I take it, they'll correct the audio mistakes in Star Wars?
These are the '97 SE's?

If so, I'd DEFINITELY be tempted to buy them, as long as Hayden Christensen is removed from the end of ROTJ!
I definitely would, too.

these are the original theatrical release. i'm def butying this one. i just hated that dumb song in return of the jedi. it was so lame.
There will always be releases of these movies - especially if Lucasfilm needs more money...
Theatrical Cut DVD
I know there is a film print of the original Star Wars movie out there somewhere, I want to buy it really bad. You know, even before Episode IV is added in. That is the only version I want to be remastered, and fixed up. I could actually care less about the other five films. None of the rest had the same remote impact as the first movie in 1977. So, anyone out there know where to dig one of these up?
Where's the boxset of the Original Theatrical verisons ? Why didn't the one that came out last year include all three verisons on one disc ? Seriously.
I'm just going to wait to get the so called "7 disc collection", if they ever get around to releasing it or if they even release it at all.

Well, are they the '97 Special Editions or the DVD Special Editions?
Either way, I won't be picking it up...I have the original set, and the changes, to me, weren't substantial enough for me to go out and buy a set of different versions. Yeah, Hayden in ROTJ bugged me a bit, but not enough to lay down another $50.

Sorry, Chris
Sorry, Chris. I think maybe I had too much caffeine today, I've been a little irritable. No disrespect intended.
If they are the special editions then why the re-release?
It's what we got before bar the special features disc. Damn FOX.

Any confirmation/word on a Prequel Boxset, from Fox, Tom?
Fox has confirmed these will be the special editions as expected...
Why in most film debates its usually quite sensible, but with Star Wars its so different and gets nasty.....
Never mind its a period of civil war in the galaxy,
more like
its a period of civil war in the Star Wars fanbase...

Um, hello? Moderator telling you to give it a rest here. Thank you.
Bratt Tolino
Bratt Tolino,
It's funny how you put labels on everything. If someone would like to see something different, they're whiny, but when you do it, it's completely different, huh? You are a hypocrite, Bratt, plain and simple. Is this forum moderated by Lucas? If not, how could ANYONE be telling him what to do, suggesting or even demanding? People here are venting. This would be the place to vent over the DVD, don't you think? You are just living proof that computers shouldn't be allowed in special ed classrooms.
So far as telling everyone to "get a life", why is it that people say that when someone gets passionate over anything at all? Very telling, sounds like you're projecting about your boring life.
In summation to the rest of your statements, I fart in your general direction.

Calm it children. And stop trying to bypass the filter, it's there for a reason.
Shemp
Shemp,
You're such a... Shemp.
I'm not telling George what to do with his Star Wars flicks nor was I whining because he didn't put Padme at the end or ROTJ.
All I said was that I LIKE Christiansen at the end of ROTJ better than the 80 year old guy they originally had and would have loved to see Padme in there too. I didn't tell or demand George make changes as I see fit because truth is, I really don't care. I watch the movie and once it's over, it's over and back to life for me.
You, like many others, whine and whine and whine because you can't have your original version, what to see Han Solo shoot Greedo first?
Who cares who shot who first?
It's a friggin movie SHEMP!
No one is erasing your childhood memories. They're still there in your Shempy little head. If you want the originals THAT BAD, go on ebay and buy the VHS tapes, buy a video recorder and tape them onto dvd. If they're so important to you, spend the money and do it. No one is stopping you. The quality on the originals SUX -- that's why he did the special editions in the first place so when you watch the $hitty VHS and transfer it to dvd, you won't even be able to tell it's a horrible copy because, yes, VHS has $hitty quality but so do the original movies so you can have all the $hitty quality your tiny heart desires.
I was six years old when SW came out in 1977, saw it at the Seaview Movie Theatre in Brooklyn then and saw all the other ones when they were released too but if I want to watch them again, I don't want to watch the $hitty quality and am glad Lucas updated it just like Paramount did on Star Trek The Motion Picture -- THAT original isn't on dvd either, dope.
Would you like to cook your food on a wood stove too? How about video games? Maybe all the video game people should make Pac Man just the way they did on the Atari 2600 -- because it's the original... naaaa.
Shemp, get a life. Again, they're movies. Just movies. Entertainment. Live your life and if it's full, maybe these Star Wars things won't piss you off so much.
And as I said before, write your own story, print a $hitty first draft and never change it! You can do whatever you want with it since it's your story and leave Lucas alone to do whatever he wants with his. After all, he'll be remembered long after you're dust in the wind... and no one remembers your name or whiny pouts either.
Sheesh!

