Cases suck
I hate the cases. Where do these go on a shelf? Somewhere next to the Cylon Head Battlestar Galactica set?

Ummmmm...where do you see anything about these Star Trek DVDs being pan-and-scan? They were created for network television in the late 1960s; of course they're going to be full-screen. Just wondering what you are complaining about here.

ummmm...thats his signature I think....You should really make the letters italics or bold them or something David.
How ironic that the entire show with better features then before can be purchased for about the same price as a single season of the show when it first hit dvd. I would have hated to have shelled out beforehand.

Everything I have heard about this packaging is keeping me from making a purchase. I understand each DVD is in a cardboard slipsleeve. Can anyone confirm that?
Just got season 1. I like the packaging, it's cheesy just like the special effects!
had this 10 days already resolution is awesome you can see the seams on spocks ears where the makeup was applied hope they change the menu on the other sets to diffent ships maybe the shuttlecraft or another ship
is this set really nesisary?! one could buy them seperatly for about the same amount...if im not mistaken
I never liked Star Trek and probably never will, but are there people out there who are willing to fork over $300 at one time for this?

Hi, everyone, I recently found this site thanks to a friend, and it's great. I'm excited to become a part of this community.
As to the cost of the original TOS DVDs, which are sold for around $15 US, the cost of those 40 volumes comes out to $600 US, plus tax. For half the cost, you get the same material, plus featurettes, the original episode trailers (which were on the 1st DVD release), and the text commentaries. All in all, I think that's a great value, compared to what it originally was.

Thanks "Me You" for explaining David's comment was really a sig, and thanks David for fixing it to look like a sig. Makes sense to me now!
I've got to say I'm looking forward to this set--since the advent of DVD, I've been hoping for a "one season at a time" approach to my favorite series, and we're living in the Golden Age of exactly that. I didn't buy the original two-episodes per DVD Star Treks because I didn't want 40 separate cases hogging a shelf in my little Brooklyn apartment.
I'm glad I waited now, but at the same time you've got to shrug and move on when companies "double dip." Hey, we've all bitten the bullet and bought more than one version of a video (I think I've had Goldfinger in every format except Super-8).
Finally, hey, I like the cases. Sure, they don't fit right next to your other ones, but they're a nice conversation piece and attractively designed. All my books aren't the same size; I don't mind if all my DVDs aren't. That said, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks--your opinion may vary.

I agree with John---I like the boxes! The packaging is unique enough for ppl to notice right away, especially when you place them right in the middle of a shelf full of standard DVD cases.
The transfer is awesome, too. I noticed the same thing that Henry mentioned: It is so clear that you can see flaws that arent noticeable when I see an episode on the Sci-Fi channel, like Spocks ear makeup. They just look and sound amazing!
Special Effects Cheesy? Hell yes and I love it! Plus when I consider how old this stuff is, and that when they were making these episodes my parents hadnt even MET yet, I think the special effects are really just a sidenote for such a fun Television show.
As for the price, the lowest Ive seen the individual seasons so far are over 100 each, so seems about the same. I did buy some of the original, 2 episode DVD's, but like John said the concept of studios double-dipping (or more!) DVD's is nothing new and I expected something like this. Besides, a few of my friends like Trek also, so Im sure theyll be more than willing to accept my older DVDs as a cheapie Birthday/Christmas present, lol.
Also, Kaya, you might not like Trek but Im sure you've shelled out some nice duckets for things we would consider not worth the money. And to top it off, I saw a report on the national news saying that if something sells well on DVD, it virtually guarantees the future of a franchise. Just look at what happened with the Family Guy---it was cancelled because it had low ratings. Goes on sale in DVD format, sells well, and bang: New seasons of Family Guy (I never cared for it, but its a good example)! So even if I already had the full collection before, I have plenty of friends and family that like Trek enough where they would love to receive even my hand-me-down DVD's as a gift.
I dont buy DVD's unless its something I feel has plenty of 'replay' value for me. Since I dont buy DVDs just to collect them---like some friends of mine do---I dont mind paying a fair price for the ones I will repeatedly watch. Case in point: I enjoy the newer Trek but not nearly as much as the old 60's cheese ones
So to me, the price on the newer season sets ($80ish) is a bit too high yet, so maybe if they get cheaper Ill take that plunge. I guess its just a matter of paying for what you know youre going to enjoy over a long time, compared to the price of DVD's you might just watch here and there.

Ohhhhh you have no idea. There are lunatics who wear uniforms to work and makeover their apartments to look like a star trek set. No joke. Go rent the movies Trekkies and Trekkies 2 - theyre documentaries on those sorta people. You'll fall off your ass laughing...hehehe
As for the pricing of these sets as compared to other TV shows they are totally overpriced, but paramount knows trek fans will pay so they have no reason to lower them. Dunno what this would cost around my area as I've not seen a listing for it, but seasons of The Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager go for...get ready... $153 a season or $99 if your lucky enough to find em on sale. Thats the reason I don't have any. If they were say $50 or $60 a season id buy them all in installments, but at $153 of 8 seasons of 3 shows thats $3672 and a big hell no!

The Price
I'm a big Star Trek fan and I intend to own the entire Star Trek Collection on DVD. Presently, I have the entire set of TNG, DS9 and Season 1 & 2 of Voyager. I agree with everyone that the price is outragous but I don't buy them in stores anyway. I've purchased all my DS9 and Voyager box sets on Ebay. I don't pay more than C$90.00 per set. I just bought Voyager Season 2 for C$70.00 including shipping.
