cover for each film?

There's nothing wrong with the image (except for the appearance of two suns in Manhattan...), I just think the border, multiple bubbles and tagline are hideous additions.
Man you guys and the cover art. It looks fine to me, much better than part 2's artwork, or part 1 for that matter.
Part 1 is still the best in the series. I guess i like the character introduction and the fact that they have some development, and there was some back story on the villian.

I don't feel like paying extra for the two- disc because I really don't care how Sam Raimi and co. managed to make such a mediocre film.

This was a good film. I have never been a big fan of the first two, they are just entertaining and fun, nothing more to me. And this third part is just as good as the first two, at least to me.

Fair point. I think you can perhaps blame the way the script was structured. The subway scene with Sandman comes earlier in the movie than the jazz club dance. Perhaps if the dance scene had come earlier, and these "dark" emotions had built in Peter until his confrontation with Sandman, it might have been better.
For the record, I saw the movie twice in the cinema, loved it the first time, not so much the second time. It's far from being terrible IMHO and I will add this to my collection - eventually. I belong to Columbia House and might see if they have a special deal on the 2-disc.

Great movie but I just don't get why Venom did'nt get more scene time, I knew their would have been a problem when they had three villans in one movie it took away from the best villan Venom.
They could have picked a better dvd cover, and where are the deleted Scenes. I was hoping for deleted Scenes to cover some of the scenes that where missing in the movie, as well as a alternate ending.

Am I the only one who apparently hasn't forgotten that while under the influence of the black suit, Peter/Spidey Spoiler goes off to find the Sandman and ATTEMPTS TO DROWN HIM (and at first thinks he's succeeded)? The suit's effect on Spidey is more insidious than some of you are portraying it.
$49.95? FOR A SINGLE BLU-RAY? Have they gone insane?!
The artwork is good, in my opinion. The art used from the international poster, so it's not a shoddy Photoshop job.
And nice to see there's no fool-screen edition for this movie.

No DTS - No sale!
I hate the artwork
I stand corrected.
Horrible artwork...
That's a really really REALLY bad artwork, he isn't swinging, he isn't hovering, he obviuosly isn't just holding with his arm, he isn'g gonna shoot a web to where his right hand is pointing and I don't think he is grabbing anything, whew...shame again...
I'm happy with the art. Can anyone possibly complain about it?
Artwork added...
I really liked the movie. I will be getting the 2-Disc edition. I think a lot of the complaints about "emo" Peter and the "Saturday Night Fever" sequence are funny, mainly because no one complained about the "happy" Peter from "2", and the "Raindrops" sequence.
I've seen the artwork, and I must say it is pretty atrocious. You would think they would keep up continuity like the first two had.

Well, actually, Raimi and his brother actually wrote the story pitch and an early draft of the screenplay for "Spider-Man 3", but Alvin Sargent rewrote the final shooting draft as production commenced on SM-3. Still, even with Sargent on board, you'd think he'd have the sense to cut out the jazz club scene early on in the script (and not bother on shooting it) and find a better way of having Symbiote Peter alienating himself from Mary Jane and Gwen. Chabon and the Smallville creators should've had a hand in writing the script, at least in the story department.
Still, I enjoyed the movie. I found the first film perfunctory, entertaining in spots but really lacking in originality. The second film was magnificent, while the third film is a disappointment (but still entertaining). Still, I think SM-3 is much better than the first film, but not nearly as good as SM-2.

Incorrect. Gough and Millar wrote a draft, which were rewritten by David Koepp and Michael Chabon, before Alvin Sargeant wrote the finished product. Sargeant, likewise, wrote the final drafts for the other two films, though WGA rules meant Koepp was credited with the first film.

no box set!? Yeah, like I really need the snow patrol video...
Decent film overall, but, this film took awhile to get going.
Venom was o.k., but, somehow I couldn't help but feel that Raimi was paying more attention to the Sandman character than with Venom & that is what the big downfall "Spider-Man 3" .

wow so much negativity...i must be in the small minority that thought it was great and the best of the 3...and now now, dont be immature children and "attack" me for saying so, be grown ups now kids.
dvd's coming sooner than i expected though so thats cool...as far as the price, remember these are always SRPs they post here and you'll easily find it for 28$ and under when its actually for sale.

