WOW!
dsman71, your little temper tantrum there was a bit pathetic. Adrian's right—you don't need to get insulting. Besides, you're wrong anyway. There are always going to be parts of a movie (like the ice skating scene you've mentioned several times) that not everybody likes; that doesn't make a movie a poorly-made film. If you could actually recogonize good film making, you'd know that you don't have to like the content for a film to be well-made.

Well, there is no need to be insulting or condescending.

Just because you think it is a very good movie doesnt mean it wasnt junk.
He may have liked the subject matter, but the movie sucked. You never convince me otherwise.
"the reverence which he used to make the remake" ? LOL
He wanted a big budget KK under his vision & I dont think having a wannabe Fay Wray falling for a 50 ft ape and going ice skating in New York defies everything

You will never convince me (or likely anyone else that liked the movie) that it was not a well made movie.

KK 05 was junk..rewatch it & see if you really like it. Nothing like watching Kong and his lover going ice skating in central park...ann darow in this picture was awful and Fay Wray is flipping over in her grave(God rest her soul)
KK 05 was one of the worst films ever and Id rather watch the 1976 Kong over the 2005 Kong. Maybe they better just stop remaking the movie because nothing can touch the 1933 version almost 75 years later..
Why dont they remake a bad film like Manos the Hands of Fate or Monster A G0-GO, Bride of the Monster, Sinister Urge, Beginning of the End, or something from MST3K - at least there is a chance a remake would be better..actaully when Larry Buchanan remade a lot of AIP films of the 1950s like Eye Creatures of a couple of movies from Roger Corman, etc..they were worse...so maybe original classic movies should just be left alone & let people come up with their own ideas...
Like Snakes on a Plane ?

As much I thought King Kong would be awful and make no money whatsoever. I thought the film was very good. Highly underrated. I see no need to re-watch it or wait for the inevitable extended edition but it was 3hrs that I enjoyed.
Alien also came from "John Carpenters Dark Star' a movie I have not got my hands on yet butit has come up a bit in a few of the Alien docs.
Well it is a remake, not an exact scene for scene remake. Q was an updated version of The Flying Serpent from 1942 starring George Zucco. Q was a modern day(at that time) version of the Aztec bird legend. It was a loose remake where the new movie had no scenes relevant to the 1940s version, but it is still a re-touch. Sort of like how the 1976 Kong was remade where scenes were different/altered.
Q was a modern day look at the 1940s Flying Serpent, taken to new levels as Q was in a modern city eating people. There was a lot more gore & nudity whereas the Flying Serpent was black & white & clocks in around an hour. The premise is the same where a man summons the monster & it is a Quezacoatl Aztec Bird. You can also say the Alien was a modern day version of another movie It! The Terror from Beyond Space. Discussing these makes me want to pop em in my DVD playeer
YUMMY movies !

My list of top 10 remakes(even though this doesnt mean they're better than the original (well the first 2 anyway)The others I havent seen &/or my list of remakes isnt large...
The Fly, the Blob, The Thing, Cape Fear, Walking Tall, The Bat Whispers, Batman, The Nutty Professor,Q the Winged Serpent, A Christmas Carol with George C Scott
My least favorites are the Fog, Texas Chainsaw Massacre,Dracula 1979, Willy Wonka(Charlie & the Chocolate Factory), Hercules with Lou Ferrigno, The Haunting, Red Dragon , all of those Arkoff movies that were remade in title only (AKA She Creature, the Spider)
I watch a lot of movies

Since I haven't picked up any edition of this moive when it came out (I just knew they were going to release a 2-disc edition) I'll most likely pick this up. And Leatherface looks like a carboard cut out.
Never seen this movie, but it's one that I've wanted to see for a long time. I'll probably end up buying this edition.
I'm going to say that it'll probably be the same stuff we've always seen.
Here's my list of favorite remakes:
Scarface
The 10 Commandments
Dawn of the Dead
Cape Fear
The Fly
The Thing
The Magnificent Seven
Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The 1939 Wizard of Oz yes if you want to call it a remake.Red Dragon was a crummy remake of the movie Manhunter, which was bad already. Silence of the Lambs is the still the best of all these
Wizard of Oz from 1939 was a remake of several short & silent films that were inferior to the 1939 version. I really dont think it should count as a remake in the sense that it is not a modern or remotely recent update ala Red Dragon, The Blob, The Fly, Cape Fear, Superman even...as 1939 was many moons ago. I thought the Wiz sucked also...

