"Jackson is now another George Lucas"
He he - good one Wilsons!
He he - good one Wilsons!

Because if it's anything like the King Kong production diaries it will be hours long.
Why couldn't they just fit that one extra on the DVD?
They're having a 2-Disc BD release for ONE extra?! Talk about waste of a disc...

Spoiler fixed! Oh, and your buddy would be correct in his assessment of the heaven scenes.

But I will admit, I loved the effects in What Dreams May Come and nothing like any other film I've come across. Not to mention, the movie explored the entire dead/afterlife world(heaven, hell and in-between) Every time I mention the title, people give me a blank stare and tell me they never heard of it. Very enjoyable movie.

I don't understand why the movie was crucified by the critics. It was a pretty good movie. I feel sorry for Jackson. After the less-than-spectacular reviews of King Kong, this must have been a heavy blow.
The movie itself was worth a watch, at least once. I liked the fx as well. Guess it was just a wrong project for Jackson. I hope he bounces back with Tintin.

Such a completely disappointing experience considering the pedigree of the cast and the director. Had some nice moments and some great-ish performances but ultimately I was left with...meh.
Loved the film! I'm curious to find out if Peter Jackson is going to release an extended cut of it: he's done it with "King Kong", "LOTR" and "The Frighteners" and, there are a few things in the trailer that were not in the film we saw! Anyway, see it!
This is a rental or a cheap buy. Nothing amazing...
Ronan looks freaking hot at the BAFTA!

The actors were phenomenal and the story was great. The 14-year-old actress was portraying emotion and she would act like any human put in the situation would. Everyone was very convincing and believable. And usually, I nitpick on films that trade CGI for story, but in this case, I thought it had everything. A great story, amazing performances, and ground-breaking special effects. I know everyone has their own opinion, but I'm not sure why the film left people hanging or feeling empty. And I even had HIGH expectations.
I think we had HIGHER expectations, especially when the film is being handled by Peter Jackson himself. I've been following him since Dead Alive(aka Braindead). I loved Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners.
What got me in Lovely Bones wasn't the acting or story/script. Both were excellent. The biggest problem with me, like Wilson Bros has somewhat mentioned, is the CGI use in the film. I just didn't like the afterlife scenes. The storyline was about a (first-born) daughter being raped & murdered by a neighbour and does everything in her power to hint her parents about him. Problem is, Peter Jackson puts in this lovely colourful CGI afterlife scene in-between scenes of the living world. Personally, it should've been darker since her soul wasn't put to rest. 'Unfinished business' as some refer to it.
I was left with the impression of "Hey! You were killed by a murderer but everything now is peachy!" Yeah. Right. There's a killer out there and all those lost souls are happy and dancing around this tree.
Maybe, I do agree that Jackson was a little too invested in the CGI, but even Susie was in Heaven, she wasn't "happy and peachy". No matter what, she just wanted her family back. She knows she's dead and never coming to Earth again. It's a struggle for her to be happy. Spoiler At the end she was happy because other kids that were dead, just like her were happy and taking advantage of their life. They loved her, that's why she was happy .

The cast were great (we even admired Mark Walhberg), but the overuse of CGI ended up hurting the storytelling, rather than servicing it (just think of it as being the same as the V'Ger fly-through sequence in Star Trek: The Motion Picture).
Certainly there were high hopes for this one because Jackson made the wonderful Heavenly Creatures comparatively early on in his career and most thought that him tackling such a beloved novel was something that honestly couldn't miss. Sadly it did in our opinion.
Jackson is going to have to make his next movie something REALLY special, otherwise moviegoers and critics are going to turn on him in the same way that they turned on Lucas.

We've followed his career with considerable interest right from the release of Bad Taste, and were two of the few who got to see Meet The Feebles during the one-print theatrical run, but it really left us feeling empty inside to see Jackson gut a beloved novel of all but shades of the darkness so important to it. Let's not even mention the misfiring of the lighthearted montage in the middle of the movie.
It's a damn shame, and it could even mean Jackson spending some time in the ominous/infamous "director's jail".

