Superman (US - DVD R1)
Warner has sent over details on all of the upcoming Christopher Reeve discs
Title: Superman
Starring: Christopher Reeve
Released: 28th November 2006
SRP: Various
Further Details:
On November 28, in celebration of the year of Superman, Warner Home Video will release a host of DVDs, all starring the late Christopher Reeve in his landmark portrayal of the Man of Steel. Leading the way will be the long-awaited Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut ($24.98 SRP), directed by Donner and representing Superman II as it was originally conceived and intended to be filmed. An overwhelmingly requested title, the movie features Donner’s original footage, shot but never used before, including a never-before-seen beginning, a never-before-seen resolution, with 15 minutes of restored footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El and much more.
Other titles to be released include Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition ($39.92 SRP) which features both the DVD debut of the 1978 theatrical version as well as the 2001 extended edition with commentary from director Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz, archival footage of additional scenes and screen tests. Richard Lester’s ever-popular Superman II will be available in a new Two-Disc Special Edition ($26.99 SRP) including a new featurette, vintage television specials and additional vault elements; and Superman III and IV Deluxe Editions ($19.97 SRP). Finally, The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection ($79.92 SRP) will be offered in an 8-disc boxed set including all the above (except Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut). We've attached detailed listings of every disc below, including the specs on Warner Home Video's release of Supergirl ($14.97 SRP) which, like the Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, will also be available separately.
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (1980/2006)
Superman II will delight fans who, for years, have been imploring Warner Home Video via voluminous numbers of petitions, letters, phone calls and e-mails to release the Donner cut. In fact, Donner had already shot most of the Superman II footage during Superman: The Movie. But as production on the sequel continued, creative differences between the director and the film’s producers became irreconcilable and Donner left the project. Although Richard Lester was hired to finish production, he chose to make major changes to the film, leaving only vestiges of Donner’s original vision and concepts in the version of Superman II that was ultimately released to theaters. Now, nearly thirty years later, Warner Home Video is honored to grant the wishes of countless Superman fans. With this DVD release, Richard Donner has become the first director in history to be able to complete a film he left during production with nearly all his footage “in the can.” Adding back a substantial amount of that unused footage, the director has seen his original vision restored and brought to fruition. Most notably, the “Donner cut” restores the Marlon Brando role, filmed for, but not included in the final theatrical release version of Superman II. The legendary Brando’s performance as Jor-El has finally been restored in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son. With so many other changes, large and small, including a variety of Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman, this Superman II will prove to be an eye-opening experience and an important addition to film history.
Superman: The Movie (1978/2001) Four-Disc Special Edition
A box-office smash, an Academy Award winner and a fan favorite since it first flew into theatres in December 1978, Superman: The Movie assembles a cast and creative contingent as only a big movie can. At its heart (just as in three sequels) is Christopher Reeve’s intelligent, affectionate portrayal of a most human Man of Steel. Watching Superman again isn’t just like being a kid again. It’s better. The movie’s legacy soared even higher when director Richard Donner revisited this beloved adventure 22 years later and integrated eight minutes into the film. Enjoy more footage of the Krypton Council, a glimpse of stars of prior Superman incarnations, more of Jor-El underscoring his son’s purpose on Earth and an extended sequence inside Lex Luthor’s gauntlet of doom. Reeve, Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Gene Hackman (Luthor) and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) give indelible performances that fuel the film’s aura of legend.

Superman II: Two-Disc Special Edition (1980)
“I thought the original Superman was terrific entertainment,” the Chicago Sun-Times’ Roger Ebert wrote, “and so I was a little startled to discover that I liked Superman II even more.” Unwittingly released from Phantom Zone imprisonment, three super-powered Kryptonian criminals (Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O’Halloran) plan to enslave Earth – just when Superman (Christopher Reeve) decides to show a more romantic side to Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Gene Hackman (as Lex Luthor) also returns from the first film and with a top supporting cast, witty Richard Lester direction and visuals that astound and delight, Superman II saves the day any day you watch it.

Superman III: Deluxe Edition (1983)
After Superman: The Movie’s epic storytelling and Superman II’s awesome battles, how could the first two hits be topped? In Superman III, meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon – and Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his most beloved role, deepening his character’s human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O’Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Incredible visual effects abound – but above all it has heart, heroism and high-flying humor. All in superabundance.
Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)
Christopher Reeve not only dons the title hero’s cape for the fourth time but also helped develop the movie’s provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. “For me, it’s the most personal of the entire series,” Reeve said. “It directly reflects what Superman should be, and should be doing.” Superman does a lot this time around. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The two foes clash in an explosive extravaganza that sees Superman save the Statue of Liberty, plug a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna and rebuild the demolished Great Wall of China.
Supergirl
Creative forces behind Superman: The Movie takes another page from DC Comics lore with this fun- and effects-packed adventure about the Girl of Steel. Helen Slater plays the title role, posing as Midvale prep-schooler Linda Lee, battling a sorceress (Faye Dunaway) for control of an alien power orb and enjoying an unexpected dating ritual called kissing. Peter O’Toole and Mia Farrow add more starpower to the superpowered excitement.

Thank the lord the 14 disc set was annouced. This is some of the worst artwork ever made. Just use the original movie posters and quit using design studants senior art projects for the DVD covers. The 14 disc set is very classy and wel done
The Donner Cut Packege is....well WRONG!
Can't wait to see the movie however.

