Is it odd that I liked both the original and "Overnight"? Looking forward to seeing this on video - had no time to see it in theaters.
I might rent it for Julie Benz's version of Detective Brenda Johnson. Come on, looking at the clips of her in the movie, it looks like she's imitating Kyra Sedgwick from "The Closer."
I didn't care for the first movie. It just left a bad taste in my mouth... I'm going to leave it at that. But I'll rent the sequel for Benz and Connolly.

Wow, that`s quick. hasn`t even been released in theaters over here...
"I specifically said that his being an asshole in and of itself is not only irrelevant, but is to be expected considering his background."
If it's so irrelevant, then why bring it up? It seems like every negative reviewer of the film mentions "Overnight". I mean, why be like everybody else? Set yourself apart from the rest of the pack.
"There are a million other more important attributes that contribute to a relationship than taste in movies. But given we're on a a site called DVDActive, I'd say it's a top factor we have to go on."
I believe that's your whole problem. You shouldn't judge anyone on what they like/dislike. Opinions differ, it doesn't get any simpler than that. What you should focus on, is the person's overall conduct towards yourself and others.
"That, and the passive agressive form in which you referred to me as "the above poster".
Kind of like how you implied that my logic has occasional lapses in it.

So what if the guy 'was' an a**hole? That doesn't take away quality from the film itself. Not to mention, it's been a decade since the first movie was released and people are allowed to change. I'm sure Duffy has mellowed out a lot since then.
For f**ks sake... can anyone actually read posts and discern obvious statements from them? I specifically said that his being an asshole in and of itself is not only irrelevant, but is to be expected considering his background. My problem and point is that he couldn't curb his douchitude for the purpose of getting his movie made. As a result, he has only two films to his name: Boondock Saints I and II. Apparently James Cameron is a tremendous dick... but he still makes huge and respected movies.

I don't know what "judge others about what they consider a good movie" really means... but I'm assuming you meant that no one should judge the character of a person based on what kind of movies they enjoy.
This is 2010, and pop culture has permeated everyday life to such a deep and personal extent that not only do movies, music, games and all forms of entertainment influence us in the most literal sense possible (my go-to expression for 'Goodbye' has been 'Be Seeing You' since I was exposed to The Prisoner a few years back), but they define us as individuals. If I meet a nice lady at an exhibition, and she says she's a huge 'Creed' fan, am i going to punch her square in the jaw? No. (Maybe). But that statement is and should help shape my impression of her.

That, and the passive agressive form in which you referred to me as "the above poster".
Since no one seems to be able to actually describe what about the movie that they find so appealing, and I hate being that one 'hater' who comments on movies he/she has no interest in seeing, I'm going to go ahead and bow out of this thread.
Be Seeing You.

Not bad actually - yes it is not as good as the first but watchable...

I honestly just don't get how anyone can consider the first one (because I haven't been subjected to the second yet) as much of a classic as its fans seem to. If anyone could just explain it in literal terms to me, maybe I'll gain some understanding. But as it stands, all I see is a pretty derivative and unoriginal action flick that has a raging fanbase seemingly because it tanked in its very limited theatrical run. Even this one, which now has a significant number of followers, was barely in theaters at all... which I'm guessing is because Sony knew that it's easier to love something that you perceive as "unknown" or "cultish" than something that is widely received.
And as for the Overnight character defamation claims, I would normally say that you have a point: The guys was specifically picked up by Harvey W. because he was an angry, intense drunk. So coming off as one should be expected. However, the reason that the film exists at all is because of his measured fall from grace. Weinstein bought the script to Boondock Saints for 300K, agreed to a 15 Million dollar budget (which is huge considering the average Miramax budgets at the time), get his band a record deal and even planned to buy out the bar he worked at. He had a f**king golden ticket. Yet because of his inflated ego (having done nothing of worth yet other than writing the unproduced screenplay) and abrasive behavior, he lost everything. He had to make the flick for 1/3 the budget, was provided essentially no promotional backing for the theatrical release and because of the conditions of his new contract, he lost out on any residuals from home distribution. So even if Duffy isn't as much of an utter douche as Overnight made him out to be, he still was too much of a dumb dog to realize he shouldn't bite the hand that feeds him.
And considering his varied and impressive work to date, I'd say Overnight has some merit.

Jersey Jedi hits on two of the issues I am kind of talking about (in my head). First, how the people who hate this movie can't just hate it and walk away, but have to rant on not only about how BAD the movie is, but also how its fans are retarded scumbags. I don't understand what it is about this movie that makes people feel so angry. Also, 'Overnight', a documentary that I found to be a pretty clear case of character defamation. Follow anybody around for months and months, film their every interaction and I am sure it won't be hard to come up with 90 minutes of bad attitudes, bad behavior, and bad moods. Duffy clearly isn't the most sweet, level-headed guy...but I don't buy that he's a complete ass like the documentary makes him out to be. Just ask Billy Connelly.
This is great news. awesome movie the critics don't know what they are talking about
I normally don't like to comment on flicks I'm not interested in, but I just had to respond to the comments claiming that this is "one of the best movies of 2009" and that the first one one was such a fantastic action flick.
Holy f**king jeebus is Boondock Saints overrated beyond belief.
One reviewer summed it up best, similar to Sam Spade above, when he said "The Boondock Saints is for people who think Tarantino movies are too cerebral." There is literally not a single original thing in it, with grating characters and mediocre action to boot. If tomorrow every copy and print of Boondock Saints were to spontaneously combust, it wouldn't be soon enough.
Spend some time and watch the director self-destruct instead. Duffy makes himself look like an even more egotistical Kanye West, but minus the talent.

Glad to see Ain't It Cool News has a positive review. That makes one!

Did you catch Men Who Stare at Goats in theaters? I don't mean to be snobbish but it was realllllly disappointing. It made an excellent trailer, and that was about it.
Not yet. Wanted to. Also would like to hear an announcement for "Ninja Assassin" since I missed out on both movies. Those looked like rentals.

I don't get the hate for the first movie. Loved it when it came out, and loved it the other week when I revisited it on Blu-ray. Looking forward to giving this one a rent.
Heard this was c**p, and I've always considered the first one absurdly overrated. The saints themselves are boring as sin. Dafoe made the movie worth watching.

Great sequel and one of the best movies of 2009.
Love the first, a friend said this was good but not as good as the first. So I'll definately see it!
I agree with Kyle, except I grew sick of it after the first viewing of it. A action movie for people that aren't fans of action movies. Besides Duffy is the biggest a hole in the business and deserves failure.
The first one is SO over-rated. I liked it the first time, but after viewings 4 and 5 with my best friends, I grew weary of it.
No one will ever convince me to give this a go.

Wasnt a fan of the first one. This one for some reason was fun...
Improves on everything except Flannery's face.

I so can't wait for the Blu-ray!!
unfortunately missed this one in theaters. First day buy for me
I can't wait to see this one and a few friends want to see it too.
I liked the first one (as a guilty pleasure) but this one was just plain bad. It was one of the worst of 2009.
Awesome news, and I can't wait for this release. I was fortunate to see this when it ran for almost a week in South Carolina, and this was as good if not better than the first! Time to order the whoop-ass fajitas!
