The Star Wars Trilogy (DVD)
Major audio flaws found in the newly released trilogy boxed set
From IMDb.com
Fans of John Williams are up in arms over an apparent glitch in the new Star Wars DVD set in which the left and right channels fed to the rear speakers in surround sound are reversed in the original Star Wars movie (Episode 4). John Takis, who frequently analyzes film scores for Internet groups, points out that the violins can be heard coming from the left surround-sound speakers and the cellos from the left. "It is essentially a 124-minute audio glitch," Takis writes on the John Williams fansite, www.JW-Music.net. "The sound effects are correctly positioned in the surround channels. It's just the music that's backwards." Takis also takes issue with other aspects of the sound mix for the original movie. "Remember the awesome fanfare version of the Force theme that kicks off the Death Star battle?" he writes "Good luck hearing it this time around—it's virtually inaudible."

I was going to say it's not his fault, but he probably did hear the final mix before it went to press.
A penny saved...make that 7000 pennies.

The reason I say this is because Lucasfilms was asked about these errors, and they issued a press release saying that all supposed errors are "creative changes". Yeah, right. I'm glad I saved my money.

i would wait
I would wait for the advent of Blu-ray/HD-DVD to buy these movies
your question answer
because they say when a jedi or sith dies he looks like the way he was when he was with the light when anakin was last with the light he look like the way he is in episode 3 thats why they changed it to that i say that was cool
also the emperors voice is changed in episode 5 to the new one and boba feits voice is now the equal to jangos hey they are the same person u know

That's years away. Why deny yourself the opportunity of owning the films simply because they will eventually come out on a superior format? If eveyone waited for updated versions of films no one would ever buy anything.
Matt
Why? You'll then have something else to complain about, because the 30th Anniversary HD will be even more different from the current release, probably both visually and sonically.

No, Anakin gains redemption by saving Luke from the Emperor, hence returning to the light side of the Force. It’s been that way for twenty years and it worked fine (in fact, it worked very well). What really bothers me about the change is the terrible job they've done. Hayden Christensen looks like a child molester.
They've not only changed the Emperor's voice in Empire, but the whole hologram. Again, while this establishes continuity, they've done a terrible job with the make-up (and Palpatine now sounds like he's stoned).
Finally, just because you clone someone it doesn't mean that they have the same accent. Accents aren't inherited. There's some argument that Boba could have the same accent as he was raised by Jango for twelve years, but it was yet another unnecessary change when weighed against the other things that needed fixing (such as Luke’s lightsaber deactivation on Hoth).

These are George Lucas's films. If he wants to change them, he will change them. If you don't like it, deal with it.

If anyone's interested, this was Lucasfilm's responce:
"We are always impressed with how closely fans listen to the many different sound mixes we have made for the Star Wars movies over the years. It is flattering to know that, indeed, the audience is listening. Consequently, each mix comes out differently and any changes that you hear on the all-new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX tracks on the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set are deliberate creative decisions. We can confirm that there are no technical glitches as has been reported."

Don't tell me to deal with it. I'm perfectly entitled to voice my opinion on whatever topic I see fit. Just because Lucas has the power to change them it doesn't mean it's a good idea. As a filmmaker he opens himself up to the same criticism that any artist has to endure, especially when his alterations have a detrimental effect. Most filmmakers who release director's cuts at least have the decency to inform people (the new changes aren't even acknowledged) and usually offer both versions of the film. Anyway, this article isn't about the changes, it's about the poor quality control. For the length of time they've had this release should have been perfect.
I read IGN review back when it was first posted, and it's not particularly in-depth. Why do you assume I'm going to alter my opinion based on a review anyway?