I thought that the title of this article said that we'd hate the Superman II Donner version artwork. I rather liked it. Not the worst in the bunch (that goes to Superman IV) but definately cool.
who knows... this is probably just a slip cover for the donner cut dvd case itself? *crosses fingers*

I'm getting Superman and II together with Returns to complete the loose trilogy. I'm glad R2 gets the Donner cut with nice artwork in 3 discs and not the lame bootleg.
Artwork, schmartwork. I mean, I agree with some of you. At least we get a cool, extensive boxset with lots of special features, good picture and sound, ánd the Donner Cut of S II. I think it's great that Warner gave Donner the opportunity to do his version at last. But...I see that the Donner Cut is shorter. So I wonder what has been dumped and added back in and how it plays out.
yeah...something defintely feels more "sleazy" than anything about the Donner Cut cover...
Is it set in stone that "Superman III" will NOT be in 5.1??
Also, I have read that they are remastering the prints, and will be new versions, NOT from the 2001 releases. Unfortunateley now that the deadlines are approaching, we are hearing that they will be the same prints from the 2001 release... what gives?
If they are not remastered (the first three of course, who cares about number four) and "Superman III" not remixed in 5.1, then the only new discs I will be buying are "Superman II", and "Superman II - TDC".
The special features on "Superman The Movie" are identical to the original release (and I could care less about having the original theatrical version - I like the 2001 edit way better, nor do I care about the cartoons, etc.), so no point. "Superman II" is remixed and remastered, so yes, purchase on day one. The special features on "Superman III" are not enough to make me double dip. If it were in 5.1, I would pick it up on the day of release, otherwise, no thank you.
As excited as I am that the Donner cut is coming, apparently WHV is not. That artwork is a complete throwaway, and a slap in the face to the fans. WHV has been promoting the Superman releases in 2006 for at least 18 months now, so why do you think the fans are so disapointed??? They set us up to believe this was going to be one of the best releases in the DVD medium the way they were promoting it. Now the truth comes out. I sincerely hope they reconsider remastering III with a better picture and 5.1, while they still have time to hit it for the (hopeful, fingers crossed) 13/14 disc box set.
Yes, I am thankful for the good stuff (II remaster, IIDC) but they could have done SOOOOO much more. If you give the fans what they want, they buy it. WHV REALLY needs to redeem themselves from this debacle. This upsets me more than "Star Wars" not being 16x9! Eh, I prefer the cleaned up versions of "Star Wars" anyway.

Boring artwork.. all black like that. Does The Exorcist know they stole the tagline? I will pick it up of course, but I think they could have done better... maybe all those people who redesign their own dvd covers have the right thing in mind.
The Donner cut cover reminds me of a superman porno rip off or something. "Superman as you never have seen him before!"

Yeah, what gives? I hope Warner did that to finalize the artwork (as in changing it) and specs, and not because it was posted too early again.
Well, the only thing I loathe about the cover of the Donner cut of "Superman II" is that the font is just too wrong (change it to the official logo used for the posters, it'll look a lot better) and that it's too dark. The actual picture looks fine, but the surroundings and title is just way off.

I kind of like it actually.

Donner Cut cover isn't as bad as expected but the font should go.
I can see why Warners are separating this cut from the 'official' four movies though by having different 'art' work. Plus, you couldn't have the artwork on Superman 2 bigger or overshadowing Superman: The Movie, whether it's a new version or not.
Having said that, it does lack 'specialness', for want of a better word.

Box art is awful. I am patiently waiting out for the R2 art and any news of big box sets until I decide. Besides, I have until nov, so no biggie. But seriously, all they needed to do was resuse the poster art from the first set, and everyone would be happy, same goes for supes return. I may also get the R2 due to Supes 2 being a 3 disc set, plus it will take up less space. Time will tell.
why do I feel like they are trying to pull a star wars collection here?
Am I right in assuming the boxset isn't a limited edition? If so I have decided I'm not ordering any of these new DVDs until I know what is happening with the uber-boxset! I already have the old Superman boxset, the Anchor Bay 2-disc Supergirl set and all of the Fleischer cartoons so although I really want the Donner cut of SII I think I'll wait a little longer (after all if they do end up making a nice boxset I don't mind rebuying stuff again - I just don't want to buy it all again a few times in a short span of time)!
I actually don't think any of the artwork is THAT bad. Not stunning, but I would resist calling any of it terrible. What it is is simple. Certainly someone could have made the artwork better but the biggest problem on the original four is just all the "white space" in the artwork. As for the Donner Cut, I think the only real change needed is to give the title the actual "logo" font and then it will feel more official.
And yeah, I do feel that the fans should feel grateful that these all have commentaries and deleted scenes, the two things Warner seems to ignore the most on DVD releases.

I agree, the S2RDC cover art is absolutely awful. What were they thinking...! However, I'm glad just to be getting it at last after all these years.
I believe Region 2 will have the DC included as a 3-disc S-II edition so may opt for this instead. Particularly as I dont care for Superman IV and so that I can avoid having that godawful-cover-single-disc version in my collection.
ps. At least include Marlon Brando somewhere on the front/back of the Donner Cut. Geez...

So everyone's dissapointed about the art-work...
At least we're getting the Donner version! Some of us would be satisfied if we got it (the movie) in a white paper case-slip

I agree with tomreagan. As far as the Donner Cut goes, Warners are doing this not necessarily because they think it will be successful for the masses, but because of the demand of the fans over the years. And unlike a certain other fan-based release, just be grateful this is anamorphic widescreen. Unless you'd prefer non-anamorphic with a pretty cover...

