This movie was really good, but not great. I'd give it a 7/10.
Might give it a blind buy cause I like Daniel Craig after his performance as Bond in "Casino Royale". But I think I'll rent befor i buy it.
Two disc art looks Classic!
I don't care about the movie, but I am loving that 2-disc artwork.
"A great family adventure."
Hey, good to know. I am sure having that printed on front will help a lot.
Really, this quote-mania on cover art is getting more and more stupid...
As for the possible future double-dipping, I guess is a sure bet, for the people behind the movie got a case of cold feet and edited out the original and already shot ending so as to go with a "higher note".

Well. I'll give this a rent, but I won't be expecting a huge movie make for me.
I like the 2-disc cover and the bonus material is good. But isn't it just commentary, trailers, gallery, and short featurettes. I mean think about it. It could still be a 1-disc DVD. And I bet it will be in a cheap cardboard cut-out. They should really make special editions like a year afetr the release but overall it's okay.

I enjoyed it - I think it made enough to warrant a sequel.

Much MUCH better than "Narnia". No comparison.
I'm still waiting for my August Rush.
Yeah smells like LOTR extended release ploy to me (same studio as well)
I've heard good things about this movie, and also that an 'extended' version could be even better...so I'm waiting for an exteded cut, like LOTR or Narnia (yep, I got that 4-disc edition)...
I thought Chronicles was better...

The problem isn't that the story is bad, the film just feels dull and listless. I almost fell asleep in the theater.
I'm in the middle of reading the book right now, though I may check out the movie next week if it's still in the cheapo theaters.
Beautiful artwork for the 2-disc edition...is this as enjoyable as Chronicles of Narnia?
Highres artwork added for the 2-disc...
Or wait for the double dip I spose?
Interesting how this was compared to The Rings.....

The single disc art is very good, but the two-disc's is superb. Very underrated film- I'll get the two-disc.
The beard goes at what would have been the end of the film. Ther's a shot of Daniel Craig without beard sort of looking in amazement at something (emmitting a bright light) in the trailer. Those who have read the book will most likely know what he's looking at.

Don't listen to them.
Trust me, I wouldn't. One of my weekly busmates said he would ONLY see the movie with his girlfriend, otherwise, will have no desire to see the movie. But one of my best friends went to the screening and said it was pretty good. That was the only good review I heard from that person.

Where has Daniel Craig's beard gone? It looks like they took his face from another film....

The much hyped polar bear fight is a travesty as it reduces a majestic, otherworldly experience down to a flat, unremarkable cartoon with no impact at all. Much the same can be said of the rest.
How about reading the book AND seeing the movie. And make your own decision.

The focal points of the book and film are different.
The plot of the book (broadly) is freeing the children and Lyra finding Lord Asriel. Which she does at the end of the book.
The focus of the film (from a marketing standpoint as well) seemed to be about 2 bears having a big fight.
I do hope we get to see the remaining 2 films and indeed a fuller version of The Golden Compass.

I'll buy both, like I did for LotR. It's worth it to me. At least i'm sure we'll get more with the double dip.
The Director has gone on record saying his cut of the film was at least 35 to 40 minutes longer. I think I will wait for his cut to be released before seeing this (assuming it gets released).
Well, I think Chris Weitz made the ending of the movie at a different point than the book because he wasn't sure if the film would be successful to garner a sequel (I know he said the decision was to give the first movie the best ending possible and give the second film the best opening sequence). Sure, there are a few threads left open (such as the fate of Lord Asriel, Coulter's loyalties and what state Lyra's friend is in). But anyway, it's fine as a standalone film.
I'll get the single-disc... it's cheaper (I hope it has some bonus material like a commentary), looks nicer and I really dig the gold-colored keep case. New Line hasn't done the colored keep cases for a film since the LOTR theatrical cuts.

The single and two-disc artwork are both very nice, I'm surprised. Then again, its NewLine, they usually come through with that.
I was about halfway done with the book when I saw the film, and though I enjoyed both well enough, I have to say the book made a lot more sense, and the ending was far better.

I had a free ticket to go see this. I misplaced it, though, and only discovered that it had expired the day prior to finding it. DEFINITELY a D'oh! moment. So, yea, I never had the chance to go see it anyway. I will most likely NetFlix this.
And Harker Studios, as mentioned before, do yourself a HUGE service by blind-buying Stardust. Definitely one of 2007's best and one of the greatest fantasy/action/rom-com films you will ever see.

Hold up. "The Golden Compass" got two nominations for Best Art Direction and Visual Effects. Can you honestly say with a straight face that "Zodiac" and "The Mist" deserved nominations in those fields over "The Golden Compass"!?? Give me a break. "Zodiac" was a brilliant brilliant film, no doubt. But it should have received nominations for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Screenplay and Cinematography. And that's it. "The Mist" STUNK and deserves nothing. [/quote]
I really wanted to see this in theatres and I still can since it still is in theatres in my area but my friend who wanted to see it went with someone else so I might end up just seeing it on dvd!
Love the cover art! Not sure about some of these comments about the ending I'm hearing. The book was great but I think I would be okay if a little changed. Changes from the book to movie that I usually like the least are changes in characters.

