The characters, although portrayed by good actors, were not even paper thin. Dialogue was stupid, so was the screeplay. It was a mess; this is not torture porn, it's SELF-INFLICTED INJURY PORN.
The way the story is built is also pathetic : teens party, they get at the ruins, suffer, and leave the ruins. It' a lousy ride to a lousier ending.
Being a good horror fan, I had heard it was somehow above average. Well, dear fiends, it's nothing BUT average-- and not in a 'mildly satisfying' way.
It'll leave you angry once it's over.
What a hoax.
But the blue artwork I think is beautiful. It's evocative and very frightening. The red tint with the 'unrated' tag sucks though.I dont recall ANY porn in The Ruins.

I love the blue artwork, but I want the Unrated version. I wish they could have just put an "Unrated" stamp on the blue artwork for the "Unrated" version.
SPOILER
Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was really disappointed by this film. The trailer looked terrifying and gave me chills, even after watching it multiple times. I liked the concept, but having the plant talk and make noise really ruined it for me, no pun intended. However, I did enjoy the last 10-15 minutes. Intense!

Illi Mai, how can you put "The Strangers" in the same category as Prom Night, Shutter and One Missed Call? The Strangers is one of the best horror movies in a long time. Way better than all of those s**tty PG-13 remakes you mentioned. Anyways, the book was good and I missed the movie in theaters, but I heard mixed reviews. I'll be getting the unrated.
The Ruins is miles better than c**p like Prom Night, The Strangers, Shutter, One Missed Call, and the like.....
Unrated for sure.....
Unrated for sure.....
Will definitely buy the movie. I loved it and it's one of the year's best horror movies.
Is it just me, or does the unrated label look like a neon sign?

Sorry. We don't mean to but it's weird how Hollywood gives us Prom night and other PG-13's that aren't scary and then teens only say it's cool becuase they are talking really loud when the movie is playing and not shuting up. Then when their adult has to take them they be quiet and just say it's c**p.

Don't get crazy. I liked The ruins. But Iron man was seriously better.

Okay, I'm convinced!
Okay, I'm convinced!
Wait til it's on tv, I'm excited for Mirrors w/Kiefer Sutherland. Aja handles blood and violence better than the rest shoved out every month. The blue cover looks a lot like Pan's Labyrinth minus The Ruins title.

Definitely picking up the unrated cut. I liked this one.
this movie was good u dumb idiots.....gawd some ppl just dont kno a good horror movie when they see one...

awesome movie one of the best i have seen so far this year
worst was prom night
worst was prom night
The people that say this was bad are the idiots who liked 'Prom Night'. I liked it a lot it wasn't some watered down PG-13 it was really good and it was believable. I'm picking it up.
And the weirdest thing about this movie, Ben Stiller is the producer. Then again, Ivan Reitman, director of comedies like "Ghostbusters", produced "Disturbia", so, maybe it's not so weird.
For those curious, the unrated cut runs aprox. 6 minutes longer than the rated cut.
I agree that the blue tint works better and I also wish the blue was used on the unrated edition's cover. I went into this movie expecting extreme gore and it ended up delivering a more psychological horror movie. It does have some gore though. While I am more of a gorehound when it comes to horror movies, I still liked this movie for what it did. Plus, if I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have seen the trailer for The Strangers. I saw that movie Saturday and it was awesome.
Loved this movie, favourite of '08 so far. Best horror flick in years. Will be picking up the unrated, although I kind of like the rated cover better.
I think the blue works better but I'll go for the unrated.
I enjoyed the movie, but yeah I doubt I would want to buy this.
it is a toss up whether the blue or red tint works best on the cover art. part of me wishes the blue tint was used on the unrated cover.

No is that actually it WAS bad, this was my top despised film of 2008, a bad start for 2008 as well.
Great covers though.

Why is that the 'Unrated' covers are always tinted red? Grrr...
I agree, not a bad little flick. Two things for me, i WISH both cuts were on the blu ray, why not ya know? It's got space and second i wonder what the other ending was. I will rent this for the features and to see it once more but its not a buy. I just dont think a lot of horror films have replay value.
This actually wasn't bad. But I wouldn't buy it.