At least 40 Adrian. Old films remade with no-name actors & try to revise scenes thinking it is an improvement when it really isnt
Another remake I liked, but still the original was better -
CAPE FEAR !
When I think of all the remakes of classics & these new horror movies like The Fog, Halloween Ressurection, Jason X, Williard, King Kong,Hostel, Wolf Creek, Fear.com,The Grudge, Ghost Ship, The Cave, The Ring(USA),ad nauseum, & waste 90-120 minutes to watch them to see if they were any good, now I feel like the stupid one. Inept no name actors directed by & produced by people who know they can make a quick buck...even the Superman remake was Superpoor, I wish there was something original with actors who understand and appreicate the genre...
Glad I like Disney movies

I just don't get this one at all. I loved the original Hills Have Eyes. But, the things you could get away in the 70s, are pretty stupid in a modern horror movie. It's like these people had never seen a horror movie in their lives! How many dumb decisions can you make in 90 minutes?

From KK05 I would have
Cut the entire film LOL
Well the first hour to the Island - cut
All scenes of Ann falling in love with Kong including a night of ice skating & potential beastiality
I would have had anyone but Jack Black as Denham, someone older, without being in a comedy film, and being more robust with lines(the eighth wonder of the world!!!) Too bad Robert Armstrong isnt around

Man he looks fat.
Tastes are fine man, and don't get me wrong, HHE '06 was the only one I listed that I think is a definite improvement on the original. Again, I said good remakes, not great ones, or even better ones in that original statement. Personally I liked KK, though it was overlong and I know exactly what I'd cut out.
The remake of Williard, thanks for reminding me, what a waste of 90+ minutes. That was god awful
The only thing I liked the Gabe liked was NOTLD the 90s version, although it cant compare to the original 1968 superior horror classic.
Sorry to disagree with you Tony, but KK 05 was a piece of poo..
Nothing like a woman that likes to go ice skating with a 50 foot ape and willingly wants to be in her hand. The SPFX were ok, just that the cast was miscast. Jack Black as Denham was plain wrong. And the girl playing Ann Darrow, I wish Kong dropped HER off the Empire State Building, she was totally awful as Ann. God what a lousy movie with unlikable characters..and stupid scenarios..Ooooh ,man, the more I think of it that whole movie stunk pee-yew...
We all have our tastes so sorry to disagree with you Tony & Gabe...

Oh man, Willard was so much fun! I especially liked the music video Glover did for the DVD. I could watch near anything so long as he's in it.
Hmm... that list is missing quite a lot of titles. Might add some to it when I have time... or at least it was when it was the Wikipedia list.
Thomas Crowne Affair and Scarface were bot modest improvements over their originals, here's a nice list of American remakes of foreign films, I bet most readers didn't even know some of these were remakes. I know the non-movie buff types I hang out with are always shocked by the sheer number of Asian horror remakes, not to mention Queen Latifa's Taxi.
Willard was a low key movie, and not really worth 8 bucks to see in the theater, but I did enjoy it, especially Glover's performance.
And I have to agree with Matt pretty much exactly on HHE '06, even though I wish I could say I enjoyed the original.
I said "good" remakes, not great ones. Other than Maltese Falcon, which I always forget, I really can't think of one.
Unless you count original films that utilize existing work as a base, like Once Upon a Time in the West, The Big Lebowski, or the millions of 1984 based Sci-Fi films.

Eh...I think the original Hills Have Eyes is c**p and Craven's way overrated, but I thought the remake was decent in a guilty pleasure sort of way...still wouldn't call it great but it was better than the original. Just read the other day that Day of the Dead is on it's way and will star Ving Rhames...

Add Ocean's Eleven to good remakes, along with the Maltese Falcon, the 1936 version of Show Boat, the 1954 version of A Star is Born, Sorcerer (a remake of the French film Wages of Fear) and the Big Lewbowski (which is basically a remake of The Big Sleep.)

I thought King Kong was a real great remake, probably the best one I have saw since the Dawn of the Dead remake. Also have to say that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was pretty good too, along with the Hills Have Eyes remake. Those are four remakes I wouldn't mind to watch.
The original TTCSM is NOT overrated. It's a great cult classic that had sucky sequels (just didn't see Leatherface yet, but all the other ones I saw). I'll see the prequel in theaters, looks interesting.

