They do this sort of stuff for games and anime as well. Character figurines, OSTs, soundtrack remix albums, artbooks, tinboxes, deluxe woodboxes...
*Yawn* Expensive superfluous crap to me. I just want the actual film and extras discs, preferably housed in standard amarays.

You know , I've only recently learned that it is , in fact, possible to write 'dts' without any exclamation marks at all

just remember that the R2 3 disc set has an amazing package and the only one with DTS!!!
True our Far Eastern cousins do love to make more of an effort when it comes to Limited Edition packaging.
But they usually pay just as much attention to the audio/video transfer - perhaps more so than US/UK/AUS distributors. In general, Region 3 and Japanese Region 2 discs are arguably some of the best DVDs in the world.

The R1 I hear has better AV than the UK R2.

Huh? It looks normal to me for an LE.

I am all for a terrific transfer and a nicely rendered insert in a keep case... maybe a slip cover as well... thats all that motivates me...you can keep all that other crap.

Not a word of what actually matters, i.e. *the contents of the discs*. When the "Shawshank Anniversary" came out, I chose the UK R2 edition, for the third disc with interviews, but the US R1 looked tempting, too, with some exclusive features, including an alleged animated parody of the film. I wonder if, perhaps, this releases will combine the features of both previous ones... :\

Just..wow. That's huge. What is up with all these movies getting these fantastic special editions in japan!
That is a sweet set. I really like all the packaging especially the tin. I am quite happy with my R2 3 disc though.
That's the sickest box set I think I've ever seen in terms of quality items that tie-in. They even throw it in the lunch box/tin from the end.
Boooooo Japan....Boooooo!
Boooooo Japan....Boooooo!

If anyone is willing to pay £52/¥10290 for essentially nice packaging and fancy extras then they're crazy!
It's not like it's HD quality.

I want one! but I already have my original R4 copy which does the job and no room in the house

They get all the good stuff!
Wow indeed
A great looking set for a really great movie.
Wow
Wow, that looks awsome but also very expensive.