Lucas should have abandoned the first three films in 1983.

True, VHS does not last forever, but I was also referring to the laserdisc release which with the proper care should last indefinitely in most cases. I don't expect Lucas to release the original versions again and even though I hate the special edition versions, even cleaning up effects let alone adding and altering things, I'm fine with that since I own three copies of the trilogy on laserdisc. He said that was the last time they would be released; new and future video formats didn't enter into his decision.
I agree with you again, and I know Lucas will not release them again, but I do feel so sorry for some people that do want the original versions as some people arent so lucky as you and I who have them on a good format.

First of all, about me not 'getting it', I do get it. So, in the Star Wars Universe, only Jedi get to remain as spirits? Everyone else just dies and that's it? That's a crock. And it would be PRETTY lonely in the afterlife if it's just Anakin, Obi Wan and Yoda hanging around.
Hmm...Maybe you should practice what you preach, Brett. You tell everyone else to "write your own story and do what you want with it, don't tell someone else what to do with theirs", yet you'd like to see changes done to fit your tastes.. They have a word for that, it's called a hypocrite.

Nope. You are missing the point entirely. People won't be upset with an updated Superman II since there's already an available version of the original. This is why so many people are irritated, is because the original films, unaltered, are not available. I could care less what Lucas does with the films, but I'd still like to have the OPTION to decide for myself what version I'd like to have, original, or altered.

This coming from someone who would probably like to see all the SW movies remade with the cast of Buffy or The OC. You know what you sound like? A 15 year old girl. Sorry if some of us old enough to have pubic hair have fond memories and are nostalgic of growing up with SW. You'll understand how we feel when someone starts releasing altered versions of "Barney" or "Power Rangers" as that's probably what YOU grew up on.

Lastly, these Star Wars movies are going to be around long after all you morons are gone. Lucas wants to make sure what is seen, is the story HE wants to tell, not what a bunch of whining weiners want, again, who will be long gone -- and not even REMEMBERED -- while these films will.
Morons? Whining weiners? Again, very telling of your age and/or maturity level. Just because you lead a trite, mediocre, completely forgettable existence, don't assume that the rest of us do as well.

What if you don't have the VHS originals, Einstein? Is it too much to ask to get a copy of the original film before Lucas has another mid-life crisis and/or marketing gimmick and decides to tear them apart?

I dont want to start a big net row over this and I agree with your post, but VHS doesnt last forever, and some people for whatever reason dont wanna buy bootlegs or use fan-edits
In the end would it hurt him as a little thank you to long serving fans to release them for two months etc after all it is the people of that generation that put George where he is now, and without those people "Star Wars" would not have been a success and their contiuning loyalty to him and the franchise for nearly 30 years.
He would still sell plenty of SE because the generation of today want the SEs and some fans will want both.
I am not bashing George I like the bloke and I am more than happy with what I have got, i am just making an opinion that a limited release would not hurt his vision for the Star Wars Universe in the end.
.......... and it would make the Star Wars community a slightly happier place for a start, etc.

And the debate and argument goes on
Yes they are just movies.
I agree Lucas has to update the originals and keep up them to scratch
but some want the originals as they were originally, but surely George as a reward for those fans who have stayed loyal to George and Star Wars for over 25 years by releasing the untouched ones for 2 months and/or limit it to 500,000/1,000,000 numbered copies instead of releasing merchandise such as SW toilet paper Red Darth Vaders and SW Bowling balls. a 2/3 month release or numbered release I feel it would not and should not compromise his "Vision" for the Star Wars Universe. After that is it, you will not see them anymore, if you want Star Wars you have have my new version.