I also have TCM2 and Leatherface 3. I do like those 3 films. I felt an updated remake of TCM with namless nobodies for stars wasnt needed. I think the original pretty much made it's statement to the world in all its grittiness. Anyway, studios want to cash in on $$$ & save money by hiring no-name stars for their remakes...

Bah, both the remakes of TCM & Fog were junk. I didnt watch the Amityville Horror remake. The Fog by Carpenter is a good movie, the original TCM is also really good but not for the squeamish. I cant recall which was worse as far as remakes TCM or the Fog, but here are 2 remakes I like better than the originals
The Blob
The Fly

More shocking stuff for me to digest.

True that. The Fog was a horrible mess. The thing that totally killed it, besides the incomprehensible and lame climax was the fact that they focused too much on the flashback story, which took out a lot of the mystery and humanized the ghosts too much. Having seen this, Ghost Ship, Fear.com, Hostel, The Fog and Wolf Creek, and the Cave in recent memory, all I can say is thank god there are classic films to fall back on.

The Pioneer region one releases were all the same release with different packaging; they released it two different times, the second time was when the remake was released and that disc had the option of limited edition packaging. This set from Dark Sky is an all-new package, and, judging by some of their past releases, if you're a fan of the film I highly suspect that it'll be time to chuck Pioneer's measly single-layer release out the window in favor of this one.
Man... I dunno. I grew up watching all horror movies, and although I appreciate the cult aspect of this film, I never liked it as much as many others. I recently re-watched it, and it was better than I remembered. I bought one of the DVD versions came out recently (about the same time the re-make came out, which I bought, too), but I know I know I will pass on this multi-dipper.
A lot of people absolutely love this so I can appreciate that I am probably in the minority but I saw this a while ago on TV and I was either bored or laughing all the way through it. Hasnt this been double (triple) dipped?
Really. If anything, this film isn't rated highly enough.
one of the all time classics................seriously underrated for a low budget old movie
One of the most over rated pieces of rubbish ever......
All this time I kept my pioneer DVD, one of a few movies I didnt double dip
Can't Wait for this. I can't believe I have to wait until late september!
DVDEmpire has it going for $22.90. With tax, you're paying around $25 for it. I would hold off on that. Of course, I got the last SE for free when buying the Platinum Series New Line remake two years ago (haven't watched it yet).

The only real people who would get this are either people with HDTV's, people who love re-releases, and idots who think that buying this would be so cool. They should stop making this version, and make a version with a longer cut, like 10 minutes or so, HD on another disc, and every special feature they ever released on another disc with 3 different types of covers from the previous re-releases to choose from, or a newer one.
Hmmm... might get this. Sounds good.
I must have this! Really, for 3 reasons: a)better audio b)STEELBOOK PACKAGING!!!! c)anamorphic transfer. The added extras are great too, but I doubt I'll ever watch them.
The Dark Sky Films website is also mentioning steelbook packaging and a new 5.1 audio mix. This is the first I've heard this news.
* Definitive 2-disc edition with all new extras in limited STEELBOOK packaging
* New 5.1 and 2.0 surround

Truly exicted for this one as I'm now a fan of Darks Sky releases after seeing the excellent job they did on Magic! This should be something special...
I can't believe how many people on here are complaining about another release of TCM. As a couple of people have pointed out, this will actually be the SECOND real release of this movie on Region 1 DVD. The Pioneer disc was non-anamorphic and they dropped the ball on the transfer anyway, not using the corrected version from the laserdisc. This will be the first time in the history of this movie that the film will be given an ANAMORPHIC transfer (excluding the Austrailian disc that had all sorts of bad interlacing issues). Those who say the film should look GRITTY don't understand that this doesn't mean the film should look S**TTY. A restored anamorphic picture should be the main reason to buy this release. Add to that the excellent Shocking Truth documentary that is premiering for the first time in the US, and a new commentary that includes the late Robert Burns and Paul Partain, and purchasing this release is an absolute NO BRAINER.
Fettastic, holy c**p you're right. Maybe I should pay closer attention. I bought the last release back in the hype surrounding the remake and didn't bother to compare them.
Kind of feel like an idiot now. Probably going to sell one of them towards this new one.

