Count me interested when the BD appears. Until then, what's the point?

Amen to that, Chris.
They've been remastered, you can read about it here:
http://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/viewtopi...
So they should be an improvement.
I agree though, wake me up when the BD comes, but as this is Paramount it won't be for months and months.
The new extras don't look to add much. My existing 5 Disc box set is already decent:
Disc 1 - Godfather
Discs 2 & 3 - Godfather: Part 2
Disc 4 - Godfather: Part 3
Disc 5 - Extras
It's also a pity it looks like it's 4 keep cases this time, instead of digi-pack.

The original box set has been OOP for some time now. All you can buy is a box set without the fifth extras disc.

I'd like to see a restoration on these films, as the 2001 package isn't too easy on the eyes. Having said that, I kinda like the 'old' feel this gives the films.

It's still a pretty pointless release. Anyone who owns it is either going to have the fifth disc or won't pay £30 just to do so. A BD release would at least be a first HD effort.

I nearly c**pped myself because I initially thought this was for the BD release.
Unfortunately though, this is an offer I CAN refuse!

I agree Paramount should get their ass into gear and give us BDs. I don't think it's pointless though.
For one, if something can be improved upon it should be released, secondly the existing box set is OOP so people can no longer buy it.
It's a bit early to say it's pointless, when we've not even seen how much better this new Remastered transfer will look.
I know you're not saying this Chris, but generally speaking I have always found it weird when people get so angry something is re-released as if they'd prefer everyone was denied the newer/better package. As long as it doesn't happen really quickly (like Children of Men) I'm never against a re-release.
If a release warrants an upgrade I'll upgrade, if not I won't.

This did have a release date for HD-DVD so at least they have remsatered it in HD. Whether or not the process will need to be redone for BD or not is another matter. As well as whether or not Paramount are contractually obliged not to release any BDs until a certain lay off period is over.

As you point out, I'm not saying that, or getting angry (God knows I have enough multi-buys under my belt). I just think it's a bit of a missed opportunity. We could have had a great BD trilogy and instead we get yet another DVD release of something that's had multiple outings. I'm sure it is an improvement over the previous release, but there can't be too many fans who haven't got one of the existing sets already.
Still, the restoration is proof that an HD version will arrive eventually. Can't see them spending a load of cash to restore the films for just another DVD release.

Exactly. The restoration for DVD will mean a better looking BD!
This is Paramount, whose response to HD-DVD losing has been to give up on HD entirely, for now anyway. For that reason I never expected a BD release. They've not even re-released Face/Off and that must already have a 2 Disc BD ready to go.

so this new release will have NEW bonus materials AND the original bonus materials?
I don't understand what everyone is complaining about, if you want to hold out for the BD then hold out. Otherwise, I think re-releasing these great films on DVD with fully restored picture and some more extras is great and not pointless at all. And mind you I already own the first boxset. Can't wait till this hits R1!
I love how they list the "Hidden Easter Egg." Thanks for ruining the surprise! Best mafia movies ever!(1 and 2,3 is just alright)
Like i said, it was ready to go in HD.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Godfather-Trilogy-HD-DV...
But who knows when it gets a BD release. I will wait until then.
I agree with the above poster who said its still a good set. Some people may not have it or may not wish to upgrade to HD, in which case it looks like great value. Like the guy said, nobody is forced to buy it.

The 'pointless' is really connected to the fact that we still have no "Godfather : The Epic" on DVD!!!
For any fan of the films the mass of extra footage in this was gold (stuck on as extras does not count). I want to upgrade my 'The Epic' VHS set.
Not sure I could watch 1 & 2 without those extra scenes anymore as they add some great moments of drama.

Good point Dave. I had forgotten about that.
It would be nice to have it for completion, but I prefer the original edits of the films.

Because the point is the producers could have just released this instead of the previous version, it is just another cash cow. Like the recent Indy box-set, this should have been released as BD only. But hey, you go out & give those f**kers another £30.

What about advances in software or manufacturing?
Remember in the early days how we were all clambering for some of the big films, when the best we could get was The Mummy??
Obviously things are going to get better as they go along so why not release another version of GF if you can do better than the version you released 5 years ago?
:?
Sorry, I didn't finish my point about "The Mummy". What I meant was that we were desperate for the studios to get things like GF, Indy, Star Wars, Jaws, etc... out on DVD. If Paramount put together a decent package when we wanted it and can now do better, then why not?
Honestly, you would think that some studios want to eat your children the way some people get so upset when they release their films.

The studios are probably already planning their double and triple re-releases on Blu-ray so Godfather the epic will probably make an appearance a year or two down the line.
If DVD has taught the studios anything it's that re-releases with different bonus features and cuts makes alot of cash and that will continue even though Blu-rays extra disc space can seamlessly branch many different versions on one disc.

I really hoped there was gonna be an inclusion of the "Epic version"
That is one ugly cover compared to the original. The blood and embossed text.... yuck

Ummmmm...no, they obviously couldn't have released this because Coppola didn't newly remaster these until sometime last year. The original boxset came out a very long time ago (and I got I new and very very cheap). The new Indy boxset is surely a cash cow cause Lucas remastered the films the first DVD around and there will surely be another box set with Indy 4 is released on DVD later this year. "The Godfather Trilogy" was due for an audio/visual upgrade for quite a while on all formats. But hey, I'm not asking you to buy it, but I wouldn't dismiss it as a cash cow considering that many consumers are still using DVD and BD isn't the norm yet, or for quite a while.

I couldn't agree more with you.

Are you talking about the TV version, which cut all three films together in chronological order?
That doesn't sound like a good idea to me, if it's not broken don't fix it. I've not seen it but I imagine the extra scenes were deleted for a reason and really the Godfather films are long enough as they are anwyay.
If it was three extended cuts with just extra footage and not chronologically ordered I'd be more amenable to the idea.
Chaos Engine wrote: Because the point is the producers could have just released this instead of the previous version, it is just another cash cow.
Incorrect. It's been Remastered and the previous 4 disc box set has been OOP for ages now.
Yes.

I don't already own the trilogy and haven't seen it available for ages
Won't be picking this one up - very happy with my Japanese Wooden Box, R4 and R3 Box
I'll be waiting for the Blu-Ray Release - To me, 1 and 2 are together the best movie(s) ever made, just pure brilliance!!

i don't understand why you think there was a reason to cut those scenes if you are fine with them being in extended editions of the films!
and for the record, all those scenes are wonderful and anyone who hasn't seen THE EPIC, really should.
they were clearly cut for reasons of running time - let's face it, the films are very long as it is! (which is fine with me)
ps. i think the box looks great. i'm a graphic artist so i should know! haha
