I don't think the US release was cut in length so the running time should be the same. They digitally censored (ruined it) by adding figures in some scenes to hide some of the sex acts. The paternalistic MPAA doesn't want us to see penises I guess.
I'll never forgive nutbar Cruise for approving and actually defending the censorship. The fact that he's now the head of a studio (or something) is not a comfort, lol!
I was originally pretty excited about this box set because I don't have copies of any of the titles, save The Shining, but then I thought, man, it looks like c**p! Kubrick films deserve a better "collector" set than a bunch of keepcases in a cheap cardboard box. Special packaging would have been nice and couldn't they have updated each film's image instead of recycling the same old stuff? Is Criterion the only company that hires graphic designers?
Anyway, this is really just individual re-issues bundled together, so I decided not to buy it. I'll keep waiting for a nicely designed set.

It is the unrated version on the disc, however, the rated version was omitted. Future copies of the dvd will not say that the r-rated version is on the disc.
same thing happened to me. And when you check at the back of the cover, the running time is also 159 minutes.
Question about Eyes Wide Shut SE:
I purchased the Eyes Wide Shut today and was curious about the Unrated Version. The back of the cover says the DVD offers both "selectable" version, however, when i put the DVD in my player I got no choice at all, the movie starts playing directly, without a banner that it is the unrated version. Is there an easter egg or something? Or did they just not release the Unrated Version again? Anyone else have an experience?
Thanks.

Yes, the artwork HAS been revised, but it's not the artwork on the website. It's worse! Don't get the box set because the covers are god awful. Truly, terribly, bad. The individual releases are normal however.
Has anyone heard anything about revised artwork? It seems like when you click on the website for the dvd box set it shows different artwork.
I will definately be picking this up on Tuesday...

IT'S NOT HIS COMPLETE COLLECTION!!!!
Where does it claim to be?
Quote: The man is dead, he is not going to be making anymore films, so what is the hesitation to bring out a COMPLETE STANLEY KUBRICK COLLECTION!?!
Many reasons, including the fact that his other films are with different studios, and WB doesn't have distribution rights. Studios rarely co-operate on box-sets for one director. Which is why you'll never see Taxi Driver in a box set with GoodFellas or The Departed.
Quote: They are missing:
Barry Lyndon
Being released the same day.
Quote: Dr. Strangelove
Just had a two-disc 40th Anniversary edition from Columbia.
Quote: Lolita
Being released the same day.
Quote: Spartacus
Criterion owns this one.
Quote: Paths of Glory
The Killing
Killer's Kiss
MGM...
Quote: The Seafarers
Fear and Desire
Day of the Fight
Flying Padre
Who owns these ones? Not RKO anymore. Even more studio conflicts.
Quote: Some of these are old...but the studios have them!!
Sure, but which ones?
Quote: I will never buy a box set like this unless I KNOW that either the man or the franchise is OVER
Well, the man is "over", and so would this franchise you speak of. It's your loss then, you'll never see a "COMPLETE COLLECTION", unless the studios decide they want to share the profits with any studio, which will happen when Hell freezes over.
However, if more people buy this one, perhaps MGM will realise that the ones they own are worth releasing in a big ol' box, so in effect, you are preventing the very thing you're seeking to be released from being released.

Does anyone know whether the dvds in the boxset will come in standard size keep cases or reduced/slim cases??
I'd love to get the box set but hate to have the dvd come in those horrendous slim cases...they totally screwed it up for me with the die hard box set that came out earlier. would hate to make the same mistake here.