As far as the Donner cover goes, some Production Assistant at the Warner lot could have posed for that cover. Absolutely ridiculous!!
Probably a reflection of their current opinions of 'standard' DVD. Which is a shame.

The only thing I "hate" about the Donner DVD is the font. It looks like an unauthorized documentary or something... But I'm fine with the the graphic - simple, classic.
And about the other four, they obviously wanted consistently matching graphics specifically for the set, and being "the Christopher Reeve Collection" - he needs to be the focus, so whatever. We got the original poster artwork from the first release. And the box set cover art with Reeve is frickin' BEAUTIFUL, so in my opinion, that makes up for all four (at least). Bottom line is, they're just COVERS!!!
We should be THANKING Warner Bros., over and over, for releasing the Donner cut SOLEY on the fans' demand. Warner RULES for doing stuff like this, so quit yer b***hin!!!!
And about the 14 Disc set, does it really matter, now? Isn't everthing released seperately anyhow? (Superman Returns 2 disc set, the documentary, Donner cut, supergirl, and max fleischer's toons, right? 6 + these 8... - and the toons are now on these DVDs, so... i'm guessing it ain't happening)

not bad. The Donner Cut cover art is nothing too much to complain about. On the whole, I like that art better than what they chose for the 4 Superman films.
Am I the only one who thinks the Donner Cut cover art isnt THAT bad? I love simple artwork and this is pretty damn simple, it's not too busy with other actors or a still from the movie, it's just Clark opening up his suit to reveal the big S which I find is kinda sweet! I get what you're all saying with the font but just looking at the artwork, I kinda like it. Much better than those horrible covers for the other movies. And don't get me started on the artwork for Superman Returns!
I'm REALLY crossing my fingers for a R1 13-14 disc boxset. If not well I'm buying all those movies. I never bought the old boxset even when it was around 25$ for the whole thing, I always knew something better (extra features anyways!) would come along.

I own the first 2 "Supe" movies & I have "Superman III" on laserdisc (yes, laserdisc! I bought it a few years back for five bucks brand new). "Superman IV" & "Supergirl" are not welcome in my DVD collection because I don't have time for movies that suck. I'll pick up the re-releases to the first 2 "Superman" films as well Donner's original cut to "Superman II".
The DVD artwork for Donner's "SII" is the worst artwork for a major DVD release from a major film studio - ever. The head of Warner Home Video should be fired - NOW! Anyone who stands up for this artwork will look like a bucktoothed bufoon. My four year old niece can draw better artwork than this! Nice man boobies Superman! "WB" isn't for Warner Brothers, it's for "We Blow" or better yet "Won't Buy".

Look, I honestly understand all the countless complaints about these subpar (to put it very lightly) covers, but come ON! Enough bickering, I personally cannot wait to get my hands on these sets! The DVDs themselves are always what count, and while nice-looking cover art is always a plus, of course, it in no way, shape or form prevents me from buying the DVDs!
That said, the only things that IS making me not click the "preorder" button immediately is the whole 13/14-disc set thing. IS it or ISN'T it happening in the U.S.? I just hope they announce it before November 28!

We need a fan-based cover design contest so that we, the fans, can submit worthy artwork.
There has to be a ton of us with desktop publishing capabilities to put together covers that fans would be proud to place within their DVD collections. Holy freakin' cow has Warner ever dropped a bombshell on us here. Un-freakin'-believable.

Warner has just gotten flat out lazy producing their DVD's. First, they start eliminating audio commentaries, now they are putting together these amateurish DVD covers.
As far as the Donner cover goes, some Production Assistant at the Warner lot could have posed for that cover. Absolutely ridiculous!!

Superman II: Donnor cut loks like a mocumentary cover art. Are you joking. Please WB fire the staff of high schoolers that you have and give some recent graduate student some work. I work for cheap! If not me, please hire a blind person they could do a better job.
Can't DC comics say anything afterall this is THEIR key franchise flagship character here. Wouldn't their repuration be also on the line????

agreed, exactly what I meant.
WOW! That cannot be the artwork for the Richard Donner Cut! What happened to that cool art from the trailer!!! I'll still pick it up, but I am very disappointed.
that can't be the cover art for the donner cut! warner's released an online video showcasing this collection and the cover art for the donner cut looked ten times better than this garbage! warner's should seriously consider firing their graphic designer. I could pull better work out of my ass... really I could.
Folks, we gotta do something about this. As few of us as there might be out here, we have to some how send a message to WB that this c**p is not going to fly!!!! I mean come on, this is absolutely horrible. The only thing missing is Lois' arms coming from the back of Supes and the Donnor cut artwork would be an almost exact match for Lois and Clark. No disrespect to the show (I enjoyed seasons 1 through 3 but hated 4 when it turned into a soap), but this is the best they could do?