Any word as to whether the featurettes will be a cohesive documentary, ala Spider-Man 2's Making the Amazing? If not, still, it'll be pretty comprehensive. I want to have a look at some early Vulture designs, when he had Venom's place in the script.

If Elfman hadn't had a miserable experience working on the score for "Spider-Man 2", he would've been back for "Spider-Man 3". The problem he faced was that he claimed Raimi was enamored with the temp tracks used to score the rough cut of SM-2 (such as "Hellraiser" ) and that he could not comfortably adapt his own music for specific scenes. He left the production, with most of the score already recorded. Then Sony brought in Christopher Young (who scored the runaway train sequence) and John Debney to rewrite some of Elfman's cues.
So when "Spider-Man 3" entered production, Raimi asked Christopher Young to score the film, incorporating Elfman's main theme and the Green Goblin theme into his score. Yet even with Young onboard, Sony wanted a similar sound to that of the previous movies. So during post-production, they used temp tracks from unused sections of Elfman's score from SM-2 (the cue when Aunt May gives Peter her engagement ring is one of the bonus tracks in the score album of SM-2). They even brought in Elfman's orchestrators to rearrange and record cues from the first and second movies (as well as bringing in John Debney and Deborah Lurie to write additional material). Some of Young's new themes for the film were cut and replaced with the rearranged Elfman themes. However, most of the music in SM-3 is Young's original score for the film, hence a different sound.

This movie was pure c**p. It had a few nice parts, but 90% of this movie was a waste. I MIGHT pick it up if I can find a used one somewhere for under 10 bucks
While the weakest of the trilogy, the film was still a very entertaining pop-corn flick. The action and effects were great and about half of the drama was very good. Had Sam Raimi only taken a more serious approach to the black-suit instead of having Peter dance like an idiot it would have been much better. As a matter of fact, the film would have been excellent if it was just peter, the black-suit, and harry because the Sandman story was very unnecessary. Although, what's done is done and the 2-Disc DVD sounds PACKED! I just hope the artwork is good and that Spidey 4 brings the series back to the top.
I thought the first two movies were better. This one was okay. I'm going to have to think about whether or not if I want to buy it or not. So far, I'm thinking about getting it as an X-mas gift and just rent it a few times beforehand. I'll definitely ask for the 2-Disc Edition. I wish there was a 2-Disc Extended Edition, though, like there was one for Ghost Rider.
Why the hate for this movie? I'll tell ya why:
Venom and Gwen Stacy were severely misused and underused.
The way the symbiote was introduced was just friggin' lazy.
The way Peter Parker turned emo rather than a tough brute when the symbiote took him over was just ridiculous.
The "secret" the butler kept from Harry was again, lazy.
Which the last thing mentioned led to the worst "climactic battle" of the entire franchise.
The absence of Danny Elfman's brilliant cues (save for a remixed opening theme) is very noticeable.
Spider-Man 2 reigns supreme thus far in this franchise. I will only buy Spider-Man 3 after it hits the $10 mark. It's not worth any more than that to me. WORST film I have seen all summer.

Does this cut have only one villain or all 3?
Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins are the two best Comic Book Movies ever made IMO - and love the cover of Spidy 2 on DVD by the way, got a poster of that as well...
3 is sorely dissapointed, I thought it was the worst in the trilogy, although it's hardly bad in anyway, it's at best a mediocre movie - too many villians and too little time to develop them all into any substantial storyline (yeah i know it's over 3 hours long, but even that couldn't fit it all villians that they had properly)
Any how I'm getting this on various editions - the French and German LE for a start and surely will be getting the Blu-Ray Set for this as well + 1 and 2 in Blu-Ray. Simply can't wait to watch 2 in Hi-Def!!! This surely will be the release that will push the sales percentage for Blu-Ray even higher against HD-DVD...lol

I'm hoping there'll be a Gift Set for this one too, and a bit torn about a possible 3.5 - if they include more of Venom and less jazz dancing, I might be up for it.
Overall a bit disappointed, but I think it works. Going to the clock tower for no apparent reason ( ? ), Topher near-tears as Eddie Brock / Venom - all annoying, but doesn't ruin the overall experience. I'm glad there's humor, but I wish it was a lot darker and more time was spent on shifting into it. I like both Bruce Campbell and Mageina Tovah, but Mary-Jane could be more involved (and maybe even save her own a** for a change?).

