That was what I feared. I've bought a few of Sony's extended cuts in the past, and they're very good at releasing them with no input from the director at all, and just whacking the existing deleted scenes from the original release back into the film. Admittedly, they do it in a seamless way, but it's still nothing fans of the film haven't seen before on an earlier release. I'm hoping for fresh stuff in this, but if it's not an actual director's cut, I won't hold out much hope of it being worth watching.

If anyone criticizes Spider-Man films for being too "soap opera"--all I can say is you've obviously never read the comics these films are based on, hehe
(as someone who has read like 600 issues of the various major titles, this film was brilliant and in the top 5...or 3...or 2...comic book movies. Superman is probably #1, simply because as pointed out, there's not enough wisecracking in these)

8 MINUTES?! GADZOOKS!
Hate the name "2.1" (yet I was ok with X-men 1.5! go figure lol)
I have yet to pick up spidy 2 so I may pick this version up..

Unless this has a DTS track which I highly doubt I will stick with the Superbit.
Those of you mentioning the FX cut, I would guess that this will be a little different. I doubt they'll keep the Spider-Man 1 recap and hopefully will extend the action sequences since they weren't really extended in the FX cut. Granted, I have no proof of this, but it just seems logical. Also, given that there are no deleted scenes on the Spider-Man 2 DVD, any extra material will be new to me, with the exception of the 2 minutes worth of FX stuff.
I just hope we get some good extra features. The ones already on Spidey 2 were great. And the suggested price is rather low. I'm sure it'll be available for $15 at most retailers. And I'm a Spider-Man shill so I'll buy anything they release. I'm cautious with everything else, but with Spider-Man, I throw that caution to the wind.

Reminds me of X-men 1.5 - "The quest for more money strikes again"
I'll wait for the 3 movie box set.
Yeah I never bought the DVD waiting for this cause Raimi said there would be some extended action scenes, which I thought the movie could use. So even if it's only 8 minutes, I don't have the DVD so I can get this.
i was wondering how I was able to get the original 2-disk verson for $10. I guess I benifited from the suckers who are gonna shell out for this one.
I SMELL A TRIPLE-DIP...
Or explain why it's called 'Extended Cut' and not 'Director's Cut'...
And STM is a different case, but it is worth renting it, even if it has no extras.
And Hulk is by no means the worst superhero movie of all time...think Elektra, Catwoman, Daredevil...Hulk had an actually good backstory and a good plot, what almost everybody wanted was a green monster destroying things...come on, we're better than that!

No behind the scenes featurettes? Or at least 'improved' behind the scenes featurettes? I found the original releases lacking in special features. I was hoping this one would have better stuff! Still have to think about it...
I, too am happy with my two disc edition. My pet peeves are the following: next time include the (deleted) or extended scenes the first time around...and, what prompted me to join this board: take a real good look at the artwork on this double dip.
Some graphic artist seriously goofed. Doc Ock's robot arms in Spidey's eye are not in the same position as they are behind Spidey. In the eye, the bottom two Ock arms are to stand Doc Ock up- as they are pointed downward and the scenee appears to be above the city. Another arm is seen in the eye. Only one arm is 'seen' reaching out.
Given the street date, they may have time to correct this. As for the new 2.1, there better be more than just 8 minutes, a trailer for Ghost Rider (I'm sure there will be one) and a sneak for a film which I already intend to see and buy that DVD when next Christmas rolls around. So the hype is more or less meaningless.
I didn't mind the X-Men 1.5, as it did not have some of the carry overs from the first X-Men disc (mutant watch, easter eggs) and it had the commentary and an extensive 'premiere party'- which, I have to admit, I only could sit through once.

FINALLY! It seems like forever that we've been awaiting official word on this.
This was something that Raimi had planned for a long time, and the main drive was that he wasn't happy with the train-fight as it was in the theatrical version, even though it was the first thing he shot for it. It was the chance to finish this piece to his satisfaction that persueded Raimi to swallow his pride and make fans pay out again (rather like Bryan Singer hates putting out multiple editions of his films).
The changes to the movie seem to be the following:
More character moments at Peter Parker's Birthday Party.
The awkward conversion Peter and MJ in the back garden is a little more revealing.
Spidey's post-powers trip in the lift is now reconstructed from alternate takes - this was a scene that played OK in the cinema with a full audience, but goes on for far too long once outside the auditorium.
Dunno what this adds up to, but there is a new scene with MJ and the character "Louise" in a shoe shop.
Peter parker's trip to the campus doctor gets some more milage.
JJJ tries on his newly-aquired Spider-Man suit.
The sc**p between Doc Ock and Spider-Man after the bank spills out into an office.
Finally, the aforementioned train fight sequence has the extended stuff that triggered this new version in the first place, and Raimi claims it takes place along the side of the train, with some very cool stuff.
It will be interesting to see if Raimi calls this version his definative cut or if he does a Peter Jackson and says that this is just an alternate way of watching it.

Totally unnecessary and so obviously tied in wih SM3 promotion. They could have easily released this a year or two ago. Just another way to milk more money.
I'm a sucker for extended cuts and director's cuts, even if I already own the theatrical cut(ala Daredevil and Underworld) but this doesn't sound that appealing to me. I'm just fine with my 2 disc theatrical cut of Spider-Man 2. Besides, I read on another website that they did air this on FX last month, as was mentioned many times over on this forum, and that is exactly what this is. A friend told me he watched it and that there was nothing special with it.
Had there been an extended cut for the first Spider-Man, I would feel differently. BUT...I MAY be enticed to buy this if say, a movie ticket to Spider-Man 3 is included. Otherwise...most likely no sale.
And my question to Sony is: Where the heck is my Extended Cut for Underworld: Evolution?!

Sony has released the final specs:
DISC ONE:
- 2.40:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
- English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
- English, French, Portuguese and Spanish subtitles
- Audio commentary with Laura Ziskin and Alvin Sargent
- Spidey Sense 2.1 trivia track with integrated pop ups that take you on the set during key scenes
DISC TWO:
- Spider-Man 3 Sneak Peek
- Multi-Angle: Danny Elfman's Score
- "With Great Effort Comes Great Recognition" featurette
- VFX Breakdown - an in-depth look at the visual effects of Spider-Man 2.1
I give Sony for not rehashing most of the extras from the 2004 edition, but I expected more content on the second disc!

Oh joy, an extended release of a s**tty movie. I might have to scoop this up to line my litter box with.
The title is cool though, 2.1 is a good name. Movie still sucks though.

Raimi and Singer both suck. They each have maybe 6 really good or good movies between them.
Spider-Man
Apt Pupil
Usual Suspects
A Simple Plan
The Gift
X-Men
The rest all suck!!!!

KINDA LATE RELEASE THIS DONT YOU THINK... I GUESS
I will wait, like some of you I will get the 3 pack when it's out.
extended scenes are so pointless. worth 9 bucks

As for the quality of the series, I think they're really good. If the third tramples over the second the way the second trampled over the already-good first, then it'll be absolutely amazing! My main problem is Tobey Maguire; he is a perfect Peter Parker, but as Spider-Man himself, he doesn't have nearly enough charisma or presence. He hardly says a single wise-crack in the movies at all! That's one of the things that made Spidey such a cool guy: the ability to keep cool under pressure! As it is in the movies, it's just Peter in a suit. But, like I said, the series is very worthy, and I will be picking this up.
