Texas Chain Saw Massacre (US - BD RA)
Dark Sky Films officially announces their first Blu-ray release, and it's a good'un...
Title: Texas Chain Saw Massacre (IMDb)
Starring: Gunner Hanson
Released: 30th September 2008
SRP: 29.98
Further Details:
The fans have known for a while, but Dark Sky sent me the official release info and cover art for their first Blu-ray release – a little gem called The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Based on the release info and the cover art it appears that this release features the same extras that Dark Sky's previous Ultimate Edition, plus one new featurette. There're no specifics on the video, but based on the DVD release I'm guessing we can expect a full 1080p production. The disc will feature:

Seconded. Other than that, the artwork's not half-bad.

Imma get this.
I wonder.....is it on a 50GB disc? I sure hope so with all those special features crammed on it.
bloody hell, i have four different dvds of this film, and now i have to get the blu ray
I'm mystified as to why movies like this are making it to Blu-Ray. Sure, it's a classic and deserves to be seen by all, but Hi-Def? It was filmed on 16mm, and the DVD looked better than it did when it was first released, FFS!
WOW you people would buy chit if it had a nice look, huh?
I mean how retarded are you? The movie was filmed on 16mm. How freakin good could it possibly look in HD, chitheads? Its jerkoffs like you that keep them re-issueing the same movie 80 times. Cuz you guys will keep buying it.
Its the same movie released the last 50 on reg DVD. I doubt you'll be able to see Gunnars nose hair.

No reason for me to upgrade on this one. Blu-Ray would hurt this movie and I already own the previous ultimate edition.
I think this is one Blu-ray release that might not benefit the film. The sharpness will reveal the faults of the film from the fake blood to the prosthetics etc. I think the previous DVD release works just fine. The grittiness of the dirts on the print and the indistinguishable look of the film makes the DVD look better. IMO.

Does that mean you won't be buying it then

i dont really care for blu-ray discs... i keep my regular DVD collection growing... REGULAR DVDs ROCK MAN!!!
since New Line is now giving us ELF on Blu-ray, they should consider giving us the 2003 remake of the Texas Chainsaw. That has to sound amazing in DTS-HD 7.1, that being said the SD DVD has a great DTS 6.1 track.

why do you waste your money and triple dip, one version is good enough

People don't get it. Anything can look good on Blu-Ray, as long as the time and effort is put in. It may not look crystal clear but just because it was shot on 16mm doesn't mean improvements can't be made and it can't look shinier in HD.
The point, really, of HD formats for home video is to allow the film more space so that it can be displayed in higher resolution, NOT so that it can look crystal clear. This is the kind of thinking that results in DNR. Just because something isn't demo material doesn't mean it should be passed over and/or ignored on HD.

I'm usually the first guy to complain about spending the time overcleaning gritty horror films, but I was very impressed with Dark Sky's last treatment of TCM. I'm hoping for the exact same transfer without the compression noises, but I do fear that they'll lighten things that shouldn't be lightened or some things will become more clear then they really should be.

beacause each edition has different transfers & different special features. one version is good enough if you only have a 14" tv and stereo sound, but if you have a 42" widescreen 1080p tv, old releases look like s**t, and new re-mastered versions look better as they are scanned at a higher bitrate.

Seconded. Other than that, the artwork's not half-bad.
With today's movie-going audience and kids who don't know the difference, I'd say it's absolutely necessary.
By the by, I only saw this about a year ago on IFC, and it was terrifying. Better than 99% of the torture porn that gets churned out today.

When this was first up for pre-order at Familyvideo a month ago, it was priced at $8 and change.

I might ask the same question of you.
Standard DVD resolution is still below even that of 16mm film, but the resolution of 16mm is roughly close to that of the 1080p output that Blu-ray delivers. As long as the transfer from film to digital was handled properly (the DVD release from Dark Sky is a good sign) and the encoding is done well, this disc will be as close to watching The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in its native format as possible without digging out a projector.
If you're going to slag anyone make sure you know what it is you're talking about first...retard.

No HD audio = NO BUY!! Damnit why do they keep releasing Blu-ray's with Dolby Digital 5.1??!!?? Son of a b***h!

It's only 83 minutes long and has no lossless audio. I seriously doubt a BD50 is needed. The extras will be SD too. I bet it's a BD25.

There's absolutely nothing for lossless audio to work with. Sure it's technically better and would be nice to see but I cannot see it sounding much different to the DD5.1.
Besides the original Mono audio is all that's needed here. There's not enough to even really justify 5.1 period.

Exactly. It's essential it says Original and even Remastered on the cover.

YESS!! Buy for me.

This is one film that's definitely not meant to look "shinier". It's a grim, grimy movie that would lose a lot if it was cleaned up to look pretty. Unless you've mistaken this for the remake, there's no reason for people to try and mess with it - the film works perfectly on a 16mm print!

Again, this isn't a glossy Hollywood production - it was filmed in mono on 16mm! How much different do you think there can be between 5.1 and lossless when the damn thing was filmed in one channel sound?

I love me a good hrror film, and appreciate the film, I got it once on DVD, and it was enough for my collection. Fo some reason, this movie, to me was just not that good, regardless of the cult status. I know I am in the minority, but I prefer the re-make.