Always wanted to see this, just never got around to it.
I did a similar thing with hancock on blu-ray. I refused to buy it until recently when i got it for $10.
Because the cover to the blu-ray is horrible! the one disc DVD was better with the close up on will smiths face.
People ask me why it matters? simple. When you pay $40 (in Australia anyway...) you're not just buying the movie. You're buying the movie, the discs authoring, it's quality, the covers printing and artwork quality, it's an entire package. Otherwise, they'd all come in a plastic slip.
Make no mistake that a dvds/blu-rays cover is 40-50% of the marketing of it. If it sucks, it can cause issues. And piss off fellow cover fanatics

They've done it again with the upcoming release of The Italian Job (2003) Remaster. I guess I should start learning how to do Custom Cover for Blu-ray...

Definitely. The Photoshop job on this is terrible.

This was a terrific film. Great performances, stunning imagery, and a solid direction. I don't see any reason to complain. Many people bash on the overuse of "heaven" scenes, when they wouldn't be saying that if they understood the film. It wasn't just about Susie's murder. It was about her trying to tell her parents who the killer was and trying to connect to her family, the people she misses the most. And Jackson wasn't just "showcasing" his CGI with the heaven scenes, that's how heaven looks. Nice, glossy, and clean.
I can't even reason with viewers saying it's a mixed bag. It had all the elements of an amazing movie and more. I will buy the Blu-ray and I am happy to hear it will have a plethora of extras. I don't like the artwork too much. I wish it was the one with Stanley Tucci like someone else said. But I suppose the "floating head" is to draw in adult and younger crowds. Paramount is not known for their artwork. Fortunately, they are known for their extras.

I was pretty surprised by how much I liked this film. I kept hearing so many negative things, I thought it'd be terrible. But I walked out really enjoying it. Not a day 1 for me, but will pick it up on sale for $14.99

That would've been a really nice cover. Poor Paramount.
If they actually used at one of the posters as the cover, it would be an instant buy.
Even though it's silly for purchasing a movie by the cover, the movie was a mixed bag for me. The afterlife scenes really lost me in terms of art direction. Too happy and colorful for my taste. Tucci really did an amazing job here. It's probably the only reason why I would want to watch it again.
Other than that, it's a pass for me unfortunately.

Awesome first 45 minutes but it just loses its way and tries to throw in some comic elements but they dont need to be there. The main story is great but it just gets lost
I actually like the artwork. Haven`t seen the film yet though...

I actually liked it almost as much as the book. I just wished they would have focused a little more on the family and less on Susie in heaven, that's where I felt it differed from the book.

Just watched at the theater this afternoon. Amazing film, towards the ending well make you cry!
i'll catch it when it comes out, rent it i mean
"A Thrilling Adventure." Did Rex Reed actually watch this movie?

Still pissed that the DVD doesn't get any extra features. Really makes me mad.

^ Agreed, screw laying down money I don't have on a bluray player right now, I don't have to get screwed when I can screw them back and feel better about it. I mean their the ones wasting how much plastic on slipping in those stupid digital copies, it's like asking for people to *share* movies.
I wanted to see this, but due to bad and mixed reviews I avoided it in theatres. Might check it out sometime. The artwork is horrible. It's almost insulting being interested in graphic design these days when you see how companies seem to hire straight out of elementary schools these days when it comes to stuff like this.

i REALLY liked this movie. and it STILL pisses me off the DVD'ers get screwed over while BR'ers get the real deal treatment. thank god i get my movies OTHER ways.
This movie was a mixed bag. That cover is horrendously bad.
no thanks. this movie was AWFUL!
Maybe a rental but I will see when I'm really in the mood.
The artwork didn't catch me at all. The girl's face looks more like a statue than she's actually in heaven.

Agreed! The theatrical poster artwork is almost always superior to whatever they cobble together for the video release. I've not seen this one yet, but based on the reviews and word-of-mouth, I'm definitely going to at least add it to the rental queue.
Considering Minority Report, Collateral and the recent Up In The Air covers. This is the BETTER artwork of them all. I dig it a lot. Of course I wanted this one: http://moviecrematorium.com/wp-content/uploads/... But this does it too.
P.S To increase the sales when its released, I wonder why Paramount didn't feel like slapping an Academy Awards Nomination logo listing off Stanley Tucci as Best Supporting Actor. They should do it.

Awesome! Still have not seen this yet, and most likely it's leaving theatres as I type this. Read the book, it was quite good. We'll have to see how well it acts as a movie. Slightly OT, how come DVD / blu ray releases NEVER use the movie posters?? Keep it consistent!
They should have had the one with Tucci and her on the cover, that looks much more scary and ominous.
Paramount have been consistently put out god-awful artwork. Shame.