Yeah, each version of the Christopher Reeve Superman films have both a commentary and deleted footage. It's kinda disheartening to see that Warner didn't put the effort to give "Superman III" and "Superman IV" 5.1 remixes, maligned as they are, it would give fans of those films something else to look forward to (aside from a commentary, deleted footage and a nice keep case). They just gave both versions of "Superman II" Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes, but never thought to do the same for the last 2 films.
And I don't think the WB made the effort to give the "Superman" films a new digital transfer, which was also another selling point of the "Batman Anthology" set. The Donner cut of "Superman II" has been restored, but I'm not sure if the other films have been given a digital cleaning or if they're the same transfers ported over from the 2001 releases.

yea, I really dont care for any of these new restored 6 (4 superman films, the donner cut, supergirl) dvds releases. very dissapointed overall. but the sets should be good at least
Superman Artowkr: Completely missed opportunity.
I like the back of the Donner cut as there's continuity with the others, but the front is just terrible. Looks like a cheap 1980s VHS cover. Is it trying to evoke nostalgia with that kind of style? I'm glad us Brits are getting the Donner cut packaged as a 3-disc set of Superman II, and also bundled in with the Christopher Reeve set. I think that's the only way I'll be getting these, as the only way these things will look presentable is gonna be in that box.
In a (probably fruitless) attempt to discuss a different aspect of these releases, I just want to say that in terms of content it's great to see these releases getting some love the way the Batman films did last year. I just signed up for an account just so I could comment on how much I hate the Donner DVD coverart! It's so bleak looking, like something fit for a Tim Burton film. Not to mention the fonts and over-use of blacks makes it look like a hastily put together bootleg. As an artist myself, I couldn't be more disappointed with this presentation. The other covers are generally fine by me, and I absolutely love the box set artwork for all of the movies. I suppose as fans, we should be fortunate to get the Donner cut finally so any additions gripes might sound ungrateful...but still...
Prety sucky, but not as bad as the other 4. The font makes the cover look like a bootleg.
I don't hate that Donner cut artwork nearly as much as the other four - but it's still not very good. This is the release I'm most excited for this fall. Can't wait until the 28'th.
Warner Brothers is collectively taking a massive dump on Superman fans with these dvds (on the outside at least). That Donner cover has got to be one of the worst, if not THE worst dvd cover for a movie. It reeks of B movie filth (which hopefully it isn't). The content on these discs better be worthwhile, because so far, this set is just taking all the wrong steps.
THESE ARE WITHOUT A DOUBT SOME OF THE WORST COVERS I HAVE EVER SEEN???
HOW MUCH TIME AND MONEY WENT INTO MAKING THESE COVERS, FROM THE LOOKS OF IT, 5 MINS AND $3!
WARNER SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!

All, I can say is thank God for custom cover art. I'm sure the denizens at the custom cover art sites will come up with something that will do all these films justice.
I really hate the art for the Donner cut. I thought I saw a cover from a trailer for the new collection that basically had Superman flying over the earth or something like that. I prefer that art much more. I wonder why Warner changed it? Oh, yeah, because it was good (the same reason why they're not using the one sheet for Superman Returns). Come on Warner, give us some good artwork.
Also, looking at the back covers for the new Special Editions, am I the only one who thinks the backs are in kinda the same style as last year's Batman Special Editions. And I'm a bit mad they didn't do a DTS soundtrack. I know Warner hasn't done many DTS tracks but this is very deserving of one, heck when one of there rare ones was on the Ace Ventura set. What are they thinking "Hmmm, we can do DTS on Ace Ventura or Superman... which one would benefit more.... Oh, Ace Ventura really needs one but Superman can live without one"
Would someone please knock some sense into Warner.

Donner didn't get the chance to shoot his version of the scene where Lois Lane reveals Superman's secret identity with blank bullets, but there were two screen tests shot featuring Reeve and Kidder, and that scene will be cut into the Donner cut.
There won't be any heavy use of CGI, it will be used sparingly and probably for long-distance shots. According to an official source, only 90 visual effects shots will be present. One site speculated that any new scenes involving Zod, Ursa, and Non would probably be recreated by the use of rotoscoping and motion-capture (as well as new ADR from Terrence Stamp and Sarah Douglas).
However, 80% of the footage in the new cut is Donner's (a small bit of it will be deleted scenes from the first movie) and the remaining 20% will be Lester's footage in order to maintain continuity. So most of it will be the way Donner intended it to be.
Also, while Michael Thau was editing the Donner cut together, he consulted the original 1978 Mankiewitz script (and sometimes he had to go back and edit entire scenes from scratch!). He also brought Donner in to make suggestions and get his approval of how the cut was turning out. In the end, it may not exactly look the way Donner wanted it in 1978, but I say it sure as heck was the original way he envisioned it. (And I think he is glad that his version is finally being made available to the public.)

Newly discovered footage my arse. Try footage they sat on for years 'cause they fell out with Brando.
They take films with the potential for good cover art and give us this...
Oh man, just when you think it can't get any worse, and now this!
That SM2RDC cover is awful, oh man, if they want to release these with c**ppy covers, let them. I don't have to buy and nobody else does either!

The cover art on the Donner cut, makes it look seedy and so 1980s.
I'm not the big movie fan, but, not to where I just have to have the extended versions and 2 discs this and thats with more features. I just like to sit down and watch the film. If its got special features, fine, if not, that's fine, too. So, since the Donner Cut isn't a biggy for me, I'm just going to buy the 8-disc set and Supergirl. I just hope the picture quality of Supergirl will be way better on DVD than my c**p VHS version.

Fix the font and positions and you have an awesome Superman 2 Donner Cut cover
I will not look gift horses in the mouth, but that font for the Donner Cut is horrible. Why?!?!
Aside from the boxset art all the covers are pretty poor in my eyes. WB usually puts out nice covers for it's comic book films too, weird why these aren't so good.
Hideous, hideous, hideous. The original cover of the Donner cut of "Superman II" as shown on the official trailer looked a lot better. And that cover (which wasn't that great) makes this one look like a veritable masterpiece.
Still, nice to see that Warner made the effort to get the Donner cut out to the public, and it's nice to see that the Donner cut also has a Dolby Digital 5.1 track like the first two films did.

good lord!
no you are not alone. that Richard Donner cut DVD graphic is absolutely horrible. Who is doing the design work at WB? I've noticed this many times on their titles, just horrible stuff. it doesn't even seem to "fit" with the other DVD's either. Surely, there is more artwork or posters to pull from?? It doesn't even look like a theatrical movie, more like a documentary DVD of some sorts. . . .
HORRIBLE WB!!! I can see what you were "trying" to achieve, but your execution of it, was terrible. Higher a new graphic artist!!!!