Spiderman 3 was a good superhero movie. I think people are mistaken a film not being up to their demanding needs as being bad. And, that's just it, SM3 wasn't bad, it's just everyone's expectations were way too high.
LOVED the first two, sorely disappointed in 3.
I think one of the things I really hated is that when peter is possesed by the symbiote, he doesn't turn evil, he just becomes an a$$0!e. Struttng down the street, pointing and winking at the ladies, treating MJ like complete c**p, and the last straw...the dancing scene. Dear god what the hell was Raimi thinking?
What little there was of Sandman was great, but that's the problem, he was barely in it! Unless you're going to develop them properly, can we please stop with the multi-villian sequels!
I was never a huge Venom fan, there are about a dozen spidey villians I would have loved to see first, but I have to say, I did like where they were going with the Eddie Brock / Venom arc, Eddie's "confession" scene in the church was particularly nice, but once again, the characterisation is diluted by giving him so little screen time.
'Sigh, at least we have IRON MAN to look forward to next year. I think THAT is gonna rock the house!

well thanks, dvdactive, for letting me know what day NOT to buy this dvd.

this movie was soo bad
you can tell they ran out of ideas half way through the movie

I thought the movie was very weak and flawed, but way better than At World's End, and I think I'll get the single disc of this (even though it'll eff up the continuity in my collection of the series) and wait for the Mega Deluxe Super Duper Also Comes With Lube For Further Raping By Sony Edition. I wish Sony would just make HD-DVDs for the hell of it so I can get it in high-def and it'll look as good as it did in IMAX.
I saw the cover at another dvd websidet, and its horrible. Wish they had used the picture above.
No directors cut, no dts, no deleted scenes, no superbit=no sale. This movie was butchered in the editing room, and will very obviously have a directors cut coming out. And wow what an SRP! Thanks Sony!
I liked it, even though it was not as thrilling as the second one. It was however, better than the first. One thing that I really hated about it were the FX. It cost 300 million to make and they couln't come up with better ones?
As usual I will wait for some sort of Trilogy Box set. It seems that more Exclusives and Extras get released when they compile everything into a box.
This was probably IMO the best of the trilogy so far. Tons of character development and resolution of a few issues.

This movie was the biggest let down of the year, I expected a hell of a lot more. I will pick this up when its cheap to complete the set.
We Love Being Screwed
Will be getting this, haven't seen it at the theatre yet...or maybe I should wait for the 'director's extended' cut.
However, what's up with those director's cut editions? Do you think they wouldn't allow Raimi to have his own cut? Give me a break, Spider-man 2.5 was an extended cut, it wasn't a director's cut. Or tell me why you as a director would allow to have your name on the credits?
As for the price, it is stupidly high...what's up with companies charging lots of money for 2-disc editions? What happened with the same price for the first 2 editions? Now everyone is screwing us for the 'special', 'deluxe', '2-disc' editions being so damn expensive?

first off, that's not how much the movie will cost, this site always displays the MSRP... now, as far as the msrp's they are displaying, i think there might have been a mistake, i don't think i've ever seen a blu-ray msrp at 49.95. the most i've seen is 39.99
Spiderman 2 was some weak-a** c**p. It was friggin' "Days of Our Lives....starring Peter Parker" and insanely boring. Even the action in it was weak. Spiderman 3 is about 1000x better than SM2.
Dreadful movie - just dreadful. I've never been a big Spidey fan, but this was the nail in the coffin. Easily the worst movie I've seen this year. While the too many villains issue was certainly one of the big downfalls, the thing that really stank up the theater, for me, was Peter's so-called foray into the darker side of his soul. Wow - look how sinister Pete has become, he's combed his hair down and makes the girl across the hall bake him lots of cookies! Yes, I see - the biggest battle truly does lie within - and what a pathetic little battle it was. And what makes it even more devestating is that Macguire is more than capable at playing a convicincingly sinister figure - as he does to perfection in "the Good German", which, while not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, at least showed us Macguire's range, as he shuffles from an "aw-shucks" boyish cherub to a frighteningly sadistic, brutal thug with nothing more than a blink. Why couldn't we have seen that Macguire in S3?
And don't get me started on how for some reason Dunst sings 3 different songs (or was it 2? sorry if I got this wrong - I've done my best up to this point to forget the movie as much as possible), a random asteroid carrying an alien just happens to land right next to Peter's bike (out of all the places on earth), the dialogue doesn't elevate itself above a "Dawson's Creek" level most of the time, the jokes are flat and stale, most of the cast looks bored, and even Bruce Campbell manages to look like an idiot. What a complete waste of talent - I have an idea! Let's cast James Cromwell (one of the greatest actors on Earth - period) and then put his talent completely to waste! Wouldn't that be awesome? And that's just one example.
I thought third superhero movies couldn't get much worse after X3 - but this certainly was.