I never saw this in theaters. I heard mixed reactions to it. People either loved it or hated it. I'll probably rent it like I did The Chronicles of Narnia. I know that The Golden Compass is supposed to be the opposite of the Narnia books and movie but it just reminds me so much of it.
Hopefully DVD sales will be enough to fuel a resurgence of interest and filming of the remaining 2 episodes of this story. GC was mildly engaging but what good is a trilogy if you don't get to see the end?
I loved this movie, I found it very entertaining. Moreso than Narnia, which I also enjoyed...I just wonder why that got such great reviews and this one didn't. It was very well acted and made. I'll pick it up I just hope the other movies are made.
I'm not sure what I'm more happy about the fact that it's getting a bluray release or how awesome the cover is. Sadly I'm on a budget that ends a week after thsi release but oh how I may break it for this film and if it has all the deleted stuff I'm totally there.
I've never read the novels, but I thought that the film was okay. At the very least it kept me interested and entertained, but I hope the sequels are bigger improvements (if they happen considering the film failed domestically but did well internationally). Although, I'll be buying the 2-Disc edition with that awesome cover and extras, the single disc art is really nice too.

do yourself a favor...rent STARDUST asap!!! hell...you could even make a blind buy. Robert De Niro steals the show. i was not interested in seeing it during its theatrical release...but a friend let me borrow her dvd last weekend and absolutely loved it.

I loved this film, the concept was brilliant. The Platinum Series cover is stellar looking!!!! Blu-ray edition for me, for sure. Single disc cover, should stay as it is. Great stuff. Very exited about this.
This movie was okay, but way too fast-paced and didn't get what was going on. Obivously I didn't read the book, but I thought it was pretty good. And really nice effects, and deserved more Box office than it did. And the 2 Disc art work looks really nice!
For such a ridiculous mix of fantasy story (mostly films not books) why such an eye popping cover? The 2 disc I mean. Look at the smaller picture, really neat.
But I was bored with this movie I can't believe this got Oscar nominations over Zodiac or The Mist.

I'm likely to pick up the two-disc as well. But wonder if that neat golden DVD case with the one-disc will be with the two-disc as well..?
I might buy the Blu version as I heard it was pretty good!
I'm loving that 2-disc cover art. I still have to see this one. It's at my 2nd-run theater, so I'll most likely go this weekend. I might get the 2-disc.
Great cover for a GREAT movie! Best fantasy film I've seen in years. Can't wait to pick this up.
I loved this movie, and love the books as well. However, I was a bit dissappointed by the end. Too bad we won't get to see the other two books turned into films
Cutting the religious c**p out wasn't why the film is a bad. Even with it in, it'd still be exactly the same - average.
I couldn't stand this movie.Dakota Blue Richards, the little girl that plays Lyla is an amazing child actor though.I only enjoyed the polar bear scene. This flick is strange, I would have liked to see it with all the anti religion stuff in it.Only really sensed a hint of it.
The film flopped because the producers and Hollywood wimps feared a backlash from religious nutters, so they toned down all that made the books good in the first place.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnd guess what happens? The fans hate it and stay away in droves and the religious NUTTERS still boycott it.
If they'd have had some BALLS and stood their ground against these NUTjobs, maybe they'd at least have made a good film that the FANS of the books wanted. There are a lot of fans of these books, the films were a license to print money, but once again they give into these psychos and ruin everything........

But why Paul Greengrass? I don't want shaky handicam work for "The Subtle Knife", should that ever get made.
That's good news then regarding the returns oversees. The box office picture isn't as grim as I thought it was.
As for Pail Greengrass, I was just using him as an example the way he took Doug Liman's film and made the 2 sequels his own. He wasn't afraid to take a different approach to the material. The Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass need someone like that who can do the same.
Also I was just musing on what Paul Greengrass would make of adapting and shooting the books.

New Line rarely double dip their dvd except for the Lord of the Rings trilogy which was worth double dipping. So I'm hoping that the film will be an extended cut featuring the ending just like in the book. Because they wanted to keep it for the sequel which I'm pretty sure they won't make it now. So, adding like 30 minutes to the film, that's what director Chris Weitz said in an interview, will make the movie better. Other than that, the extras will be good, so this is a must see for me.
The 2 disc version looks beautiful. I would like an "extended version" though. The film was too rushed, like too heavily edited.

'Over $300,000,000 worldwide box office'.
Where are they getting those figures from? I thought this film struggled to make $50m at the US box office. I read that it was doing stronger business internationally but $300m. Don't get me wrong, I hope those figures are true as I'd like to see the sequels happen despite a very truncated and disjointed first film.
Interesting to see some of the scenes that would have made up the ending to the film on you tube.
It's a problem really, for New Line. If there isn't the revenue to support the sequels being made, any attempt to reinstate the full ending for any extended edition DVD, (like LOTR) would, in my view, only go to make for an even more frustrating film.
Having nearly finished Book 3, I have extreme doubts any studio would carry on with this series. It needs someone with not only a lot of experience but a fresh approach to adapt the books, as well as 'not the director of Golden Compass' to take ownership of any sequels. I'm probably think of the Bourne sequels as a model here.
I wonder if Paul Greengrass would be up for finishing what's been started?

Unlike LOTR and Harry Potter, I didn't read the books and I was pleasantly surprised. I heard about the movie ending that takes place three chapters before the conclusion of the actual book, but it works fine movie-wise. It's not nearly as good as the first two franchises, but I enjoyed it.
Shame this bombed at the domestic box office (I think it was due to the marketing of the film and lukewarm reviews too). I would like to see the other two books get the film treatment, but I don't see more sequels forthcoming (it did very well internationally despite its domestic total). Should New Line Cinema get folded into Warner Brothers after Lynne and Shaye get the boot later on this year, maybe those sequels will get the greenlight after all.

I was disappointed in the film (like they took off the original ending which matached the book's and it will supposedly pop up as the first act of the second film if it ever gets made). The book was so much better.