Not that it really matters in the end though, 'cause the content is all that matters and I'm foaming at the mouth with anticipation of getting this.

The font used is not great. Otherwise, I don't have much of a problem with the DC cover.
Why hate the Donner Cut artwork? It is leagues better then the other covers.

The news item clearly states that, like the Donner cut of Superman II, Supergirl is not included in the set. Nothing is certain yet, don't get your hopes up. most people are expecting it to be announced with Superman Returns or closely after.

Warner certainly sc*ewed us in the U.S. on the Superman releases this fall. Its a shame they didnt put the Donner cut of Superman II and the 2 disk Superman Returns into this box set. Shame. I would have definitely bought that set. Warner is releasing some horrible DVD's and overpricing them (V for Vendetta deserved much better and so did I for the extra $ I spent on the 2-Disk) and they should get their stuff together.
Like the box set artwork.
I will have to buy the boxset just so I can have it's box to cover the absolute c**p the individual covers are. I think the cover for the set is fitting and a welcomed improvement over the individual box art.
Beyond that, I will have to turn around and shill out bucks to get the Donner cut. And they want to make us feel bad for illegal copying. My response to the industry is "stop making us jump through damn hoops like this to get a product you know we want!!!"

I was expecting something more for the box set design... the Batman Anthology boxset was a real improvement in design over the old boxset (both in individual disc sleeve design and box design)... but this leaves me cold as the old silver Superman boxset is at least a nice design... this one is subpar at best.
Okay, now we have high-res art for the Christopher Reeve Collection, now where's the high-res art for the Donner cut of "Superman II"? And how come "Superman IV" is the only Superman re-release that has the back cover art available?
Not to mention Warners need to finalize the specs and art for "Superman Returns" (hopefully they've changed that ugly art and added a commentary) and put it back up...

Nice box covers..... WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!!!! WHERE IS THE RICHARD DONNER CUT OF SUPERMAN II?!?!?!?!?! IT'S NOT LISTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, it looks like I was in error, and they are releasing all of the movies individually, as well as in an eight disk set. I appreciate that they were considerate of the fans and let them choose which movies to buy.
The one thing that Warners did carry over to these from the Bats SE's is the lettering used on the spines and the top banner. But other than that, they lost all sense of what the blazes looks good! The colors are absolutely c**p and the choice of pictures is even worse.
How hard would it to think about this.......Superman is a DC comic, so is Batman. Pretty much, the crowd that is going to purchase the Bat SE's are going to be in the same demographic as the Supes fans. OK, now lets assume that since you have two movies here that are from the same genre, same comic company and relatively the same fanbase (I know, will be different, but still.....) why not make the Supes SE's mirror the Bat SE's in style and presentation? I mean, what a cool thought for the collectors out there that enjoy both of these franchises. Guess that was too hard to think of by the boys and girls in the creative department at Warners.

I sincerely hope the powers that be at WHV see the comments posted here regarding the artwork, and make a change. Wow, for such cherished films (well, the first two at least - although I like "Superman III" very much) you would think they would go above and beyond the consumers expectations and make these covers beautiful. They did a great job on the "Batman" series. It wasn't hard - they just used the poster art! Kind of a big 'duh', if you ask me. Well, studios have been known to make changes to cover art before, so let's keep our fingers crossed. Still, REALLY shocked by WHV. I expect more from them. They were the first studio that insisted on releasing DVD's in the anamorphic format as 'The Norm'. So disapointed in them.
If that artwork for the boxset provided by Jonno is the R2 artwork, I absolutely can't wait for it! All Warners need to do now is a box set for R2 of all the special edition Batman films, but I daresay that'll come once The Dark Knight hits DVD.
I'll skip the boxset since I'm satistifed with the ones already out but I'll definitely buy Supergirl and maybe the Donner cut of Superman.
Those covers are essentially completely horrific. They look like a hack photoshop job by a 10 year old. Was there something wrong with the poster art?
Why OH WHY do they keep c**pping all over the covers of DVDs they expect us to buy?
And what happened to the 14 disc set? Has that completely vanished now? What about the day and date HD DVD and BD releases?
Matthew Clayton wrote: And Jonno2006, the art for that Superman box set is for R2, not R1. It sure is purty though.
Ah ha. So as per usual, R1 gets screwed on box sets. Or maybe we'll get it eventually, once we've bought this set already.

OH MY GOD, the artwork for this set is stinking up my computer. Horrible, just horrible. Lex was only bald for about 10 seconds at the end of the first film. WHY would they show him that way on the cover? I have modest design skills and I could produce INFINITELY better artwork than this. Really disappointing.
*cries*
WTF are we R1? Chopped liver? I've said it before and I'll say it again, why the hell can't all DVDs be created equal? R1 ALWAYS gets the shaft when it comes to sweet boxsets. Can't take it anymore!

