The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company travels East, encountering along the way skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all–a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself – The Dragon Smaug.News by Gabriel Powers

Personally, I like having both cuts. I just wish they were released together on one edition (like almost every other film with multiple versions).
I love the extended editions of "The Lord of the Rings", but after enduring Jackson's 3 hour "King Kong" -- no more Jackson director's cuts. "An Unexpected Journey" and "Desolation of Smaug" are just fine in their theatrical formats. Both movies are too long as it is.
why would you buy this when you know the extended cut is forthcoming?
Yep...waiting on the 3D Version, too!
(...wish they'd just release ALL the versions at the same time...geesh!)
(...wish they'd just release ALL the versions at the same time...geesh!)

Blowing up a book like that to 3 (!!!) feature films is nothing but ridiculous.
I hope the 3D version will come with a lenticular slip cover like with the first film. Can't wait for the extended edition special features!
That artwork for the Blu-ray/DVD Combo is sick though I wish they would have saved it for the extended version which will probably come out later this year.
