Right, other movies, not "The Departed", the DVD/film in question.

I've heard his commentaries on Casino, GoodFellas, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, The Aviator, and I don't remember him going on ad nauseum about working with the actors and doting on them. Sharon Stone is the only one who was weeping and sobbing about how great it was to work with him (Casino).

So?

You can relax, don't pass out now, it comes out on Tuesday.

It does have Scorcese on Scorcese, but no commentary, shame on you WB, again!
Let's hope they greenlight the prequel and sequel...maybe they'll give us commentaries on those...

honestly. who care's what the cover looks like. all of the us harry potter covers on the books suck majorly and it doesn't stop them from selling. the contents is what matters. scorsese has provided enough interviews and commentaries on other movies. i don't want to hear him go on about how great it was to work with jack and leo is the best young actor working today. plus this is a 'remake'. what more do you really want him to say? anyone? this movie speaks for itself, was the best movie i've seen in this decade, perhaps ever. Left me mouth wide opened and I'm a moviegoer, dvd buyer, and dubbed by many peers and business partners as the movie man. Just give me the movie!! I'm screaming to see it again now! I don't want a bootleg! I want to help this movie make its money!!
less than a week now :D
I loved this movie. It WILL win best picture. I am so buying the 2 disc
aw. I like the widescreen cover "art" better, but I don't do widescreen. ooo wells. movie is great.

Don't forget Casino, Raging Bull, Mean Streets, as well as more I probably don't know about. It does seem odd, I'd have expected the HD to have it, but no, so maybe Scorsese didn't want to do one or wasn't able to, or Hell, felt it didn't need one. But no I don't know
.
Thanks for the info Mulder, now I know for sure whether or not to get it.
Oh and do you have a link? I'd like to read some of those reviews if yeh don't mind.

By the way everyone, according to several DVD review I've read online, the R1 DVD does infact have the AMC Scorsese on Scorsese Doc. That was really bugging, but it's there in all it's 85 minutes glory.

I doubt it since all of the internet ads for the re-release still have the Feb 13th DVD release date on it.

If the price is right, I might buy the HD/DVD combo.
But will studios continue releasing both Blu-ray and HD-DVD?
This movie being annouced on HDDVD officially made me draw wood...enoug said

Is the definition on the SD in 480p like on the HD-DVD combo format? Why isn't it 720p? What's going on?
Blu-ray players also play DVD (but some don't play CD's).

Thanks for those great news. Because of that I think Blu-Ray is a doomed format,i have heard that blu-ray only supports itself. That is a very big mistake.

HD DVD players support DVD and HD DVD.
So can you play regualar DVD's on a HD-DVD player?. Because if you can't this format is a dying breed nobody is going to buy all their movies again on HD-DVD and many DVD's you can't even get on HD.

As if they havn't already with the double/triple dips.
Anyhow one of the best films of 06.
If you're going to complain, you might as well practice your spelling and grammar skills.
Anyway, the reasons why all the extras are on the HD side of the combo disc is that it's a 30/9 disc, meaning it's a dual-layered disc on both sides. The DVD side is just the regular widescreen single-disc edition -- the HD-DVD has more room to accomodate many more standard-definition extras than regular DVD does.

It's not that they are nuts. They just really really like our money like true capitolists. This HDDVD and DVD combo is tripping me out.

It's not that the players can't decode True-HD, but the firmware they came with doesn't have that feature. They can be upgraded to play it if the manufacturer issues a firmware update, but that is up to them. I've heard Panasonic plans an update, but others (Philips, Samsung) may not opt to issue True-HD support in their upgrades.

I like the 2-disc art work much better than the 1-disc. Can't wait to see this!
The first time Warner's put an uncompressed PCM track on their Blu-ray titles. Aren't Blu-ray discs also equipped to play Dolby True-HD too? (I heard they were less space-hogging than PCM tracks.)
Hey, does anyone know why most online stores aren't listing the 2-disc standard DVD for this title anymore? Did they pull it?