All four Superman movies will have plenty of extra footage. The Donner cut of "Superman II" will have some unused footage left over from "Superman the Movie" and will also use two different screen tests cut together to form the scene how Lois proves Clark is Superman (the scene was never shot by Donner, but he decided to cut the screen tests together in order to get the scene), with blank bullets. The Donner cut will also have some new exterior outdoor shots and some new CGI as well. However, I don't know if the additional footage on the Donner cut that never made it back in was alternate takes Donner shot but never used, or what.
I think all the fans should be happy that all the Chris Reeve films will have a commentary and deleted footage. There could've been more featurettes and documentaties, but I'm happy with the DVD treatment these films got. (Hopefully, those 45 minutes cut from "Superman IV" will surface on this DVD.)

I'm a Superman fan and I have to say that Superman IV is dreadful. Apparently there were at least 45 mins cut from the film and it shows as it doesn't really make much sense. Even if the other footage was added I would still imagine that it would still be bad.
Superman 3 is average, I suppose there are some redeeming factors in it, like we see Smallville (and the fact that Lana Lang is played by Annette O'Toole who plays Martha Kent in Smallville).
I'll get the Donner cut although it can't be considered as the true version as it conflicts with Superman 1 (Donner made changes to it knowing that he wouldn't have control over Superman 2) and Superman Returns.

Can anybody tell me if Superman IV is woth watching at all? I mean, shouldn't this be one of the worst movies ever? Anyways, I tend to think it's always funny to watch a series ruin itself, like the Batman series for instance. (of course now both Batman and Superman have been brought up to the right path again)
But wtf, I'll get the whole collection, just for the fun of it.

Looks like Warners are doing what they did last year with the Batman releases and going for continuity over individual quality. With any luck though, us folks over here in R2 land will be treated to a different and far cooler set of covers, as with the Batman special editions.

Then I'll buy the ALL separately (if they come cheaper) and then order a custom metal case from ebay from a guy who makes them !

The deluxe edition art is really bad.
I thought these were promotional temp covers at first.
I hope to c**p they are...

Ridiculously bad covers I can forgive. But what a massive slap in the face to Richard Pryor. Whoever left him off the S3 case should be ashamed of themselves. And I don't even LIKE Superman 3!
I'm certainly planning on buying the the Donner Cut, which I had nearly given up on ever being released. And I am very grateful to this site for posting the artwork. But this 8 disk Superman set is nothing of the kind.
The first Superman DVD release was quite disappointing. This set is just another attempt to screw the customers out of as much money as possible, while providing very little that the customers really want or don't already own. I wanted the original theatrical version of Superman, without them screwing with the soundtrack. I'm not going to pay a fortune just to get what I expected when I bought the previous set (which was only available as a 4 disk set, again screwing customers who didn't want to be forced to buy all the movies).
Well, they beat out George Lucas in the contest to screw the customers the most (Though I expect George Lucas will be at it again next year).
One other thing is that the DVD covers are damn pedestrian. Couldn't they have made something better? And while I am no big fan of Superman 3 (I don't hate it either) how could they make a cover without Richard Prior? He was one of the headliners. I cannot even name the actors pictured on the cover.

The cover art isn't great, but by all means doesn't suck, but the DVD qualities will definitley make up for that. At least for 1 and 2, that's all I plan on buying. I don't plan on seeing 3 and 4 but I'm sure I'll eventually end up netflix-ing them both.
What can I say, not bad stuff.
those are c**p ass covers
Why in the world can they not just use the original movie poster artwork instead of making some c**ppy photoshop covers. I don't mind Superman 1 and 2. But the 3 & 4, YUCK. And HEY, where is Richard Prior on Superman 3 art? That is screwed up.
I hope they use the KICK ASS poster of Superman flying for the movie poster for the DVD artwork, That is an AMAZING poster.

Why is it that these 4 and 2-disc sets from Warner remind me so much of the new Batman 2-disc sets with the way they are packaged and advertised. I was hoping for something better from Warner, a little more creative! Though, these aren't bad, the covers are nice.

Very true Matt, the disks are what counts and that is why I will pick these up for sure. As you mention, Warners usually does a good job with their covers. Though I wasn't totally thrilled with the Batman SE covers, they atleast kept the original artwork and just added borders. Here, looks like they ran out of time and just threw together whatever they wanted.
Covers are not a sale killer for me, but damn, part of the fun of collecting DVD's is to showcase the collection. These covers will remain "covered" in my display case

Where's Richard Pryor on the Superman III cover. Anyway, the covers are okay I guess, just wondering where's the art for the Donner Cut. And when are they going to announce Superman Returns, which I assume is still set for November 28 as well.
Although it's not extruded, look at how the "S" shield on Reeves chest for the Superman II cover is actually the Brandon Routh "S" design. Weird.
Hell, even the worst "fan" mockups look better than this Photoshop-tutorial looking c**p.
Hell, even the worst "fan" mockups look better than this Photoshop-tutorial looking c**p.
From the DVD trailer for the Special Editions, the cover of the Richard Donner cut of "Superman II" has an enlarged picture of Chris Reeve (from the 2001 cover and the top half of the 2006 edition) superimposed over a picture of the Earth with the words "Superman II: The Richard Donner Director's Cut" and at the bottom it says "Newly digitally remastered and restored" (or something to that extent).
And the art for the boxed set of the Christopher Reeve box set has a picture of the top half of Chris Reeve in the Superman suit. I don't know why Warners has made high-res versions of the box set and the Donner cut yet, maybe they're planning to release it when they announce "Superman Returns". Why does Superman have a slight tilt to his right on the Superman II cover? Disappointed...Warner usually has great cover art for their discs and utilizes the original art more than any other studio. Oh well, not that it really matters so long as the discs themselves have some quality stuff.
These covers are horrible! Absolutely horrible. Still going to pick these up, but man, I could do these kinds of covers with my own photoshop editor.

