I missed the first old edition of this film. Will totally pick this up. For anyone huffing and puffing of the digital copy Disney said they are putting extras on the digital copy too.
Doesn't anyone realize that Tim Burton did NOT direct this?
Great movie and nice to see it getting the treatment it deserves. A few hopes. Will they include the 3D version on the blu-ray? And how about the collectable art on blu too? GREAT FILM - can't wait.

Yes I think everyone knows that.
Yes I think everyone knows that.
The 3-D version is of course not included because there is no way to recreate it properly on home video. It's more than just the c**ppy red-and-blue 3-D.
I do think lots of people are unaware that Selick directed.

Actually, not many people know that. every time i ask someone that claims to "love" Tim Burton what their favorite movie of his is, they include this in the list. When I inform them that Burton did not direct it, they say i am mistaken and don't know what im talking about. But i don't blame them, after all its always referenced as "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas"

I should have specified, I think most people who frequent this site, would know he isn't the director..
Also it's not uncommon for a producer to put his name above a title (Wes Craven does it all the time)

Burton also wrote it, which is more that likely why it is referred to as "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" Plus he was the main creative force behind the production. I'm sure it's a different style of directing when you're working with clay or animation. But I'm sure Tim had a lot of input for Henry Selick about how he envisioned things.

TB didn't do the actual writing though, he came up with the storyline and characters, and other people wrote it all up.
But because it's his story, and he produced it, it's justified having "Tim Burton's" in the title.
Off topic, why is Tom Cruise advertising himself (literally) on DVD Active?

I'll definately pick this up, seeing as for some reason the current DVD is insanely rare. I'm not really diggin that cover though. It looks like they're trying to reach out to Hot Topic croud who have an odd obsession with this movie...
Man, this is unnecessary, but I love that cover.
That cover is horrible compared to the current Special Edition's cover.
Also, this is missing "Frankenweenie" and the crazy-huge gallery of concept art and whatnot.
So basically the only new things on here are the narrated poem (which is awesome), that 'Holiday Mansion Tour' thing and the digital copy? If thats it, this is NOT worth the upgrade, especially considering that ugly cover.

Blu all the way! Specially for a film like this.
I hope the LE comes in BD.
Even though I own the previous edition, this film is a classic and I will definitely be getting this. The coverart isn't bad but I think it needs some work. It's not as beautifully dark as the film.
DOn't own this one. May have to get the Bluray.
its about Freaking Time how many other c**p movies got sevral relases before a classic like this gets a realease anyway the blu ray looks beautifull theres a preview in national treasure 2 it looks like a whole new movie and will be a must buy for me

you must not care about picture quality than cause the transfer they used for the orignal dvd was really poor and has been screaming for a better transfer

Oh well...
...bang goes the rather nice DTS track found on the original R1 edition.
As much as we love the movie, and we watch it every Christmas Eve without fail, it's easy to come away thinking that the message of the film is: "Stick to what you are good at, don't try anything new, as it will only end up a crashing disaster".
It's nice that the new edition is finally anamorphic, but most of the new stuff falls into the category of "Malibu Stacy has a new hat".
A considered purchase if you already have it.

Finally, August is releasing a great DVD. I'll buy that one for sure. This was one of Disney's greatest animation films before Pixar and possibly their best animated film that was made before Pixar.

In what sense is it unnecessary? Clearly two of the already released DVD's have un-anamorphic widescreen transfers, with this one it is already Anamorphic Widescreen a more enhanced picture with remastered soundtrack, and also on High Definition Blu-ray for the very first time. What is so unnecessary about that? Is a must own double dip, because this time around the whole disc improves.

Hoorah! This is a definite buy!
A reasonable cover for once.....
I'm glad I held off on the old one just for the reason it was unanamorphic, this looks like a much better release, will definately pick up. If only they could release the 3-D version for home viewing, saw it for the first time in theaters last year and was actually impressed.
I don't get it. I know Walt Disney Pictures handled the theatrical rights for the 3-D re-release, but why isn't Touchstone handling the home video rights for this release?
Ooh, Movie Dude, good point. Does this mean the new DVD now has the opening credits edited for Disney? Or will it remain as Touchstone.
It would be nice if some of the extras on the fabulously exhaustive Laserdisc box-set were included in this new version.
In the transition from Laserdisc to DVD, the extras have been "Disneyified" and, if memory serves, most of the material that was on the LD featuring interviews with the cast and the more "nuts & bolts" aspects of the makign of the movie were omitted. A great pity really.
It certainly is true - as my brother mentioned in an earlier post on here - that the message of the movie seems to be "don't have ideas above your station; don't have ambitious or dreams - they will only end in disaster"