I'm hopeful this PT release will at least have an updated TPM with the new CG Yoda we've all seen pics of floating around and a cleaned up transfer. Not too much to ask!
Actually having looked at dvd.co.uk's "coming soon" page a prequel trilogy box set is due early Dec. As for this re-release. yes it's a cynical marketing gambit but it's likely to pay off because as market research obviously suggests;
a) if something has Star Wars on it, people will buy it and
b) if something has "Limited Edition" on it, people will buy it.
I'm as big a fan as anybody but I'm certainly not as enraged as some of us appear to be by this release.

1) that everyone should be forced to except hayden as luca's choice to fill the shoes of vader... in a time when NO ONE DID (before sorta redeeming himself in III)
and,
2) to jump start his mission of tying in the prequels with the older trilogy after everyone had just about dismissed the prequels for barely being able to even shadow the spirit of the original films.
take all that away, and even still you'd have to be one dumbass filmmaker to emotionally reveal a character looking one way, only to (not even five minutes later) expect everyone to except someone else completely different. add that to the fact that even alec guiness looked forty years older then ewan mcgreggor, instead of 19... furthermore, why was hayden sporting sebastian shaw's jedi garb which mind you he never wore not once in either II or III?
besides, if you have a problem with shaw being the orignal face beind the mask, then you obviously must be new to the franchise and/or too young to have ever appreciated SW before... it may have had a flaw here or there, but it was a lovely party back then... sorry you had to miss it.
Its all part of George Lucas "Vision" at least til the next boxset when things will be changed again.

besides, if you have a problem with shaw being the orignal face beind the mask, then you obviously must be new to the franchise and/or too young to have ever appreciated SW before... it may have had a flaw here or there, but it was a lovely party back then... sorry you had to miss it.

Another good move by Lucasfilm release the same version of O.T for Xmas, more cash for the bearded one,Im sure the prequel boxset is imminent as well to hit before Xmas.
What is it that makes SW so damn special ? Even when most people think its bad, they still spend ages wittering on about it. Whats so exciting about selling a vanilla version and a deluxe version ? I just don't care and i can't believe i wasted 5 minutes disspearing about the fact that some of you seem to so much.
Who knew that another repackaging of "the" trilogy would bring so much inter-geek hostility!
I'm still waiting for an official press release but at the end of the day I'll either buy it or I won't... and I won't lose any sleep over it either way!

If anything, I would like to see Padme thrown in at the end too, this way Luke would finally get a chance to see what a hottie his mother was and would give a nice happy ending to Anakin and Padme.
The ONLY one who should have a problem with a young Christiansen at the end of ROTJ is Yoda, because Christiansen gets to look all pretty at the end while he still looks like a 900 year old frog fossil!
WHAT THE FUCK are you talking about now! your excuse for a request is as shitty as this boxset. man, talk about a pathetic bastard that loves to rape the OT

this is some type of lower price-point edition. the last box-set retailed at $69.99 and generally sold for about $50. this one retails for $49.99 so will probably sell for like $32-$35. i guess it's for those that can't pony up the extra $15, although i can't imagine that too many die-hards didn't find a way to come up with the cash the 1st time.
Does this really shock anyone? Not me. Have fun Fox!
i dont understand people who complain about "crappy/flimsy" cardboard cases for box sets..i mean yes it be nice for them to be more sturdy and all but its not like you're gonna play football with them or something, they'll just sit on your shelves until you wanna watch whatever movies they are.
i have a few box sets that many complained about including the star wars box and aside from maybe a bit of dust, they look brand new and untouched. i dont understand how some people end up damaging the boxes. but thats just me...lol

How stupid. They could of added the second trilogy with it as a 6-disc Star Wars collection. I'm hoping that it'll happen.
Ludicrous?