I always disliked those snapper-style cases; they look so cheap compared to the Amaray.

Nope, Warner's abandoned the snapper and digipak treatment for their films. The 2-disc SE will just be a regular Amaray 2-disc case with a slipcover -- which is what you see above.

One of the best films of the year.Give Martin Scorsese an Oscar already! What an ending. Now I just need to see Infernal Affairs and look theres a three disk coming out.Makes you wonder how much in advance they had that marketing figured out...
Agreed the two disk cover is brilliant. Thanks to this film I am now a fan of Dropkick Murphys.

And by the way, those Hitchcock films you listed are not domestic; they are foreign. His first American film was Rebecca, which he did under the heavy hand of David O. Selznick -- who just happened to be concurrently working on a little film called Gone With The Wind.

pretty good film, not the best. I don't know if shelling out another 5 bucks for very nil extras is worth it. I hope it does win oscars though. damon and dicaprio were outstanding in the film. not a good year in oscar films this year but this film has my vote for best pic.

Which obviusly screws all of us who won't be adopting either format soon, unless we win or are given a PS3 (anybody?), or those of us who haven't yet double dipped (strange enough, but true, I don't think it's worth it unless it's Star Wars, Terminator or Superman)...

Is is possible that the featurette "Crossing Criminal Cultures" is a comparison of IA the The Departed?
Either way, I'm not spending the extra money on the 2-disc for those lackluster extras.

Well, it's not like Warner's abandoning the audio commentary thing completely... let's see, "A Scanner Darkly", "The Wicker Man" remake and "Beerfest" are all 2006 movies that have audio commentaries ("Beerfest" has the dubious honor of having two commentaries) on their DVD releases. But considering that Wes Anderson's "The Life Aquatic" did get a dual release both by Buena Vista and Criterion (BVHE released a single-disc, Criterion did the 2-disc SE), anything's possible.

This is one of the year's best films and I am so happy that it is getting the 2 Disc treatment, although the special features seem rather lite to be on 2disc's but hopefully they're long documentaries. The coverart for both editions, especially the 2disc, are very good and I can't wait to get this!

Another vote for those who agree with Cathelotte Jean-Michel. When I watched the first half of this movie, I was thinking Best Picture, director, screenplay, etc. But, as I reached the 3/4 mark, I began to step back. Perhaps for me, too many 'Joker'-like acting moments by Jack Nicholson finally got to me--though, that may be a strength for many. That, and knowing this is a re-make of an exceptional film, Internal Affairs.
Anyway, I'll agree with another that this was an very entertaining, Scorsese-lite film. But, given that so many American remakes of great foreign films hardly come close to them in quality, Marty did very well for himself. With Internal Affairs being a hugh shadow looming over his shoulder, he did well, indeed. He's always had the guts and skill. But, many associated with the film seemed to have forgotten to give credit to the original.
Not his best, I'm in the Casino camp with that one. But, given the reception, popularity for this film and sentimentality by many in the Academy for those times he's come up short with other movies, Marty may be getting a statue in his future. As for the DVDs Warner is offering here, I'll wait for double-dip version that'll arrive with the extras we all crave.

Sweet, my favorite movie this year. Yeah I'm not at all surprised Warner opted to do the overpriced 2-disc with slim extras that could just as easily fit onto the first disc. They really seem to be all about screwing consumers out of as much money as possible and don't even put forth an effort to produce decent extras, they sure as hell don't care about commentaries anymore. It's ironic how their sister company New Line actually puts forth an effort with their DVDs and makes the best presentations possible at affordable prices, even if the movie sucks. But oh well, I will play the role of the gullible consumer and buy the 2-disc just cause I loved the movie. Even though the extras look as disappointing as the 2nd disc of Goodfellas
I hate Warner, these two-discs are such a freaking rip-off.
This movie took me an hour to get into, but then I was sucked in. I loved it! I'll be sure to pick the 2-Disc version up, shame the SRP is so jacked up.
Good to see them telling us about both versions of the film - you could almost see a double dip in 6 months otherwise....
Withouth a doubt, the best movie of 2006. Weird enough, I was only one of the few people who wanted more, and more, and more, and for the movie to be longer...sadly, will be adding the 2 disc edition to my collection (along with Gangs & Aviator), and be double dipping this one in the near future...High hopes for this to win Best Director, or Movie...let's hope!!!
They better keep the 2-Disc art for the HD/Blu-Ray releases, it's amazing cover art, I mean simply amazing.
I have to agree w/ Cathelotte Jean-Michel. Couldn't they have at least acknowledged IA?
reagardless of it being a "copy" of internal affairs or not, its still an amazing movie, and ive yet to see someone on this post says that it was just ok and theyre just getting the 1 disc
and I agree prob the best film of the year