I never got Clockwork Orange so I'll probably pick that up. And a new Shining DVD is tempting. 2001: ASO I'm considering, but might not upgrade on that one.
They are kind of uniformed with the black.
I almost want to hold off, because they will deluxe-ify BL and Lolita, and then next year they WILL sell a complete box. And again, like many European boxsets of a directors works, where the covers all have a uniform, common design/style-not a hodgepodge of mixed designs-using the new 2001 as a design template of sorts, they could all be beautifully redone- the ancient/iconic adsheet/font covers are looking more garish all the time. Youll note that the original ad fonts are a jumble of new styles, also. The newer generation of buyers probably are not all that caring on this matter. Maybe one of these cover designing sites will pick up the slack that WB wont.
What the h*ll were Warner Bros thinking?! Uniform Cover styles/art for a all!

full metal jacket is great stuff
Along with the Kubrick documentary, I count 10 discs, but the release states the set only has 9. Is the documentary featured on one of the other discs?
Originally, I planned on only getting "Eyes Wide Shut", "Full Metal Jacket" and "The Shining". But I think I'm going to wind up getting the box. I've never seen '2001' or 'Clockwork', but have heard great things about both. Looking forward to this.
Ben Dover wrote: I cannot fathom why WB woud not include BL and Lolita in the box
It's really just simple business economics--by comparison those two titles are not as popular (ie not big revenue generators), and including them here and having a higher priced set as a result of their inclusion would put off a lot of potential buyers.

I cannot fathom why WB woud not include BL and Lolita in the box-I believe they too have been remastered. ALL films will include 16x9 and FF version (when applicable) hopefully no flippers.
Maybe we should write Warners to get a reconsideration.
It makes NO sense.
Each of SK films have an "iconic" font/design.
If they are going to change one (2001) they should do them all in a similar theme;
Personally, designs that passed as ad art back in the 1970-80's seem rather garish to me today.
And theyve been done to death.
And the EWS-very poor design.
a real jumble of cover artwork.
I rather like the new 2001 design

Wow, I LOVE that Full Metal Jacket artwork!
Full Metal Jacket is the only one that I want to upgrade
Yea these are great, but Barry Lyndon really deserves a HD DVD, it would be amazing.
Love the cover art except for the box.Perhaps there is a extra special edition coming out for my favorite Kubrick film,Barry Lyndon.
I actually like the Eyes Wide Shut and Full Metal Jacket covers.
The extra`s sound great as well. And both cuts of Eyes Wide Shut as well! excellent :D

The Artwork is c**p, considering the importance of these titles to 20th century Cinema WB could have done better than this. Having said that I will certainly be picking these titles up, I just hope the transfer does the films justice.
This artwork is a disgrace on the original artwork.
shame.
shame.
Artwork added for Eyes Wide Shut and Full Metal Jacket...
That box art is pretty tacky, but i'll pick this up anyway.
I am going to get the Shining for sure..
I am unsure about A Clockwork Orange as I have it already in that special edition with the film cell & I am not into commentary too much..
Im not sure what to do - double dip ACO or not any advice ?

I agree. They're very generic now.
i know it's weird, but i kind of prefer the covers that have a plain white border with the "stanley kubrick collection" banner...they were so distinct and tasteful. they almost just look more average now.
I truly hope that the Barry Lyndon DVD is not scimped on. It's probably my 3rd favorite Kubrick film after 2001 and A Clockwork Orange. It's a shame that it's not in this collection, although that is almost certainly because it wasn't as big a hit as the other films in this collection. At least not at the time.
I'm really looking forward to the commentaries on these dvd's, they should be very insightful. Particularly on Eyes Wide Shut, an extremely misunderstood film. And the perfect ending to Kubrick's filmmaking career.

Yep, I'm grabbin' that...
i think a plain white cover with a huge Kubrick signature in black would do.
I am still kind of skeptical about FMJ having an IAR (Intended Aspect Ratio) of 1.33:1 (or 1:37:1 I think). The movie looks very open matte, with TONS of head room on almost every shot. I'd like to see some comparisons, kind of...I think the IAR might be 1.85:1 or 1.66:1.
I just found out about the edited American version of Eyes Wide Shut. I think I'll give this a 2nd chance with the unrated version.
hmm...i hate to say it, but i'll probably buy this set, even though i own the last kubrick collection. i need two disk versions of these movies.
Unrated Eyes Wide Shut? Finally...thank God.
Horrendous boxset artwork...shame for what's inside.
Excellent. The director gets his due.
The Shining's special features are pretty disappointing.
still no Eyes Wide Shut (Two-Disc Special Edition) or Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition) covers yet?