I find that ludicrous. Was Lucas high when he cast Shaw as Vader/Anakin originally? He made a decision, he should stick to it. All he's doing now is called backpedaling. I was only 4 when ROTJ came out, but I can't see people coming out of the theater like, "That was cr*p, Vader couldn't possibly have been that old!"
I personally think it was rather difficult to determine Vader's age with all the scarring and whatnot. I don't think anyone questioned whether Shaw was too old to play Anakin until Lucas removed him from that scene. If Shaw was still alive, I bet he'd be pretty pissed about it.
I just think Lucas is spending way too much time readjusting the OT when he could be making VII, VIII, and IX. If he really cared about his precious stories, he'd finish the series instead of leaving it hanging. All this removing and adding of cr*p to the OT is retarded, and it's all a marketing ploy, it has nothing to do with art. If he's that concerned about perfecting his "art" from 20+ years ago, he can take the billion dollars he's sitting on and go invent a time machine. If he has a brain in his head, he'll make the last three chapters; SW is the only thing he's ever had real success with anyway(IMO), and if he strays from that, all the SW fans will resent him for it.
For the record, had I known those changes had been made to the OT, I wouldn't have bought the set.

At some point, Chris, you just gotta cut bait and realize that there are certain aspects of Star Wars that some people just don't get and never will.

PUT PADME AT THE END OF ROTJ TOO!
And like someone else posted, it made no sense to have that 80 year old guy at the end in spirit form since Anakin was only about 45 when he died.
Looks better with Christiansen,
Story is better with Christiansen at the end of ROTJ,
ANNNNND I would LOVE it if they put a Padme spirit form in there too. According to Lucas' original draft, only those with compassion can move into the force and still have their own identity. Padme had PLENTY of compassion for Anakin as seen in her last words in Sith so she should be there too.

Thank you, folks
Your insane ramblings about a reissue with a different slipcover has provided me with endless entertainment.
Seriously kids, they're only movies and no one is holding a gun to your head to repurchase them, especially if the content is the same as it was last year (save the bonus disc).

Well, I had bought the original trilogy Special Edition DVDs when you could find them on the Asian market for something like $10 for the three movies, so that's fine with me.
Now, if they were releasing the theatrical versions, that would be so great... We want the Ewok song! We want the original Lap Ti Nek song! We want Han Solo to murder Greedo in cold blood!

Are you people saying that you would prefer a flimsy digipak over protective Amaray cases? That you want packaging that falls apart, ala The Alien Quadrilogy, or packaging that is more susceptible to damaging the only thing that really matters--the discs themselves? I am consistently amazed at how much stock some readers on this site put into the packaging of DVDs, decrying a release based not on the content itself but the wrapper. I have no problem with the packaging of last year's release, and quite honestly, unless the packaging is defective, I never give it much thought in the first place. If it bothers you that much, you obviously have access to a computer and thereby the means to make you own packaging; it ain't rocket science to design and create your own DVD covers.
Just in time for Christmas.....
Clearly, this bare-bones set is being released by Fox in order to make some quick money during the holiday season. Holiday shoppers will see this box on the shelves and buy it as a gift -- it's that simple. You can't blame Fox for trying to milk more money out of SW, but this is pretty pathetic, nonetheless. And like many other posters have stated, I also think the packaging for the SW Original Trilogy last year was awful. SW is one of the most important films of the 20th century and it was given a dime-a-dozen boring packaging treatment. Mind-boggling.
no extras? why bother...

And I don't want to hear "they're his films, he can do what he wants with them". Next thing you know he'll digitally replace all the Ewoks with Wookies just because he originally wanted it to be on Kashyyk, not Endor. If I had known all those changes would have been made, I wouldn't have bought the updated set. Any talk of "his spirit is young because that's what he looked like before turning to the dark side" or "Lucas can do whatever he wants" is just bull**it posturing.

There is no logistical reason to even consider having two box sets of the same movies released within a year of each other. Lucasfilm knows how much money they are loosing to those out there who are copying the laserdisc onto DVD, and they're going to cash in on that. From what I see there, nothing is mentioned as "special" and yes, I realize that this is the actual trilogy in Luca's mind. However, doesn't fox have the final say in the matter? I think when it all comes down to it, fox can over rule Lucas on anything if they really wanted to, and this might be the time for them to do it. Because you know the Blu-Ray 6 Disc set is coming next year, and they will most likely have 3-4 versions of each movie on each disc, maybe only 2 versions on the PT though. This will be Fox remastering the original trilogy in high definition so they can make money on it....if they dont do this, they're crazy.
Fox doesn't have any power -- they're just the distributors. LucasFilm owns the movies themselves.