Because Buena Vista hold the rights to Infernal Affairs, and it'd probably take more time and money than it'd be worth for Warner to get permission to use footage from it. That's in addition to the fact that they probably don't want people to know it's a remake anyway.

I suspect so, he's produced films before. As does Tom Cruise.

I think the single-disce artwork is much better than the 2-disc one, where Whalberg and Nicholson look like bankers. The lack of more extras should give suspicion that another, more elaborate edition is waiting somewhere down the line, maybe in HD. And was Brad Pitt really one of the producers...?

Marty always gets final cut and considering as yet not one of his films have been re-released in an alternate cut I can't see it.
Personally I reckon the 2 Disc SE will be it.

Agreed but that's not evidence he the original. He didn't write the script so there is no reason to believe he saw the original.
From Marty's point of view he read a decent script and said yes. You can't blame him from that point of view. It would've been a better film if were shorter.

By far NOT the best Marty movie... And I'm quite pissed of by HE'S attitude toward the Infernal Affair films (he pretended he didn't watch them... Yea right, that's why SO MANY scenes are like copies of the original movie !). And it continues with this edition. And it's true tha Warner is realy f***ing around with bonus : 2dvd's editions with almost nothing ABOUT THE MOVIE (Poseidon : 25' worth of deleted scenes and not ONE in the DVD..., NO audio coms anymore...) became the norm for them now.
Nice cover art, pity it has no commentary. Also a pity their is no featurette comparing the original to remake :-( , that would be interesting.
As for the film it's a bit Marty light and is too long but overall a good effort. If you've not seen the original you'll love it but the original is better (and I'm not just saying it).
It's too long (the break neck pace has gone) and Leo as good as he is is no Tony Leung.
Compared to Marty's previous work I wouldn't say it was a classic.
My review: http://www.alexmccaffrey.com/Reviews/The%20Depa...
p.s - I never did understand the new title? It's a bit silly too.

Personally I thought GoodFellas was underwhelming, but I loved The Aviator (until the very end, which was weird-ish), Cape Fear, and what I think is by far his best picture, Casino. We'll see how The Departed measures up.
I might have to go watch Casino now...

Love the 2-disc art, looks so raw and nice...will pick up R1 for this.
Thank you DVDactive, thank you.
The only Scorcese movies I have seen are his last three theatrical films (this included) and the Bob Dylan doc. I know it's really a shame, as a film major people get livid when I say I haven't seen such classics such as Goodfellas or Raging Bull. My initial thoughts on Gangs and Aviator were tepid, but after seeing The Departed, a fantastic fast paced, extremely well acted and directed film, I feel I really need to see the rest of his films.
Is it me or did they completely change the color scheme of this films advertisments? Wasn't the poster blue and white?

Been waiting for this announcement. My favorite movie of the year. 2 disc for me. I really like both of the artworks. Much better than the poster.
So many things are missing (extras wise)..
My gut tells me "Director's Cut" in the summer time

I'll definitely be picking this up as I loved the movie.
But I agree that the artwork is kinda lame.
The original poster would have been much better than trying to "create" this piece of art for the DVD release.
I don't care for that at all.
If you haven't seen the movie, you should do so.
The soundtrack is great as well.