From what I've read, the reissues of Barry Lyndon and Lolita are going to be nothing more than the exact same discs as the previous versions.........sans snapper cases. "Supposedly" both films will be receiving their own special editions at a later date, but that hasn't been confirmed yet. Personally, I don't see why they didn't just go ahead and work on SEs for them alongside the rest of them so they could release a fully intact (at least with the films they own) Kubrick collection. Oh well. At least they actually put effort into theses SEs, as opposed to the 100% half-assed attempt at an anniversary edition that Poltergeist is getting.
Whoa, whoa. Barry Lyndon and Lolita might be getting special editions AFTER this? How absurd.

I don't like the box art much. The pictures are too small and very unflattering. They honestly remind me of the poor picture quality of the last releases. That being said, the extras are awesome, I just hope they're substantial and not 8 minute puff pieces like on most releases.

Is there any news of a blu-ray release of the Kubrick collection, as well as Lolita and Barry Lyndon? And will there be extras on these two?
Hmmm...featureless Barry Lyndon and Lolita. Any word if they are getting new transfers?
FINALLY! I held off buying the other ones, single disc white snapper cus I KNEW these would be coming only when.
I'm disappointed with the box. The movies are such classics and deserve a box that is detailed and creative and worthy of the Kubrick name. This is something that looks like every other box that someone could create in a matter of minutes.

Most of these films are a bit c**p. The Shining is only good for the bit Where Jack Nicolson opens the door and says "Where's Jonny?" The rest of it isn't scary though.
Those are some great details. Re-releasing the previous version of Barry Lyndon? So it's the exact same disc (minus the old WB snap cases)? No new transfer or anything?
I hope we get some more details on that specific DVD soon.

They've also announced the ARs (whether or not they still apply from the "Anamorphic Widescreen" remark above, I do not know. Could it mean that they are the same as before, but now anamorphic?): Quote: These will include 2001: A Space Odyssey (2.20 - 16x9), A Clockwork Orange (1.66 - 16x9), Eyes Wide Shut (1.78 - 16x9 - we believe this is the uncensored version), Full Metal Jacket (1.78 - 16x9 - already available in high-def) and The Shining (1.78 - 16x9)!

Awesome. I'll be getting (or rather replacing) Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining.
Hope we'll see some more specs (and cover art for FMJ) soon.
And since these are coming to Australia, hope it reaches us on R2 (in Scandinavia) before 2008. (Or heck, before 2010!)
If they're in the same video formats as before I can live with that, but I'm very curious about the details and extras. What seperates "Deluxe" from "Special"?

I wouldn't pick up the box set as Eyes Wide Shut is utter drivel.
Well what do you expect? It's got Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in it.

Anybody know if they're in widescreen?
I'm really glad I waited so long to buy all these movies because this is definitely going to be worth the price cant wait for it
I love that 2001 cover. I may just have to get this. If 79.92 is the retail price, does that mean that most stores will have it out for 69.99-ish?
SOLD! Woot. best. week. ever.
I wonder if they'll include the "international version" of Eyes Wide Shut or if it'll be the US censored one. Ditto. Lolita should be here.

this sssssucckks this is gonna be the worst boxset if their not reduing lolita of lyndon.MGM should stick their kubrick titles in a new boxed set too, warner might end up doing sepereate editions to match, do they expect us not to expect those special edtions. i'm not sure the double dip is worth it..yet
each of these are some of the best dvd artwork ever. special props to 2001 for being a brand new yet totally kickass design and The Shining for the simple yet effective negative of the original artwork with the kickass classic old school lettering.
I only wish they had gone for the original theatrical poster art, especially on 2001. I hates it.