Burtt
If there's anyone who's probably to blame for this, it's Ben Burtt. Listen to his commentary bits on Attack of the Clones -- constantly undermining Williams' score while praising his sound effects. He does the same during the ESB commentary. As sound editor, in all honesty it wouldn't shock me if he did this over Lucas' head.
...
My parents bought it for me at Sams Club here in Miami, FL for $44! Its an excellent set.
Does anyone know if there will be a recall like the Back to The Future set? Will 20th Century Fox fix the problem and re-issue non-defective sets?
No recall because it is not a glitch, the sound is ment to be that way...
This didn't need it's own thread, i don't think, as it's NOT an audio glitch.
Even when Lucasfilm themselves say it isn't, some people just can't leave Lucasfilm alone.
For God's sake - his movies, his DVD, his creation. If you're really worked up about something so rediculous, i'm suprised...
Suppose it'll make the AEs more popular if they advertise the fact it's getting a brand new score (Williams said this in Empire Magazine a few years back, that he'd be re-scoring all 6 films together as one, for the 2007 DVDs).

Personally, I like this set and believe it was worth the price paid. The "audio glitch" did not bother me as much as the Hayden add-on at the end of ROTJ.

And you believe everything they say, right? There are no image problems with the TPM DVD. No sir, not a single one...
Fact of the matter is that consumers have a right to express their opinions on products they have spent money on. Why would they stereo reverse the score for Star Wars and not the sequels?

By "Star Wars" i take it you mean Episode IV (proper title since 1979, so i think we should call it that).
I don't know - it's probably just something he wanted to do to annoy the "Original versions ONLY" "fans" out there - only they would be particularly bothered or notice it and be annoyed.
General audiences wouldn't notice, so it's probably part of Lucas's revenge to the people he dislikes (the "other" fans in the community).

Don't be facetious. The kind of people who would be annoyed by this are those who expect the best quality from their DVDs. If a DVD has technical issues then I’m going to pick up on them—it’s kind of the point of sites such as this. By your reckoning anyone who isn’t desperate for a taste of Lucas’ table scraps isn’t a true “fan” (however you feel the need to qualify that). Give me a break. I’ve been watching these films for decades; I’ve given him plenty of financial support; I know far more about Star Wars than is probably healthy for a grown man—none of this means I’m above critiquing the films or the technical merits of the DVDs. People didn’t get upset when virtually every website criticised the transfer on TPM. Why now is it unacceptable to make any critical judgements about these DVDs? Oh, and the 'A New Hope' title was added in 1981 smart arse.

When did Lucasfilm ever issue a statement that the TPM DVD image quality was perfect?

I'll be picking this up whenever. I don't really care what Lucas does to the trilogy. Like someone said before it's his movies. Let him do what he wants.
Also Chris about Anakin saving Luke and bring him back to the light side bit. How is one good deed automatically gonna turn him back to the light side? Plus Lucas explains the change in the commentary.

Wait...
You'll pick up on it, Chris? DVDFile didn't pick up on it. Home Theater Forum didn't pick up on it. DigitalBits didn't pick up on it. Everybody whose "job it is" do pick up on these things missed it. It wasn't until Neil flooded the internet that anybody noticed.

Fair go, though. That's a pretty obscure glitch and one that the lamen wouldn't notice in a million years. Reviewers aren't meant to be perfect, and in essence it shows that only die-hard fans or serious audiophiles need to worry about the problem. It's no surprise that reviewers didn't pick up on it. When was the last time one of us made sure the musical score was coming from the correct channels?

I agree
And I didn't mean for that post to come off as an attack. But Chris seems pretty sure that it's an audible glitch any DVD reviewer would pick up on, and none of them dead. It's not nearly as "obvious" as someone would have you believe.
TO BE HONEST WITH YOU I DIDN'T REALLY REALIZE THE SCORE WAS WRONG ON EPISODE 4 BUT I WAS WONDERING WHY IT FELT THAT THE OTHER EPISODES WERE LOUDER IN WAYS IN TERMS OF EFFECTS AND SCORE
Lucas is the best thing in the world!
Lucas Rulz!!!! Period!!!!!!
Lucas Rocks,He made the best movies ever,STARWARS!