Yeah, I don't Warner spent as much time on these as they did the Batman DVDs. At least those were minimal and classy (only a metallic border around the original artwork with the words "2 Disc Special Edition" ) compared to the "busy" look of those horribly Photoshopped Superman SEs. Heck, even the two separate versions of "Batman Begins" used two of the posters as the cover art and it was beautiful.
I also wish the DVD cover of "Superman Returns" will have the beautiful artwork of Superman hovering over the Earth, partially in silhouette, arms outstretched. It's simple, elegant, and Warner won't have to spend time on a tacky Photoshop job like they did on the first four "Superman" movies. (Or at the very least, use one of the posters used for promoting the film.)

Good freaking lord! Did the same guy who designed the prequels cover art do this? This suck! Gotta get busy with some customs.
WTF.... Why isn't Pryor even on the s**tty Superman 3 cover? I really hope Superman Returns isn't like those covers, I would hope they use the poster of him looking down on Earth as the artwork. WB are the worst for continuity (at least in the UK), none of the Smallville box set spines match up, and now they are releasing Superman TV series in those mini half width amaray type cases, instead of using digipack. Also even though all the Lois and Clark TV sets have been released in the same year (in the UK) I would have thought that there would have continuity there, but they've changed their design half way through too.

Bleh, not horrible nor great but still needs alot of improvement! I really don't get why today's DVD cover art has to be so 'busy' we dont need every single actor on the cover nor a scene from the movie in a corner somewhere. I think I speak for about 97% of us DVD collectioners and say that the simpler the better right? I love simple yet elegant dvd covers!

Yeah, the heads at the bottom are not necessary and a complete distraction. Terrible covers.
Yeah, the artwork for all four movies is definitely uninspired... personally, I think Warner should've kept the original artwork used for the 2001 releases and just put "4 Disc Special Edition" or "Special Edition", etc. on them. Just changing the color scheme and the three supporting characters for each successive cover just isn't going to cut it. Sure, they're supposed to be part of the Christopher Reeve Collection, but they don't have to look so tacky and uninspired (they look Photoshopped, if anything).
I hope that the cover art of the Donner cut of "Superman II" will be totally different than the art for the 2-disc edition. And I pray Warner doesn't screw the pooch on the artwork for "Superman Returns"... which it seems that they will.

The 2001 "Superman II" release only had Dolby 2.0 stereo surround audio, the 2006 edition will have a Dolby 5.1 remix. And considering that the Donner cut of "Superman II" got a proper video and audio restoration, chances are we'll get new digital transfers for the other films as well.
And I really don't get why everyone is complaining about the Max Fleischer cartoons included on the set. Warners said prior to the release of "Superman Returns" that the 14-disc box set would include the Fleischer cartoons and considering the fact they sc**pped it for a smaller 8-disc set, I'm not that surprised. It's not like it's an entirely different animated cartoons -- it's Superman cartoons on a Superman-related release (c'mon, other Warners releases had related Looney Tunes cartoons included with the films, I don't see what the big fuss is about).
Although I am disappointed that no new featurettes created for the theatrical cuts of each movie. I would've looked forward to see a documentary along the lines of "The Cinematic Saga of the Dark Knight" included on each film. And I think there was going to be a featurette/documentary on the production of "Superman II", in which there'd be new interviews with actors Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halleran, as well as composer Ken Thorne. (Or will that be on the Donner cut of "Superman II"?)
Cool, 5.1 sound is a HUGE plus. So I'll pick it up just for that reason. I just hope ALL the documentaries on the 2000 disc are in this 4 disc set.
As far as the Mole man TV movie and the cartoons. They have nothing to do with the superman movies and are just being thrown in to make it a 4 disc set, Mole man is already in the season 1 set of the superman tv show and the old cartoons have been released MANY times on there own. Why pay for something superman collectors already have.
I'll propbably order the the 8 disc set since I didn't get the orginal bare bones 2000 release of 3 & 4.
I just can't waite! I feel like a child waiting for Christmas!
The Superman I has like 3 special features a disc, you can put all of them in one disc and make it a 2-DISC edition.
We will post it as soon as we get it.
Is the artwork coming soon?
The Donner Superman 2 for me - I already have a superman 2 disc special edition and the limited Supergirl DVD....

Super!
Matt, when are we going to get the artwork? Will we get it when Warners officially announce "Superman Returns"?

There is the actual theatrical release of Superman which has not been available up to this point. That alone is a buying point for me.

I could care less about the old cartoons and superman TV extras. They have nothing to do with the movies and are pretty lame extras in my opinion. Added just so you can say 4 DISC special edition.

I have the Anchor Bay 2 disc limited to 50,000. Got it at Suncoast used for $10. No need for a new bare bones version of this film for me. Just to bad there was a flaw in the pressing and it will only play on certain DVD players. My Panasonic will play it but not my Sony.
I am all for getting this. I am just a little annoyed with the donner cut seperate while in R2 it is included in a 3 disc set. I will wait for the artwork from both regions and then decide. Either way, can't wait.
Somewhere else I read that in the region 2 set, the Donner cut of Superman 2 is included in the set.
Ah well, I`ll wait for reviews to come out and see wich one is the best one :D

I'm pretty sure that since that was a studio produced making-of that they'd have to license it from Sony since Tri-Star originally released Supergirl.

