When you say WE do you mean the USA, Scandinavia, Europe???
I guess I meant "we" as in Malick fans, and I'd assume it'll be released in more places than merely R1...
My source, well, I'd say the film's producer is a pretty good source
http://www.weeklydig.com/index.cfm/issueID/4f27...
She's mentioned the extended cut in at least 5 interviews.
Obviously the 'Village Voice' blurb above.
Jeffrey Wells...
"I checked with New Line publicity and it's true: there will be an extra-long version of Terrence Malick's The New World on the DVD. That means longer than the 155-minute New York-and-LA version that closed last Tuesday night, and obviously much longer than the 137- or 138-minute version that will re-open on 1.20.06."
DP Emmanuel Lubezki:
"About the ~3 hour dvd version of the film: There will be a much extended sequence of underwater footage in the beginning of the film (he thought possibly 12 minutes). He says this footage is incredible."
Enough, Bradavon?

I loved this movie. If the Oscars meant anything Best Picture race would be between this, "Capote," "Best of Youth," "Squid and the Whale," and "2046."
well I was eagerly waiting to watch this movie couldn't watch it in theaters here in Lebanon because since the 14th of february 2005 (the assassination of the ex prime minister) and untill today big movies like this one have been delayed during crisis moments.although it would have been great to watch it on a big screen I guess i'll have to satisfy myself with a 29 inch TV.I loved Pochahontas and i'll surely love this movie, but will there be an extended director's cut version??
Erm
What on earth does this mean on the menus?:
"Audio Optimised for DVD no Re-equalisation required?"
Of course it's optimised for DVD, it's a DVD???

"But, more importantly, she said New Line has agreed to release an extended cut of the film, even longer than the 155 minute cut, to DVD. Again, this was info straight from Producer Sarah Green."
"Green: Terry cut it immediately for DVD and was pleased with the extended version."

Get in line. And while we at it, we should send a leg-breaker to collect from Oliver Stone.

I was anticipating the release of this film since I first heard of it, yet it never hit a theatre close to where I live. The film had so much oscar hype, yet fell of the radar before it was released. I`m picking this up for sure.
Cool menus.
it was okay imo !
According to J. Hoberman of the 'Village Voice', Malick is indeed working on a three hour cut for release on DVD. Perhaps if it is not on this version, it will be released a few months later a la the 'Black Hawk Down' three disc version or the super-duper 'Sin City' version.

Art in its highest form! Yet another masterpiece from my favorite director, Terrence Malick! His films are always amazing, and always feel as if youre reliving the memories a soul has experienced.
Wow, a decent DVD cover art.

The first and last 45 minutes were great. But the middle (also 45 minutes long) just dragged on and on... Still, a good movie well worth seeing, especially if you're a history buff or fan of Malick.
I liked this film.
I thought this film was stunning. I kind of found it to be a counterpart to Thin Red Line. This being a film about celebrating humanity, while Thin Red Line examined the dark nature of it. I also wish Hans Zimmer composed it instead of Horner, he did his best work on Thin Red Line with Malick.
Since I'm in no hurry to see this (unlike King Kong), I'll wait till the extended cut comes out.

The only real negative I have heard about this film is Colin Farrell's performance. Supposedly it would have been better if Christian Bale had the lead instead.
Excellent. I heard this was great.
IT HASN'T EVEN COME OUT TO AUSTRALIA YET!!!???
SUCH A GREAT MOVIE. Screamingly underrated, I hope this makes it's money on dvd. Awesome editing, unconventional, beautiful cinematography & a return to form with the score by James Horner.
The movie looks great from the trailers. I liked The Thin Red Line and hope they release a SE of that movie with the deleted scenes and characters Malick cut out. It is shame we don't get deleted scenes since this is the 135 minute cut of The New World.
It dragged on. It felt longer than King Kong
I really tried to like this movie. The friends I saw it with all thought it was one of the worst movies they had ever seen. Another couple in the theatre jokingly said, "Lets see it again!" when it ended, and then mumbled about how they would've rather stayed home.
I wouldn't say it was that bad, but it was boring and ridiculously pretentious. A gorgeous film, without intrigue or substance: I'll pass. Nice coverart, though.

This is one of the most beautifully shot movies I've ever seen. I was very pleasantly surprised with this one for some reason, even though I loved all the other Malick movies I've seen, I guess it was the fact that he wanted to re-edit it after it was released....
I heard that this was either excellent or really bad, I'm intrested in see it.

I hope they release both versions for archival purposes, but I'd still rather watch the 135 min version.
Intresting, for the first bit. Great idea, for the seond.

Yeah, its the 135minute cut. Sorry for not making it clear.
Looks super boring and Colin still owes me for the time and money I spent sitting through the piece of c**p that was Alexander. But I'll rent it solely on Colin's presence.
This never got out to the theaters near me. It's a shame, would of saw it if it did.

I don't even remembered seeing this in theatres..I guess I miss it..oh well! I'll give it a rent. Heard it was good.
I heartily enjoyed the film, and Malick's approach to the material. I thought it was absorbing, methodical, and uniquely beautiful. At the same time I don't blame those who didn't care for the film. I've actually never really cared for Malick before, but this is one effort that really worked for me (I was distracted by the never-ending cameo parade of A-listers in "The Thin Red Line."
I'm interested in seeing the longer version (I caught the film on it's wide theatrical release so I didn't get to see the original cut.) I've heard this shorter version is actually more accesible and has a better flow. Any word on multiple versions?

Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn.
i might give this a watch but it would probably bore me but it's got colin farrell and I love him<3 whoa that girl is as old as me and she got to make out w/ colin! NOW that is luck, you wouldnt have to pay me!!
I hear this will be the 135 minute cut btw. Fingers crossed the UK R2 will be uncut but that will mean more waiting :-|
i'll buy this, I fell to sleep near the end sadly and I loving it
I got to see this at the cinema. Erm... the Emporer's not wearing any clothes really. It's Malick. And that's exactly what you get. It just completely lacks the sense of awe present in his other films. Maybe he should have waited another couple of decades. Having said this - I'll buy it and give it another go.
I finally managed to see this in the cinema last weekend in the UK. It was the 150 minute cut.
I liked the cinematography and the soundtrack more than the actual content, but it definitely had its moments. I would still buy it as it looked beautiful and the hour long doc sounds ok too.

Fantastic I can't wait to see this. I'll be getting the DVD for sure. I hope it will be worth the 5+ months wait.
Will it be the shorter 135 minute USA cut or the 150 minute DC though? Yep it was cut in the US as pre-release audiences thought it was to long. I believe internationally it was uncut.
The UK distributors decided to drop a bomb and only release this on VERY limited release in the UK. I've wanted to see it for months.
You'd think they want us to get hold of a bootleg, idiots!

Especially when you look at the extras for previous Mallick films, virtually nothing.

Beautiful movie with excellent cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki and a star-making performance by Q'Orianka Kilcher.
My only problem was that it could have been edited a bit better.