I have the cover art for this Dark Sky Release.
Also, if you think this is "madness", don't buy this edition. However, this will be better than the previous releases. I'm keeping my Pioneer 'cause it's out of print and I happen to like this movie alot.
Dark Sky is a great company. They currently brought us Magic on DVD & HENRY - a awesome transfer. Quit complaining.

Do we really need HD transfers of a film like this? This is rough ragged film making that's meant to look like the complete opposite of friggin HD!
Don't confuse HD trasnsfer with HD DVD. They are two different things. DVDs have benefitted from HD transfers for many years.

The first two are the exact same disc. This one should be a dramatic improvement.

Yes.
And am I not mistaken or is this not the technical fourth release?
Those previous being:
Original poster art cover
Shiny foil saw blade 30th anniversary
Ground chuck beef packaging
now this?
Madness.
The saw blade and the ground chuck were the same release. The chuck was a slipcover over the saw. These were just repackagings anyway. The disc was exactly the same. It was a transfer from the Pioneer laserdisc. This is the first time we're getting a different release. It also includes everything from that original Pioneer release as well as a wealth of new material.
If you can find it, you should also get the DVD Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Family Reunion. It's a feature-lengtyh documentary on the making of the original film.

Remake was great, far as remakes go. It's lightyears better than TCM 2, Leatherface, and The Next Generation, mind you. Here's to the prequel...
But the remake doesn't touch the greatness nor had the impact that the original had.

I loved the remake more than the original. are Lee Ermey gave the remake a lot of personality. I found the original boring with the annoying cripple and the god awful screaming through out the last twenty minutes of movie.
I'm hoping the prequel will be as entertaining.
Don't hate me.
P.S. The Omen 2006 sucked.

wow... I never could understand why everyone hated the remake so much... while I don't think is was the greatest film ever made, I personally thought it was a lot better then nearly every other horror film i've seen in the past few years.... (okay, let's make it like in the past decade.)
but, then again i'm no expert on horror films.... I used to be, but that was in the '80s.

i own the r2 2disc special edition so would this be worth double dipping for? is anyone else with the r2 se going to buy this?
i know this is a stupid question but do you need a hd dvd player to get the best possible picture for this or do you just need a hd tv to watch it on or is it both?
Matt, would it be okay if I posted a link to the cover???
I'm hoping there's a Region 2 release.
Ha, ha, I know what the art work looks like!!!

COVER ART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since this edition is not being released by New Line Cinema, there will be no cross-promoting for the new film from New Line & Platinum Dunes (mainly free tickets). New Line did re-release the original film theatrically in the 80s, and possibly a VHS release. But never have they released Tobe Hooper's original on DVD. The only TCMs they own the rights to are "Leatherface: TCM3", the 2003 remake, and the upcoming prequel to the remake. Honestly, the prequel doesn't seem all that different from the remake, but it looks to be a good enough horror flick to check out for me.

That's a common misconception; for the original film it is indeed 'Chain Saw', but each sequential film uses the compound 'Chainsaw'.
Love how some folks are so quick to point out the mistakes of others.

Pretty sure those are the same edition, just one had limited edition packaging.
Anyway, each of Pioneer's previous releases have been okay at best, but the transfer on each was somewhat lacking--even for a film this gritty and shot on 16mm--since they crammed all of the features of those previous discs AND the movie on a single-layer, DVD-5 disc.
If some of Dark Sky Film's recent releases, such as Anthony Hopkins in Magic, are any indication then this should be a package that finally does the film justice.

I don`t have this yet, so I`ll definately pick up this release when It arrives. To me, this film is the scariest and all around best horror film I`ve ever seen. The Michael Bay produced remake was utter trash.
YESSS!!!!!! I nought the one disc special edition when it first came out, but I will still buy this this is gonna kik AZZ CANT WAIT FOR ART WORK!!!!!

ive never seen this but I love the remake and I'm definatly gonna c the prequel to the remake!
A good HD transfer would allow those of us who love the film to actually be as real as the original the documentary like effects will be there in all of their shining glory in a good HD transfer... Holefully HD-DVD!!
Dave, agree with you on the quality thing. TCM s'pose to look gritty.
But don't count on a ticket to the prequel, aside from theatrically re-releasing it back in the 80's, I don't think New Line has much to do with the original. They didn't jump on the TCM wagon until part three.

Nice, but why not buy the HD version. Seen a comparison between the DVD and HD transfer and it's _alot better_
I'm sure that one will have a free ticket for the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning"----
It better not do! No link is wanted.