Really? I actually enjoyed "Spider-Man 3", but POTC 3 was the most disappointing threequel of this year. I liken it to "X-Men: The Last Stand". "Spider-Man 3" was reminscent of the later Batman sequels (such as "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin"
in the terms of villains and plotting, but SM-3 did a better job of handling the three villains than any of the pre-Nolan Batman films did.
Personally, all the faults with "Spider-Man 3" can be attributed directly to the producers, and not the director himself. The film was just packed with three villains (Avi Arad insisted on using Venom) and some of the plotting was ludriculous. Black Spidey's biggest offense is to show up Mary Jane at a jazz club, and there wasn't enough Spidey to begin with.
And kudos to Sony for making this the first 2-disc Blu-Ray release (and not cram everything on a BD-50), although Disney got to that area first. But still, both the Blu-Ray and 2-disc special editions are horribly overpriced. ($37 for the regular 2-disc DVD? Are they expecting a lot of people to shell out enough dough for that?)

Alternatively, you will be available to own Spider-Man 3???
this film's script and screenplay were atrocious. Baah...too bad you had to go ahead a ruin a good trilogy, Sam.
God i hate how Sony do this. You can guarantee there will be another edition comes along towards xmas next year with all the features they've kept back from this one. Sony are the biggest rip-off merchants for DVD out there. Does anyone remeber the rather weak re-release of the first Spiderman movie with an "exclusive" third disc of...well c**p?
Spidey 2 remains the best movie of trilogy. Spidey 3 was a mild disappointment but the action sequences still delivered. Too many villians in the kitchen. Thank God they're ending here for now though. I'll still be getting this on release day.....
I'll get the double-disc. I really liked this movie, probably the best of the three.
Can't wait to get the Blu-ray set...and put the third one up on ebay immediately.
Scene: Top of a skysc**per under construction.
Sandman "I'm sorry I killed your Uncle."
Parker "Um, ... ok, bye."
Sandman goes away.
I did not care that Venom was only in a few minutes in the last act, nor did I care about the blatant feeling like it was a contactual obligation to need to have more of Toby's face shown, making me see more of Peter Parker than Spider-man. I just thought the Sandman (who looked great) fizzled.
Maybe part four will take it back to the fun part one had, and NOT give us more, more, more villians.

I have to disagree that the previous 2 DVD's had plain extras. The "making of" on Spidey 2 is one of the best out there.
I will be picking up the 2 disk here, though know good an well a Spidey 3.2 won't be far down the road. I thought the film was good, but a let down after Spidey 2 kicked major butt and is, IMO, one of the best comic to film production done. I could have done without the 3 villain arc in Spidey 3. They were able to be extremely successful having only one main super villain in the first two. I would have been content with the ongoing struggle between Harry and Pete and then either had Venom or Sandman added, not both.

Wow, that is one big cast commentary? Can't wait to get this, best of the series and easily the best superhero film after Batman Begins and X2.
So far, the most disapointing movie of the year.

Does this release include a version of the film that isn't s**t?

2-$36.95 for the 2-disc set?!! WTF!? companies keep increasing the prices to 2-disc sets, i wouldn't be surprised if 2-disc sets will be above $40 next year.
boycott this release already!

So no deleted scenes? Wasn't there supposed to be a whole bunch of deleted scenes? I guess we'll have to wait for Spider-Man 4 to come out for Spider-Man 3.5 or whatever.
This movie was da shiz-nit, yo.....but only in certain parts. They need to have Aunt May and Mary Jane killed horribly in the fourth one, that way we'll be spared from weak relationship advice, and a lot of whining.
If I get a PS3, I'll get the High Definition pack without a doubt. But it looks like normal DVD for now.
Let's hope the extras are a bit more riveting. I've found the previous ones to be quite generic and plain.