Wow, so glad he used Gimme Shelter once again...!
I was specially disappointed by the ending, it seemed like they took the easy way out, but I guess when the first half of the movie is that good, any ending will be anticlimatic

What!?! Where did you hear the thing about The Fountain? That sucks. I loved that movie and I'm gonna pick up the dvd for it and the movie SCREAMS commentary track.I guess Aronofsky said he asked Warner and they just weren't interested. Fear not, though, I hear Aronofsky got the okay to ask Criterion if they wanted to release it (which would have a commentary).

too bad it'll be released before they can tack on the "academy award: best director" stamp on it...

Amazing film. I actually LOVE the artwork on the single disc. Would love to find that as a poster and get it framed. Anyway, one of the year's very best films.
I might be the only man on earth that truly didn't care for the film. For me, all the suspenseful plot twists were directly from the original IA and I was really enjoying the film the most during the first hour when it was doing something different than IA. I don't think I understand the ending: so everyone's a rat. Um....wha? Why? It just seems so tacky to have a rat scurry across the balcony. Everything got so over the top and so hard not to laugh at. Honestly, was it really necessary to eat a fly to show that Jack was unhinged? And that last scene!
God I could spoiler it up but I won't but in general, I really didn't like the film. Of Marty's more recent fiction films, I prefer the Aviator by far.

i agree
The whole 1 and 2 disc releases is the worst.
And the fact that the 2 disc version prices have jumped 5 dollars in the past few months. At 20 dollars the two disc set is at least... affordable. but $25 dollars? I mean the only people who will buy the 2 disc sets are the fans of the movie. Some of whom have already seen the departed more then once in theaters.
The solution: a discount should be offered on dvd sales to people who can prove they saw the film theatrically.

Also, for the 2 disc, and this is a first, that's the exact cover art I wanted for this disc.

Anyway Departed was a great movie and I'm picking up the 2-disc. Sucks that there's no commentary for this either since I know Scorsese does commentary tracks. And I hate that this will be like $25 when it comes out in stores when WB could of just released a 2-disc one only and it'll be normal price in stores. I hate when studios do the 1-disc, 2-disc thing cause all it does is drive the price up for the 2-disc version.

To the very first poster: you should learn to know the studios. No, there will likely NOT be any double-dip, since Warner Brothers, while they are constantly finding classic older titles and giving them 2-disc upgrades, don't re-issue CURRENT titles pretty much ever. This is double-supported by the fact that we're already getting the one-disc AND two-disc on a single day, and that Warner, in the past year, has slowly lost its support for the commentary track (Aronofsky was likewise denied one on The Fountain and I am unhappily expecting to hear that there will not be a Gondry track on The Science of Sleep).
It's a letdown, and it probably won't be fixed.
However, the date is far enough away (and there's enough space on that back cover) to throw on some more bonuses if Scorsese walks away with a Best Director Oscar nomination -- not sure when the ceremony itself is. Either way I want to see the film and as weak as it looks, I'll pick up the two-disc over the single disc any day of the week.

I just don't see why they couldn't merge the extras from the second disc onto the 1st disc. The extras seem pretty short. I just want the deleted scenes.
This movie is my favorite film of 2006. For a remake, the plot was taut, the acting was superb and the direction was excellent. It's not a film that will get much repeat play as does my other films, but it's definitely a film that stays with you and despite some very minor flaws -- I found a lot to love about this film. For me, this turned me into a fan of Scorsese's work and I will check out the rest of his filmography.
But I do say that the lack of extras for this film is very disconcerting. Only four extras for the SE? I can almost guarantee that if this film nabs a lot of Oscars next February, the WB will release a more fully stuffed edition -- commentary and all. (When the WB released "The Aviator" last year, that movie was packed to the gills with extras and this film doesn't come close to having that amount of extras.)
For me, I'll stick with the single-disc edition. The art for the single-disc is reminscent of the one-sheet and the fact that the extras on the SE are positively scant.