Hmm.. easter eggs.
Does the first release have easter eggs on the movie discs? I know there are some on the bonus disc, but on the movie discs?

Absolutely no need for this. I'm not even sure why they didn't just print up more copies of the existing set. Unless the supplement disc will be incorporated into the mega set we all expect in the future. Yeah, thats probably it!
That HAS to be the Original Trilogy

I love the new box art, but I want extras like deleted scenes included (which were absent from the first DVD release and they do exist).
Dream on...
You have a better chance ropin' and brandin' Paris H, than you do getting the Original Editions! -Theyhavent milked these dry yet-not by a long shot!

Star Wars Box Set
I have to say I have been very disappointed by this news and Lucas's past DVD releases (as well as 20th Century Fox as a whole). I am an avid DVD collector and I felt that the Star Wars box set release last year was made of flimsy, bad quality cardboard. Also, rather than using DVD cases that give the "bare bones" style of packaging (which was also used on the Indy collection), a box set more like the Matrix Ultimate Collection or Godfather DVD Collection would of made the set so much more desirable. I actually hope they release each of the movies separately in their own individual box sets like the Lord of the Rings Extended Edtions that have all 3 releases of the movies with 4 discs (1 extra disc for bonus features). You could choose to buy them all separately or together that way. Although, I really have no hope that this will happen because Fox's DVD releases in general have been declining as of late. The double dipping is getting to be so predictable, that I just wait the necessary amount of mounths for the release of the 2-disc special edition/unrated/director's cut. Also, remember the nice Collector's Edition box sets that were numbered on the spine that included the Alien movies? Well even those are being replaces with DVD cases with slip covers. Fox really needs to listen to the fans and not their wallets!
I love that people react in an extremely negative way like SW is the only thing to ever be re-released on DVD or VHS...
again ?
what is this release twelve of the star wars trilogy box set ???
GET A GRIP PEOPLE ! NO ONE IS SAYING YOU HAVE TO BUY IT. TAKE A BREATH AND RELAX !
uhhh as much as i love and live my life by star wars there is no way id pick this up. Id buy just the box though, it is kinda nice

Shhhhhh - don't be putting ideas in George's head!
I'm pretty sure he'll suck everyone with the 2-disc Episode III DVD this year and then we can all double dip with the prequel trilogy boxset next year (that way he ensures you double-dip on all three movies and not just the first two)!

I don't see the need for this new release. The star wars films are classics, however, that still does not warrant another release when the previous release is still available. There is nothing wrong with the version available now except for a few gliches.
I'll wait until I read an official statement before I pass judgement on this release.
Although I will admit that if they are either the original versions or the '97 special editions then I would buy this set!
Speaking of Star Wars - WalMart are doing an exclusive "The Story of Star Wars" DVD with their versions of the upcoming Episode III DVD. Worth bearing in mind if you're a completist!

I dont get it! Just a repackagin, thats it? Why waste the money!? What would make more sense is releasing a boxed set of the Prequel Films, right? or at least a boxed set of all six films. This just does not make any sense to me. There are plenty of other great Fox films that need Collector's Edition releases, so why not make those instead of wasting money on a lousy repackaging. Hell at least these could have been the original films, not the Special Editions. Well whatever, this should not surprise us, Fox is a complete idiot with stuff like this, so whatever.
I think we're missing some important information here. No bonus disc. Old school artwork. . .I don't want to get my hopes up but is it at all possible these are the original versions?
Ok now I am a huge Star Wars fan but what the hell is up with this?! I mean it seems as if it's just the original boxset without the special features. If it has new special features i may by it but i seems highly unlikely. This is dumb.
I don't see the purpose of this...
Pfft...whatever...
crappy $$$ in
yet another shitty release by Lucasfilm so they can snatch all the you money of you. I really should put a ban on this, who's with me?
ahhh I'm freakin out I'm freakin out ahhh
just kidding. but come on, nothing to get upset about. it's the cheap version, for the cheap people. some folks don't even watch bonus features. this is for Them. They can have it.