Open matte is the technical term I believe.
I'm pretty certain The Shining was meant to be widescreen, considering Kubrick's perfectionism wouldn't have made such blatant slips like the helicopter shadow in the opening titles, which could only be removed by matting the picture.

If they were to do that especially with Kubrick films I think they should just go completely bare-bones with no menus or anything so you can watch the movie uninterupted and have the highest compression rate possible on a standard DVD but I think having two disc sets would be pretty definitive.

I don't any Kubrick films as I was waiting for something like these. Glad I waited.
A Clockwork Orange & The Shining is mine, all mine.
Is Full Metal Jacket going to be released in widescreen this time? I ask only because it was playing on one of the HD movie channels in 1.78:1 and it looked uncropped.
Looking at the DVD's, its funny they put at the bottom of the Shining-full screen, as Stanley Kubrick intended, but on the others, such as Clockwork Orange, 2001, and Full Metal Jacket, it just says modified from the original format. Its like Warner is pointing out their mistake.
Please Warner correct this grave error you already pointed out on the previous releases and give us anamorphic widescreen or NO SALE!

To be extremely picky about the covers i don't like how the Shining's cover image isn't taken to the edges but the others are. It just looks like a cropped screenshot with the title above it.
YES the onscreen title is A Clockwork Orange, and the book is called A Clockwork Orange, but the film has always been Stanley Kubrick's Clockwork Orange.
HAPPY BECAUSE:
All of these films are FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY getting the 2-disc treatment they so richly deserve, ESPECIALLY 2001: A Space Odyssey (My all-time favorite film).

But with all due respect to Mr. Kubrick, I'm dying for some deeper insight into these films. There's been precious little, in the way of behind the scenes footage or otherwise to much of Kubrick's work.
DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE:
I'm sorry but I absolutely HATE the cover art for 2001. The font needs to be in the Futura family (Stanley's favorite) and they need to use one of the many fantastic Robert McCall posters on the cover and not that CGI'ed monstrosity.
The "A Clockwork Orange" cover isn't that much better. YES it's "A" Clockwork Orange and should be included as such on the spine.
I already own the previous Kubrick box, so as a obsessive Kubrick completist, this is a definite re-buy for me.

FYI - According to talk on AVS forum, these are supposedly getting a blu-ray and hd-dvd release in October as well.
I have Clokwork, Full Metal Jacket, 2001 and The Shining. I hate those snappers like everyone else. I will upgrade as well.
Kubrick is one of my favorites. Clockwork and Stranglove posters hang proudly in my office. I have never seen EWS so if it is uncut that will be something I can check out.

I had held out mostly because I never liked the old WB cases so I think that having standard cases is right up there with new transfers and all that.
I had been really contemplating just picking up Barry Lyndon this past week but now I'll just keep waiting.
MGM should release a new set of there three Kubrick movies aswell. They have some really good releases such as the Scorsese films and new transfers plus a few extras here and there would be nice. Something like Day of the Fight would go perfectly on the Killer's Kiss DVD.
Edit: The EWS is most likely the uncut version as Warner Bros have recently said the uncut version would be out in late 2007.

I will also say that it would be great if "Eyes Wide Shut" is the uncut version ...
Yes, yes, oh yeah!!!
YES!
I wonder if The Shining will have both the Euro and US cuts? Ive got them both but it would be nice to have them in one set.
Cant wait to get my hands on these

Some great Kubrick movies getting the two-disc treatment, about frigging time!!!!

That's true. Aside from "2001" and "Spartacus" which were both shot in 2.20:1 and 2.35:1 respectively, the rest were filmed in 1.37:1 and then matted to different ratios.

The Cover artwork for all are great...
Especially The 2001 Package!
I'll be getting 2001, Clockwork, and Full Metal Jacket, along with the Lolita and Barry Lyndon releases!