I need to know what the heck is going on with the HD DVDs. We keep getting updates on this new assortment of DVDs while the 14 disc set that was supposed to debut on DVD, HD DVD and BD seems to have dissapeared. Bill Hunt from the digital bits tells me his sources say they are still working on HD versions, but that they may or may not be in the previously announced edition.
So please, somebody, find out what the heck is going on.

The last two discs on the S1 set have literally nothing that hasn't been released on dvd before, save for the vintage special. Where's the Reeve tribute? The updated retrospective? The additional featurettes? All of that was speculative to begin with, but at least give us something new, Warners. Really the only value added is the theatrical cut. The original disc was pretty great but it's still over 5 years old! Surely there must be something new to add.
Definitely going to ponder this one. . .

I'll be picking up the 4 disc Superman and the Donner cut of SII. That's it, along with Superman Returns.

WB, you're starting to slip up. You're messing up the Superman on DVD campaign I thought was gonna be so spectacular
I'm still sticking with the Donner cut of Superman II ONLY. I think a lot of people are going to do the same.
It's not 9 disks... 4 for Superman: The Movie, 2 for Superman II, 1 for Superman III and 1 for Superman IV... That makes 8. Supergirl and Superman II: The Richard Donner cut are released serperately.

It's padding the set and a waste of time/money.
That's exactly what I've been saying all along. It's no disrespect to those classic pieces of Superman media, but they are Christopher Reeve Superman. Take the serials, and release them in their own nice set with some retrospective featurettes. There's no reason to "pad" this set with them. I see two whole discs I have no desire to own. Again, no disrespect to them, but I would buy this set to own the Christopher Reeve Superman films in their finest DVD presentation, yet. Because of this padding, I'm still uncertain of how I will approach my consideration of purchasing this set.

Since I dont own any of the 5 films mentioned, I will pick all of them up. I was waiting for a release like this.
In regards to whether Supergirl's worth a watch (not sure which version to recommened, as there's only one here in the UK), the music is good, it's got Peter O'Toole in it and he does a decent job, and as has been mentioned, the flying scenes, especially at the start, are definitely worth checking out.
On the other hand, it's definitely the poor cousin to Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie, in terms of story, and especially in terms of villains. What's that shadow-monster all about?!?
But it's worth a watch, it's always been a guilty pleasure of mine too, and there's worse ways to pass a couple of hours.

To straighten out the record on Supergirl:
Anchor Bay initially released 2 different DVD sets. One was a single disc with the 124-minute international version, plus an audio commentary, behind-the scenes documentary from 1984, trailers, storyboards, and actor bios. The other was a "Limited Edition" which included the International version, and on a second-disc a 138-minute "Director's Cut".
Later on, Anchor Bay released the "Director's Cut" as a single disc.
As far as I am aware, they did not release the U.S. Theatrical Version on DVD.

Supergirl is the numero uno guilty pleasure in my DVD collection. It's nowhere near as good as the first two Superman movies, but it can be a fun watch, depending on your mindset. You need to be aware that some of the dialog is just clunky, and Faye Dunaway (as the villain, Selena) chews the scenery. Also, don't expect it to be faithful to the comics origin of Supergirl - because it definitely is not. That said, Kara's aerial ballet at the beginning of the film is at least worth the price of a rental.

Perhaps so they can plug it as a 4-disc set and put it in the same league as Lord of the Rings and Titanic for 4 discs per film? I know some mates of mine are impressed by the number of discs in a set, regardless of what's actually on them.

Thanks for clearing that up Matt, just wondered why it was included in the press-release really.
What is the retored scenes for "Superman"? Does thismean no deleted scenes?
Supergirl is not part of the eight-disc Christopher Reeve set. The only mention of it in the press release is what is listed above and after the details on the new Reeve/Superman discs/set.
I have the Superman DVD box sex. The only one I am really interested in is the Superman II : Richard Donner cut. I have the Supergirl Internation 2 Disk Special Edition with both versions of the film. The International version of Supergirl is better than the US version
they still don't say which version of supergirl it is
Sorry, I'm confused, it says it's an 8-disc box-set, listing the four-disc Superman, the 2-disc Superman II, and single-disc versions of Superman III and IV. How come there's details for Supergirl too? Is it actually a 9-disc set? Sorry, not trying to be awkward or anything, but would be nice if someone could clarify this. This sounds like a great set, but the R2 one sounds better as you get the 3-disc Superman II which has the Donner Cut too.
Supergirl has a commentary from Szwarc and Bosco? I would be willing to bet that's ported over from the Anchor Bay release of the International version - which I have. No sense in double-dipping here.
I think Region 2 is getting the two cuts of Superman II together in one set.
I'm definitely getting the first two. But, why couldn't they package the Donner cut with the 2-disc edition together???
They say it is an 8 disc box set. Supergirl would make it nine. So, I think the inclusion of Supergirl is a mistake. Besides, it is the "Christopher Reeve Collection".
This is only an updated spec list -- will the Donner cut of "Superman II" have a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, as well as "Superman III" and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace"? I take that since artwork for the set is coming shortly, I can only guess that "Superman Returns" will be announced soon.
Can't wait.
Can't wait.
It is possible I will get this for the add'l footage in Sup3, and since I dont have Sup4. I was getting the Donner's cut regardless, and more stuff to watch about Sup1. Supergirl, I already have.
Time will tell, odds are I will get it, I suppose.
Now, are we ever going to get a sequal to Superman Returns...?

Oh goody. I'm the first one. Will definitely order this!! I knew Supergirl is included. Strange though, because this is the Superman Ultimate Boxed Set.