Hmm, I know I'm just setting myself up for disappointment, but with the old style artwork, that really makes me think original editions.
*fingers crossed*

I really don't understand this release at all. THIS IS SO WEIRD

lol...good one.
Lucas won't spend the money to fix their "creative" choices until the next incarnation of the movies.
Too bad they aren't the originals though, for a second, I nearly jumped out of my chair when I saw the cover art.

Some clowns will buy it, I'm sure - because there is a new box. They bought the two R1 sets, too, because there was a fool screen release there, with a golden box rather than the proper silver one that the whole world has.
1.) If this is lucas' way of fixing all the video and audio errors of the first box set (AFTER they REPEATEDLY said those 'errors' were 'intentional'
@#%#$ THEM!
2.) If they designed the new trilogy's box to match THIS box set and not the original box set? @#%#$ THEM!

Where the heck is the Prequel Trilogy Boxset release???!! I hope they're just releasing this set to cash in on the PT Boxset release too, and HOPEFULLY the PT Boxset will have an updated TPM with the new CG Yoda and a cleaned up transfer!!
I suppose Fox is releasing this without the bonus disc in order to maintain continuity with the PT set release as well. It'll serve as a "bare-bones" set for those who don't want the bonus disc. But I do like the artwork for this set better...
What will be interesting to see is if this simply the current set repackaged (with all of the faults), or whether it's a new release with fixed audio and all the video glitches fixed.
if it's the latter than Lucasfilm could be opening themselves up to some serious criticism and potentially some lawsuits (hey, people have done it for lesson reasons). They can't very well release a set with 'fixed' bits after claiming that there was nothing wrong with the last set...

Now if they had said that this was the original theatrical editions, this might have been tempting. But alas, its more pitiful than anything.
I think I'll stick with the Star Wars Trilogy that came out last year. Just have to buy it.
Shoot!! I forgot that the recently released SW trilogy was a 4-disc set.
Hmm, as mentioned, I can foresee even more re-releases. I may just wait lol.

If so, I'd DEFINITELY be tempted to buy them, as long as Hayden Christensen is removed from the end of ROTJ!
You'd pay $50 for an 80-year-old to play Anakin Skywalker?

I believe these are the exact same versions currently available, only with a new box and WITHOUT the bonus disc. Fox is also re-releasing the other Star Wars movies. No need to get into a tizzy over this one.
Plus, for the record the original packaging looked far better anyhow.

These are the '97 SE's?

Hmm
... I don't think so.
Why would anyone want to buy the 97' Special Editions? The DVD set that is out now is basically the special editions but with completely restored footage, the special effects and sound were updated (and look/sound outstanding), plus a bonus disc was included. Now if this set were the original cuts ... I still wouldn't buy it because they're laughable. But I guess those who saw the originals in the theater would have that nastalgic value and want to own them even though they are horrible.
I still have the originals on VHS and prior to the DVD set, I couldn't bear to watch them because the graphics were horrible and the space battles were so slow and laughable that I didn't want to ruin the saga that I love. They were great for their time, but despite what the fanboys like to shout blasphemy of ... the update was a necessity!
Nice boxart though, maybe if the single disc artwork is cool enough I'll ask for a Christmas gift but as far as purchasing myself. Well I already cleared that matter up.

Uhhhhh? What in god's name is the purpose of this set? You lose the bonus disc from the previous trilogy release, and your paying about the same price. Plus, you know a 6 film set is bound to be released. Has 20th Century Fox snapped!?!? What kind of fools do they take us for? Not only do they have the nerve to do this nonsense, but they call it "limited". So what does that make the other one? Is that one going out of print? It's not like Star Wars is a dying franchise! They made record money with theatrical releases, mad money with the previous release of the trilogy on DVD, and Episode III is selling like crazy even though it hasn't been released yet! Good lord ya greedy bastards.
Who didn't see this coming?
WTF?! What's really sad about this is that even though I have the first released set, I might be tempted to pick this one up just because the box to the last set was so crappy and easily damaged. Have to regift the first one...
So, what are the predictions? How many more "limited" box sets are there coming our way? Between the OT and PT what, four more? *sigh*
Also, is it just me, or does that box look like more than a 3-Disc?

Cool
I've not bought the DVDs yet. I can understand those being 'forced' (heheh) to double dip may be upset though...