Yay! We have been patient and have been rewarded :D
Does anyone know if "Eyes Wide Shut" is presented in its uncut form, without any of those CGI people superimposed over the orgy?
P.S. - I sure hope the special edition of "The Shining" features the alternate ending! I've been DYING to see that.

I'm with others in hoping these are anamorphic widescreen, especially "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Full Metal Jacket".

Well, that's because the title is: Stanley Kubrick's Clockwork Orange. Probably because of the non-inclusion of the 21st chapter, but don't quote me on that. Plus y'know, he was kinda a glory hog (until things went wrong, them blame the author of the source material.)

I'm disappointed that they're using the same The Shining cover as the current one. However, the fact that it's finally coming out this year and under $30, it's a definite buy for me.
Now, can anyone confirm they'll be available on standard definition?

F**k yes!!!! I was sooo close to getting these! Especially 2001! Thank you god! Yesssssssssssss i can't wait!!! Now have to wait for my Dark City SE and A Bronx Tale SE!
Awesome.
I always loving finding other Lyndon fans
While it isn't my favourite Kubrick, it is probably 2nd or 3rd. Despite it's length and pace, I actually find it extremely rewatchable and entertaining.

BARRY LYNDON is my favorite Kubrick film.
These are set for release in Australia too. I wonder if we'll FINALLY get the longer version of The Shining... And hopefully Eyes Wide Shut will stay uncensored over here too.
holy !@#!, this has made my day.... just look at those covers, but where is BARRY LYNDON?!?!?!? and Lolita? Why would Warner Bros. snub those two films and not include them in the collection? I don't see any reason in that?
I'm with all you guys. I have been waiting forever for these. I am praying these get the anamorphic treatment.
Those are awesome covers! Where the hell is Lolita dammit?
its about time, all great great films, i cant wait!!!
I hope this means after all these years we'll finally see the unrated uncensored version of Eyes Wide Shut, that I'd be willing to buy but only if it is in fact the unrated version. And yeah widescreen would be nice however unlikely for his 1.85 films.
please let these be anamorphic widescreen transfers
Orgasm!
That artwork for The Shining and A Clockwork Orange is BRILLIANT.
I know what I want for Christmas this year.

About bloody time! I have ACO, but will gladly get the collection here. As well as the seperate BL and Lolita.

YES! YES! YES! I CAN NOW FINALLY GET MY FAVORITE FILM (Clockwork Orange), I have been waiting YEARS for this set!
Excellent! Really looking forward to it!
i already have all these, so i will wait to see what the extras consist of, and if they are new transfers, which i highly doubt. But the covers are great.
Barry Lyndon and Lolita are listed as coming out on the same day at $19.97 a pop. Don't appear to be part of the collection though
These are also due out in HD with lossless sound around that time, can't wait.

WONDERFUL!! I have all 3 of these already, but Kubrick is by far my favorite director of all time, a master who can never be topped. All 3 are easy double dips for me.
Not digging the artwork for 2001 though, and that's my favorite movie of his

Does this mean we may finally be able to get our hands on that wonderful documentary without having to buy a massive and expensive boxed set or having to suffer through a horrid VHS copy? Sounds like it.
I'm sorry, but Barry Lyndon was too overlong and boring to be included.
I'll probably get eyes wide shut and clockwork orange.

Where's BARRY LYNDON and LOLITA?

FINALLY! iam probably the only one in this thread who didn't buy the old boxset.

2001:2-disc
Clockwork Orange: 2-disc
Eyes Wide Shut:2-disc
The Shining:2-disc
Full Metal Jacket:1-disc?
Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures:1-disc?
that's 10!

Can't for the details. Also, I wish this included Barry Lyndon to complete a little run. Oh well these look awesome no matter what.
Leave it to Warners on how to properly produce 2 disc special editions. Paramount (Chinatown) has a lot to learn
It's about time these films got the 2 disc treatment.
I don't have the artwork for the others yet - will update as soon as I get more details.
THIS IS AWESOME! i cant wait to get it! love the covers
