Quote: In 1937, Nanking stands at the forefront of a war between China and Japan. As the invading Japanese Imperial Army overruns China's capital city, desperate civilians seek refuge behind the nominally protective walls of a western cathedral. Here, John Miller (Bale), an American trapped amidst the chaos of battle and the ensuing occupation takes shelter, joined by a group of innocent schoolgirls and thirteen courtesans, equally determined to escape the horrors taking place outside the church walls. Struggling to survive the violence and persecution wrought by the Japanese army, it is an act of heroism, which eventually leads the seemingly disparate group to fight back, risking their lives for the sake of everyone.

I want to see this one- shame it isn't getting a wide theater release
Such a great film! Only real issue was Christian Bale's character's transition from indifferent and self-involved to caring and valiant; wasn't the acting, the script just didn't give a lot of development for this.
bale IS A DOUCHEBAG Shame he plays Batman,Great his last Role as batman

That should be the review quote on the DVD cover

the reason it didn't get a wide release is because of the distributor they got for the US didn't want to spend the money on making it a wide release. Such a shame. They released it for one weekend back in Dec, it did really well, then they pulled it and then released it in like 5 theatres across US after it failed to garner a nomination. It was all planned wrong by the US distributor. Yimou should've given the US rights to Sony Picture Classics since they handled all his previous films and actually have money to spend on a marketing campaign. Shame all around for this great film.
Christian Bale can do no wrong. Like the cover, but I feel it's a bit crowded with pictures above "The Flowers of War" text.

I wonder why it's not gettinga full blown theaterical release?