Huge Scorsese fan, saw this in the theater and was very pleased.
It is a bit diffrent for a Scorsese film, yet just as good and maybe more enjoyable then anything he has done in years to the casual fan...ME I love him and Leo as a team!

Again, HD version, WB?
Already announced in Australia...
this was a very good entertaining film, id say it was my second favorite film of the year, Apocalypto being first though.
The best film of 2006. Scorsese better get the directing Oscar for this one. Definitley one for the collection.
So soon? Hey, I'm not complaining, one of my favorite movies of the year from one of my favorite directors. Nice return to form, Marty. Initial impressions of the dvd: Why oh why did they change the perfect poster art? Gah! Speaking of moles, my god, they make Damon's barely noticable mole into Deniro like proportions on the single disc cover. I will most certainly pick the 2 disc up, and look forward to watching that PERFECT opening scene with Nicholson strolling into the bar, with the Stone's "Gimme Shelter" playing. Looking at the Special Features, I'm also inclined to ask, "Is there any good ones? (Because what I see is definitely lacking compared to recent Scorsese dvds). I'll be there the 13th, albeit a little miffed about the lack of Special Features. (P.S., WB, stop justifying two disc editions with hardly anymore special features just to make more money. You are shamming the customer, and we are aware of it.)

You!? The person who started a thread entitled "The Departed...WHY O WHY !!!!" was 'sceptic' about it!!??? That's the most shocking thing I've seen in relation to this movie!
Unbelievable film too.... THIS is the flick that finally changed Marky Mark into Mark Whalberg to me. I loved the original poster, but both covers aren't half-bad (I actually prefer the 1-disc, but the difference is negligible).

If anyone at WB is reading this...i, like several others who have posted here (the people who really care) would REALLY like to have the Departed on HDDVD....wanna give us one?
I absolutely loved this movie. Both covers are great, which seems to be rare recently. I actually prefer the one-disc art, and since the extras seem slim on the SE I may have to buy the one-disc (if it's the usual $5-10 cheaper) and just Netflix the special features.
I WANT THE HD VERSION..its WB so there should be one.....
I read elsewhere that there will be a same-day release on HD-DVD.
A buy for sure. Where is the HD version?
Nice cover.
The extras on the 2-disc set look weak!! No Scorsese commentary and not even a "Making of" feature. You mean to tell me The WB didn't hire a DVD producer to shoot any type of behind the scenes material for this?
Also, why isn't there some type of featurette to compare this film with Infernal Affairs?
I will probably still buy this movie since it was so damn good, but the WB has really been half assing their DVD releases as of late.

I like the two disc ver. cover. For some reason it reminds me of The Sopranos cover arts.
love the art on the 2-disc
gotta love that tangoesque score by Shore. pre-ordering this the second it becomes available
The art for both is lacking. Why didn't the two-disc feature the one-sheet?
And wasn't "Scorsese on Scorsese" supposed to be on there?
Anyway, can't wait. One of the best movies of this year.

Wow, my favorite movie of the year and I am really bummed about the extras. No Commentary? No behind the scenes? Interviews? Deleted scenes are such worthless extras? Featurette on the Boston mafia? Blah! Come on WB can do better!

I'm angry that they're doing 2 versions, but of course, I'll buy the 2-disc.
glad to see "The Departed" getting a Two-Disc Special Edition, will def be picking that up.
YES! First one! Which is great because not only is this the best picture of the year, Scorsese's greatest film yet, but it's also the best film I've in years. I know everyone always says that, but if you knew me, you knew how good a movie needs to be to truly please me. I really do like both covers, but the 2 Disc is one for be. I think it's more than obvious that there will eventually be a double dip. (The zero commentary gives it away) Don't know about the actually release, although the two documentaries could be two long hour docs or something. Looking forward to the deleted scenes. I saw this twice in theatres, needless to say, finally, a movie worth seeing over and over again. You owe to yourself to see this.
