i just purchased this movie on blu ray...and three copies later...it still doesn't work. has anyone else encountered this problem?
Yeah, this one was pretty good. I hope the DVD has a good surround mix. I used to work with an Asian girl that looks a lot like the lead in this film.
i loved this horror flick...
i went to see it with my brother, and he loved it as well...
let me tell you that I never jump with any movies... but I jumped with this one at the movie theater...
the best horror movie in a decade!!!
9.5/10!!!!
totally awesome!!

Great Movie, after the descent starts.

Personally, I'm glad they ditched that poster. The cover art now is great. Much scarier looking. The other poster is just a ripoff of the "Silence of the Lambs" poster, and really didn't have anything to do with the movie.

These girls were tough. They weren't running around helplessly with their boobs hanging out like in those other horror movies.
Great movie, very original, and super scary!

Right? I also go for DTS since is a much better sounding experience, still many people argue with me that Dolby is better, and NO WAY.

Why does the full screen Theatrical DVD get the better cover art!

Absolutely one of the best horror films in years. An interesting premise, creepy setting (incidentally...it was ALL filmed on a soundstage...watch the film and tell me it doesn't look real), good acting (good female acting in a horror film is rare these days), grotesque gore and some truly shocking moments. The perfect companion piece to Dog Soldiers.
I have no idea why people are acting like this is some Box Office disappointment. It made over 26 Million at the US Box Office, which is really good for being a British import, especially one that's already available for download or purchase online because it was released in other places beforehand. Normally these movies don't make this much money. The TV spots for this one were great and got people in the theaters. It has made a nice gross from theaters in the US alone, and will more than double it in DVD rentals and sales for sure. It's a success and has made more than a lot of other horror movies from this year, like Slither, Pulse, See No Evil, An American Haunting, and Stay Alive...
i read alot of articles about this film, had alot of positive reviews, I just loved dog soldiers, came in looking for a scare. it was a good movie but not as good as dog soldiers. I thought there would be more gore to it. very strong female leads, but overall a good quality scary movie. looking a little intrigued to see the original ending.

I don't know if I already said something in here, but man is this film disappointing. I knew I was setting myself up for failure by buying into the UK critics who called it one of the scariest movies ever. It did accurately give me some creeped out sensations of claustrophobia, but basically the movie is just jump scares and brutal violence with a soap-opera level storyline about women cheating with each others' husbands.
Disappointing that people keep praising it, but I suppose with most horror these days being PG-13 and c**ppy people will praise just about anything. Off the top of my head, I don't think anything in the genre this year has worked for me except Slither, and that's half comedy.

its been avalable in the uk for ages, 2 disc with dts. I got mine over 6 months ago.

This movie represented many things, and the "Keebler elves", as you put it, are just one of them. They not only have to deal with these things - they also have to deal with getting out, and they also have to deal with each other, which, to me, is as uncliche' as you can get.
"The Descent" is, indeed, one of the best horror movies in recent years, and if it weren't for idiotic US marketing campaigns that a) hyped up its gore factor instead of its suspense and b) spoiled the first great scare of the movie, it might have had a better shot. I've been a fan of this ever since it got released in the UK last year, and it's definitely on my top 20 list of all time.
Also, I know a bunch of hot girls in the DC area who like to go rock climbing. Doesn't make a difference if they're hot, if they're female or whatever in this movie - it's more about the conflict rather than the "hotness".
Isn't it conceivable that something, not quite the Crawlers from this movie, but something close, could have adapted themselves to live underground? What would they look like? How would they act? What would they do to survive? I think this movie opens up those possibilities and is the product of a few peoples' imaginations.
And it scared the living sh*t out of me the first few times I watched it.
And the DTS that's on the now-available UK 2-disc set? Amazing and worth the import price. This movie *does* rely on sound effects for its effective storytelling, and the surrounds get quite a workout.
The only way to watch this is with the lights out, the 5.1 (or 6.1) system rockin', and with a few people who don't mind getting scared.

It's better than "The Cave" that's all I know.
w0ot! by the looks of it we're(Canada) getting a slipcover with the Maple versions!
I know, slipcovers don't add much but I find them cool sometimes, usually if they're embossed or just more shiny!

I have been waiting for this one. Heard it totally rocked.

One of my favorite horror movies of the decade and one of the best movies of this year. It was absolutely wonderful. I will definitely be picking this up.

preordering this the very second it's available to preorder.
further proves my point that 2006 is great year for mature horror movies. none of that PG-13, possesed japanese girl BS

One of my favorites of the year - I had such an adrenaline rush throughout - and nothing scares me these days but there were quite a few "jump out of my seat" moments in this...I'll buy.

That's clever when Sony have confirmed the BD hardware doesn't yet support this.
I'm sure it's possible. Blu-ray is a totally new product and its up to the companies that produce the authoring software (rather than Sony) to come up with new and imaginative ideas. Lionsgate use a start-up called Metabeam as their system.

This is easily the best horror movie I have seen in years! Can't wait to get this! I'm also a little confused with "The Original Unrated Cut" and "The Original Uncut"... Great cover art though. Glad they went with it.
Trust me, surround sound on this is a definite must...
I don't get why the American market constantly needs alternates cuts, or maybe more to the point the American studios seem to think it does.
Why are so many releases still getting 4:3 versions too? All this helps is delaying people switching to Widescreen. The rest of the world gave up with dual WS & 4:3 releases a long time ago.
Full-screen is such an absurd nme.

Great cover! This looked good, I've heard many good things, and will look forward to the original ending that wasn't butchered for the U.S. Will pick this up, and ramp up the speakers in the dark....
Finally some official news! I LOVED this movie, saw it in July at the Montreal Fantasia Festival and I don't know if I saw an unrated cut but this puppy was GORY! So I really don't know what gore they had to cut that warrants an 'unrated' edition!
So yeah this movie was awesome, the tension was insane and the gore was perfect! One of the best horror movies in years!
Don't know how I feel about those covers though, I think I like the theatrical cover a little bit more. But yeah they could have been way worse!
Can't wait to pick this up! :D

Mal - thanks for the spoiler blackout, apologies to anyone who read by accident. I think you're right, the US ending will appear to be weird and incomplete without the added coda, and yet the UK ending felt a bit of a copout too. It's such a cheap old trick, I was a little disappointed it was used here. Nevertheless, an excellent, very effective horror movie - had me gnawing on my beer bottle for most of its 90 minutes...
Just to explain without the need of a spoiler... the US theatrical version does not include the last scene of the film (and may also be lacking other scenes). Without this last scene The Descent will appear more superficial than it is.

According to IMDb, the original UK ending was altered for the US because it was too much of a downer. Apologies for SPOILERS...
Spoiler Apparently the US version ends when Sarah sees the ghost of a friend in the passenger seat of her car. The original UK ending then continued with an extra scene showing that her escape sequence was just a dream she had after falling unconscious, and that she is in fact as doomed as her friends.

Good movie until near the end when it became a joke.

What ending will the unrated cut have? I remember reading that there were two different endings.
I love that unrated cover and Rue Morgue has said great things about this film.
I'm sorry if I'm an idiot, but what is the difference between Original Uncut and Unrated Cut?
If they plan on double-dipping, then yeah I would say so... but highly doubt it because they are releasing an "Uncut" version as well
I don't think this movie made lots of $ in theatres but I definitely will need to check it out since there were lots of good reviews given toward this horror flick.
